THIRTY ONE
I wish I could tell you why it took me so damn long to finish Vincent and the Doctor because I love this episode and I knew I'd love writing this episode but I just couldn't get into the jam of it for quite some time so that was annoying. Thankfully it is here now though. Hopefully, I did it justice. I'll get the second and third chapters of it out soon but for now, enjoy

VINCENT VAN GOGH
━━━━━∙⋆⋅⋆∙━━━━━
Ever since Rory had died nothing felt the same to Hollie even with her new art room on the TARDIS the Doctor had gifted to try to cheer her up. She still couldn't let go that one of her best friends had been alive, living his life one moment and suddenly had died in the next. What made matters worse was Rory wasn't just dead, he was wiped from existence and Hollie could somehow still remember him and yet his fiancée couldn't.
Ever since they lost Rory the Doctor decided to slow down on the dangerous adventures and focused on spending his time trying to cheer the blonde up and distract her from the loss.
In the first week while Amy had been sleeping the Doctor with Cassiopeia's help surprised her one night by waking her up and taking her 7 billion years in the future to a tiny planet called Drecen with almost the entire planet's surface covered in water. The Doctor somehow entrusted Cassiopeia with the TARDIS while he and Hollie explored.
Hollie looked in amazement at the beautiful village they had visited while on the planet, her eyes widening at the small huts floating on the water, somehow magically staying in the same spot as they moved over the waves. The Doctor had explained to her that the planet suffered mass flooding over a million years ago and the people all began to work together to save the planet they loved. Eventually, the people, planets and technology evolved and they began to rebuild.
The adventure had been truly wonderful and dare Hollie say a little bit romantic with the Doctor oddly being more touchy with the blonde than usual and had rarely let go of her hand without even realising he had been doing it. He only noticed himself when they sat on the deck of one of the village huts, their feet hanging off the edge and in the water. The Doctor had suggested they took a moment to watch the sky as it shifted in hue from purple signifying the night to a bright shining orange for day. They sat in silence watching it together and the Doctor took Hollie's hand for a moment, entwining their fingers as if it was habit before he suddenly realised what he had done and a bright blush almost as light as the sky completely covered his face as he took his hand away from her and pretended nothing of the sort had happened.
Not long after that adventure small adventure, the Doctor took Hollie, Cassiopeia and Amy to the Trojan Gardens as he had initially promised before they found themselves on Arcadia, the planet the Doctor had informed them was located in the Damascene Cluster.
Hollie now found herself walking through the Mussée D'Orsay in Paris, walking towards the Vincent Van Gogh exhibit.
"Thanks for bringing me." Amy looked at the Doctor as she walked into the exhibit, nowhere near as ecstatic as Hollie was on the inside.
"You're welcome." The Time Lord replied, sharing a glance at Hollie for a moment.
Cassiopeia looked between the two with a raised eyebrow before she looked at Amy who spoke again:
"You're being so nice to me. Why are you being so nice to me?"
"I'm always nice to you." He dismissed. "And this trip isn't just for you." He smiled before turning to the girl next to him. "Hollie told me Vincent was her favourite painter and who am I to deny her wish?" He shrugged before quickly kissing the blonde cheek, extremely close to her mouth.
Hollie froze a blush spreading on her cheeks as Amy shook her head and pulled the Doctors attention away from her as she shook her head.
"Not like this. These places you're taking us. The Trojan Gardens, Arcadia, now this. I think it's suspicious." She frowned and Cassiopeia watched the other blonde with a tilted head in wonder. "Hollie?" Amy added.
Hollie blinked looking blankly at Amy after frowning and being very deep in thought after the Doctor had kissed her. "Huh?" She forced a smile as the Doctor watched her closely. "I don't think anything's wrong."
"What?" The Doctor huffed at Amy, eyeing Hollie closely a moment later before he added: "It's not. There's nothing to be suspicious about."
"Okay, I was joking." Amy frowned. "Why aren't you?"
"Way to go, Doctor," Hollie told him after she patted his shoulder in sympathy, leaving her arm there for a moment.
Cassiopeia hummed bringing their attention back as a man who worked at the museum spoke to a group nearby.
"Each of these pictures now is worth tens of millions of pounds, yet in his lifetime he was a commercial disaster. Sold only one painting, and that to the sister of a friend. We have here possibly the greatest artist of all time, but when he died you could sold his entire body of work and got about enough money to buy a sofa and a couple of chairs. If you follow me now..." His voice died down as the four stepped back slightly while two children ran past the group and behind them, towards a painting on the wall.
"Who is it?"
"It's the doctor." The Time Lord turned around, looking at them before frowning slightly and realising they weren't talking to him.
Hollie giggled slightly at the look on the Doctors face as the other child replied: "He was the doctor who took care of Van Gogh when he started to go mad."
"I knew that."
Amy looked at the exhibition guide in her hands as she flicked through the pages before stopping at the painting of the Church at Auvers, "look. There it is. " she held the guide up slightly and compared the photo of the painting and the real one. "The actual one."
"Yes." The Doctor nodded as Hollie's eyes lit up at the sight of the masterpiece. The Doctor grinned as he held a hand up and pretended to paint in the air, grinning at Hollie as he did so. "You can almost feel his hand painting it right in front of you, carving the colours into shapes."
"Wait." Cassiopeia frowned, stepping closer to the painting, her eyes narrowing at it.
The trio beside her frowned with puzzled looks on their faces.
"What?"
The Doctor blinked spotting what the girl noticed. "Well, just look at that." He raised a brow as he too stepped closer to the artwork.
"What?" Amy asked.
"Something very not good indeed." He replied.
"Is that-" Hollie frowned as her eyes found what was wrong with the art.
"Yep." Cassiopeia nodded, turning back from the girl to the painting, her eyes landing on what looked like a scaled bird or dragon creature looking out of one of the windows of the church. Amy frowned, looking at her friends. "What things very not good?"
Cassiopeia pointed at the painting. "Look there, in the window of the church."
Amy frowned. "Is that a face?
"Yes." The Doctor nodded. "And not a nice face at all. I know evil when I see it and I see it in that window." The Doctor spun around in the next moment, Hollie, Amy and Cassiopeia following him as he walked over to the man talking about Vincent Van Gogh in the exhibit.
"Excuse me." The Doctor cut into his explanation about one of the paintings. "If I can just interrupt for one second." He looked at the group before pulling out his psychic paper. "Sorry, everyone. Routine inspection, Ministry of Art and Artiness. So, er..." He trailed off as the man replied:
"Doctor Black."
"Yes, that's right." The Time Lord nodded. "Do you know when that picture of the church was painted?
"Ah, well, ah, well, what an interesting question. Most people imagine-"
"I'm going to have to hurry you. When was it?"
"Exactly?"
"As precise as possible," Cassiopeia added with a smile.
"Without a long speech, if poss." The Doctor cut in. "We're in a hurry."
"Well, in that case, probably somewhere between the first and third of June." He replied.
"What year?"
"1890. Less than a year before," he paused for a brief moment, "before he killed himself." Hollie swallowed hard at Doctor Blacks words as the Doctor nodded.
"Thank you, sir. Very helpful indeed." He pointed at the man's neck, a familiar-looking item hanging around it. "Nice bow-tie. Bow-ties are cool.'
"Yours is very-"
"Oh, thank you." He nodded, patting the man on the shoulder. "Keep telling them stuff.' He turned away and looked at Cassiopeia and his companions.
"We need to go."
"What about the other pictures?" Amy frowned.
"Art can wait. This is life and death." He replied, pulling Amy's arm as Hollie and Cassiopeia walked with him. "We need to talk to Vincent Van Gogh."
"Wait." Hollie's eyes widened at what he had said. "We're seeing Vincent Van Gogh?"
The Doctor grinned widely, the four heading towards the exit of the Van Gogh exhibition.

The moon shone bright in the night sky as the Doctor, Hollie, Amy and Cassiopeia walked out of the TARDIS in an alleyway in 1890. "Right, so, here's the plan." The four began walking, the Doctor leading the way. "We find Vincent and he leads us straight to the church and our nasty friend."
"Sounds easy enough." Hollie shrugged.
"It sounds it." Cassiopeia chuckled slightly.
"What do you mean by that?" Amy frowned.
"I suspect nothing will be easy with Mister Van Gogh." The Doctor cut in, and Cassiopeia nodded in agreement. "Now, he'll probably be in the local cafe. Sort of orangey light, chairs and tables outside." The Doctor explained.
Amy flipped through her exhibition guide before finding a painting that looked like a cafe. "Like this?"
The Doctor nodded. "That's the one."
Hollie's jaw almost dropped to the ground as she looked up from the painting of the cafe to the actual cafe just at the end of the alleyway, the painting almost captured the real cafe perfectly.
"Or perhaps like that." Cassiopeia hummed. The Doctor looked from the painting to the cafe. "Yeah, exactly like that." He walked up to a man who looked like he worked at the cafe with the smart black clothing he wore. "Good evening. Does the name Vincent Van Gogh ring a bell?"
He groaned. "Don't mention that man to me." He then turned and walked back into the cafe.
Hollie frowned as the Doctor turned to one of the waitresses. "Excuse me. Do you know Vincent Van Gogh?"
"Unfortunately." She replied.
"Unfortunately?" Amy repeated.
"He's drunk, he's mad and he never pays his bills."
"But he is a good painter." Hollie tried to encourage her.
She winced as the waitress began to laugh as another waitress who had heard the conversation laughed along as well. "Come on!" A male voice called out from inside the cafe, the voice getting louder as it got closer. "Come on! One painting for one drink." The man was led outside by the waiter from before. Hollie's eyes widened as Amy stared at the man with her friend. "That's not a bad deal."
"It wouldn't be a bad deal if the painting were any good." The waiter replied. "I can't hang that up on my walls. It'd scare the customers half to death. It's bad enough having you in here in person, let alone looming over the customers day and night in a stupid hat. You pay money or you get out."
"I'll pay, if you like." The Doctor shrugged as Hollie mouthed at the Doctor with wide eyes: 'Is that the Vincent Van Gogh!'
"What?" The man turned to the Time Lord.
"Well, if you like, I'll pay for the drink. Or I'll pay for the painting and you can use the money to pay for the drink."
"Exactly who are you?" Vincent spoke up.
"Oh," The Doctor quickly thought of a reply as he sat down on a chair, "I'm new in town."
"Well, in that case, you don't know three things. One, I pay for my own drinks, thank you." The employees of the cafe began to laugh. Vincent narrowed his eyes slightly before continuing. "Two, no one ever buys any of my paintings or they would be laughed out of town. So if you want to stay in town, I suggest you keep your cash to yourself. And three, your friends are cute," he glanced to Amy, Hollie and Cassiopeia, "but you should keep your big nose out of other people's business." He then turned back to the waiter. "Come on," Vincent begged one more time, "just one more drink. I'll pay tomorrow."
"No."
"Or, on the other hand, slightly more compassionately, yes?"
"Or, on the other hand, to protect my business from madmen, no." The waiter shot back.
"What's wrong with madmen?" Cassiopeia questioned.
"Or?" Vincent raised a brow as they ignored the blonde woman.
"Oh look, just shut up, the pair of you." Amy cut in, looking between the two men. "I would like a bottle of wine, please, which I will then share with whomever I choose." She glanced at Vincent.
"That could be good," Vincent replied.
"Holls." Amy looked at her friend.
"Wine could be good." She nodded. "Maybe just a water for the Doctor though, I've seen him and wine." She giggled remembering back to Drecan and the homegrown wine they had been encouraged to try. The Doctor took one mouthful before spitting it into the sea.
The Doctor huffed at her as he whined: "I told you to keep that a secret!"
"Not my fault you asked if I wanted to share the bottle with you." She shrugged.
Amy looked between them slightly confused as Cassiopeia added with a small chuckle pulling the gingers attention away from them:
"I'll have just a glass of wine please."
The waiter nodded before giving Vincent his self-portrait with the straw hat back before going back inside the cafe.
Amy followed the man inside with Vincent following her.
"I can't believe that's him," Hollie whispered to the Doctor as she caught up with him and excitedly grabbed onto his arm, the pair walked inside the cafe, Cassiopeia following behind.
"And they don't know how successful he will be," Cassiopeia added following the Doctor and Hollie to the table Amy and Vincent were already sitting at, the wine already on the table.
"That accent of yours." Vincent looked at Amy, leaning forward slightly. "You from Holland like me?"
"Yes." The Doctor replied as Amy also replied:
"No."
"She means yes." The Doctor added shooting Amy a look. "So, start again. Hello, I'm the Doctor-"
"I knew it!" Vincent cut off the Time Lord who gave a puzzled look.
Cassiopeia frowned. "Sorry?"
"My brother's always sending doctors, but you won't be able to help."
"He's not that kind of Doctor." Cassiopeia explained. Hollie nodded in agreement as she looked down at the painting in Vincents hands.
"Amazing." She murmured, eyes locked on it.
"Amazing?" Vincent repeated making her blink up at him. "Then you can't have seen many paintings, I know it's terrible. It's the best I can do." He looked to Amy and then frowned. "Your hair's orange."
"Yes." Amy nodded. "So's yours."
Hollie leaned towards the Doctor as she looked between her friend and the painter. "The way they're looking at each other..."
"Yeah." He telepathically agreed slightly startling her again for a moment, the telepathic communication with him was still something she was very much getting used to even after a few weeks of using it. "I know what you mean." She replied. The Doctor softly smiled at her, she was getting much better at it since she first discovered her ability.
"Yes," Vincent replied with a slow nod. "It was more orange, but now is, of course... less."
The Doctor let out a loud sigh and Cassiopeia chuckled at the Time Lord's dramatics. "So. Er, Vincent, painted any churches recently?" The Doctor questioned. "Any churchy plans? Are churches, chapels, religiousy stuff like that, something you'd like to get into? You know, fairly soon?"
"Very subtle," Cassiopeia whispered to the Time Lord with an eye roll.
"Well,' He frowned in thought for a moment, "there is one church I'm thinking of painting when the weather is right.'
"That is very good news." The Doctor replied. An old woman suddenly burst into the cafe causing the Doctor, Hollie, Amy, Cassiopeia and Vincent to turn around and look at her. The woman was waving her hands around while screaming and shouting: "She's been murdered! Help me!"
"That," The Doctor pointed to the women, "on the other hand, isn't quite such good news." He jumped up, Hollie and Cassiopeia a second behind him. "Come on, Amy, Vincent!" He shouted, running out of the cafe.
"She's been ripped to shreds!" Another woman cried. The Doctor tried to peer around the crowd of people all crouched around the body of a young girl.
"Please, let me look." The Doctor tried to get through. "I'm a doctor."
"Who is it?" Another voice called.
"Oh no, no, no." The Doctor swallowed hard, his eyes meeting Hollie's for a moment, the Time Lord quickly shook his head. They were too late.
"Away, all of you vultures." The older woman screamed as she ran over. "This is my daughter. Giselle. What monster could have done this?" She pushed the Doctor away. "Get away from her!"
The Doctor stepped back beside Hollie who quickly helped him gain his balance. Cassiopeia looked to the Time Lord not sure exactly how to best help the situation. The mother of the girl spotted Vincent in the crowd and pointed at him. "Get that madman out of here!" She screamed. A moment later stones and pebbles were being thrown at the group's way. "You bring this on us. Your madness! You!"
The Doctor shielded himself and Hollie with his back as he swiftly stepped behind her and guided her away from the line of fire while Cassiopeia, Vincent and Amy shielded themselves with their backs as the stones were thrown.
"He's to blame!" Another person shouted as the group ducked into another alley, dodging stones in the process. The Doctor placed a hand on Hollie's shoulders. "You okay?"
"Yeah." She simply replied through her pants for breath.
The Doctor nodded and kissed the side of her head making her blink slightly before he looked to Cassiopeia, Amy and Vincent. "You alright?"
"Yes, I'm used to it," Vincent replied.
Cassiopeia frowned. "Has this happened before?" She asked. "Random murders?"
"Only a week ago. It's a terrible time."
The Doctor nodded. "You're thinking the same thing I am." He looked at Cassiopeia before looking at Vincent. "Come on, we'd better get you home."
"Where are you staying tonight?" Vincent questioned.
The Doctor patted his shoulder. "Oh, you're very kind."
Cassiopeia chuckled along with Hollie as Amy blinked, the four of them following Vincent through the alley.
×××
"Dark night." The Doctor hummed, looking up a the sky while walking up to a small house surrounded by fields that was owned by Vincent Van Gogh. "Very starry."
"It's not much." He shrugged. "I live on my own. But you should be okay for one night." He turned back to them and pointed. "One night."
"We're going to stay with him?" Amy quietly whispered to the Doctor.
"Until he paints that church." The Doctor answered.
"Watch out," Vincent told them, walking towards the door and opening it as he nodded at a painting hung up outside. "That one's wet."
"What?" Amy frowned as Hollie's eyes found the Bedroom of Arles beside the door.
"That's amazing." Hollie breathed as she dragged her eyes away from the painting.
"Sorry about all the clutter." He apologised as he lit a candle.
"Some clutter." The Doctor muttered.
"I've come to accept the only person who's going to love my paintings is me."
Hollie shook her head in amazement as she and Amy looked around the room at all the paintings scattered about, it was a mess but it was a very beautiful mess to Hollie.
"Wow." Amy breathed. "I mean, really. Wow."
"Yeah, I know it's a mess. I'll have a proper clear-out. I must, I really must."
"Coffee, anyone?" He held a pot of coffee up.
"Not for me, actually." The Doctor shook his head.
Hollie's gasp was similar to the sound of a dying cat as Vincent set the pot of coffee down on a still-life painting. Vincent looked at her after the noise she made. "You know," The Doctor began slowly, glancing at the horrified look on Hollie's face as his own looked slightly worried for her, "you should be careful with these. They're precious."
"Precious to me." He frowned at Hollie, her hands covering her mouth in shock at the sound that had left her. "Is she okay?"
"I draw and paint," Hollie replied lowering her hands as her eyes refused to leave the mark left on the painting. "The way you so carelessly just ruined art..."
Vincent laughed aloud. "It's not art, it's terrible. Not precious to anyone but me."
"They're all precious to us." Amy cut in.
"Well, you're very kind." He nodded. "And kindness is most welcome."
"Right," The Doctor clapped his hands together, "so, this church, then. Near here, is it?"
"What is it with you and the church?"
"Yes, Doctor." Cassiopeia glanced over towards him. "Why are you so interested in the church?"
The Time Lord narrowed his eyes at the blonde. "Oh, just casually interested in it," he turned to Vincent smiling, "you know."
"Far from casual." He frowned. "It seems to me you never talk about anything else. He's a strange one."
"Okay, so, let's talk about you, then." The Doctor changed the subject as Amy went outside with Cassiopeia to look at the painting by the door. "What are you interested in?"
"Well, look around." He waved his hands about. "Art. It seems to me there's so much more to the world than the average eye is allowed to see. I believe, if you look hard, there are more wonders in this universe than you could ever have dreamed of."
"You don't have to tell me." The Doctor remarked.
"It's colour. Colour that holds the key. I can hear the colours. Listen to them. Every time I step outside, I feel nature is shouting at me. Come on. Come and get me. Come on." He grabbed the Doctor by the shoulders. "Come on! Capture my mystery!"
The Doctor slowly removed Vincent's hands from his shoulders, his eyes wide in shock. "Maybe you've had enough coffee now." He patted his shoulder. "How about some nice calming tea? Let's get you a cup of chamomile or something, shall we? Amy." He frowned. "Where's Amy?"
As if on queue the sound of the ginger screaming mixed with the sound of Cassiopeia's shouting. "No, no, no!"
The Doctor, Hollie and Vincent ran out of the house, the Time Lord and Hollie ran straight over to Amy who was lying on the floor, Cassiopeia was crouched beside her. " What happened?"
"I don't know." She shook her head, breathing heavily as Hollie helped her friend up as Cassiopeia stood. "I didn't see it."
"We were having a look at the paintings out here when something hit her from behind," Cassiopeia explained.
"It's okay." The Doctor reassured. "He's gone now and we're here."
"No!" Vincent began to scream and shout, waving his arms around as he did so. "No!"
Hollie stepped back with Amy while the Doctor stepped towards Vincent with Cassiopeia. "Take it easy. Take it easy!" Vincent continued to back away from whatever he could see.
"What's happening?" Amy frowned, turning to Cassiopeia for a moment before looking back to the Doctor. "What's he doing?"
"I'm not sure." She frowned before her eyes widened as Vincent picked up a pitchfork and pointed it right at the Time Lord.
"Oh, dear." The Doctor muttered as Vincent charged at him.
The Doctor ducked out of the way of Vincent before turning back to him. "Run. Run!" The man shouted at the others.
"Yeah, yeah, yeah. That's not a bad idea. Amy, Hollie, Cass, stay back. He's having some kind of fit. I'll try to calm him down."
"I don't think he is Doctor," Cassiopeia replied, stepping forward with the Time Lord.
"Easy, Vincent," The Doctor slowly walked towards him. "Easy. Look. Look, look, look." He held his hands out. "It's me, it's me, it's me. It's the Doctor and Cassiopeia, look. No-one else is here. So, Vincent-"
"Look out!" Vincent shouted, Cassiopeia quickly ducked, not actually sure what she was ducking at a moment before the Doctor suddenly got launched into the air.
"Did you see anything?" Hollie frowned, concern all over her face.
"No, we can't see anything. What is it?" Amy asked.
"That is a good question." The Doctor replied before grabbing a long pole. "Let me help you."
"You can see him, too?" Vincent asked, using the pitchfork to stab at the air again.
"Yes. Ish."
"Liar," Cassiopeia shot at the Doctor a moment before he was launched into the air again, falling to the ground with a loud thud.
"Doctor!" Hollie shouted, running over to him, being careful to not go anywhere near Vincent and whatever he was fighting as she crouched down, worry filling her face.
"You couldn't see him?" Vincent questioned as the Doctor stood up, shooting Hollie an annoyed look for putting herself in unnecessary danger before he had the pole in hand again. "No." He replied, swinging the pole widely, Hollie yelped as the Doctor swung too far, nearly hitting her.
"Careful!" She snapped.
"Get back!" He shouted, continuing to swing by the wall as Vincent suddenly plunged his pitchfork into an invisible creature, the pitchfork suddenly moved away by itself, still stuck in whatever Vincent attacked as it suddenly fled. "No. Oi!"
Hollie giggled as the Doctor was still fighting absolutely nothing. Cassiopeia shook her head before walking up to the Time Lord and setting a hand on his shoulder, making him spin around and go to attack her before stopping, seeing her standing there, Hollie behind her giggling away. "He's gone, Doctor."
"Oh, right." He coughed. "Yes. Of course."
"Very nice Doctor." Hollie snickered as the Time Lord huffed:
"Shut up." His eyes narrowed at her playfully as she stuck her tongue out at him.
