Chapter 25

"Where's Hilda!?" Zarinna asked in panic yet again,

"I don't think she's inside the building," Gina scattered his gaze, frantic as she urged Zarinna to move. "Let's get out of here! Maybe she's outside!"

A scream escaped Zarinna's lips as a pole from the side of the church crashed downed before her, catching her off guard as now the fire was only a few steps away from them.

"Let's go!" David beckoned, walking out of the Church kitchen, "She's not there, maybe she's already out."

With this he pulled Zarinna by the arm, leading her through the flames and to the door. The view of people met Zarinna's gaze as they walked out, each a pail in their hand as they sought to kill the fire. She roamed the place frantically, her gaze desperate to see Hilda's form. She'd grown more anxious as she came to a halt, a tear now slipping off her eyes as she realized the young girl's absence.

"Manang!!!" She heard a scream from inside the building, urging her to approach. Her gaze widened as she saw Hilda's face, calling through a window in fear. "Manang!"

"Hilda!" She rushed to the side to the wall, recognizing the church's bathroom as she peered in.

"Manang, help me!" The child cried, a pair of tears lining her cheeks wet as she spoke, Zarinna felt her heart break, the panic intensifying as she saw the fire behind the young girl inside the building.

"H-hold on!" She stepped away in panic, "Hold on, Hilda, I'm coming for you!" With this Zarinna rushed towards the Church's door, immediately feeling the heat beneath her feet as she took the first step.

"Zarinna! No!" Gina screamed, but to no avail as the woman seemed to walk through the wall of fire before her.

Zarinna felt her body sting in pain, intense heat beneath her feet as she took each step. She probed the place with her gaze, whimpers escaping her lips as she sought out the bathroom's entrance.

"Hilda!?" She called out, "Hilda, can you hear me?"

"Manang!" Hope surged her heart as she heard the young girl's voice. "Manang, I'm here!"

"Okay! J-just hold on for a while," She pushed the door open, but her efforts failed as she felt a weight behind it, forbidding it any movement. She stepped back and with all her might charged towards the door, neglecting the pain it ensued through her flesh. The door wouldn't move, she kicked the door open, but no amount of strength would render her the ability to move it.

Another tear escaped her eye, dizzy as the smoke choked each breath she took. She struggled to keep her gaze focused, her eyes sore as she squinted through the heavy smoke.

"Oh Lord," She whimpered, wiping the tears from her eyes as Hilda's cries were heard from the other room, "Lord p-please, help me,"

"Zarinna!" Her gaze swung to the door as she heard a familiar voice.

"David!" She took in a breath, "Hilda," She pointed towards the door as David walked towards her, "Hilda is inside!"

"Step aside," He walked before her, studying the door. He stepped back and gathered momentum, and upon his contact with it, the wooden door crashed towards the inside of the bathroom.

"Hilda?"

The view of Hilda sprawled on the floor occupied her gaze, and immediately she rushed towards the child, gathering her in her arms as she stood.

"Zarinna let's go," David beckoned, and with this they excited for the door. Fire raged before them like a chasing nightmare, its consuming heat engulfing them as they walked. Zarinna walked in haste, her eyes narrowed longingly for the church's door, when instead as she was about to take another step a thick metal bar crashed before her, sending a wave of terror through spine.

"Zarinna!" She felt her arm pulled back, and in no time her back came in contact with the searing hot wall. She saw another bar fall, but this time right in front of her. She held the child tighter, shutting her eyes as she anticipated the pain. Zarinna felt the wall behind her vibrate, the bar banging against it as it fell.

Seconds ticked by, there was no pain. She opened her eyes, expectant to see the raging fire once more, but instead, eyes of almond met her gaze, his features a manifestation of agonizing pain. She glanced sideways, both his arms we're against the wall behind her.

Zarinna's gaze widened in realization, terrified as she saw blood stain David's shoulder, the large bar from the church's ceiling upon his back.

"David?" She whimpered, taking hold of his arm, "David are you-" Her heart came to a halt, helpless as she saw his eyes clasp shut. She felt his body stir, and it took only seconds before he collapsed before her.
