•Chapter 8: Liam and the Storybook•

After meeting with Austin and finding out the information he knows, we walk towards the house that looks like Emma's. We thought about going to the loft but we really didn't feel like dealing with all the positive energy after dealing with the news. When we get to the house, I open the door to interrupt what looked like an important conversation between Emma, Killian, and a strangely familiar-looking man.

"Everly. Sam," Killian says as he walks over to us and places an arm around our shoulders before he leads us towards the man who stares at us with confusion in his eyes, "this is Liam, my brother."

"Who are these two?" Liam asks as Sam and I stare at him with wide, shocked eyes.

"My daughter and son," Killian answers, "I adopted Everly a few months after...you know, and I adopted Sam thirty years later after an adventure in Neverland."

"Everly is also my sister," Emma adds as Liam gives her a strange look, "long story."

"Alright," Liam responds, "and the others?"

"These are our friends," I say, "Katherine, Fletcher, Vincent, Harry, and Austin."

"What was going on before we came in?" Sam asks.

"We were about to go to the loft to look for a storybook," Emma tells us.

"I thought Henry had the storybook," Fletcher says.

"He does but we're hoping there's a similar one down here," Killian responds.

"Then let's go," Katherine announces before we turn and make our way to the loft.

When we get to the loft and tell everyone our plan, David makes his way over the closet and pulls out a wooden box before he sets it on the counter.

"In the world above, this is where I found the storybook so..." Snow then lifts up the box and begins to dig through it, only to come up empty-handed, "sorry."

"Are we really surprised?" Regina asks, "that book is the embodiment of hope, and there's not a lot of that in the Underworld."

"Let's keep looking," David says before we split up and search through the loft.

Emma and I head upstairs before she begins to look through the drawers while I check in the desk behind the small wall. A few minutes pass when I hear someone coming up the stairs and I look over the railing to see Liam.

"Emma," he says, "can we talk?"

"Is this like a protective big brother talk where you wanna make sure I'm good enough for Killian?" she asks.

"No, because I already know you're not good enough."

I hold my gasp as I make eye contact with Emma before I hide behind the wall and continue to listen to their conversation.

"What?" Emma questions as Liam turns and begins to walk towards the railing, causing me to crawl under the desk and out of sight.

"Killian blames himself for ending up here but he told me what happened," Liam states, "sounds to me like it's not his fault. It's yours."

"I think we both made mistakes," Emma responds as I try to think of the game this man could possibly be playing.

"Killian's been fighting darkness his entire life and you pushed him off the cliff."

"I was trying to save his life."

"And it was a bloody selfish thing to do. He had a choice to die a hero, to move on, and you took that from him."

"That's not fair. I'm risking everything down here to save him."

"And is that what he really needs?" Liam asks, "or is that what you need?"

"Were you this self-righteous when you were alive?" Emma questions.

"When it came to my brother. Yes. If he defeats Hades today, he'll forgive himself and he'll have another chance to move on. When that happens, stop thinking about your own desires and let him go."

When he turns to leave, he makes eye contact with me at the last second before we stare at each other for a long moment then he goes downstairs. Once he's out of sight, I come out from under the desk and look to Emma, who looks conflicted. We share a look before following Liam downstairs. When Killian turns to look at us and instantly notices the distress on Emma's face, he makes his way over to her.

"You alright?" he asks her.

"Yeah. Fine," she lies, "let's keep looking."

When Killian looks to me for an answer, I quickly glance at Liam before joining Sam, Katherine, Austin, and the former Lost Boys as we look on the shelves under the stairs. Just as we finish looking through all of the books on there, the door swings open to reveal Henry as he enters the loft.

"Hey," he greets, "what's going on?"

"Looking for the storybook," I answer him, "you know, 'Underworld Edition.'"

"Really?" Henry asks as we all nod, "well, I think I might know exactly where it is."

"How would you know that?" Sam questions.

"The Apprentice," he answers, "I saw him at...at Granny's. He said the Sorcerer's mansion is down here and there's a bunch of his stuff inside, like the storybook."

"Finally," Regina sighs, "some good news."

"Well, sort of," Henry tells us, "the house is locked with magic, and the sheriff has the key."

"Your evil twin the sheriff?" Killian asks David, "Hades has panache, I'll give him that."

"Well, it's time my brother and I have an overdue chat," David says.

"You won't be alone," Snow adds, "I still owe him a punch in his pretty mouth for kissing me."

"He kissed you?"

"Thought it was you."

We all watch as Snow exits the room before David looks at us with wide, angry eyes.

"Let's go!" he exclaims.

"In the meanwhile," Liam says, "we should all go about our usual business. Hades has eyes everywhere. We can't have him learning what we're up to."

"Fine plan," Killian tells him, "can't wait to see the look on his face when he learns a valuable lesson...one should never mess with the Brothers Jones."

When Liam begins to put on his coat and head towards the door, I find myself making my way over to him with determination running through my veins.

"I'll walk you out," I tell him then turn to Sam, Katherine, Austin, and the former Lost Boys, "meet me downstairs in two minutes."

As soon as I see them all nod in understanding, I follow Liam out the door. When we get to the bottom of the stairs, he faces me.

"Listen, Everly-"

"No, you listen," I interrupt him, "I know you're protective of Killian. He's your younger brother after all. However, I'm equally as protective of Emma. What you said to her was uncalled for. She's done and risked a lot for Killian and he's done the same for her. And if I ever hear you talking to her like that again, I won't hesitate to use my magic."

"Your magic?" he questions.

"It can only hurt those with a darkened heart. And, by the way you talked to Emma, I can tell yours is pretty dark."

For a moment, we just stare at each other in a silent moment before he turns and walks down the street just as my group joins me.

"Everything okay?" Fletcher asks.

"Liam kinda booked it," Harry adds.

"What did you say?" Vincent smirks.

"He talked to Emma in a way I didn't appreciate," I answer, "so I gave him a warning."

"Classic Everly," Sam chuckles.

"Back to the matter at hand," Austin tells us, "I think I know how to find your loved ones."

"How?" I ask.

When he gestures behind me, we all turn our attention to see Griff staring at us before he looks around the streets then walks over to us.

"Pan has a message for you, Jones," he hisses.

"And what's that?" I ask with a glare.

"Meet him in the woods tomorrow at sunset. Bring your friends."

When he finishes, he sends me a sinister smirk before a cloud of green smoke surrounds him and he vanishes.

"Guess we know what we're doing tomorrow."

Out of nowhere, mine, Sam, and Katherine's phones go off and I pull it out to see a text from Emma.

Emma: Mom found the key. Meet us at the mansion.

"Let's go!" Sam exclaims.

***

After receiving the message from Emma, we meet up with Killian, Emma, Regina, Henry, and Liam before we all walk up the pathway of the mansion.

"The mansion is here," Killian states, "I guess old white beard was telling the truth."

"Do we have the key?" Liam asks.

"We have it," Killian answers, "but there's a protection spell on the door. Could be dangerous to open it."

"Oh, well, I suppose I'll do the honors," Liam offers, "I've been dead the longest. I'd say I have the least to lose."

"You always were the noble one," Killian then hands him the key as I roll my eyes.

We all watch as Liam approaches the door and puts the key into the lock. When nothing happens, he turns the key and opens the door. before we all walk inside the mansion and look around.

"Wonderful," Vincent sighs, "I love what they've done to the place."

"You're just as critical as I remember," Sam resorts.

"We should split up," Liam suggests, "move fast."

"Uh, yeah, I guess," Emma says then turns to Henry as they have a conversation.

"We'll check over there," Fletcher tells us before he goes down the hall with Harry and Vincent.

"We'll check the library," Sam announces then walks in the direction with Katherine.

Instead of finding a room to search for myself, like I should have, I follow Liam upstairs. When I get into the library upstairs, I see him looking in a box on top of a table. Curiosity takes the better of me as I hide behind the door before I watch him pull out the storybook we've been looking for then he opens it and flips through the pages. As he goes through the pages, there's a little hope in me that he'll hand over the book but that hope quickly vanishes when I see him tear out some of the pages before stuffing them inside his coat.

When he looks up and makes eye contact with me, I run down the hall and into another room. After I wait in the room for a while, I exit and go downstairs to see everyone looking through the book.

"Look," Emma tells them, "there are some pages missing."

As I enter the room, everyone looks to me then all of their attention goes back to the book, except Liam's, who stares at me with a bit of irritation in his eyes.

"What do you think, Liam?" Emma asks, drawing his attention back to her, "you found the book. Was there any evidence it had been tampered with?"

"No," he answers, "and until I find any, I choose to have hope. Those pages could have fallen out and still be in this house, and I, for one, won't give up without trying to find them."

Even though I try really hard not to scoff, Sam's attention turns my way before a concerned look forms on his face.

"You okay, Everly?" Sam asks before everyone looks to me.

"Fine," I sigh, then look to Liam, "I just agree with Liam. I really wanna find those pages."

"Then let's look together, shall we?" Liam responds before he approaches me and escorts me out of the room.

When he leads me to the backyard and we are truly alone, he forces me to come to a stop before turning me to face him.

"You're causing me a lot of trouble," he hisses as he takes out the pages from the storybook, "what will it take for you to forget about these?"

"Why do you want them so bad?" I question.

"Hades. He's threatening to tell Killian the reason I'm down here."

"Isn't it better to tell Killian then to hide it?"

"No."

When we hear footsteps and look to see Emma walking towards us, he quickly throws the papers into the well before pulling me closer to him.

"Say anything and I push you in," he whispers.

When I'm about to do something he'll regret, I notice the ink on his fingers. A smirk makes its way to my face at the sight before I look to Emma.

"Find anything out here?" she asks Liam.

"Emma," Liam greets, "I'm afraid a ship's captain can only be cooped up for so long. I had to come out and get some air. What brings you here?"

"Just checking on my sister," she smiles before she holds out a ring with a ruby on it, "and I wanted to show you this."

"Oh, it's the ring I gave Killian. I noticed he wasn't wearing it."

"Because he gave it to me. And you know what he told me when he did? That it belonged to a much better man than him. You're his hero. He doesn't think you can do any wrong. Which is why I can't figure out...why you would lie to him and threaten his daughter?"

There's nothing but silence for a moment as the two have a staredown before it's broken by someone exiting the mansion.

"Liam, Emma, Everly, what's going on?" Killian questions.

"She thinks I lied to you," Liam answers then puts an arm around me, "and threatened your precious daughter."

"He took the pages and threatened to push Everly down the well if she said anything," Emma defends as she pulls me away from Liam, "I can prove it. Ask him to show you his hands. He's been hiding them since I got here."

At Emma's accusation, Killian stares at her in disbelief before Liam lets out a sigh.

"Look, if it would help to clear things up, I'd be happy to," Liam says.

"That won't be necessary," Killian tells him as Emma and I look at him in confusion, "I don't need proof to know what's really going on here. Emma, when are you gonna admit that this isn't really about my brother?"

"What else would you think it was about?" Emma asks.

"Us. You think that if you can prove that Liam is a villain then I'll somehow feel like I was less of one. That you can convince me I'm worth saving and that we've got a future together."

"You agree with him?" I ask in shock as Emma continues to look at him in disbelief.

"Why bring me back if I should just move on?" he questions, "after we defeat Hades, I won't be returning with you. My fate isn't in Storybrooke. It should be determined here."

"It doesn't have to be. You can come home. You just have to forgive yourself," Emma tells him, causing Killian to go silent before he looks away from us, "thing is, no matter how many times I tell you, or anybody else does, you have to do it yourself."

Emma gives him one last look then walks past him and back into the mansion.

"Emma!" Killian calls after her; however, before he can follow her, Liam stops him.

"Let her go, Killian," he tells him, "it's for the best."

Then I watch as Killian looks down before Liam clenches his fist.

"Your hand," he says, "you are hiding something."

"It's nothing," Liam responds.

Before Liam can react, Killian grabs his hand and stares at it in disbelief.

"It's ink from the pages," Killian states in anger, "Emma was right. Did you really threaten Everly, too? Why would you lie to me?"

"Because he's got much bigger secrets than what's inside that book. Like the truth about what he did to us."

At the sound of the new voice, we turn to see a group of men approach us, causing Killian to instantly grab my wrist and pulls me behind him.

"What truth is he talking about, Liam?" Killian questions his brother, "what does it have to do with the missing pages?"

"Your brother is not the hero he pretends to be," the leader of the unknown men tells Killian, "I found that out when I stopped by the tavern for my usual drink. He had a rather...unexpected guest. Hades," Killian looks to his brother in disbelief before the man continues, "he traded all of our souls for the Eye of the Storm. Hades threatened to reveal the truth unless your brother destroyed the pages from that book."
