one: red
It was probably 5 am when the deafening alarm coming from someone's phone almost made me topple off of the bed. I clicked my tongue in annoyance, watching my phone vibrate its way toward the edge.
"Hey, you need to wake up or you'll miss class." I tap my brother's shoulder as he groans in return, "Three tardies equal a demerit. You don't want one coming from Mr. Song, do you?"
Seokmin opens his eyes and stares at me with the most apathetic gaze he can muster, "Then let him give me one. I've slept through seven of his classes anyway."
He shifts his body away and snuggles more comfortably under the thickest blanket you can buy at the department store. I rolled my eyes and could only look forward to getting ready to start the day without my twin.
I was halfway eating my sandwich when a hand snatched the other sandwich from my plate. "That's mine you doofus!" I scowled at the shirtless man, sticking his tongue out as he took a huge bite of the food I was supposed to bring to school. "And dry your hair out, water's dripping everywhere."
"You got it, princess—" "Don't call me that!" Before I could slap his arm he disappeared into the nearest corner.
Seokmin can be a huge pain in the ass but I can't deny he's a lovable one. He's been like that since he was a child, pulling pranks at people he's close with and even those who he just met. We're twins but we barely get along, and we came to expect to disagree with each other's ideas a lot.
He's a clown but he knows when to turn his childish antics off, and he can do it like a light switch.
"Are you ready to go?"
"What? To jump on a cliff?" I snickered.
Seokmin rolls his eyes, "No, to run someone over." He replies always with the driest sarcasm.
"Ready as I will ever be."
...
"Sorry, my brother took me too long. How's the banner looking?"
I dropped my bag somewhere and bent down, touching the dried strokes on the large parchment of paper. "It's looking good, though we're running out of red paint," Jiwon muttered, busy cutting paper hearts in the corner.
"Didn't you ask Dino to get some yesterday?" I asked and heard Jiwon breathe out deeply, "He can't. Mr. Kim caught him spray painting his name at the back of the gym again and he got suspended."
"Damn, Chan just can't catch a break." I laughed and covered my face to hide the tears in the corner of my eyes, "Well, don't worry. The fence is always short enough for me to climb anyway in these kinds of emergencies!"
Jiwon perked up her eyebrow, looking skeptically over my obvious bright idea. "Oh, of course! It's always great to climb the fence and to trip over a small stick and scream so loud for the janitor to find you! Yeah, when did anything go wrong?"
"You're such a killjoy Jiwon! Besides, you've seen me do it a bunch of times." I puffed my chest out proudly, "Yeah, and ten out of those hundreds of attempts were successful." She retorted.
"Pssh, you're just exaggerating!" I said and she responded so bluntly, "I've counted."
Even with how concerned she was, I was still adamant about doing some mischief just for a medium-sized bottle of poster paint. I always find a way to bend the rules just to see my limits, and I'll take every opportunity I can get.
Jiwon was going to say more when the bell's ring echoed through the corridors. It was just the perfect distraction that I needed to pick my bag up from the floor and send the girl a cheeky salute.
...
"Okay, we've done this before and we can do it again. Be mindful and shut your mouth, normal stuff." My lips formed a wavering smile and my palms met the hard wall.
I struggled to jump and push myself up but after some attempts, I was successful. Thankfully, the width of the wall was wide enough for me to sit on for a while to catch my breath. I peered through the tall bushes of trees and caught a glimpse of the stores outside. When I was about to jump off the other side, the only thing that jumped was the volume of my voice.
"Shit! I almost crushed onto you!" I shrieked, my hand clutching onto my chest.
"Mhm, that seems to be almost the case." The boy utters so nonchalantly, pushing his spectacles as its lens shimmers from the sunlight. "I advise you to return now before someone catches you sitting over there."
I tilt my head sideways in curiosity, staring at the man I'm sure I've never seen before anywhere on the campus. "How about you? You look like you were waiting for someone. Why are you here anyway?" I ask to stall for a bit and catch him off-guard once I bolt.
The boy chuckles, uncrossing his arms and slipping his hands inside each of his pockets. "I do, but it's not important now. How 'bout you, why are you here?"
I pursed my lips in thought, should I trust him?
Well, it doesn't hurt having a new buddy during these mishaps.
"I was going to fetch some paint for a banner that's needed for tomorrow. We're pretty short on members so you can see that we're desperate." What I mean in short is we're literally three people in one club, I wished I could say.
Pursing his lips in interest, he nods and looks at the vague passageway. Everyone knows that a simple right turn leads to the market, well, everybody that left school when they shouldn't.
He looks back at me and grins, the most gentle curve much to the odd feeling brewing in my stomach. "I'll get some for you in the craft store."
"Oh please, you don't need to do that. Besides, I bet you'll buy the wrong thing—"
"Trust me, I'm not that cheap to buy you something that sucks." My lips closed in a thin line while that forsaken smile on his face doesn't falter, "And oh, I almost forgot,"
"What is it now—"
"Get down safely okay? Neither of us wants any scratches on your pretty knees." He smirks and he finally turns away. I stare at him with eyes big as saucers, in disbelief at the amount of confidence— whatever you want to call it— he has.
It gets worse once I arrive upon a big container of red paint sitting on the table. Sticking to the plastic material, a yellow note consisting of delicately-written letters glimmers under the light.
