CHAPTER TWO:
AN ANGEL
HER HANDS RAN ACROSS THE counter, furrowing her eyebrows as she looked around at Peggy's home. She noticed a family portrait, one of Peggy, a brother, and her parents. Celeste pursed her lips for a moment before glancing towards Peggy who was too busy being focused on making them some warm tea. Celeste walked into the living room, sitting down on the sofa.
"You have a lovely home." Celeste told the woman, crossing her legs as she continued to look around. Peggy glanced towards the angel, a gentle smile on the woman's lips.
"Thank you." She walked over with two cups in her hands, handing one to Celeste before sitting down on the opposite side of the couch. She watched as Celeste took a sip of the tea before pulling the cup away from her mouth and tasting the liquid. She cocked her head slightly, her eyebrows furrowing as she tried to decipher whether or not she liked it. Peggy smiled in amusement at this. "Have you never had tea before, Celeste?"
"I've never known what grass felt like before today." Celeste answered, shrugging her shoulders. Peggy frowned at this.
"What do you mean?"
"I'm not from here." Celeste answered nonchalantly.
"Well then, where are you from?"
"From up above." Celeste told the woman.
"From. . . up above?" Peggy questioned. Celeste nodded her head before pausing, her eyes widened.
"You weren't supposed to know that." Celeste told the woman.
"What exactly is it that I'm not supposed to know?" Peggy asked, cocking an eyebrow at the woman. Celeste opened her mouth before closing it again. "Celeste, you can trust me. I work with the army, part of my job is to keep secrets. It's not like I really have anyone to tell."
Celeste looked at Peggy for a moment, furrowing her eyebrows as she looked at the woman. She was trying to decide whether or not she could trust Peggy and what it was that she said. She knew the humans sometimes turned out to be traitors, but as she looked at Peggy, that's not what she saw. She saw an honest woman that had no reason in her life to lie. "Not a single word?"
"Not a single word." Peggy promised, nodding her head.
"I guess it doesn't matter either way." Celeste smiled, shrugging. "You won't believe what I say anyways."
"That's for me to decide." Peggy told the blonde, taking a sip of her tea.
"Fine." She softly sighed. "I'm an angel."
"An angel?" Peggy asked with raised eyebrows. "That one's new."
"It's the reason why I'm searching for James Barnes." Celeste admitted. "I'm his guardian angel. I'm supposed to protect him. But how do I protect someone when I have no clue where they are." A frown was on the girl's face and Peggy looked at the angel for a moment before placing her cup on the table.
"I'll help you find him." Peggy spoke.
Celeste looked at Peggy with slight surprise. She raise her eyebrows, pursing her lips as she looked at the brunette. She cocked her head slightly. "Really?" Peggy nodded her head. "Why would you do that? You don't even know who I am? I'm a stranger to you."
"As you are everyone else that resides on this planet." Peggy pointed out to her. "Maybe it's weird of me to say this, but you have this kind of aura that surrounds you. Something that only screams that you're trustworthy and wouldn't do anything to potentially lie to me or hurt me. So, I trust you. And believe you. On some level. The being an angel part, I'd have to see for myself."
"Oh." Celeste mumbled. She shrugged her shoulders. "I could show you?"
"Show me? How?" Peggy frowned. Celeste stood up and Peggy followed her with her eyes.
"Do you happen to have any sunglasses?" Celeste questioned. Peggy slowly nodded her head before getting up and walking out of the room for a moment before coming back with the sunglasses in her hand. "Alright. Put them on." Peggy did as the angel asked of her. When they were on the human's face, Celeste let out a deep breath. "Don't freak out, alright? But you're going to see a really bright light. And a shadow. It's just my wings." Peggy, deciding against saying anything, just nodded. With a deep breath, Celeste straightened her shoulders. Peggy watched the blinding light surround the angels before her wings could be seen in the shadow behind her. They were gorgeous, and Peggy took a moment to gawk at them before Celeste forced her wings and the light to fade away. Slowly, Peggy took off the sunglasses.
"Wow." The woman breathed.
"Yeah. . ." Celeste nodded. "I haven't even been on your earth a full day and I've already broken the first rule."
"What rule?" Peggy frowned.
"To not allow the humans to know what I truly am." Celeste answered. She looked at Peggy for a moment before a gentle smile fell on her face. "Peggy, I don't think it was an accident that we met. In fact, I think that was his plan after all. You're part of a bigger picture, and now I'm going to be here to fill in that picture."
"I don't understand. . ."
"Oh, that, I definitely cannot tell you. Or it won't happen." Celeste shrugged her shoulders. "That's just how it works."
"Well, tell me all about it in the morning." Peggy told the girl. "It's getting late. We better sleep. . . if angels do that sort of thing. We'll talk in the morning, and then we'll find this James Barnes guy that you must find."
"Alright." Celeste nodded her head. "Goodnight, Peggy."
"Goodnight, Celeste." With that, Peggy walked out of the room, leaving Celeste to sit there in the living room, closing her eyes, and falling asleep on the woman's couch.
