chapter VII - the children

▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃▃

Dhirubhai Ambani International School is one of Mumbai's most prestigious educational institutions, known for its world-class facilities and high academic standards.

For many parents, getting their child admitted here is more than just an educational decision—it's a matter of pride, a reflection of status, and a symbol of success.

It's no wonder that this school has become the top choice for Mumbai's elite—Bollywood stars, business tycoons, and sports icons—all wanting the very best for their children.

The school's hallways have seen the likes of Janhvi Kapoor, Ananya Panday, and Sara Tendulkar.

It's where budding talents like Arjun Tendulkar honed their skills, and where Radhika Sharma, the sister of cricketer Rohit Sharma, once walked with books in hand and dreams in her eyes.

Radhika smiles to herself as she remembers those moments. Life has indeed come full circle. Standing at the gates of Dhirubhai Ambani International School, she feels a wave of nostalgia wash over her.

The hustle and bustle of students rushing to classes, the faint sound of laughter echoing in the corridors—it all feels like yesterday.

She looks around, imagining the younger versions of herself, Aditi, and Sara. It's hard to believe how much has changed and yet, in some ways, how little.

Back then, their fights were over the silliest things—who would sit next to Radhika in class, or which movie they'd watch over the weekend. But beneath those petty arguments was a bond that no disagreement could break.

Even now, Aditi and Sara's relationship hasn't changed much. They still argue over the smallest things, whether it's about a new design for Sara's latest collection or who's running late to a photoshoot.

But despite the bickering, they're inseparable. They've grown together, supported each other, and somehow managed to blend their dreams into a shared reality.

Aditi might roll her eyes when Sara gets too bossy, but at the end of the day, they both know they wouldn't be where they are without each other.

Radhika feels a sense of pride in all that they've accomplished. Aditi is gracing magazine covers and billboards, and Sara's boutique is becoming a go-to for Mumbai's fashion-forward crowd.

And as for Radhika, she's on the path to achieving her own dream of becoming a doctor—a dream that was born in these very hallways, in the company of her best friends.

As she stands there, lost in thought, a loud shout of "BUNNY!" brings her back to the present. Shifting her gaze, Radhika spots a familiar figure sprinting towards her with wide smiles and open arms.

In the middle of the pack is her niece, Samaira, herface lit up with a bright and beautiful smile. Oh she has grown so much since Radhika last saw her, but that same spark of energy remains.

Rohit bhai was to blame for the reason Samaira calls her 'Bunny' ever since he was a toddler, and no matter how much she protested back then, the name has stuck.

Rohit bhai has called her 'Khargosh' ever since Radhika was born. That's how "Bunny" came into existence—a name she pretended to hate but secretly loved.

As Samaira races into her arms, Radhika scoops her up, twirling her around as the little girl's giggles fill the air.

It feels like the school day never really ended—only now, it's her niece walking these halls, creating her own memories, just like she did.

"Kaise ho, Bunny?" [How are you, Bunny?] Samaira says, placing a kiss on Radhika's cheek, her tiny hands clinging tightly around her neck.

Radhika smiles and places her forehead against Samaira's, giving the girl her warmest, most reassuring smile. Samaira, of course, understands it perfectly.

"Thank Bappa, aap aa gaye mujhe iss jail se chudane." [Thank Bappa, you're here to rescue me from this jail] Samaira says with a pout, resting her head against Radhika's shoulder.

"Sammy, apne school ko jail kaun bolta hai?" [Sammy, who calls their school a jail?] Rohit questioned, his voice carrying that mix of mock sternness and amusement that only a father can manage.

He walked over with Virat and Hardik bhai on his sides, eyebrows raised, though a smile was already tugging at the corners of his lips.

Samaira pulled back slightly, still in Radhika's arms, and pouted dramatically. "Jail hi toh hai, Dada! Teacher har waqt homework dete rehte hai, aur recess itna chhota hota hai!" [It's totally a jail, Dada! The teachers keep giving homework all the time, and recess is so short!]

Samaira stretched out her arms to emphasize just how tiny her recess seemed. "Aur Bunny, imagine kar lo, Math ke test ka toh naam sunte hi mujhe chakkar aane lagte hai!" [And Bunny, just imagine, as soon as I hear about a Math test, I start feeling dizzy!]

Radhika's laughter made her shoulders shake as she held Samaira closer. The girl's dramatic flair was clearly inherited from her father; Rohit bhai had always had a way with words, even as a kid. Radhika could see him biting back a laugh, trying to maintain his fatherly authority.

"I am telling you, Dada, Bunny, jab main Prime Minister ban gayi na toh pehla kaam hoga Math ko ban karne ka!" [I am telling you, Dada, Bunny, when I become the Prime Minister, the first thing I'll do is ban Math!] Samaira declared, her tiny face scrunched up in determination as she waved her hands around. "Koi bhi bacha Math nahi padhega, aur sab ko double recess milega!" [No kid will have to study Math, and everyone will get double recess!]

"Oh fo, meri Prime Minister, apki party ko main vote doon gi," [Oh wow, my Prime Minister, I'll vote for your party] Aditi chimed in, emerging from behind Virat and Hardik bhai with a grin on her face. She playfully swatted at Rohit as she joined the group, clearly enjoying the little drama that was unfolding.

"Bunny ko main President banaoongi, aur Adi bua ko Minister of Communications banaa doongi!" [I'll make Bunny the President, and Adi bua the Minister of Communications!] Samaira announced with all the seriousness of a six-year-old making major political appointments.

Aditi pouted and tilted her head sideways, her voice filled with mock disappointment. "Sammy, koi Ministry of Fashion nahi hai kya? Tumhari Adi bua ko toh bas wahan ka head banna hai!" [Sammy, isn't there a Ministry of Fashion? Your Adi bua only wants to head that!]

"Adi bua, Fashion Ministry nahi hoti. Aapko itna bhi nahi pata," [Adi bua, there isn't a Fashion Ministry. You don't even know that] Vamika chimed in, her voice carrying that unmistakable tone of a child who's just discovered they know something an adult doesn't.

Vamika had popped up beside Aditi, her hands on her hips, looking every bit the little know-it-all that she was.

Then little Vami turned to Samaira and glared at her best friend with all the seriousness her tiny face could muster. "Samu, agar Bunny President hai, toh main kya hoon? Main bhi kuch banna chahti hoon!" [Samu, if Bunny is the President, then what am I? I want to be something too!] Her hands were on her hips, eyes narrowed, clearly not willing to be left out of this grand game of make-believe.

Samaira, caught off guard by Vamika's demand, blinked a few times, looking like she was thinking really hard.

She scrunched up her little brows, trying to find something that would match the seriousness of the request. "Theek hai, tu Vice-President ban jana. Hum dono milke sabse important cheezein handle karenge. Deal?" [Fine, you can be the Vice-President. We'll handle all the important stuff together. Deal?]

Vamika nodded slowly, but it was clear she wasn't done with her list of demands. "Deal, par mujhe Bunny ke office mein ek seat chahiye. Wahan ek chhota fridge bhi hona chahiye jisme sirf ice cream rahegi. Aur saath mein Chole Bhature bhi, warna main resign kar dungi." [Deal, but I want a seat in Bunny's office. There has to be a small fridge with only ice cream in it. And Chole Bhature too, or else I'll resign.]

At the mention of Chole Bhature, Rohit turned to Virat with a helpless look, his eyes practically saying, "Yeh sab teri training ka nateeja hai." [This is all because of your influence] But Virat, clearly not wanting to take any responsibility, just looked away, whistling innocently like he was admiring the school building for the first time.

Suddenly, there was a loud call. "BUNNY!!!"

Radhika smiled, and without turning around, she knew exactly who was calling her. Hardik, Virat, Rohit, and Aditi all instinctively covered their ears at the familiar sound of that booming voice.

Turning around, Radhika saw Agastya, Hardik's son, charging towards her like a mini hurricane, his school bag swinging wildly and his shoelaces untied, as usual.

"Aree Agastya!" [Hey Agastya!] Hardik called out, trying to act like a responsible dad but clearly amused. "Sambhal ke, bakuda! Dekh laces bhi khule hai!" [Be careful, baby! Your laces are untied!]

Agastya skidded to a stop right in front of Radhika, panting but beaming from ear to ear. He didn't care about the commotion he'd just caused or the disapproving looks from some teachers nearby. To him, Bunny was the best part of his day.

"Bunny, you are back! Maine itna miss kiya apko," [Bunny, you are back! I missed you so much] Agastya extends his arms wide open, almost tackling Radhika as he hugged her tight.

She laughed silently, ruffling his hair with a fond smile. Agastya was all energy, and every time he saw her, it was like he'd just found his favorite toy again.

Radhika quickly pointed at his untied shoelaces, shaking her head playfully, as if scolding him without words. Agastya grinned sheepishly and plopped down on the floor right there, trying to tie them up, making a mess of it as usual.

Virat shakes his head, and kneels in front of Agastya, placing his shoe on his thigh and tying the little boy's shoelaces with the speed and precision of a pit crew mechanic. "Tere papa ne sikhaya nahi abhi tak?" [Didn't your dad teach you yet?] Virat teased, glancing up at Hardik with a smirk.

Hardik shrugged, grinning. "Arre, bhai, maine kitni baar sikhaane ki koshish ki hai, lekin yeh chhota Pandya sikhne keliye taiyaar hi nahi hai." [Bhai, I've tried to teach him so many times, but this little Pandya is just not ready to learn.]

Agastya's stomping was so loud and exaggerated that even the passing students and a few teachers couldn't help but glance over, trying to stifle their smiles. The little boy's tantrum was short-lived, though, as his eyes met Radhika's, and just like that, his bravado melted away.

In that instant, Agastya's confidence seemed to wane, and his earlier display of frustration turned into bashfulness.

He looked up at Radhika with those big, expressive eyes, the same ones that had inherited all of Hardik's mischievous charm, and suddenly found himself shyly shifting from one foot to the other. His earlier bravado was now replaced by a sweet, innocent grin that only a child could pull off.

Radhika raised an eyebrow, and places Samaira on the ground, beside Vamika. She then kneels to his level, her eyes filled with curiosity, silently asking him what he was up to.

Agastya, now fully aware that he was the center of attention, shuffled closer to her, his hands fidgeting with the hem of his school shirt.

He was clearly trying to muster up the courage to say something, but whatever it was, it wasn't coming out as easily as his stomping had.

"Bunny," he finally said in a voice so soft that it barely carried over the laughter of the group. The little boy's sudden shyness only endeared him more to Radhika, who was now fully invested in whatever grand statement he was about to make.

"Bunny main apko kuch dena chahta hoon." [Bunny, I want to give you something.] Agastya hesitated, his small voice almost getting lost in the lively chatter around them.

He turned around, his tiny fingers struggling with the zipper of his overstuffed school bag. The group watched with curiosity as they waited to see what he was up to.

Agastya's little hands wrestled with the zipper of his bag, clearly determined to retrieve whatever treasure he had hidden inside.

The group watched in amusement as he tugged and pulled, his tongue sticking out in concentration—a classic Pandya move, as Hardik would say. Finally, with a grunt, Agastya managed to open the bag, his eyes lighting up as he reached inside.

He pulled out a small, slightly crumpled piece of paper and a half-melted chocolate bar, the one that was Radhika's favourite. He held them out towards Radhika, his face shining with the pride of a child who was offering something truly precious.

"Yeh lo, Bunny! Aap ke liye!" [Here, Bunny! For you!] Agastya exclaimed, thrusting the chocolate and paper towards her. "Main apne recess ka chocolate bachaya tha aapke liye! Aur yeh drawing bhi banayi hai." [I saved my recess chocolate for you! And I made this drawing too.]

There's something so pure and heartwarming about this moment that Radhika feels a lump in her throat. The way Agastya looks up at her with those innocent eyes as if Radhika is the most important person in the world.

How could she note feel a little emotional?  The gesture was so simple, yet it carried so much love and thoughtfulness.

Radhika's eyes softened as she took the slightly squished chocolate bar, treating it as if it were the most valuable gift she had ever received. She smiled down at Agastya, her eyes shimmering with unshed tears, and gently stroked his cheek, a silent way of saying thank you.

Agastya's face lit up even more when he saw her reaction. For a moment, Radhika was transported back to her own childhood, remembering how much it meant to her when someone she loved appreciated her small efforts.

Here was this little boy, trying so hard to make her happy, and in that moment, he succeeded beyond his wildest dreams.

She carefully unfolded the crumpled piece of paper he had given her. The drawing was as endearing as it was simple—a stick-figure version of Radhika with bunny ears, surrounded by other stick figures that must have been the rest of the gang. Underneath, in big, shaky letters, Agastya had written, "I LOVE YOU BUNNY."

Radhika's heart swelled with affection. She could almost hear his little voice in her mind as she read the words. The sheer sincerity of it made her throat tighten, and she blinked a few times, trying to keep those tears at bay.

The others around her noticed the tender moment, their chatter slowly dying down as they watched with fond smiles. Hardik, standing nearby, gave his son a proud nod, while Aditi smiles widely, nudging Virat and Rohit, who were both smiling warmly.

Radhika looked back at Agastya, her eyes filled with so much love and gratitude. She didn't need words to express how much his gesture meant to her.

Instead, she leaned down and hugged him tightly, holding him close as if she never wanted to let go. The little boy wrapped his arms around her neck, hugging her back just as tightly.

"Bunny ko achha laga, hai na?" [Bunny liked it, right?] Agastya whispered in her ear, his voice filled with hope.

Radhika pulled back slightly and nodded, giving him a big, reassuring smile. She placed a gentle kiss on his forehead, her silent way of telling him that it wasn't just "achha"—it was perfect.

"MUJHE BHI KISS CHAHIYE!" [I WANT A KISS TOO!] It was Vamika, her little arms crossed, lips pursed in a mock pout, standing with one foot slightly forward as if she were ready to demand her share of attention.

The group erupted in laughter at her sudden outburst. The serious tone of Vamika's voice, combined with her tiny, determined stance, made her look like she was ready to march over and claim her kiss by any means necessary.

Radhika grinned widely, her earlier emotions lightening into pure joy. She motioned for Vamika to come closer, opening her arms wide.

Vamika, never one to waste an opportunity, dashed forward with the speed of a sprinter, almost knocking into Agastya in her eagerness.

Radhika pulls Vami close,  leaning down to plant a gentle kiss on Vamika's forehead. Vamika closed her eyes, savoring the moment. Pulling away, she gives a smirk to Samaira, who is fuming at not having received a kiss.

Samaira's eyes narrowed, her little face scrunching up in mock outrage as she watched Vamika revel in her victory. Clearly, she wasn't going to let this slide without making her own point.

"Bunny!" Samaira exclaimed, her voice a mixture of indignation and determination. She stomped her foot for dramatic effect, crossing her arms in front of her chest. "Mujhe bhi kiss chahiye! Abhi!" [I want a kiss too! Right now!]

Samaira rushed forward with the speed of a child on a mission, practically launching herself into Radhika's waiting arms.

Radhika caught her with a grin, lifting her up effortlessly and twirling her around, eliciting a burst of delighted giggles from Samaira.

The little girl clung tightly to Radhika, her earlier mock outrage forgotten as she reveled in the affection she was now receiving.

Radhika planted a soft kiss on Samaira's cheek, holding her close as she gave the girl a reassuring squeeze. Samaira, now fully content, beamed with triumph, flashing a smug smile at Vamika as if to say, "See? I got mine too!"

Vamika rolled her eyes playfully, though she couldn't hide her own smile. The rivalry between the two girls was all in good fun, a way for them to express their closeness and the affection they had for Radhika.

As Samaira settled into Radhika's embrace, she turned to Vamika and stuck her tongue out, her eyes twinkling with mischief. "Dekha! Bunny ki kiss meri hi hoti hai!" [See? Bunny's kiss is always mine!]

Vamika, never one to back down, crossed her arms and gave a dramatic huff, but the twinkle in her eyes betrayed her. "Haan haan, abhi toh mil gayi, par next time, main pehli hogi!" [Yeah, yeah, you got it now, but next time, I'll be first!]

Before Vamika could finish her sentence, Agastya jumped in, determined not to be left out. "No. Next kiss meri hogi!" [No. Next kiss is mine!] he declared, his voice firm with the conviction of a boy who wasn't about to let his cousins have all the fun.

Radhika couldn't help but laugh silently at the little competition unfolding in front of her. She put Samaira down, who promptly stuck her tongue out at Agastya before turning her attention to Vamika, her eyes glinting with playful defiance.

Vamika, in typical fashion, wasn't one to back down. "Dekhte hai," [We'll see] she said with a confident nod, her hands on her hips as she squared off with Agastya. "Main hi jeetungi!" [I'll win!]

Agastya, never one to resist a challenge, puffed out his chest and pointed to himself with a grin. "Mujhe koi nahi rok sakta. Bunny meri hai!" [No one can stop me. Bunny is mine!]

The adults, watching the playful exchange, chuckled at the girls' antics. It was clear that the two of them, despite their little competitions, were inseparable—much like Aditi, and Sara had been at their age.

Rohit shook his head, his eyes full of affection for the kids. "Bunny ke liye toh yeh log election ladne ko ready hai," [These kids are ready to contest elections for Bunny] he joked, nudging Hardik, who chuckled in agreement.

"Yeh toh kuch nahi," [This is nothing,] Hardik said, grinning. "Agastya toh ghar mein bhi Bunny ki baatein karta rehta hai. 'Bunny ke liye yeh karna hai, Bunny ko wo dena hai.' Pure din Bunny Bunny! Aur ab yeh rivalry bhi shuru ho gayi." [Agastya talks about Bunny all the time at home. 'I have to do this for Bunny, I have to give that to Bunny.' All day Bunny Bunny! And now this rivalry has also started.]

"Tum sab chodo. Bunny meri hai. She is my best friend." [Forget all of you. Bunny is mine. She is my best friend]

Aditi's declaration hung in the air for a moment, catching everyone off guard. The kids looked up at her with wide eyes, processing the sudden challenge from their usually cool and composed Aditi bua.

Agastya was the first to recover, his competitive spirit flaring up. "Nahi, Bunny meri best friend hai!" [No, Bunny is my best friend!] he insisted, puffing up his tiny chest in defiance. He looked like he was ready to argue his case in front of the Supreme Court if needed.

Vamika, not to be outdone, chimed in with her own confident nod. "Haan! Bunny sabse pehle meri best friend bani thi!" [Yeah! Bunny was my best friend first!]

Samaira, determined to defend her claim, crossed her arms and gave Aditi a serious look. "Adi bua, aapko galatfehmi ho gayi hai. Bunny meri bua and best friend hai, aur yeh baat fix hai!" [Adi bua, you're mistaken. Bunny is my aunt and best friend, and that's final!]

"Aacha, toh yeh batao, ki tum sab kahan te jab Ridhu aur main chote the?" [Oh yeah? Then tell me, where were you when Ridhu and I were little?] Aditi asked, raising an eyebrow as she playfully challenged the kids. She folded her arms, looking down at them with a faux serious expression that immediately had the kids scrambling to come up with a response.

The kids stared at Aditi, clearly stumped by her question. Their little faces scrunched up in concentration as they tried to figure out how to answer her.

Aditi couldn't help but smirk as she watched them struggle, enjoying the rare moment of having the upper hand. "Samaira, Agastya, Vamika, tum log tab kaha the jab Bunny aur main saath-saath bade ho rahe the?" [Samaira, Agastya, Vamika, where were you when Bunny and I were growing up together?] she teased, knowing full well that the kids wouldn't have a good answer.

Samaira, always the first to speak up, opened her mouth to respond, but then quickly closed it, realizing she had no idea what to say.

Agastya, meanwhile, was scratching his head, clearly trying to come up with something, anything, that would let him win this argument.

Vamika, not one to give up easily, was deep in thought, her little brows furrowed in concentration.

Radhika shook her head with a grin, gently swatting Aditi on the arm. Aditi winced dramatically, rubbing the spot as if she'd been gravely injured. "Arre, Ridhu, bas mazak kar rahi thi!"[Hey, Ridhu, I was just kidding!] she protested, though the playful glint in her eyes said otherwise.

The kids, seeing their chance, quickly jumped on the opportunity.

"Dekha, Bunny! Jab aap yahan nahi the, tab Adi bua hume aise hi tang karte thi!" [See, Bunny! When you weren't here, Adi bua used to tease us like this!] Samaira complained, her little face a picture of exaggerated injustice.

Agastya nodded earnestly. "Adi bua toh hamesha humare saath aise hi karti hai. Ek din unho ne bola ki woh mujhe Lego set laakar dengi, aur mujhse push-ups karwae." [Adi bua always does this with us. One day she said she would get me a Lego set, and made me do push-ups.] Agastya puffed up his chest as if the memory still haunted him.

"Haan, aur mujhe apne boring parties mein lekar jati thi," [Yeah, and she took me to her boring parties] Vamika chimed in, her little face scrunched up in annoyance. "Wahan sab log bas baith ke baatein karte rehte hain. Koi dance nahi, koi games nahi! Kitna bore hota hai!" [Everyone just sits and talks. No dancing, no games! It's so boring!]

Aditi listened to all of this with her mouth hanging open, completely taken aback by the kids' exaggerated complaints. "Arre wah! Matlab ab main villain ban gayi hoon tum logon ki life mein!" [Wow! So now I'm the villain in your lives!] she exclaimed, throwing her hands up in mock defeat.

Rohit, Virat, and Hardik were laughing silently, clearly enjoying the way the kids were ganging up on Aditi. Radhika, watching the scene unfold, tried her best to suppress her laughter. But she knew it was time to step in before Aditi's sulking turned into a full-blown drama.

She reached over and gently ruffled Samaira's hair, shaking her head with a playful yet firm expression. Samaira, who had been in the middle of a dramatic complaint, paused, her eyes widening with curiosity. What was Bunny up to now?

Radhika mimed zipping her lips shut, silently signaling Samaira to keep quiet. The little girl, understanding Bunny's unspoken request, quickly imitated the motion, her lips pressed together in a tight line. She knew when Bunny got that look, it was time to listen.

Radhika then tugged on her earlobes. She pointed towards Aditi, who was pretending to be more upset than she actually was.

The kids quickly caught on, their eyes lighting up with a understanding. They all nodded enthusiastically, eager to carry out Radhika's silent instructions.

Samaira, being the little leader she was, took the first step. She walked over to Aditi, her small hands reaching up to tug her earlobes dramatically. "Sorry, Adi bua," she said, her voice filled with exaggerated sweetness.

Agastya and Vamika followed suit, each one pulling their earlobes and offering their apologies with equally over-the-top earnestness. "Sorry, Adi bua!" they chimed in unison, their voices laced with a hint of mischief.

Aditi, who had been doing a fine job of acting like the world was against her, couldn't keep up the charade any longer.

The sight of the three little ones earnestly tugging at their earlobes, trying so hard to apologize, melted her heart.

She bit back a smile, but it was no use. A giggle escaped her, and before she knew it, she was laughing right along with them.

Aditi finally caved, pulling the kids into a tight hug. "Arre, bas bas! Tum sab toh mere jaan ho!" [Okay, okay! You all are my life!] she said, her voice full of affection. "Main mazak kar rahi thi! Tum logon se kaise naraaz ho sakti hoon?" [I was just kidding! How could I ever be mad at you guys?]

The kids grinned widely, relieved and happy to see Aditi smiling again. Any earlier worries they had about upsetting her vanished in an instant. They all huddled closer, basking in the warmth of Aditi's embrace, their little hearts now light and carefree.

Rohit, Virat, and Hardik, who had been watching the entire exchange with amused expressions, exchanged knowing glances. It was clear to them that, no matter how much Aditi tried to act tough, she had an undeniable soft spot for the kids.

"Ab tum logon ka Bharat milap ho gaya ho, toh chalein? Aai aur Baba bhi wait kar rahe honge," [Now that your big reunion is done, shall we go? Aai and Baba are waiting too] Virat finally said, gently reminding everyone that the day wasn't over just yet.

The children, still wrapped up in the joy of their moment with Aditi, looked up at him with wide, innocent eyes.

But even they knew it was time to go home. Their earlier energy began to wane, replaced by the familiar comfort of knowing they would soon be in the cozy warmth of their own homes.

Aditi, still holding onto the little ones, glanced at Radhika with a smile that said, "Can you believe these motus?"

Radhika smiled back, her eyes twinkling with shared affection, knowing that this was just another one of those precious moments in their journey together.

As the group slowly began to gather their things and head toward the parking lot, the last rays of the setting sun bathed the school grounds in a warm, golden light.

And as they walked toward their cars, the kids' chatter filling the evening air, Radhika couldn't help but feel a deep sense of contentment.

Today had been a good day—one filled with the simple joys of being with loved ones. It was a day she would hold close to her heart, just like all the others they had shared, and all the ones they still would.
