"They're coming back, so we don't have much time to talk," Deaton said as he prepared disinfectant for Meilani's wound. A wound that Lord only knew how long it'd take to heal.
Meilani stumbled back a step at the sight of Deaton putting rubbing alcohol on a cotton ball. "You're gonna put that on my wound?"
Deaton blinked at her and gestured to the large gash across Meilani's side. "Do you want it to get infected?" When Meilani shook her head, he dabbed the cotton ball along the gash earning a hiss from the wolf girl. "It'll heal the same, but not as quickly because of Derek."
"Okay, how do you know all this? Actually, how do you know anything?"
Deaton placed a gauze over the wound and taped it to Meilani's skin with medical tape so it'd stay there. "It's a long story. What I can tell you is that I know about your kind. Your kind... I can help." He glanced over his shoulder to the man on the examination table that had long scratches down his chest. "This - this is something different."
"Wha - well... do you know what did it?" Meilani asked.
"No, but the Argents will. This is the crucial part: they'll have some kind of record, or book. It'll have descriptions, histories, notations of all the things they've discovered."
Meilani gaped at Deaton. There was a whole book of things that were supernatural and could be dangerous running around? She felt like she was in an episode of Supernatural. Next thing she knew, Dean and Sam Winchester would be bursting through the door and shooting a silver bullet into her, most likely laced in wolfs bane for added measure. As hot as Meilani thought Dean Winchester was, she definitely was glad he wasn't real.
"All the things? How many different things are there?"
Meilani froze when she heard the sound of tires on the gravel outside the clinic. She mentally cursed to herself and looked to Deaton for help. He shooed her into the dark room just off to one side of the examination room. She closed the door just as Chris stepped foot into the room.
"It appears I need to make a much more prominent closed sign," Deaton remarked calmly.
"Hello, Alan," Gerard greeted, stepping into the room with Chris and a very large man behind them. "It's been a while. The last I heard, you had retired."
Deaton gave Gerard a deadpan expression. "Last I heard, you followed a code of conduct."
"If you hadn't noticed, this body is one of ours."
Meilani furrowed her eyebrows and tried to peer into the room without being seen. The man on that table was one of Gerard's men? Well, she definitely had to be careful now because Gerard was going to be tougher with his hunting now that one of his men died. Great.
"I did," Deaton replied. "I also noticed the gunpowder residue on his fingertips. So don't assume I'll be swayed by your philosophy just 'cause I'll answer a few questions."
"He was only twenty-four," Chris informed.
Deaton turned his attention to Chris and Meilani was shocked at how dark his face turned. She had never seen the man anything but stoic. "Killers come in all ages, Argent."
"All ages, sizes and shapes," Gerard added. "It's the last one that concerns us."
"How about you tell us what you found?" Chris suggested, but it came off as more of an order.
Deaton walked over to the body and twisted the man's neck to expose a cut on the back of it. "You see this cut? Precise. Almost surgical, but this isn't the wound that killed him. This had a more... interesting purpose."
Gerard glanced up at Deaton from where he stood hovered over the body. "Relating to the spine?"
"That's right. Whatever made this cut was laced with a paralytic toxin potent enough to disable all motor functions," Deaton explained and then hovered his hand over the claw marks down the man's chest. "These are the cause of death. Notice the patterns one each side?"
"Five for each finger," Chris answered.
"Each claw," Gerard collected and stood back to his full height.
"As you can see, it dug in, slashed upward, eviscerating the lungs and slicing through the bone of the rib cage with ease," Deaton continued. "I've never seen anything like this before."
Chris was silent for a long moment as he studied the body of his late partner. "Any idea at all what killed him?"
"No, but I can tell you it's fast, remarkably strong, and has the capacity to render its victims essentially helpless within seconds."
"If you're saying we should be cautious, we get it," Chris said.
"I'm saying you should be afraid. Be very afraid. In the natural world, predators with paralytic toxins use them to catch and eat their prey. This prey wasn't eaten. That means whatever killed him only wanted to kill him. In fact, killing may be its only purpose."
Meilani sighed as she collapsed back against the wall next to the door. She knew Deaton was talking to her and trying to convey a message to her.
She was utterly and ridiculously screwed if she wasn't careful.

Meilani walked into the house and shook her hair out after being caught in the rain. She tossed her house keys into the bowl on the table next to the front door and walked into the kitchen. She stopped short when Scott was at the center island, staring glumly down at his water.
"Oh... hey," Meilani greeted softly, wiping her eyes. She wasn't sure what was tears and what was rain droplets anymore. "Why are you here?"
"Allison didn't show up," Scott replied and turned to face his sister, expression softening when he saw the distraught look on his twin's face. It must be a twin thing, but the second he saw her he felt her pain. "Mei, what's wrong?"
Meilani rolled her lips into her mouth, not knowing if she should tell Scott was going on. Sure he knew about her other life now and he was there when her and Allison saw the scaled creature in Isaac's house, but was it worth it to tell him?
"Tell the truth," Scott said, sliding off the stool and walking over to her.
"I'm scared, Scott," Meilani confessed, her eyes welling with tears and the urge to cry came back full force. "I'm so scared because I don't know what's going on and - and Allison's grandfather is extra on edge now because one of his men just died. And - I just - "
Scott was quick to bring Meilani into his chest as she broke down. He hugged her tightly and continued to whisper to her that it was going to be okay.
"Scott, there's something else out there. It's paralyzing its prey and then killing them," Meilani informed once she was calmed a bit and sniffled as she stepped back from him. "I don't know what it is, but Deaton said that the Argents have a whole book of supernatural creature. It can be anything."
Scott opened his mouth to respond when Meilani's phone beeped in her back pocket. She sighed and took it out of her back pocket to see a text from Stiles.
STILES
pck me uip from csr shop
Meilani furrowed her eyebrows at Stiles' typos. Usually he fixed any errors in his texts, saying he didn't like seeing the messed up spellings. The other thing that struck her as odd was he asked her to get him from the car shop where his Jeep was being fixed up. Shouldn't he have gotten it back since there wasn't much wrong with it?
"Um... will you come with me to get Stiles?" Meilani asked, glancing up at her brother who nodded.
The twins made their way out to the driveway to get into the car the two shared with each other since them and Melissa sharing one car didn't exactly work out. So the twins had saved up enough money to get an old model of a car, even though Stiles was usually the one to drive anyway. Though, Meilani guessed it was good to have the second car now that Stiles' Jeep seemed to be out of commission for a bit.
When the twins pulled up in front of the car shop, there were cops and ambulances outside. That only settled the dread in Meilani's stomach even more. What the hell was going on?
Stiles got into the front seat - Scott having taken the back seat so the couple could sit together in the front - and he seemed anything but okay.
"Sti, are you okay?" Meilani asked and when he didn't answer, she sighed. "Don't lie to me either. I have a built in lie detector."
Stiles moved his gaze from his hands to his girlfriend who gestured to her ears, indicating she meant her enhanced hearing which helped her hear his heartbeat. If it sped up, that indicated he was lying. "Yeah, but you were right. This thing that's running around? It's not like you. I mean, its eyes were almost... like... reptilian. There was something about it."
"What do you mean?" Meilani pried. If Stiles had seen this thing, maybe it could make it easier for her to figure out what it was. She didn't get a good look at Isaac's house and it sounded like Stiles was face to face with this thing.
"You know when you see, like, a friend in a Halloween mask, but all you can actually see are their eyes, and you feel like you know them, but you just can't figure out who it is?"
Scott wrapped his hands around the headrest of Meilani's seat and pulled himself forward so he could poke his head between the front seats. "Stiles, are you saying you know who this is?"
"No, but I think it knew me."
═══*.·:·.☽✧ ✦ ✧☾.·:·.*═══
"I'm sorry about the other day. I'm trying. We'll get through this. I know, because I love you," Stiles said to Scott just as Meilani stopped in front of the two boys.
"Am I interrupting a weird bro-mantic moment between you two?" Meilani asked, raising an amused eyebrow at the two boys who jumped at her sudden appearance.
Scott shifted awkwardly on the bottom step he and Stiles sat on. "Stiles is relaying Allison's message to me."
"Why is my boyfriend your messenger?"
"He's the only one we can trust! You can't do it because you have to stay away from her, too," Scott defended himself and turned back to Stiles. "Is she coming to the game tonight?"
"Yes, okay? Message complete," Stiles groaned and stood up, wrapping an arm around Meilani's waist and greeted her with a kiss. "If I ever have to say I love you to your twin again, I might throw up."
Meilani giggled and kissed her boyfriend's cheek. "I think it's rather endearing for two boys to say I love you to each other."
"I hate you," Stiles huffed, playfully pushing her away from him. "Now tell me about your boss."
Meilani glanced around them in the hall and noticed not many kids walked around, so at least they had some privacy. "He thinks that the Argents keeps some kind of, uh, records of all the things that they've hunted. Like a book."
Stiles clapped his hands together as recognition flashed across his face. "He probably means a bestiary."
"What?" Scott and Meilani asked in unison.
"A bestiary," Stiles repeated.
Scott laughed and gave his best friend an odd look. "I think you mean bestiality."
"Nope, pretty sure I don't. It's like an encyclopedia of mythical creatures."
Meilani groaned and ran a hand down her face. "Okay, why am I the only one besides Scott that doesn't know anything about this stuff? It's quite literally my life now and I know next to nothing about this whole supernatural stuff."
"Okay, you know... you're kind of my girlfriend, you're a creature of the night, it's kind of like a priority of mine. Need to make sure you're safe kind of thing."
"Okay, look, if we can find whatever this book is and it can tell us what or who it is... then we need that book."
Scott and Meilani both looked to Stiles with expectant expressions and he rolled his eyes, running off to find Allison.
After making Stiles run back and forth between them and Allison all day - and Stiles complaining to them both that he was going to kill the twins - they found out that Gerard had a book bound in leather in his office in the school. They needed to get that key.
═══*.·:·.☽✧ ✦ ✧☾.·:·.*═══
Later on that night, Meilani had to play in the lacrosse game and to say that the kids were huge, especially one by the name of Eddie Obomowitz aka The Abomination, was an understatement. The kid barreled into anyone that ran past him and three kids already left the game thanks to a broken leg or arm. Meilani could practically hear her mother's panicked heart racing in the stands and she wished that her mother had come to any other game but this one. Scott had gone over there three times already to assure Melissa that Meilani was going to be just fine, making up some excuse that the boys on the other team wouldn't hurt a girl.
It was the semi-final game and Beacon Hills really needed the win. Meilani had never been more glad to be a werewolf in her entire life because at least she'd be walking out of this game alive and without something broken. Thank you super healing.
"McCall, what are you waiting for?" Jackson barked at her as he gripped onto her arm in the middle of the field between plays. "This is the semi-finals - bring that roid-head into the ground."
Meilani scoffed and ripped her arm out of Jackson's gloved grip on her arm. "Me? You said that I was a cheater."
"Yeah, and that freak of nature being on the field is fair?" Jackson whined, gesturing to the kid Eddie who had to be bigger than Big Foot. "Do something!"
"I can't! Not while Allison's grandfather is here."
Coach Finstock had to bring in a new player and Stiles was nowhere to be found, mainly because he ran off to search Gerard's office while Gerard stayed to watch the game with Allison and wouldn't be back to his office. Much to Meilani's luck, Boyd was in the stands and Coach Finstock chose him to be on the field. Boyd wasn't as much of a threat to her as Isaac, Erica or Derek, but Meilani was still weary about the kid.
Though it was good for the team that Boyd was in the game because as soon as Eddie rushed Boyd, the kid was flown back and onto the grass.
Meilani's eyes widened when she noticed the yellow in Boyd's eyes. He was going to get them all exposed if he stayed out here any longer. She and Jackson exchanged an uneasy look before he pushed her towards Boyd to get him off the field. "Boyd!" She hissed the second the two were close enough for her to whisper. "You need to get off the field - your eyes, someone is gonna see you."
Boyd ignored her as the whistle blew and he ran off to the middle of the field.
Meilani kept an eye on Boyd as the play started and since she was the only one open, Jackson tossed her the ball and she shot the ball into the other team's net which placed them in the lead. However, Meilani only had about ten seconds of celebration before the kid Eddie slammed into her side and she flew back onto the grass, her leg bending at an odd angle.
Allison and Scott rushed over to her to see if she was okay. Scott gripped onto his twin's hand as she groaned and breathed heavily to try and block out the pain.
"I'm okay, I'm healing," Meilani gasped, squeezing Scott's hand. "The book."
"It's not in his office," Allison whispered to Meilani as a crowd began to form around Meilani to see what was going on. Multiple gasps and groans were heard when the crowd caught sight of her injured leg. "It's gotta be at the house."
"Your leg is broken, Mei."
Meilani used Scott to help sit her up and she shook her head. "It won't be for long."
Scott helped his sister stand up and wrapped an arm around his shoulders, the sound of bones snapping back into the place could be heard in Meilani's ears.
"Sweetheart!" Melissa called as she ran over, stopping in her tracks when she saw Meilani's leg was straightened out again.
"I'm fine," Meilani assured Melissa and Coach Finstock who both seemed equally as shocked that her leg had straightened out.
"I could have sworn I heard bone breaking from where I sat."
"Heard it? I felt it," Coach Finstock said, grimacing at the thought.
Meilani leant in her brother's side and waved a hand dismissively. "I swear, guys, I'm fine."
"We should go," Allison said to her grandfather, walking over to him.
"Hold on. I want to ask her one more thing," Gerard replied, turning his attention to a now a panicked Meilani. Part of her forgot about Gerard being there and the fact that she just magically healed was bad because he was the only one in the crowd besides Allison and Erica that knew about the supernatural. This was not good.
═══*.·:·.☽✧ ✦ ✧☾.·:·.*═══
Allison and Meilani sat quietly in the back of Gerard's car after the game. Gerard had insisted that Meilani join them for dinner afterwards and Scott freaked out that he couldn't go and be there as well. Allison assured him that she'd make sure that her grandfather didn't do anything.
"Oh good, you're back. How was the game?" Chris asked, hearing the front door close and Gerard and Allison stand in the archway to the kitchen.
"Why don't you ask the star of the game?" Gerard stepped aside to reveal Meilani awkwardly stood behind him.
Chris nearly dropped the knife he dried in his hand with a hand towel. His eyes flickered to Allison who glanced away from guiltily. "Well... um... good thing we made extra food."
The Argents and Meilani took to sitting in the dining room. Allison and Meilani sat on either side of Gerard while Allison's mother sat next to Allison and Chris sat at the other end of the table across from Gerard. The room was silent aside from the chewing and dishes clanking against each other as they all ate.
"Alright, why is everyone so quiet?" Gerard asked, wiping his mouth with his napkin. "Is it that uncomfortable that Meilani and Allison were friends and that Meilani's twin dated her?"
Chris shot Gerard a look. "Did you ask them if it would be uncomfortable?"
"Okay, I know it's been a few centuries since I was a teenager, but back then we dated and broke up all the time," Gerard said, eyes bouncing between all the members at the table. "We made friends and lost them. It happens."
"We're fine," Allison assured her grandfather and took a long sip of her water. "Right, Meilani?"
Meilani cleared her throat and her eyes met Allison's. "Yeah, we're all fine. No worries."
"Then I can ask why Scott and Allison broke up?"
Meilani blinked at Gerard, not knowing what to tell him since Meilani had no idea what he was told. She knew Chris and his wife believed the three no longer spoke to each other, but that was it. "Um... she broke up with Scott?"
Chris, Allison and Allison's mom all froze, all wearing the same are you serious look. Meilani rolled her lips into her mouth and slouched in her chair. Clearly that was not the right response to give. Woops.
"No offense, Meilani, but I think Allison felt that the two of them were just growing apart," Chris countered. "I know you're just trying to defend and protect Scott, but I don't think we should put blame on Allison."
"As if the father's opinion isn't biased," Gerard said, shaking his head. "How do you know they weren't as passionate as Romeo and Juliet?"
"Juliet and Romeo committed ritual suicide. They could have used a little less passion."
Allison flashed Chris a desperate and awkward expression. "Can we please talk about anything else? I'm sure Meilani doesn't want to talk about her brother's love life without him present."
"Brilliant idea," Allison's mother readily agreed.
"Meilani, how about you help me grab dessert from the kitchen?"
Meilani silently stood up and followed Chris into the kitchen where she was immediately shoved up against the cabinet.
"Do I need to remind you of the details of what would happen to you if he found out what we all know?" Chris growled quietly, his face a mere few inches from Meilani's as his arm held her against the cabinet.
"No, but I'm wondering what would happen to you, actually," Meilani whispered, eyes dark as she glared at Chris. Sure the man was letting her live because she was no threat to anyone, but that didn't mean she had to be nice or civil with him. He caused her way too many problems. Not as many as Derek, but still caused her way too much for one person to handle.
Chris chuckled darkly and pressed Meilani further against the cabinet if that were even possible. "Well, it wouldn't be very good for me, but then I'd have plenty of chances to redeem myself. That wouldn't be good for you." He shoved himself away from Meilani and stepped away from her.
Meilani glared at Chris, stepping away from the cabinet and grabbed a platter of brownies and cookies while Chris grabbed a home-made cake. The two walked both plates into the dining room and placed them both in the middle.
"Do you mind if Meilani and I are both excused? I have some English notes that I have to go over with Meilani," Allison asked, throwing her napkin onto her empty dinner plate.
"I'm not sure that's appropriate," Chris denied.
"Chris, allow the girls to go do schoolwork. It's important if they want to get accepted into good colleges some day," Gerard defended and nodded his head towards the stairs. "Girls, you may leave."
Meilani didn't hesitate to stand up along with Allison and walked up the steps. She went to go into Allison's room, but was tugged in the opposite direction and into a guest room.
"Hurry," Allison whispered, shutting the door behind her.
The two began to search the room for the leather bound book that Meilani desperately needed and came up empty handed until Allison removed a sheet over a small safe. She dropped the sheet in a huff. "There goes that plan."
Meilani knelt in front of the safe and titled her head as she analyzed it. If she used her hearing, she could probably hear the clicks locking in place to open the safe. She was about to put Dean and Sam Winchester to shame with her breaking into safe ability. Placing her ear to the safe, Meilani turned the dial this way and that until it unlocked and swung open.
Allison's jaw dropped with a breathy laugh. "Wow, do you want to hit up a bank?"
Meilani laughed quietly along with Allison and pulled out the leather bound bestiary. She flipped it open and skimmed through the multiple pages of drawings and notes. "Jesus, I really am in an episode of Supernatural."
Allison playfully pushed Meilani's arm and twisted her head to read the journal Meilani had opened. "Do you see anything?"
"Um... salmon moutarde creme fraiche? What is this?"
"A recipe," Allison replied, deflated. "It's a cook book."
Meilani slammed the journal closed and tossed it back into the safe, shutting it closed and locking it back up. Her phone ringing in her pocket caused her to scramble to pull it out and answer before Gerard heard them in his room. "Hello?"
"Babe!"
"Sti, I can't talk right now. I have to call you back," Meilani whispered and quickly hung up before Stiles could respond. She shoved the phone back into her pocket and leant back against her heels. "Without that book, I have no idea what this thing is."
"Where else do we look?"
"Well, what haven't we thought of?" Meilani asked, chewing on her lip in thought.
Allison shook her head, scratching the back of her head as she thought. "Maybe it's not a book. Something else that he keeps close to him." It was quiet for a long moment before Allison abruptly stood up, getting an idea. "I know where it is. The USB on his keys."
"You're brilliant!" Meilani quietly praised before the girls ran out of the room and made sure to casually walk back down the stairs to make it seem like nothing was going on. "Um, Principal Argent, Chris and Mrs. Argent, thank you for dinner. I just realized that I have to pick up my mom from work."
Without waiting for a reply, Meilani was out of the Argent's house and speeding the car over to the high school. She tried to call Stiles three times on the way over, but he never responded so he left a voice messages telling him that she needed him and the keys. That she needed the USB on his keys because that's where the bestiary was.
Luck was apparently on Meilani's side because Gerard's keys were still in the doorknob of the house. She went to grab the USB and heard the same scream that she heard in Isaac's house. The creature was in the school. Grabbing the keys, Meilani rushed out of the office and over to the pool where she heard the scream.
Stiles and Derek floated in the pool with Stiles keeping him up. Meilani rushed over to them and hauled them both out of the pool, fully transformed into her werewolf side. She growled as the creature tackled her from the side and they landed on the tiled flooring of the outside of the pool. The creatures tail wrapped around Meilani's ankle and flung her into the mirror behind her, sending her crashing to the ground with glass.
Meilani grabbed a shard of glass and held it up as the creature crept closer. It stopped when it saw its reflection in the glass and was gone before Meilani could even blink. She watched as it crashed through the sun window above and collapsed back onto her butt with a sigh.
Stiles, Derek and Meilani made their way out of the school and Meilani used the USB on the keys to plug it into Stiles' laptop. The bestiary was in some kind of language that Meilani couldn't tell what it was.
"How are we supposed to figure out what this thing is?" Meilani snapped, refraining from punching the car because she didn't feel like paying to have the mechanic remove the dent from the car that she would leave behind.
"It's called the Kanima," Derek informed as he made his way over with Erica in tow.
"You knew the whole time," Stiles retorted, pissed that Derek had never said anything.
"No. Only when it was confused by its own reflection," Derek replied.
Meilani furrowed her eyebrows and crossed her arms. "It doesn't know what it is."
"Or who," Derek added.
"What else do you know?" Stiles asked.
Derek shook his head with a shrug. "Just stories mostly. Rumors. It's a shape-shifter, but it's not right. It's like a..."
"An abomination," Stiles noted.
Before Derek and Erica could turn to walk away, Meilani stopped them in their tracks. "Derek, we need to work together on this. Maybe even tell the Argents."
"You trust them?" Derek barked.
Meilani scoffed and threw her arms to the side. "Derek, no one trusts anyone. That's the real problem here. While we are here arguing about who's on what side, there is something scarier, stronger and faster than any of us. It's killing people and we still don't even know anything about it!"
Derek stared down Meilani for a long moment. "I know one thing. When I find it... I'm gonna kill it."
═══*.·:·.☽✧ ✦ ✧☾.·:·.*═══
After dropping Stiles off home, Meilani made her way to the hospital where she really did have to pick Melissa up from work. Just not at the time she told the Argents so she could get to their keys. She parked her car right outside the doors leading to the hospital and stepped out to go in and let Melissa know she was there.
However, before she could get any further than a step away from the car, she was spun away by Gerard and he shoved a knife into her side. She gasped as the pain shot through her side. She had just healed from Derek's wound too.
"Don't move," Gerard ordered, tugging Meilani closer to him. "Even though I can practically feel the tissue around the blade already trying to heal, you never know with a beta."
Meilani's eyes widened as the one thing she didn't want to happen, happened. Gerard knew about her and now there was a huge target on her back again. This time by Gerard and not from Chris.
"Besides, we'd lose this perfect picture," Gerard continued, wiggling the blade around in Meilani's side. "The sight of a grandfather hugging his granddaughter after hearing the good news." He pretended to hug Meilani and pulled back just slightly. "I can play the nice, doddering grandpa who likes to cook and tell stories and be sweet and charming. Trust me, I can do it far better than you playing average teenage girl with a loving boyfriend and twin. Are you listening?"
Meilani's eyes flashed yellow for a moment as the anger coursed through her, her wolf side fighting hard to try and heal - even with the knife still in her side. "Yes."
"Perfect," Gerard whispered. "Now, you're gonna do me a favor one of these days and you're gonna do it because, if you don't, this knife goes in them."
Meilani's eyes followed Gerard's gaze to see them pointed directly on Scott and Melissa who stood by the front door laughing and talking. Scott had gone back to the hospital with Melissa after the game because Eddie had bruised his side and Melissa wanted to make sure his ribs didn't break. Then he opted to stay till her shift was over so he wouldn't have to walk home and since Stiles would have been too busy to drive him.
"Meilani," Gerard called and earned her attention again. "I truly believe that it's so much easier when bad things don't have to happen to good people. Don't you agree?"
Meilani gasped as Gerard dug the knife just a bit deeper into her side. Her dark gaze met Gerard's as the knife was slipped out of her. "Yes."
Melissa and Scott walked over to the car once Gerard out of sight and Melissa smiled warmly at her daughter. "Hey, sweetie. You okay?"
Meilani squeezed her eyes shut as she felt her side stitch itself back up and opened them to see Scott trying to hide the concern on his face when he noticed the blood stain around Meilani's side. "Yeah, I'm fine."
She definitely was not fine.
