Halloween Dance
Three weeks have past since the training simulation issue and the twins new powers. Two weeks have past since everyone admitted to what they were feeling about the training simulation. After that this week has only been about Halloween.
All week the only thing Happy Harbor High School has talked about is the Halloween dance. Conner had asked Spook and Phantom asked Megan to be their dates. They invited the rest of the team, but Kaldur and Robin were unable to go. Artemis, Wally, and Zatanna agreed to go.
"I swear if any of you dressed as ghosts," Spook says, walking into the mission room with a blonde wig. Along with her is her brother in a pink wig. "I'm going to kill you."
Megan laughs. "Not me. I can't say for Artemis or Zatanna though."
"How's the wrapping coming, Conner?" Spook asks, coming to his side.
"Complicated," he answers.
"Let me help you with that," Spook says, grabbing the bandages and wrapping them around him. He gives her a grateful smile.
Suddenly Wally howls, as he's dressed up like a werewolf. "Really? You're not going to join in at all?" Wally asks the sleeping Wolf. "What kind of wolf are you?"
"Wally, stop torturing him," Conner huffs.
Spook finishes wrapping up Conner's head. "There, you're perfect. I mean you look perfect. I mean your head's wrapped perfectly in bandages. That sounds weird." She awkwardly laughs.
He chuckles. "What are you gonna be?" Conner asks her. "Don't tell me you're gonna be a blonde ghost."
Spook laughs. "No." She shapeshifts into a blue skirt with a matching top.
"And who are you supposed to be?" Conner asks.
"Whoa, babe, you can make me your celestial spirit any day," Wally comments, speeding up beside her.
"I see you're a Fairy Tail fan," Spook grins.
"That I am, Lucy. Man, I must be a celestial spirit because you've got the key to my heart."
"You finished?" Phantom scoffs.
"Are you a celestial wizard because you have stolen the stars and put them in your eyes," Wally says, turning to Phantom. "Now I'm done."
"I'm missing something," Conner says.
"I'm a character from a show called Fairy Tail named Lucy who's a celestial spirit mage," Spook explains. "And my fratello is going as Natsu, the fire dragon slayer."
Phantom transforms into Natsu's clothing at that very moment with a grin and fire dancing along his fingertips, spelling 'come on.' "I'm all fired up!"
"Wow, you look just like him!" Wally comments, looking from Spook to Phantom. "But aren't they a couple?"
"Everyone wishes they would be," Spook replies.
"Still kinda weird," Wally admits.
"It's not like we could be the Hitachiin twins," Spook says. "I'm not a guy I'm a girl."
"That didn't stop Haruhi," Wally retorts with a smile.
"True. So, you don't have any fire dragon slayer pickup lines?" Spook asks.
"I do, if it were a girl dressed as Natsu," Wally comments.
"Then give me one," Phantom says. "I'd love to hear it."
"Nope! It's weird!" Wally huffs before he turns to Megan. "So, you going as my favorite martian?"
"Not exactly," she comments, changing into a zombie. "Urgh!"
"Whoa, babe, eat my brains anytime," Wally comments, getting a smack in the back of the head by Phantom. "Ouch!"
"Great minds think alike," Captain Marvel says, walking into the room.
Spook and Phantom try to hide their giggles from the makeshift zombie face paint job he did.
"Captain, you... look terrific!" Megan lies, getting a proud smile from him in return. "Are you going to a Halloween celebration too?"
His face suddenly distorts. "Well, sure, I'm going with... Uh-uh, I mean, you did invite the whole team, right?"
"Pssffht!" Spook giggles, trying to hold back her giggles and earning a jab from Wally. "Poor Captain..."
"Yeah, we'll all be at the dance. So don't worry about us. Go. Have a good time at your party," Megan says, completely clueless.
"Recognized: Artemis, B09. Zatanna Zatara, A04."
They exit the tubes and immediately notice each other.
"Oh, hey, Zatanna. You look great," Artemis comments, dressed in a vampire costume.
"Oh, thanks," Zatanna replies in her witch outfit. "You too." They walk up to the others. "Oh, look. Zombie Captain Marvel. That's hilarious. Is the Justice League having a party? 'Cause my dad didn't mention it."
"No, no, no, no, see, I..." he sighs, giving up. "Fine, I'm going trick-or-treating." He flies out the zeta tube.
"Recognized: Captain Marvel, 15."
He crosses his arms. "And I'm not sharing my candy."
"Is he like secretly a child?" Spook asks, whispering to Conner.
Conner chuckles in response. "Now that you mention it."
"Come on, let's finish covering your arms in bandages," Spook says, grabbing the wraps and start wrapping them around his arms. "If you keep jerking your arms around, they're just going to fall off."
"I didn't think it was going to be this much work, that's why I agreed. You are so making this up to me later," he chuckles. "This was your idea in the first place."
From the corner of Spook's eye, she notices Artemis stomp off and Zatanna following behind her. They transform into their uniforms with one of Zatanna's spells and off they head toward the hangar.
"I guess they aren't coming with," Wally says, watching them go.
Spook finishes wrapping bandages all over Conner. "We ready to go?"
"How we getting there?" Wally asks.
"Ooh! Let's take the motorcycles!" Spook says.
They head to the hangar to see some gone, leaving two.
"Or not," Wally voices.
"I'll go with Conner on his bike," Spook suggests. "Megan and Phantom on another. You can have the last bike, Wally."
"Aww, man!"
Conner gets on his bike and Spook climbs on behind him. She tenses slightly as she moves to wrap her arms around Conner. She immediately feels as if she's groping his toned body and blushes, burying her face in his back as he takes off. Megan hops on behind Phantom, wrapping her arms around him. Wally grunts as he gets on the last bike. The path in front of them is opened as they speed out off toward the school. They arrive shortly after, parking their bikes at the side of the school.
"Too bad the rest of the team couldn't make it," Megan says, entering the gym full of students.
They take a look at all the dressed up students to find that every single one of them are dressed as heroes.
"You've gotta be kidding," Conner scoffs.
The group of four friends come rushing over to them.
"You look amazing!" Wendy exclaims, dressed as Black Canary.
"Who did your makeup, girl?" Karen asks Megan.
Mal walks up to Conner, looking at his costume up and down. "Burn victim?"
"Mummy, you?" Conner asks.
"Superman... done right," Mal says with a smirk.
"Yeah, good luck with that," Conner scoffs with a smile.
"Who are you supposed to be?" Karen asks, dressed as a bumblebee.
"Anime characters," Vanessa responds. "Show called Fairy Tail. I'm Lucy and he's Natsu."
"I'm sure you look just like them," Wendy smiles.
"Wally, this is Wendy, Karen, Mal, and..." Megan says, talking to Wally and gesturing to each person. She goes to gesture to Marvin, who's dressed as Batman, but sees he's preoccupied by texting on his phone.
"Ignore Marvin," Wendy says. "He thinks we're being invaded by martians."
"I never said that," Marvin huffs. "It's just, reports are all over the interwebs and I'm not the only one getting them." At that, everyone's phone begins to go off. "I mean, martians aren't invading. It's just a prank gone viral, right?"
"Of course it's a prank," Mr. Carr says, pouring a glass of fruit punch. "Ever hear of Martian Manhunter? Martians aren't hostile."
"Of course, not," Megan says with a worried smile.
They ignore it and go to have fun with a little dancing. A few minutes later the lights and the music go out. Complaints from students arise. The emergency lights come on and the room fills with red light.
"Everybody, calm down! Probably just a blown fuse," Mr. Carr says.
"Says here martians have taken over New Haven and Providence," Mal says, reading the message from his phone.
"Spotted in Happy Harbor too," Wendy reads.
"Guys, guys. It's a Halloween cliché," Mr. Carr says, trying his best to calm everyone down.
"Meaning it happens a lot?" Karen asks smugly.
Suddenly the loudspeaker beeps and a voice talks through it. "Attention, homeland security advises everyone to stay inside the gymnasium. This is not meant as confirmation of any alien invasion."
"I knew it. I knew it!" Karen declares, throwing a hand up indignantly. "I told you. I told you."
"Alright, come on," Wendy says.
"Bring them on, bring them on," Mal says. The three of them walk away.
'We should call the cave,' Megan telepathically links us.
'Wait,' Conner says, holding up a hand. He walks away from us to look at something.
"For your own safety, remain inside."
Conner turns around with a smirk on his face. He tells them of the plan, knowing it's to prank Marvin. After a while, Marvin is on patrol outside the gym. The three of them hide as Wally and Phantom run from around the corner toward Marvin.
"The martians are coming! The martians are coming!" Wally and Rai shout in utter panic.
Conner appears behind Marvin. "Look out! They have disintegration rays!" Megan shapeshifts into a martian looking creature with a large flashlight and Spook creates fog with her ice powers. Marvin gasps and Megan lets out a roar. Conner grabs Marvin and shoves him behind him. "Run, Marvin. I'll hold it off."
Rai moves to attack the alien to get blasted by the 'disintegration beam' then disappears from sight, causing Marvin to scream.
Conner runs toward the shapeshifted martian and she lifts him into the air, with Conner crying out in shock. She slams him to the ground, then in a wall, causing it to crack around him. She finishes off by letting him skid to Marvin's feet. Marvin screams in fear, running back to the gym. They all crowd back together with giggles.
"Heheh, come on," Phantom says. "Let's go see his reaction."
"We do not wanna miss this," Conner says.
They enter into a separate door, getting back into their costumes.
"Before it was all a prank I pulled. Now it's definitely real!" Marvin shouts as they walk up next to him. "The martians just killed three guys."
"Which three guys?" Megan asks.
He points at Phantom, Conner, and Wally that walk up behind Megan and Spook. "Those three guys! Wait! I... uh... oh..."
"Marvin?" Wendy huffs, giving him a disappointed look along with everyone else.
"Trick or treat?" Marvin says with a shrug.
After about an hour of having fun, Artemis gets in contact with the team. They separate from the others into a secluded corner.
"What is it, Artemis?" Megan asks.
"Are Spook and Phantom with you?" she asks.
"We're here, what is it you need, archer?" Spook asks.
"While Zatanna and I were out tonight, we encountered a... a spirit. She helped us as much as she could. We were battling her older brother who killed her to become pure and be able to wield the Sword of Beowulf."
"Why didn't you contact us earlier?" Phantom asks, somewhat annoyed.
"We were kinda kidnapped and without comms," Zatanna says.
"We're coming back," Spook says. "And you're going to take us to her."
"Uh, sure," Artemis replies.
They return to say goodbye to Wendy, Marvin, Karen, and Mal before they return to the cave on the motorcycles.
"We're going to go change," Spook says, rushing off to her room with Phantom in tow. They rip off their wigs and transform into their ghosts halves. After transforming, they phase through walls all the way to the mission room to greet Artemis and Zatanna.
"Let's go," Phantom says.
"Follow us," Zatanna says, heading through the zeta-tube.
They eventually make it to the grave. The twins ghost sense goes off, a blue wisp flowing from Spook's mouth and red one from Phantom.
"Her name was Greta Hayes," Spook says. "Come on out, Greta. We want to help you."
Greta appears before the four, eyes slightly widening. "Secret," she whispers.
"You're so pretty," Spook inquires.
"Secret."
Spook gives Phantom a nod and they power up their ectobeams.
"What are you doing?!" Zatanna shouts.
"Something awesome," Spook replies with a wink, firing off her ectobeams to encase Greta. Phantom does the same. They complete their process and Greta is revealed to be unharmed but obviously different.
Greta looks over herself and looks back at the twins. "What did you do? Whoa! I-I didn't say secret! H-how did you?!"
"We made you a living ghost like us," Phantom says.
"Unless you want to pass on, we will let you," Spook says. "That is up to you."
"Are you crazy?" she huffs. "I love this! I-I'm alive."
"Well, not really, but you can do any normal thing a human could," Spook says. "Except, you don't sleep, eat, or need to use the bathroom for anything. Also that you're immortal and won't age."
"This is so cool!" she squeals and hugs the twins. "Thank you! Thank you!"
"You're welcome," Spook says, patting her back. "We will be your mentors to learn to control your new powers though."
"What just happened?" Artemis asks.
"We just got a new teammate," Spook says. "Meet, uh–"
"Secret," Greta says. "I'll go by Secret."
"I like it," Zatanna says with a grin.
"Now, how exactly are we going to tell the others?" Artemis asks.
"First lesson on learning to control your powers," Spook says. "Learning to overshadow someone. Phantom if you will do the honors."
Phantom phases into Artemis' body. "It's easy." He does a little dance before he exits her body.
"This is how we'll get her to the cave," Spook says, slowly flying away toward the nearest zeta-tube.
Greta does as shown and manages to take over Artemis.
"Are you sure about this?" Zatanna asks, following her. "Won't Batman be mad?"
"Probably," Spook shrugs. "But, Batman doesn't scare me, I'm a ghost for crying out loud. I'm supposed to do the scaring."
Phantom and Greta, still in Artemis' body, float behind Spook. They arrive at the zeta-tube and Zatanna walks in first.
"Recognized: Zatanna Zatara, A04." Next Greta walks in. "Artemis, B09. Phantom, B08. Spook, B07."
They disappear and reappear in the mission room, Greta immediately releasing Artemis.
"How did I get here?" Artemis says, holding her head. "Wait!" She whirls around to glare at the three ghosts. "Don't ever do that again!"
"Sorry, we had to choose somebody," Phantom says.
"Then choose yourself!" Artemis huffs, stomping back to the zeta-tube to head home.
"Recognized: Artemis, B09."
"I gotta go home too," Zatanna says. "Don't want my dad getting upset."
"Recognized: Zatanna Zatara, A04."
Megan and Conner come walking into the room. "So, how'd it go?"
"Who's that?" Conner asks.
"Conner, Megan, meet Greta Hayes aka Secret," Spook says. "She's our protégé."
"Wait, what?" Conner asks. "She has your powers?"
"She does now," Phantom says. "We gave her powers like ours."
"It's so nice to meet you," Megan says. "I'm M'gann M'orse but you can call me Megan Morse aka Miss Martian. I'm a martian, if that's not obvious. I'm Martian Manhunter's niece."
Conner sighs. "I'm Conner Kent aka Superboy. I'm the clone–"
"Son," Spook interrupts.
"–of Superman," Conner finishes.
"It's nice to meet you, I'm Greta Hayes as Spook introduced," Greta says. "I'll go by Secret if I need to."
"I wish we could talk longer, but it's late and I'm tired," Megan says, turning with a yawn. "Goodnight, everyone."
"Me too. Night," Conner says, following her.
"Goodnight!" Phantom says. They disappear down the hall.
"Well, you may not need to sleep but we do," Spook says. "I'm heading to bed."
"Question," Greta says. "Why do you two need to sleep if you're ghosts? I don't need to sleep."
"Umm," Phantom says, looking at Spook.
"Come with us," Spook says, heading to the bedrooms. They arrive in Spook's bedroom and the twins sigh. "This is something you can not tell anyone. If you do we will send you to the other side, forcefully."
Greta nods quickly, face turning more pale than before. "I promise I won't tell a soul."
Spook nods and transforms to her human self, earning a surprised gasp from Greta.
"Y-you-you're h-half–"
"Human, yes," Spook sighs.
"You look so d-different."
"Yes, we do," Spook says.
"We haven't told the others because we can't let them know who we really are. They won't accept us if they did," Phantom says. "My name is Raimundo when I'm not a ghost. Don't ever call me that though."
"My real name is Vanessa," she says. "Please let us tell the team when we are ready."
"I won't tell anyone if that's what my mentors prefer," Greta says. "I'm glad you gave me this second chance at life, so I owe what little I can give."
"We can go back to your place to get some of your belongings if you like tomorrow after school," Phantom says.
"That would be wonderful. You go to school?" Greta asks surprised.
"Yeah, Batman made us," the twins say.
"Ah, well, I'll go to let you sleep, goodnight," Greta says, phasing out the room.
Phantom nods. "I'll be heading to my room, goodnight, sorella."
"Goodnight, fratello."
