San Quentin State Prison
San Francisco
2015
"You like that? You like that?" A huge man named Peachy towers over Scott Lang who holds his now sore eye from where he was knocked. "Come get you some now."
Scott stays bent over for just another beat before he launches himself towards the dude. He wraps his arms around the guy's big abdomen only to be tossed away. The other prisoners surrounding them shoves Scott forward, Peachy pushes him back and then he hurriedly straightens among the sea of prisoners. With a punch, Scott throws a hard punch into Peachy's ribs which does nothing, given the fact how huge he is.
"God!" Scott winces, shaking out his wrist before looking up and shrugging at the man in disbelief. "You didn't even move."
The huge man just scrunches his nose, twitching his head into a shake. "Nah."
"Okay, what if I come in on the left side, right?" Scott says motioning down to Peachy's stomach. "Just down here. You see this right here?" Then he punches Peachy right across the face. The entire crowd makes a collective sound of 'oh'.
Scott keeps his pale fists up, being absolutely no match to Peachy standing before him. The other threatening man touches his lip wiping the blood away before he flashes a grin. "I'm gonna miss you, Scott."
"I'm gonna miss you, too, Peachy." Scott catches his fellow inmates hand, blowing out a chuckle, and shaking his head. "Man, you guys got the weirdest goodbye rituals."
"Alright." One of the prison guards steps in moving through the large prison crowd that has gathered around to witness the fight. "Break it up."
Next thing, Scott knows he is walking through the wire fences that are line with coiled razor wire, being escorted by two State Troopers. He passes a double line of orange jumpsuit criminals, casually walking out of the prison with only his new cut to his eyebrow and his backpack to his name. The prison gates buzz and swing open, and then Scott Lang walks out a free man. A prison bus pulls by and, when it's gone, Scott finds his best friend standing out there, waiting for him.
"Scotty!" Luis, being the coolest guy ever cheers as he throws his hands out and bends his knees. "What's up, Man?!"
Scott mimics his best friend's pose, throwing his own arms and leaning back before jogging over. "Dang! He-hey!" Just reaching for him, Scott calls out happily, "Ha-ha! Hey, Man!"
Luis grins before they clap hands and pull each other into a bro hug. Pulling away, Luis grins at Scott's face, "Hey, what's up with your eye?"
"Oh, well, what do you think?" He says as he scrunches his nose, jabbing his finger up to his eyebrow. "Peachy, it's a going-away present."
"Oh, yeah," Luis says, still always saying with a great smile before he points to his own face. "I still got my scar from a year ago." He says as he touches the other guy's eyebrow that twitches with demonstration, actually finding the white line. "Oh, yeah."
"Yeah, yeah."
As they walk around to get inside the crummy looking vehicle, Luis goes on proudly. "You know what? I'm still the only one who knocked him out."
"Welp, I definitely didn't." Scott says before climbing into the concerning looking van.
The two drive the vehicle down the curly curving highways leading back to San Francisco. The green and brown mountains slide up and down around them and a dark green forest is sprinkled out below. Some funky music plays on the radio as they cruise along.
"Thanks for picking me up, Brother." Scott says.
"Bro, you think I'm gonna miss my celly getting out?" Luis asked.
Scott glances over at Luis asking kindly. "Hey, how's your girl, Man?"
"Ah, she left me." Luis says as his smile hadn't left his face.
"Oh." Scott stretches the word out as his eyes squint. Maybe he shouldn't had brought up the girl then?
"Yeah, my ma died too." Luis says as he glances back and forth from the road and his bestie as Scott dips his chin. "And my dad got deported." Scott blinks at him with an open mouth. "But I got the van!" He exclaims happily pointing up to the ceiling.
Scott moves on, nodding and smiling around at the vehicle surrounding him. "It's nice."
"Yeah, right?!" Luis answers back excitedly.
"Thanks, for the hook-up too." Scott says looking around the scenery. "I needed a place to stay."
"You wait 'til you see this couch." Luis presses his fingers together in demonstration. "You're gonna be really happy."
"You're gonna be on your feet in no time." Luis says encouraging. "Watch."
"I hope so." Scott says with a hint of sadness as he looks out the car window.
"Yeah, and I gotta introduce you to some people. Some really skilled people." Luis says as he probably shouldn't had said that.
Scott curtly shakes his head. "Not interested."
"Yeah, right." Luis says as he grins.
"No, I'm serious, man. I'm not going back!" Scott says as Luis stares at him seriously surprised as this new change in behavior."
He shakes his head a little again. "I got two daughters to take care of, and hoping that Steph doesn't hate my guts."
"You know that jobs don't come easy for ex-con's right?" Luis asked.
"Look, Man. I got a Master's in Electronical Engineering, all right?" Scott says shrugging off his best friend's concern. "I'm gonna be fine." He says.
Yeah okay.
