Mouutsu Mirai

"Pst, Saito..." a whisper penetrated the dark, quiet atmosphere within the room.

Inside the said room, where two young boys -- one awake, and the other asleep; one younger, with brown eyes and rather spiky brown hair; the other, looking slightly more mature, and had pretty long thick brown hair.

"Saitooo... psstt!" the younger one persisted, kneeling on the floor as he kept on poking the other's cheek.

"Netto..." Saito murmured, still half-asleep. "Go back to bed, whatever it is, it can wait till morning," he said, turning his back away from Netto.

The latter puffed up his cheeks in slight irritation, his stomach making that dying whale noise once again, which was just loud enough for his brother to hear, earning a soft chuckle out of him.

"Netto, we just ate dinner! How can you be so hungry already?" Saito asked bemused, sitting upright and looking at his younger twin.

Netto simply gave him a pouting look and pointed to the clock on their wall. Saito rubbed his eyes and let them adjust to the darkness, the clock read two o'clock in the morning, at which Saito became fully awake and stared straight at his brother with wide, bright green eyes.

"Netto, is there something wrong?" Saito asked with a very concerned and urgent tone. He knew very well that once his brother fell asleep, there was absolutely no way of waking him up so easily; not even mid-night hunger.

"W-Well, yeah, of course there's something wrong! My stomach is dying, what do you think!?" Netto exclaimed with a chuckle.

Saito laughed along at his brother's cute antic, but couldn't help shake off that feeling in his chest that there was still something... off.

He decided to just shake it off for now and tend to his brother's hunger, "Well, let's go and wake mom up then--"

"No!!" Netto suddenly exclaimed loudly, causing his older twin to raise a brow.

Netto noticed this, and quickly rationalized his strange behavior, "I-I mean... I don't wanna wake mom up... plus I just want some milk and cookies... y'know, with you," he said in a soft voice.

Saito gave him a sweet smile and jumped off his bed, messing up Netto's hair along the way, "Well, let's go then,"

"Yay!" Netto chirped as the two quietly open their door and make their way into the kitchen, careful to not making any loud noises that would wake their mother up.

When they had finally arrived in the kitchen area, Saito went straight to the counter, wasting no time in preparing their late-night snack. Netto, on the other hand, went over to their sofa and tried to make it as comfy as possible, running up and down the stairs, fetching the pillows and blankets from their beds and placing them on top of it.

As soon as Saito had finished up, he placed their snacks on a kitchen tray and went over to the living room where his younger sibling awaited, only to be surprised by the couch's new little layout.

"Tah-daa~!!" Netto exclaimed, spreading both arms upwards. The other couldn't help but giggle at his brother's little arrangement.

"Netto, what is all this?" Saito couldn't help but ask, tray still in hands.

"Whaat? I wanted to make our snack time as comfy as possible!!" Netto retorted with a fake pout.

Saito couldn't help but laugh again, "Alright, alright, what are we waiting for, then? Sit down so we can eat and drink before the milk gets too cold,"

"Hurray!" Netto cheered as he hurriedly jumped onto the rightmost corner of the pillow-and-blanket-clad sofa, hugging a pillow and digging his face into it.

"Woah, careful now," Saito warned in a gentle voice as he set down the plate of cookies onto the middle of the sofa whilst carefully handing over Netto's glass of warm milk. The latter chirps a thank you and takes it, drinking a nice, soothing sip that made him feel all warmed up inside.

By now, Saito had just come back from the kitchen area to return the tray back in the cupboards. He then walks over to the leftmost corner of the sofa and takes his seat, careful to not spill any of his warm milk. He takes a sip as well and immediately felt the warmth go down from his throat and onto his stomach.

"Mmm..." The two twins purred simultaneously, while at the same time laying back further onto the now fluffier sofa to get more comfortable.

The two remained silent for a while, drinking their milk while dipping the chocolate-chip cookies as tradition, and all-in-all, enjoying their late-night snack. Of course, Saito, being the good big brother that he usually is, had made sure that his younger brother would get more cookies than him. Without letting him know of course, as Netto would surely turn shy upon knowing and leave the remaining cookies on the plate and force Saito to eat them.

When there was nothing but small crumbs and two empty glasses left on the plate, Netto decided to finally break the silence.

"Uh... Saito...?" he said in a very soft voice, glancing down.

This immediately grabbed the other's attention, "What is it, Netto?"

Netto hesitated for a moment, tightly hugging a pillow to him, before finally speaking, "It's just... I'm sorry I woke you up so late and..." he paused, twiddling with his thumbs and still avoiding eye contact with his brother, "It's just, I kinda had this nightmare where I grew up as an only child and... well... you weren't there at all with me..." Those last words in Netto's statement were weak and cracked, and tears had began to form in the rim of his chocolate brown eyes.

But before his tears began to flow completely, a warm embrace prevented them from continuing so.

"Well geez, Netto, why didn't you tell me from the start? I would've given you more cookies had I known you had the bad case of nightmares!" Saito told him with a warm smile.

"Wait what!?" Netto exclaimed, then stood up and imitated a scolding pose and tone of voice. "You gave me more cookies than usual again!? Saito, you know how many times I've told you to divide our cookies equally!"

Saito just laughed and pulled his younger sibling towards the blanket and pillow pile and started tickling him. Netto fought back, only to have it turn into a melee pillow fight.

After some time, Mrs. Hikari came downstairs to check up on what was with all the ruckus that she kept on hearing for a while now, only to find an adorable, yet messy sight in her living room.

The two twins were laying back to back with each other on the floor, blanket and pillows sprawled out along with cookie crumbs here and there.

Normally, she'd be quite furious with this mess, but she figured she would let it slide for now.

She carefully took one of the blankets left on the couch and gently placed it on top of the two, gave each a kiss on the forehead, and went back up to sleep.

Meanwhile, in Netto's dreams, he has one that starts out the same as the last one he had.

He was alone, and his brother wasn't there and nowhere to be found. He was in a vast void of darkness. And it felt... horrible. He felt tears running down his cheeks again.

But something happened now that didn't happen the last time.

This time, he heard a voice call out to him.

"Netto!"

It sounded very familiar, much like the voice of his brother, but somewhat muffled and... pixelated.

"Netto! Are you alright?"

The voice called out again. It felt as though it came from somewhere very near to him. He then suddenly felt something bulky in his pocket. It was a strange, somewhat cellular device with a big red button in the middle. He presses it and out comes a small hologram -- a Navi.

"Netto, what's wrong? Why are you crying?" the Navi asks in the same voice as before. Strangely enough, it had the same, bright green eyes as that of his brother, and concern and worry was written all over its face.

"Please stop crying, Netto..." it says.

But that only made Netto cry even more, but amidst that, a small, trembling smile spreads onto his face.

The Navi reaches its small hand out over to the boy's cheek with a sympathetic smile.

"I'll always be with you, little bro... Please don't cry anymore..."
