•Chapter 12: Red•
After walking around Underbrooke for only five minutes, we receive an urgent call from Snow before we rush to the loft. As soon as we enter the loft, surprise fills my body when I see Ruby was here, and alive.
"Is she okay?" Sam asks.
"We don't know," David responds.
"Why is she down here?" Katherine questions.
"We don't know," Killian answers.
"How long do you think she'll be out?" I say.
"I don't know," Regina tells us, "we hit her with some pretty strong stuff."
"Do you mean-"
"Magic," Emma interrupts me, "we hit her with magic."
"Where has she been since she left Storybrooke?" Katherine asks.
"I don't know," Snow replies, "she went to find her pack."
"Unless they're dead," Regina sighs, "I'd say she's sniffing the wrong place."
"Any explanation for what she's doing here?" Austin questions.
"Just this," Emma answers as she hands me a torn piece of blue plaid cloth that looks oddly familiar but I couldn't put my finger on it.

After a while, Ruby wakes with a gasp and looks at us with confusion, causing everyone to make their way over to her.
"Where am I?" she asks.
"The Underworld," Snow tells her.
"The Underworld? I don't understand. I used a tracking spell so the cyclone would bring me to Zelena."
"Ruby," Emma says, "she's down here, too."
"Wait, love, you came here looking for Zelena?" Killian asks.
"Why am I not surprised?" Regina sighs, "what did my sister do now?"
"It's my friend, Dorothy," Ruby responds, "Zelena wanted her magic slippers so that she could get back to her baby."
"I knew that cloth looked familiar," I mumble so that only Henry could hear.
"Ruby," Snow says, "what did Zelena do to your friend?"
"That's why I'm here," Ruby answers, "I don't know. Dorothy went to face her and just disappeared. Mulan and I looked everywhere, but we couldn't find her."
"Wait!" Katherine exclaims, "you know Mulan?!"
"Not the time, Kat," Sam tells her as she begins to go silent.
Felix and I stifle our laughs before everyone's attention goes back to Ruby.
"Snow, this is all my fault," Ruby continues, "none of this would have happened if I hadn't shown up in Oz. It's just one more life that I have destroyed because of what I am."
"That is not true, and you know it, Ruby," Snow responds, "we'll find out what happened to Dorothy. I promise."
As soon as the last two words register in my head, I tune out the world around me and look to Felix, thinking about how I may have just made a promise I'm not prepared to keep.
"Sunshine."
At the sound of my nickname, I break out of my trance to see Felix staring back at me with worry in his eyes.
"What?" I ask as I look around the room, "where is everyone?"
"Emma, Snow, Ruby, and Regina went to go talk to Zelena," he answers, "and Henry, Hook, David, Austin, Sam, and Katherine went to the haunted phone."
"Why did they leave us?"
"We were trying to get your attention for like five minutes. I told them I'd stay with you while they went out. Is everything okay?"
At his question, I look down for a moment, trying to gather my thoughts, before I look back up into his concerned eyes.
"I don't think so, Felix," I finally say.
"What's wrong?" he asks.
"I don't think I can keep that promise."
"Yes, you can. You've never broken a promise. You can keep this one. And it's only if you have to leave without me."
"But I did break a promise."
"When?"
"I'm the reason you were in Neverland," I answer as I turn away from him, unable to look him in the eyes, "I never came back when we met at the ball. I'm the reason you were so corrupted by Pan. And I'm the reason you died in the first place. If I never went back in time, none of this would have happened. You would still be alive and happy."
"You didn't break that promise, Sunshine," he tells me as he turns me to face him, "you came back to me in Neverland. I may not have known that at the time but I know that now. I'm glad you went to the ball and I'm glad I went to Neverland. I got to meet you twice and fall for you twice. I may have been alive if I never met you, but I would not be happy because you wouldn't be in my life."
The next thing I know, Felix wraps his arms around my waist before he places a gentle kiss on my lips then he places his forehead on mine as we share a smile.
"I love you."
"I love you, too."
Our moment is cut short when David, Killian, Austin, Sam, and Katherine enter the loft and just stare at the scene in front of them. Sam, Katherine, and Austin begin to laugh then make their way to the kitchen as David and Killian go from staring to slightly glaring before Felix rapidly takes his arms off my waist and puts them at his sides.
"What just happened?" Killian asks.
"Nothing," Felix and I quickly respond.
Killian raises an eyebrow at us before he shakes his head at us then he goes and gets Henry's storybook then sits down at the table. As he begins to flip through pages, I look at David to see him still staring at Felix and me.
"You're just going to let that slide?" he questions Killian.
"No," Killian answers, "I'll have a little chat with them later."
"I'll join you."
As Felix takes an unsteady breath, I let out a quiet, irritated groan.
"And I thought I only had to worry about Emma and the pirate," David mumbles as he walks past Felix and me to the bathroom.
When I look up at Felix's worried look, I try to stifle a laugh then go and sit at the table with Killian before Felix takes the seat next to me.
"Arm's distance," Killian mutters before Felix moves his chair away from me as I watch Killian go through the book.
"What exactly are you looking for?" I ask as I hear the three in the kitchen begin to rummage through the fridge.
"Something about Auntie Em," Killian responds.
"Auntie Em? As in Dorothy's aunt?"
"Yes."
My eyes widen then I quickly relax when I remember that the Wizard of Oz is real just like everything else in the book. If I ever do meet Dorothy, I really have to try not to have a panic attack because the Wizard of Oz was one of my favorite movies when Emma, Henry, and I were in New York.
"Anything?" David questions then looks to Felix and me, "too close."
"Just that Auntie Em dies in Kansas," Killian responds as Felix moves farther away from me, "no details, not a clue."
After he answers, Felix and I get up and go to Sam, Katherine, and Austin in the kitchen to find them all smirking at us as we join them.
"You couldn't have sent a warning that they were coming?" I question.
"We didn't think you and Felix were going to be all lovey-dovey," Sam answers.
"We haven't been together in two years," Felix tells him, "what did you expect?"
"Not to walk in on you guys making mushy faces," Katherine laughs.
"You make mushy faces with each other," I state, "why didn't you think that would happen with Felix and me?"
"Because this doesn't usually happen with you," Sam responds.
"Because I had no..."
I find myself stopping mid-sentence when I see the look guilty look on Felix's face.
"You know what," I say, "it's fine. Just a little warning next time would be nice."
"Got it," Austin smiles.
The three of them laugh again and, when it dies down, I hear David sigh so I decide to practice my favorite hobby and listen to what he and Killian are talking about.
"I can't believe it has to be me," he tries whispers to Killian; however, talks louder than he thinks, "Snow should be home. She should be with our-"
'Home?' I mouth to Sam and Katherine.
'Ask him,' Sam mouths back to me.
"She missed this time with Everly and Emma," he continues, "and now it's happening all over again. We shouldn't be here!"
At the sound of his words, I look up at Felix to see his jaw clench a bit along with Sam's before I look over to Killian and see a somewhat uncomfortable look on his face. When David catches me looking back at him, he turns his attention back to Killian to see the look on the pirate's face.
"I didn't-"
"No, no, no, you're right. You shouldn't be here," Killian interrupts him, "I realize that I haven't said it yet, but thank you. I didn't want Emma to do this, let alone drag everyone along."
"Hey," David says, "we all made our own choices."
"Really? I didn't know you cared."
"Alright. I did it for Everly and Emma."
"Ah, figured."
"And I...guess you've grown on me a bit."
"Well, I tend to have that effect on people," he jokes.
"Don't push it," David warns.
"Look, your name's not on a headstone, mate. You can go. Ruby is your one ticket out of here. You have to take it."
"I wish it didn't have to be like this, but you're right. I just hope we can help Ruby."
"Okay, I waited long enough," I say, drawing their attention, "where are you going?"
"I'm going with Ruby to Oz then I'm going back to Storybrooke to be with Neal," he answers, "I just wish it was Snow."
As soon as David finishes explaining what's going on, I feel a presence next to me and look to see Austin.
"Killian, my dad gave your Hook the power to carve names in the stones, right?" he asks.
"Yeah," Killian responds, "why?"
"I think I have an idea."

When we meet everyone at the cemetery, we watch as Ruby places the piece of cloth from Dorothy's dress on Auntie Em's tombstone, who now is in the River of Lost Souls forever due to Hades slipping her some water from the River.
"Ready," Ruby announces.
"Put these on," Regina tells her as she hands her the silver slippers, "think of where you want to go. Then click your heels three times," Ruby nods as Regina turns to us, "David, you should take her hand and hold tight."
"So, I guess this is goodbye," David says as he turns to Snow before she pulls him in for a hug as he chuckles a little, "we've done this before, we can do it again."
"When you get home," Snow responds, "tell Neal that I will be there as fast as I can."
"Well, I was actually hoping that you could tell him that for me."
"David, you know I can't leave."
"Now you can."
"What?"
"I removed your name from the headstone," Killian tells her.
"Am I missing something?" Regina asks, "Emma already tried that?"
"Yeah," Emma says, "and it didn't work."
"Because you tried to erase the names," David explains as he begins to usher Snow towards the headstones with our names on them, "the rule down here is simple...a life for a life," we all walk in front of the stones to see Snow's name crossed out and replaced with David's, "so I traded mine with yours."
"David!" Snow exclaims, causing David to make her face him.
"If one of us gets to go home and see our son, it should be you."
"How did you do this?" Emma asks.
"It was Austin's idea," Killian answers her as their attention turns towards the raven-haired boy.
"My father enchanted Killian's hook to carve the markers in the first place," Austin explains, "he can't erase the names, but he can change them."
"Your name's on there," Felix whispers into my ear.
"I know," I respond, "we'll figure something out."
Snow begins to say goodbye to everyone before I hear Regina ask Snow to check in on Roland and a smile makes its way onto my face, thinking about how much I really miss that kind. After saying her goodbye to Emma, Snow then turns to me and pulls me in for a hug.
"Stay safe," she tells me.
"I always do," I respond before she laughs then we end our hug and she looks to Felix.
"You watch out for her," she demands.
"I will," he replies as he places his arm around my shoulder.
"Arm's length!" Killian and David exclaim, causing Felix to jump and pull his arm away, and Snow and I share to laugh before she turns to David and they share one last kiss.
"Arm's length," I mutter, causing Killian to nudge me.
After they kiss, Snow turns to Ruby and takes her hand before David and Snow look into each other's eyes one last time as Ruby clicks her heels three times and the two of them disappear in a cloud of silver smoke.
***
After leaving the cemetery, we all go back to the loft. As soon as we get there, Sam, Katherine, Austin, Felix, and I head to the kitchen as the adults sit around the table and talk. After about twenty minutes, I notice Henry sitting on the bed upstairs, staring at a page from his book, before I smile then walk up the steps and sit next to him.
"Whatcha looking at, Hen?" I ask.
My question causes him to smile back at me before he hands me the page. When the paper is in my hands, I look at it to see Ruby and Dorothy sharing a kiss as the munchkins, Mulan, and Snow surround them.
"True love," he tells me as he takes the page back and begins to write on the back of it.
I watch as he finishes Ruby and Dorothy's story before he begins to draw a picture of Snow holding Neal, causing my smile grows knowing something good came out of coming down here.
