Sasha LaRusso sat on a bench near the edge of the tournament floor, her fingers absentmindedly running over the engraved gold plate on her trophy. Female Champion of the Sekai Taikai. The words felt surreal beneath her touch, as if saying them out loud would make them vanish. She had worked for this, dreamed of this moment for years. But now that it had happened, now that the cheers had faded and the adrenaline had settled, she was left with a strange, unsettling thought. What now?

The weight of the trophy in her hands was satisfying but also heavier than she expected, almost like it carried the expectations of what was supposed to come next.

"Figured you might need this."

She looked up just in time to see Derek slide onto the bench beside her, setting a tray of food down between them. His signature easygoing smile was in place, but there was a glint of something softer in his eyes-something that always made her chest feel light and tight at the same time.

Sasha let out a breath she didn't realize she was holding. "You're a lifesaver. I should probably eat before I pass out in front of the whole arena."

Derek smirked. "Wouldn't be a great look for the Sekai Taikai Champion to get carried out of here in a stretcher."

She rolled her eyes but took the tray gratefully, peeling back the wrapper on a sandwich. Just as she was about to take a bite, a voice interrupted them.

"Sasha LaRusso?"

Sasha paused mid-motion, turning to see a well-dressed woman in a fitted navy-blue suit standing in front of them. Her hair was sleekly pulled back, her posture confident.

"Uh... yeah?" Sasha answered hesitantly, setting her sandwich down.

The woman smiled, her expression warm but professional. "I'm Lisa Chang. I work with an international scholarship program that focuses on young martial artists. We've been watching the competition closely, and I have to say, we were incredibly impressed with your performance today."

Sasha blinked, glancing at Derek, who raised an eyebrow as if to say this sounds important.

Lisa continued, "We have an opportunity that I believe would be a perfect fit for someone of your skill and dedication. We're inviting a select group of champions to join an international training and mentorship program. The program focuses on spreading karate to underprivileged communities, training with different dojos across the world, and helping young kids compete at this level. You'd be an ambassador for the sport."

Sasha straightened, her pulse quickening. Training across the world? Teaching kids? That was... huge.

Lisa reached into her bag and pulled out a sleek envelope, placing it in Sasha's hands. "If you accept, you'd receive a full scholarship for any university of your choice. But there is one condition."

Sasha swallowed. "What is it?"

Lisa's expression softened. "The program starts immediately. If you accept, you'd need to leave tonight."

Sasha's stomach flipped. "Tonight?"

Lisa nodded. "I know it's sudden, but this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Take some time to think about it, but we'll need an answer before the end of the tournament."

With that, Lisa gave her a polite nod and walked away, disappearing into the crowd of officials and competitors.

Sasha sat frozen, staring down at the envelope in her hands. The weight of it felt just as heavy as the trophy in her lap. This was... everything she had ever wanted. A chance to travel, to push her limits, to give back. To become something more. But leaving tonight? Leaving everyone?

She turned to Derek, wide-eyed. "I-I don't know what to do."

Derek let out a slow breath, rubbing the back of his neck. "That's... a lot."

"Yeah," Sasha breathed, still in shock.

For a moment, they sat in silence, the noise of the tournament a distant hum. Then Derek looked at her, something certain settling into his expression.

"I'll follow you wherever you go."

Sasha's heart stopped. "What?"

Derek shrugged, as if it was the simplest thing in the world. "I finished school early. Perks of being homeschooled. I can go anywhere. So if you're going, I'm going."

Sasha's breath hitched. She searched his face, looking for any sign of hesitation, but there was none. He meant it.

"You're serious?" she whispered.

Derek met her gaze, unwavering. "Yeah."

She exhaled sharply, gripping the envelope a little tighter. Of all the things she had expected to happen today, this wasn't on the list.

"I have to talk to my parents first," she finally said.

Derek grinned. "Of course."

Sasha nodded, still processing everything. Her entire world had just changed in the span of five minutes. But as overwhelming as it was, she knew one thing for sure-whatever came next, she wasn't facing it alone.

The crowd inside the tournament arena roared as Miguel stepped onto the mat, his name being announced over the loudspeakers. The energy was electric, but Sasha LaRusso could barely hear any of it. Her heart pounded as she pulled her parents aside, her fingers tightening around the envelope in her hands.

"Mom, Dad," she said, her voice urgent, "I need to talk to you."

Daniel and Amanda LaRusso exchanged quick, concerned glances before stepping away from the stands with her. Amanda placed a hand on Sasha's shoulder. "Sweetheart, what's wrong?"

Sasha took a breath, steadying herself. "There's this-this opportunity. A scholarship program. They want me to train and teach karate all over the world, helping kids in underprivileged areas compete. It's everything I've ever wanted."

Daniel's expression softened, a flicker of pride appearing in his eyes. "Sasha, that sounds incredible."

"But," Sasha hesitated, her grip on the envelope tightening, "there's a catch. I'd have to leave... tonight."

The moment she said it, the expressions on her parents' faces shifted.

"Tonight?" Amanda repeated, taken aback.

Sasha nodded, her pulse quickening. "I know it's sudden, but this is huge. They're offering a full scholarship for college, and I'd get to travel and train at different dojos across the world. This is what I've been working for-what I love."

Daniel exhaled, rubbing the bridge of his nose. "Sasha, I-this is a big decision. Leaving tonight? That's barely enough time to process anything."

"I don't need time," Sasha insisted, her voice almost pleading. "I know this is what I want. Please."

Before her parents could respond, a familiar voice interrupted.

"What's going on?"

Sasha turned to see Anthony and Sam approaching, both looking between her and their parents with confusion.

Amanda hesitated before saying, "Your sister got offered a scholarship to travel the world for karate. But she'd have to leave tonight."

Anthony's mouth dropped open. "Wait-what? Tonight?"

Sam blinked in shock, her brows furrowing. "Sasha, that's... really sudden."

"I know," Sasha said, exhaling. "But I have to do this."

Silence settled between them, the noise of the tournament fading into the background.

Amanda sighed, reaching out to tuck a stray piece of hair behind Sasha's ear. "Sweetheart, are you absolutely sure about this?"

Sasha swallowed, her chest tightening. "Yes."

Daniel still looked conflicted, his protective instincts warring with the understanding that this was Sasha's dream. But after a long moment, he sighed, nodding.

"Alright," he said quietly. "If this is what you truly want, then... we won't stand in your way."

Sasha's breath hitched, her eyes stinging with emotion. "Thank you."

Amanda pulled her into a tight hug, whispering, "We're so proud of you."

Anthony, still looking like he was processing everything, scoffed. "Guess I have to find a new person to annoy now."

Sasha huffed a small laugh, ruffling his hair. "Good luck with that."

Sam, however, had tears in her eyes. "I can't believe you're really leaving."

Sasha gave her a sad smile. "I'll visit. And I'll call all the time."

Sam let out a shaky breath before hugging her tightly. "You better."

As Sasha hugged each of them, she felt a mix of excitement and sadness settle in her chest. This was the start of something new-something bigger than she had ever imagined.

And even though leaving was hard, she knew she was ready.

Sasha's hands moved quickly, grabbing clothes, toiletries, and the last few things she'd need for her trip. She shoved them all into the trunk of her car, her movements mechanical but with a sort of quiet finality. The sky above her was darkening, the sun setting on her last night in Los Angeles before she left for the scholarship program. The excitement was overwhelming, but underneath it, there was a weight she couldn't ignore.

Derek stood next to her, bouncing from foot to foot like an eager puppy, his wide grin matching the palpable excitement in the air. "Can't believe this is actually happening! We're really doing this! We're going on an adventure!"

Sasha half-smiled, tying the last strap of her duffel bag. She could feel the knot in her stomach. It was a mix of nerves and nostalgia-she'd never been this far from home, not for this long. "I know. It feels so unreal," she muttered, trying to ignore the lump that had formed in her throat.

She glanced back at the house, the warm lights shining from inside. It looked like a piece of her past now-her childhood, her family, everything she knew. It was hard to believe that in just a few hours, she'd be on her way to a completely new life.

"Everything okay?" Derek asked, noticing the distant look in her eyes as she took a slow breath.

Sasha nodded, but the smile didn't quite reach her eyes. "Yeah, just... thinking."

Her gaze lingered on the house for a moment longer before she whispered softly, almost to herself, "Goodbye."

It was bittersweet. She was leaving behind a life she knew, but she was chasing a dream that had always felt just out of reach.

Derek took a step closer to her, his hand gently brushing her arm. "Hey, it's going to be amazing. We're going to have so much fun, I promise." He nudged her playfully. "And besides, we'll still be in touch, right? It's not like we're never going to see each other again."

Sasha finally turned toward him, the edges of her smile softening. She appreciated Derek's optimism, his unrelenting enthusiasm. "Yeah, we'll keep in touch."

She slipped her hand into his, giving him a small squeeze.

"So, ready to get this show on the road?" Derek said, practically vibrating with excitement, trying to lighten the mood. "The world's waiting for us!"

Sasha laughed, shaking her head as she walked toward the driver's side of the car. "You're impossible," she teased, though the lightness in her voice felt real for the first time in hours.

As she got into the driver's seat and Derek climbed in beside her, Sasha took one last glance at the house. A heavy sigh left her lips, and she muttered, "Goodbye, Los Angeles."

With the engine purring to life, she pulled away from the curb. The car began to roll down the familiar streets, and as she took one last look in the rearview mirror, she realized: this was it. There was no going back now.

The future lay ahead of her, and for the first time, Sasha was ready to meet it head-on.
