आजा, चँदा, बाहों में तुमें ही गुम हो जाऊँ मैं,
तेरे नाम में खो जाऊं

On a warm afternoon filled with sunlight and the sound of chirping birds, a girl stands by the window in her university corridor. Her brown eyes scan the breathtaking view before her, reflecting a sense of pure innocence. Yet, life has dealt her some harsh blows, as evidenced by her swollen eyes, which suggest she may have cried throughout the night.
She wears an oversized Pakistani suit, her long black hair pulled into a messy braid. A small black bindi graces her forehead, complemented by a touch of lip gloss. An ID card hangs around her neck, attached to an inhaler.
Living with asthma, she knows that the condition can improve with time and care, but perhaps she hasn't received the love and attention necessary for healing. Her asthma attacks are frequent, leaving her feeling helpless. Life has always treated her unfairly, and it seems she has never found the strength to truly embrace life.
She gazed at the view, a subtle grip on her inhaler, her smile masking the pain and years of yearning for love that never came. Accused of a fault she didn't commit-perhaps one she was unaware of-she felt the weight of her situation. Beside her stood her best friend, Vanya Singh Shekhawat, the daughter of the Shekhawat family, a comforting presence she recognized well.
"Just wait and see, one day you'll forget you have asthma, and that inhaler will be miles away from you," Vanya said playfully, trying to brighten her mood, but her efforts fell flat.
"One day, a prince will come in and love you so fiercely that you'll forget all your pain," she reassured her.
"LOVE, what's it I never felt it or maybe it's not made for me," Adhira replied with a heart-wrenching smile.
Adhira Sehgal, the youngest of the Sehgal family, felt neglected and overlooked. Her family treated her poorly-not out of malice, but because they resented her very existence. Her mother, Adhya Sehgal, had passed away during childbirth, and her loss left the family shattered. Since that day, Adhira had been blamed and seen as a bad omen. The reality of the situation, however, held the potential to break the family apart even further.
She was always the forgotten princess, she was meant to be a princess.
She was meant to be cherished.
She was meant to be loved.
But a moment came in which she became just unwanted.
She became the unwanted princess.
"By the way, did you know that my dii wedding is in five days? I just found out yesterday," Adhira said, while Vanya clenched her teeth in frustration.
"They don't deserve you, Adhu," Vanya replied, still gritting her teeth. Adhira couldn't do anything about Vanya's dislike for her family.
"Do you know who your sister is marrying?" Vanya asked irritably. Adhira shook her head, exhaling. She was unaware of her sister's wedding and felt overlooked by her family, learning the news from someone outside the family.
"She's marrying my brother," Vanya said, with a hint of annoyance.
"What?" Adhira looked surprised by this information.
"Yeah, after a lot of emotional blackmail, he's finally getting married," Vanya said with a shrug.
"You know, Adhu, I really don't want this marriage. I wish someone could help my brother heal. He's been broken ever since Avantika di passed away; he hasn't been the same," Vanya said, her eyes reflecting the pain for her brother.
"I just want to see him happy again. I can't stand this cold, grumpy version of my brother. I want the brother who used to smile," Vanya said as Adhira listened closely.
"Forget it, nothing is going to change..." Vanya sighed, pulling Adhira along with her.
But little did they know, everything was about to change.
It might either shatter or heal...
Life has been somewhat unkind to me. I never got the chance to know my mother, who passed away during childbirth, and that has made my existence more difficult. My father has never acknowledged me, and my family subjects me to verbal abuse.
She didn't only died that day, she took everything with her.
My mother, Aadhya Seghal, was the soul of our family and deeply cherished by everyone; she was the love of my father's life. His enduring love for her only adds to the pain of her loss, especially since, in many ways, I feel responsible for her death.
This has fueled their resentment toward me, which I find unbearable. The only person who truly understands my feelings is Vanya.
My mother was an exceptional Kathak dancer, and unknowingly, I inherited my passion for dance from her. It became the focal point of my life, though I didn't realize it at first. I dance to escape my pain; it's always been a way for me to cope. I've never danced out of joy; only to forget the hurt of ignorance and vulnerability.
Before she passed away, my mother left me 20 letters, which I still cherish, along with her ghungroo and a shawl-her final memories. She was incredibly beautiful, and it's ironic that I bear a striking resemblance to her. My eyes and nose are just like hers, yet my father has never acknowledged it. How could he, when he never truly looked at me?
He has a deep disdain for me.
If life granted me a wish, it would be to understand why I'm still here.
I suffer from asthma, and while it can heal with love and care over time, I never received that. Vanya, always reminds me to stay on top of my inhalers. Meanwhile, my sister, Trisha Sehgal, is getting married, but no one bothered to inform me- I had to find out from outside the family.
Afterall, I'm just a burden for everyone.
My thoughts came to halt when, vanya dragged me to the classroom. As I entered the classroom, I sat down next to Vanya. The professor arrived soon after and began his lecture while I focused intently on taking notes. Before long, the principal walked in with some board members, and we all welcomed him.
"Good morning, students. As you know, the college feast is tomorrow, and I expect everyone to participate," he announced before leaving.
Murmurs spread among the students, but I wasn't concerned. I had no intention of joining in; especially since Mr. Seghal, my father, who insists on being called that, is a trustee at the university and would definitely be present. I didn't want to encounter him or risk ruining his mood.
I began to pack my things to leave when Vanya stopped me.
"Kidhar chali tu,You're participating tomorrow, and that's final," she said firmly.
"How can I?" I protested.
"Come on, Adhira, you know better," Vani replied, but she didn't want to hear my arguments.
"Yes, Adhira, you are going to dance," one of my classmates chimed in. I glanced around, seeing the hopeful looks in their eyes.
"You all know I have asthma; I can't do it," I tried to convince them, but they quickly offered a solution.
Vani sat me down on the bench and took my hands in hers.
"Listen, Adhu, don't worry. I'll be backstage with your inhaler and everything you need," she said, squeezing my hand reassuringly.
"That's not the issue; my family will be there, and I don't want to dance in front of them," I said, hoping they would understand.
They agreed, but then our class representative suggested something that changed everyone's minds.
"It's just a minor concern, Adhira. You can dance with a veil," she said enthusiastically.
"Yeah, that's not a bad idea. You'll be dancing classical, so a veil would work perfectly," another classmate chimed in.
"Exactly, Adhu, no one will know who's behind the veil," Vani added, a glimmer of hope in her eyes.
How could I dance in front of everyone? But I also didn't want to let them down.
"Okay," I said softly, noticing their eyes light up at my response.
As they listened to me, a sense of cheer spread, and everyone got back to their tasks. But there I was, overwhelmed by my own sadness.
Life has never been easy for me, especially with my family. They resent my very existence, and my presence feels suffocating to them.
To the outside world, I may be the daughter of the famous industrialist family, the Seghals, but deep inside, I feel like a burden.
Dancing used to be my passion, but that spark faded the moment my family discovered it. Dancing became my escape, a way to temporarily mask my pain.
Tomorrow, I'll dance again, hoping to forget my sorrow.
If I had died alongside my mother that day, it might have been a blessing for me. She passed away, leaving me with this heavy, sorrow-filled life.
This is how I exist: merely living, a burden, nothing more than that.
What can a girl hope for when her own father and family look down on her?
This is the life of Adhira Sehgal:
an unwanted daughter,
an undesired presence in this world,
a bad omen who took her mother's life,
and a burden.
She was the unwanted princess of Seghal princess.
