CHAPTER 19
Annie
SOUVENIRS

WE GET BACK TO THE HOUSE LATE. I quickly change into my pajamas and sit on top of the bed. “Okay, so you can stay here in the bed with me tonight but absolutely no touching. Okay?” I say.
“That's too bad Annie Grace, I actually enjoyed sleeping on the couch.” He says and smiles.
We laid there on our sides facing each other looking into each other's eyes, my hand on the pillow and Julian’s hand resting on top of mine.
“I don’t sleep. My mind has the scary capability of being dark and demented.” I whisper fear filling in my eyes. Julian places his hand on my cheek and caresses it softly with his thumb.
“You're afraid of your dreams?” He whispers back.
“Yes.” I whisper, quietly. “You can sleep, I'll still be here when you wake up.” He whispers back and smiles. I place my hand on top of his and close my eyes.
The next morning, I awake to find that me and Julian are cuddling together, my arm is resting across Julian’s chest and my head is laying firmly against his shoulder. My eyes flutter open and glance up at Julian, his eyes still closed and his face has a blank expression. But overall perfection. I look at him for a few seconds until Julian breathes in deeply and exhales as he opens his eyes, at that moment I realize that we're cuddling. “Oh, I'm sorry.” I say and remove my arm and roll over on my side of the bed. We both sit up slowly and Julian fixes his hair a bit before talking. “So where do you want to go today?” He asks and looks at me. I stretch my arms before answering, “I'm not sure, what did you have in mind?” “Well there is one place I want to take you.”
“Where?” I ask, worry in my voice. Julian turns to me with a smirk on his face.
“Now if I told you what it was it wouldn't be a surprise now would it?” He asks.
I look at him and roll my eyes playfully, “I guess not.” I throw the duvet covers off my lower half of my body and slide the door to the bathroom open, leaving Julian in the bed. I flick the light on and immediately, my head starts to hurt, but I ignore it. I tie my hair in a ponytail before brushing my teeth. I spit out the remaining toothpaste in my mouth into the sink before rinsing and wiping my mouth on the towel and hanging it back up on the towel rack.
“So you’re really not going to tell me where we're going?” I ask, walking back into the bedroom to see Julian, still laying in the bed but his legs are up and he’s playing with the skin around his nails, he turns in my direction and grin, that annoyingly cute grin. “Nope.” He says. I sigh and I start to climb back onto the bed, but stop when the room sways a little. I try again and another wave of vertigo unbalanced me. I turn and sit, facing away from Julian. My chest squeezes so painfully in my chest that it takes my breath away. Julian’s immediately at my side. “Annie, what is it? What’s wrong?” “I’m lightheaded.” I say. “And my stomach-”
“Do we need to go to the hospital?” he asks. Then, my stomach growls loudly. I look up at Julian, “No, I think I’m just hungry.” I say, Julian sighs. Julian starts laughing and collapses backward on the bed. “I’ve been so worried that something was gonna happen,” He presses the palms of his hands to his eyes. Julian then sits up and then throws the covers off his torso and stands up, revealing his black sports shorts that he slept in. Julian fixes the sleeves on his long-sleeved white shirt. “Come on Annie Grace, let’s get you something to eat.” He smiles.

I felt much after we ate. Julian made us each an omelet, it was very unique and delicious. I wonder where he learned how to cook like that. We leave the house and drive into town where Julian takes me to a souvenir/marketplace. We walk inside and I see billions of racks of clothes and such. “Julian, what are we doing here?” I ask lifting my black sunglasses up on top of my head, looking him right in the eyes.
"To buy souvenirs of course, hope you brought a list of people you're planning to buy souvenirs for." "Of course, what kind of girl do you think I am?" I ask jokingly, starting my search through the market. "Who are you buying souvenirs for anyway?" Julian turns to me.
"Wally, Winnie, Mom and Dad, and Kim. Who are you buying souvenirs for?" I ask.
"My parents, my sister, my brother, Liam, Trina and you.”
“Aww, Julian, you don’t have to get anything for me.”
“Why would I not?” Is all he says.
Julian comes up behind me and wraps his arm around my waist. I stand in front of a wall of calendars featuring shirtless surfers.
“I’m jealous.” He murmurs in my ear, and I laugh and rub my hand over his forearm.
“Don’t be.” I reach for one of the calendars. “You’re not really-” Julian says, baffled. “For Kim.” I answer, “Sure, sure Annie.” Julian laughs.
Julian and I looked around the store and market for a while, so far I've found a Hawaiian necklace for my mom, a Hawaiian shirt for my dad, and Hawaiian leis for Wally and Winnie to share. I stood over near the music section looking for Hawaiian music for Kim when I heard my name being called, I turned around to see Julian in a pink sun hat.
I can't help but laugh because he looked so cute but stupid at the same time. "What do you think? My color or no?" He asks while pretending to flip his hair to the side. "You look like my grandmother at the beach." I say laughing while taking the hat off and hanging it back up on the hat rack. "I'll take that as a complaint Annie Grace." He says grinning from ear to ear and I laugh.
“Here, for you.” Julian says, holding up a flower necklace. The charm was a beautiful blue color with a giant flower in the middle with tiny little flowers surrounding it.
“Thank you, Julian. It’s very beautiful.” I say and put the necklace on me. "Are you ready to go?" I ask turning towards him. "Yep."
"You have everything you need to get?"
"Yes."
"You sure?"
"Yes Annie, now can we go? You sound like my mum."
"Yes, I'm sorry." I laugh. I look over Julian’s shoulder and see a rack of swimsuits. Maybe I could get one. I thought to myself.
I’m in the bathroom, looking at my actual body and the body in the mirror, examining myself in the bathing suit. The suit is a two-piece aqua green with spaghetti straps that hugged my curves, very closely. It’s possible for someone in this universe, meaning they aren’t dying of a lung disease like me, to believe I am a normal girl wearing this very showy swimsuit, in Maui, with a guy she may have feelings for. I twist a little to the side to get a better look at myself, it's not that bad. I start to think about what I would see in this mirror, if I was normal. Would I think I was too skinny? Would I think I was too fat? Would I think I wasn’t pretty enough?
All the possible insecurities fill my brain and I start to think about what Julian would say. A knock interrupts me and my thoughts, “Annie? Are you alright in there? Because you’ve been in there for an eternity.” Julian calls from outside. I do eventually have to leave this bathroom, but I’m too nervous. I conjure all the strength in me and I pull the door open quickly, like a band-aid, I thought. Julian looks in my direction and his eyes travel slowly from my face to my legs and back up again.
“Annie Grace, you take my breath away.” I look up into his eyes and what I see there makes me more nervous than when I was in the bathroom. My heart picks up the pace and I take a deep breath to try to slow it down.
He runs his hands along the length of my arms, slowly pulling me toward him at the same time. He places his forehead on my when we’re finally close enough. His eyes are a burning fire, ready to implode.
“Annie.” His voice is soft and gentle.
“Yes.” My voice shakes only slightly.
“That swimsuit… is small.” He concludes.

After we left the souvenir/market, we put all our bags in the truck before we went to the beach again. This time to teach Julian how to surf. The entire time, Julian kept flipping off his board and when he attempted to stand, he'd just fall in the water. It really was cute how he at least tried even though he failed miserably. We then went sightseeing around Hawaii and then just drove around. Once in a while, I would glance at Julian who would glance back, I was so in the moment just looking out my window, embracing everything when I suddenly felt Julian's hand on top of mine.
It caught me off guard but I didn't really pay much attention to it.
