Chapter 11: Shattered Hopes
Hira stood in front of her mirror, brushing her hair back into a neat bun as she prepared for her shift at the airport.
Her mind was a tangled mess of emotions and thoughts, replaying the events of the previous week over and over again.
She'd been avoiding Shubman, ignoring his texts and calls, hoping the distance would help her sort through her feelings.
Her phone buzzed on the dresser, and she sighed, already knowing who it was. Reluctantly, she picked it up and saw another message from Shubman.
Shub💜
We need to talk.
Can you meet me today?
Hira stared at the message, feeling a mix of irritation and guilt. She didn't want to confront the situation, but she also knew she couldn't keep avoiding him.
With a huff, she typed a quick response.
Okay
She shoved her phone into her bag and finished getting ready, her mind racing with what she would say. She had to face him eventually, and maybe it was time to clear the air and move on.
Arriving at the airport, she went through the motions of her job, trying to keep her focus on her tasks. But the thought of meeting him later kept nagging at the back of her mind.
Many hours later, As her shift ended, she made her way to the agreed meeting spot, her heart pounding in her chest.
Shubman was already there, leaning against his car, looking tense and impatient.
When he saw her approaching, he straightened up and took a deep breath, his eyes searching hers for any hint of what she was feeling.
"Hira," he started, his voice soft but insistent. "Why have you been avoiding me?"
She crossed her arms defensively, trying to mask her anxiety with irritation. "I've just been busy," she lied, knowing it sounded weak even to her own ears.
"Busy for a whole week?" he asked, his eyebrows raising skeptically. "We need to talk about what happened. We can't just pretend it didn't."
Hira took a deep breath, bracing herself for the conversation. "I know," she replied, her tone clipped. "Let's just get this over with."
He looked taken aback by her abruptness but nodded. "Alright. First, I want to know why you've been avoiding me. We can't just pretend that night didn't happen."
Her s eyes flickered with pain and regret. She knew she couldn't dance around the truth any longer.
"Because I regret it, Shubman," she said bluntly, her voice cracking slightly. "I regret that night. I think we ruined our friendship."
He looked at her, stunned. "Regret it?" he echoed, his voice low and disbelieving. "I thought... I thought it meant something to you."
"It did," she admitted, her eyes glistening with unshed tears. "But it also brought back memories I wasn't ready to deal with. I felt like I lost control, and now I don't know how to face you."
Shubman stepped closer, his expression softening with understanding.
"Hira, it doesn't have to be like this. We can talk about what happened, about your past, about everything. We don't have to throw away what we have because of one night."
She shook her head, tears spilling over. "You don't understand, Shubman. That night brought back so many painful memories. I can't just ignore them."
"I don't want you to ignore them," he said gently, reaching out to touch her arm. "Hira, you can talk to me about your past. We can work through this together."
But Hira, overwhelmed by her fears and insecurities, cut him off sharply.
"Stop it, Shubman. You don't understand," she snapped, her voice trembling with frustration. "You and I... we're never going to happen."
His eyes widened in shock. "Why would you say that? I thought we had something special."
Hira's eyes burned with unshed tears. "I'm just a pilot. And you're a celebrity cricketer. Our worlds are too different. You deserve someone who fits into your life, not someone who constantly feels excluded."
"That's not true," he protested, stepping closer. "I don't care about those things. I care about you."
She shook her head, stepping back. "Please, Shubman. Just leave me alone," she said, her voice breaking. "This isn't going to work."
Before he could respond, Hira turned on her heel and walked away, her heart heavy with regret.
Shubman stood there, tears welling up in his eyes as he watched her retreating figure.
The distance between them seemed to grow with every step she took, leaving him feeling more alone than ever.
As she walked away, Hira's own tears fell freely. She felt as if she were tearing out a piece of her heart, but she couldn't bear the thought of being the reason for Shubman's pain.
In her mind, ending things now was the only way to protect them both from further hurt.
Few days later,

A few days later, Hira stepped out of the Mumbai airport, expecting the usual bustle of travelers and the traffic and noise.
What she didn't expect was to be instantly surrounded by a throng of reporters and paparazzi, their cameras flashing and microphones thrust in her face.
"Hira! Is it true you're dating Shubman Gill?" one reporter shouted.
"Are you and Shubman in a serious relationship?" another asked.
"Can you tell us about the night you two spent together?" a third prodded.
Her heart raced as she tried to maneuver through the crowd, feeling overwhelmed by the barrage of questions.
She kept her head down, her eyes scanning for an escape route. The questions grew more intrusive, each one hitting her like a wave, threatening to drown her in a sea of speculation and gossip.
"Please, no comments," she managed to say, her voice strained but firm. "I have nothing to say about my personal life."
But the reporters were relentless, following her every step, their questions becoming more aggressive.
She felt a hand brush against her arm, and she pulled away instinctively, her discomfort mounting.
The flashes of the cameras were blinding, each one a harsh reminder of the scrutiny she was under.
Despite her efforts to remain calm, the reporters grew bolder, their questions cutting deeper.
"Do you think your behavior is appropriate for someone in your position?" one of them sneered.
Another chimed in, "How do your parents feel about your relationship with Shubman? Are they disappointed in you?"
That last question struck a nerve. Hira felt a surge of anger and upsetness boiling inside her.
She had managed to keep her emotions in check until now, but questioning her character and dragging her parents into the mix was a step too far.
"How dare you," she said, her voice low but filled with fury. She turned to face the reporter who had asked the question about her parents, her eyes blazing.
"You have no right to talk about my parents. If you want to ask about me, fine, but leave them out of it."
The reporter smirked, seemingly unfazed. "Oh, chid gai kya? Maybe if you behaved more appropriately, people wouldn't have to question your upbringing."
That was the breaking point. Hira's patience snapped. "You know nothing about me or my family," she shot back, her voice raising with each word.
"And for your information, my parents are proud of me. They raised me to stand up to bullies like you. So, why don't you take your baseless assumptions and shove them where the sun doesn't shine?"
The crowd fell silent, shocked by her outburst. Hira's chest heaved as she took a moment to collect herself.
Without another word, she pushed through the group of reporters and made her way to her car.
Once inside, she locked the doors and gripped the steering wheel tightly, trying to calm her racing heart.
As she drove away, the anger slowly dissipated, replaced by a sense of relief. She had stood up for herself and her family, and it felt good. But she knew this wasn't over.
But for now, she needed a moment of peace. A moment to breathe. And as she drove away from the chaos, she resolved to find that peace, no matter what it took.
