CHAPTER 30
Julian
THE UNKNOWN
━━━━ 🌼 ━━━━
IT’S BEEN TWO WEEKS SINCE I’VE SEEN ANNIE. I guess it’s because the doctors have been trying to do everything they can to find the proper treatment to help her. Sometimes I’d see her in the halls and I would wave to her but she’d never wave back let alone smile at me. She would just simply turn her head and go the other way. It was strange, this wasn’t the Annie I knew, this wasn’t my Annie. In the weeks that followed, I finally got to see Annie, hopefully I would be able to talk to her. As I was making my way past the children’s play area, I spotted Annie sitting in a big red chair, her legs are up and against her chest, her left arm is hanging off the armrest while the other is lying in between her legs and chest, playing with the necklace I gave her.
Her hair is pulled in a ponytail with a few strands hanging out, her skin looks paler than normal but I guess that’s the medication she is receiving, it literally sucks the life of you, I would know. She is wearing a pink sweater, a white and black striped shirt, and grey sweatpants. The light in the play area shines off her face yet it remains emotionless.
Carefully, I open the door, I slowly walk over to her making sure I don’t startle her. Finally, I can see her but it’s like she doesn’t see me even though I’m right in front of her.
“Annie?” I ask, barely in a whisper. She still doesn’t say anything.
“Annie, please talk to me.” I beg. Finally she looks at me but instead of telling me, she gets up and is about to walk out the door. What is wrong with her?
Just as she’s about to walk out the door, I grab her wrist and spin her around to face me. Something must have snapped because she yanks my hand off her wrist.
“What’s the matter Annie?! Talk to me!” I beg, my voice rising.
“Just leave me alone Julian. it’s for the best.” She says. I’m confused.
“No, I’m not going to leave you. I’m going to stand right here until you tell me what’s going on.” I say, crossing my arms over my chest. “Okay, wanna know the real reason why I’ve been avoiding you?!” I don’t say anything and just nod my head. Annie hesitates for a minute, takes a deep breath and finally says, “My parents told me I can’t hang around you anymore. They think you're a bad influence and that you're the reason why my treatments aren’t working.” She looks down to the floor. I can’t believe this. “What did you say?” I ask. “Well I tried defending you but my parents didn’t care.” “Exactly what I thought.” I scoff, rolling my eyes and shaking my head. “You always do what your parents say, what happened to living your life Annie? Huh?!” I ask, my voice raising. “Well at least I’m living my life or was trying to, all you did was rebel and refuse to get better!” She says. “Really?! You believe that taking your treatments 24/7 was living?!” I ask, throwing my hands up in the air in frustration. “You're right. It wasn’t living and you wanna know something else?! I never did you love and I wish I had never met you because all you’ve done was just make my life worse!”
After she says that I just stand there, numb. Without another word from me, I just nod and walk away. Before I can leave the room, I turn around to see Annie in tears, I turn back around and leave the room.
