Chapter Eight // Where Are You?
I Found - Amber Run
Ponyboy's Point of View:
Johnny has been gone for hours and I have no idea where he could have gone. Darry said he went to go to the park to do some sketching but he never came home and he left early this morning.
The sun was setting and the colors painted actor's the sky. I have no time to watch it today because I have to find Johnny who must be in awful trouble to not have come home...
Grabbing my jacket, I quickly throw it on and grab a flashlight, walking out the door. My mind was racing with many thoughts and I was scared.
Never once have I admitted out loud that I was scared of something or someone. Well now, I'm frightened over losing the only true friend I've made in New York City.
Turning around the corner, my eyes dart around the empty streets, searching for the dark haired boy. In this large city, where could my best friend be?
Someone grabs my wrist and I cry out in fright, turning quickly to see who it was. There stood Soda, panting and holding my wrist.
"Ponyboy what are you doing out here." Soda asks. "It's getting dark and you know how Darry feels about us being out at dark."
"Johnny's missing Soda, and I'm not going to sit back and let him stay that way," I yell. "He's my best friend and I'm not leaving him alone..."
Soda's eyes soften and he lets go of my wrist, nodding his head slightly. He Take a deep breath and exhales.
"Okay... Where do you think he could be," Soda asks. "Where's his favorite place?"
"Darry said he was supposed to be at the park this morning and Johnny didn't come home. That's not like him," I say.
"I know Pone... Johnny's a good kid and I know that's not like him," Soda says. "But we'll find him, we have to... I don't know what I could do if we didn't."
I look at Soda, examining his features and frown slightly. Biting my lip, I take a shaky breath before speaking.
"Y-you... You like Johnny," I murmur. "You like Johnny..."
"Pony... I-i...," he stammers. "I-i... I-I do like Johnny but I can't help it..."
My chest welled up with anger for some unknown reason I didn't understand. I glare at him and try not to strangle my older brother.
"Get away from me," I murmur. "Just go, I can look for him by myself..."
"Pony, what's wrong," Soda asks. "I didn't do anything."
"You can't like Johnny," I growl. "You can't like him!"
"Why can't I," he asks. "I'm not doing anything wrong."
"You can't like Johnny because I like him," I blurt. "I like him..."
My chest felt tight from the sudden confession and Soda looks at me funny. He balls up his fist and I take a step back.
"I'm going to look for Johnny down town," Soda says through clenched teeth. "You can't stop me..."
Soda turns on his heel and sprints off in the opposite direction of me, his footsteps slowly growing quiet. My body turns as well, walking away.
I quicken my pace, worriedly jogging around the never sleeping city. Suddenly, I trip over something and fall forward, smacking my knees and palms against the pavement.
Turning, there sits the jacket I have Johnny, torn at the sleeves and splattered with dirt. My eyes widen and I grab the jacket, holding it tight in my hands.
"Johnny," I call out. "Johnny where are you!?"
Tears well up in my eyes and I bite my lip roughly, shakily standing. I hold the jacket with one hand and my flashlight with the other, shakily breathing.
"I'm coming Johnny," I murmur quietly. "I'm going to find you if it's the last thing I do..."
Running away, I look left and right into alleys and building Windows of the open cafes and restaurants. My Johnny was gone and now I don't know how long it would take me to find him again.
Johnny, I will find you, don't worry... I'll be there soon...
