꓅hat evening, Rey sat at the table with Ben, Finn and Poe as they ate. She didn't like the idea of marrying any one of them, but just in case she didn't win she wanted to get to know them before being forced to marry one of them.
"So I guess we're all tied for now," Finn said.
"For now," Ben answered. "Tomorrow things will be different."
"Aye, tomorrow you're not going to beat me," Rey answered.
"I don't have to beat you m'lady, I just have to win you," he replied.
She glared at him, she was tired of him and everyone else acting like she was some kind of prize to be won. "I'm not a prize or trophy," she snapped.
"I know," he answered. "But if you do beat me, I won't give up until I've won your heart."
"Good luck with that, I would never marry you if I had a choice."
Poe patted Ben on the back. "As my father always said there's nothing that can break a man's heart worse than a woman, but you won't have to worry about it because I'm going to be the one to win."
Rey groaned in annoyance, they were all just the same. All they cared about was winning this stupid contest, they didn't care about her interests or her personality, they only cared that she was beautiful and that she was royalty.
The three young men had bursted out into an argument over who was the best at the following events and Rey had had enough, she slammed her fist down on the table getting their attention. It was certainly not what her mother had taught her, but she was about to give all three of them a piece of her mind and now was not the time for silly ladylike manners.
The three young men turned to look at her curiously, their faces were quickly filled with concern as they saw how angry she seemed.
She took a deep breath to calm herself before she began. "Do any of you even care about being able to fall in love not just leaving who we will marry to fate?"
"Well, isn't it fate that brings us to the one we love?" Ben asked.
"Perhaps, but I believe that we can change our fates, I believe that we all have something greater."
"What?" Finn asked.
"A destiny," she answered.
Finn nodded thoughtfully.
"That's why I must win, I've found my destiny and I'm willing to fight for it," Ben said.
Finn and Poe exchanged disappointed glances that he'd come up with such a good line before they had a chance to do so.
Rey blushed slightly, but fought it back. "You think that I'm your destiny, but you don't even know me."
"I know enough," he answered.
She stood angrily. "Aye, that I'm a beautiful princess, that marrying me will give you wealth and power. You don't know what's on the inside."
Ben opened his mouth to reply that he didn't care about any of those things that he wanted marry her because he admired her spirit, that he liked her because she was adventurous and strong. That he admired the way she competed against them. But before he could she stormed out of the dinning hall.
Poe laughed. "That went well."
Ben glared at him.
"She's certainly difficult to impress," said Finn. "I'm beginning to think that if she wins she'll end up as an old maid."
"Which is why one of us has to win to save her from a life of solitude," said Poe. "Even though I'm beginning to feel sorry for the winner, she's certainly hard to handle."
"But that's why I like her, she has a strong spirit like my mother," said Ben. "She's not afraid to speak up for what she believes. She's unlike any other girl I've ever met, she's strong and free spirited, a girl who would share in my adventures not stay home doing needle crafts while she waits for my return."
"Aye," Finn agreed. "And she's fun too, she likes talking about archery and sword fighting not boring stuff like other girls."
Poe nodded. "I've got an idea, our fathers are having a bet, so why don't we have a bet of our own?"
"What kind of bet?" Finn asked.
"Who can win her heart first? Clearly she doesn't care who wins the contest, she may like sword fighting and archery, but she's still a girl, she still wants all of that mushy falling in love stuff too. She won't be happy, and neither will we unless she falls in love with one of us," said Poe.
"I don't know, I'm not sure if it's such a good idea," Finn replied. "What if she falls in love with one of us but then someone else wins, wouldn't that break her heart?"
Ben nodded.
"What if the prize for the winner of the bet is that they get to marry her? The other two could lose on purpose and make it look like we were trying." Poe suggested.
Finn and Ben both nodded.
"Okay but what if none of us win her heart?" Finn asked.
"Then we'll proceed as if nothing happened," Poe answered.
"That sounds good," Ben agreed.
