Chapter 9: Cupcakes
Leo and I are still in the music room playing the guitar but, stop we hear sirens. Then I get a bling from my louie. I move to see what it is and look at a text from Brooke explaining to me that she followed Marcus and found the missing park ranger who tried to kill her but Alex saved her life.
Leo looks at me for a second before asking, "What is wrong?"
"Brooke was almost attacked by the missing park ranger", I tell him as I walk to the door not waiting for an answer, "I am going to check on her. See you at the clubhouse."
I rush to find Brooke at the Eagles clubhouse and spot her with Daniel. I awkwardly clear my throat before Brooke moves away and comes barreling into my arms crying. I give Daniel a questioning look as he shows me what happened on his louie before he waves goodbye.
I comfort Brooke telling her everything will be okay before I ask her, "Did you find out what Marcus was doing?"
Brooke hesitantly pulls away wiping her tears, "No."
I don't completely believe what she is saying is true but, I leave it at that since I haven't been completely honest with my family either before we say our farewells and go to sleep.

The next morning I get up, shower, and wear a backless floral skater dress in Raven colors with heels. I let my hair cascade down my shoulders and put on my sunglasses to hold them back. I go to walk with Hayley and Leo.
"So, what's this harvest festival about?", Hayley asks Leo.
"It's one of the best traditions we have here. Every year on Halloween weekend, the Greenhouse hosts an open fair for the entire community of Santa Ynez.", Leo informs us as we walk to the fair.
"Welcome to the Harvest Fair", my father begins as we all clap before he continues, "With the money you're gonna collect today, 20 kids are gonna get to spend the summer at an amazing STEM summer camp program. And you're gonna do this by selling 200 delicious gourmet cupcakes."
"Bake sale? That's the best he could come up with?", Hayley told us with a smirk.
"But, Mr. Osmond, those scholarships are really expensive. You're gonna have to sell way more than 200 cupcakes to fund them", Max informed my dad.
"Maybe Louis baked them in gold", Parker jokes as we all laugh.
"I did not. And, Max, you're right, this camp costs a lot of money. But fortunately for us, we have an alumni who recently sold his startup to Apple, and has agreed to help us out. For every cupcake that you guys sell, our anonymous friend's gonna donate One thousand dollars!", my dad tells us as we all clap at the new information.
"Not bad for a bake sale", I whisper to Hayley matching her smirk
" Each time you sell a cupcake, you ring the bell at your booth and more cash will be injected into the sphere", my dad explained to us showing us a money globe.
"Even if we only sell 'em for a dollar?", Jackie asked my dad forming a plan.
"Theoretically, yes. But there's also a twist", my dad says as Hayley mocks his predictability,"Twist? No way."
"A good leader is also a creative marketer. You must be able to sell your ideas to the public. So that's why there's also going to be a competition between the two houses to see who can earn the most money selling the same number of cupcakes. The winner will get to choose the theme for the Greenhouse Halloween dance party. However, the losing team has the pleasure of cleaning up the mess by itself after the party. Good luck.", my dad says.
"We are not going to lose!", Jackie screams as she ushers all the Raven's to the cupcake stand.
Some of Raven's leave to enjoy the fair while others sit and help come up with a marketing strategy.
"This is pathetic", Hayley mumbles as Becca agrees.
"You know what is pathetic helping to clean after the dance", Jackie remarks.
"So let's focus, come up with a strategy", Leo tells the Ravens.
"Strategy?", Hayley asks Leo.
"Mmm-hmm", I nod.
"What, are we invading Russia? I mean, all we gotta do is sell a bunch of cupcakes. A third-grader could do this", Hayley tells us.
"I mean, not as well as me", Leo boasts as I shake my head at his arrogance.
The cupcakes arrive and we begin to sell them.
"Get your red and blue Raven cupcakes!", Leo yells at passersby.
"Come on! Help support our STEM scholarship fund! Wanna get a cupcake?", Max yells at them.
"One cupcake could save the world!", Hayley mocks.
"Cupcakes? What's your problem, Woods?", Leo asks Hayley slowly getting aggravated. I grab his hand and begin to rub soothing circles on his thumb to try and calm him. It seems to work and Leo visibly relaxes.
"I don't know. It's idiotic", Hayley said in an obvious tone. As much as I love Hayley she sometimes doesn't know when she goes too far.
A British man walks up to us, "Hey. Uh, how much are these?"
Leo begins to explain the prices, "Well, the small ones go for" before Hayley interrupts him, "There's no price on these cupcakes."
The Leo looks shocked, "Really?"
"This is for charity. We are raising money for disadvantaged kids to go to a summer science camp. So we trust you to pay what you feel is fair", Hayley tells the man who looks cautiously at the cupcakes.
"What are you doing?", I whisper to Hayley worried about her plan.
"Taste it", Hayley nods at the man before telling Leo and me, "Trust me. This is democratic socialism."
"Mmm. It's delicious", the man tells us.
"Did you know that one of our STEM scholarship students from 10 years ago went to Caltech and was part of the group that invented Siri for the iPhone?", Hayley tells the man while he eats the cupcakes.
"Well, I'm gonna give you $10 for the cupcake and $10 for the scholarship," the man says handing us the money as I put it away.
"Thank you very much. You are donating to a great cause", Hayley tells the man as he walks away. We all cheer as Hayley rings the bell.
"Wow, appealing to the customer's emotions. Good job, Woods", Leo tells Hayley impressed as I silently watch not sure if we could win using this strategy.
"I just spied on the Eagles. They're just sitting around, talking. They haven't even sold a single cupcake", Jackie says happily. All the Raven's cheer believing that we will win as I am still hesitant knowing not to underestimate the Raven's.
"Captain, if we win, I thought of a good concept for the Halloween dance. Back to the Future costume dance party. I know Emma would back me up on this, but she's not here", Max tells Leo excitedly as I give him a hug before stating, "That would be such a cool theme!"
"Where is Emma?", Leo asks looking around.
"She stayed at the clubhouse. She had a headache or something", Becca informs us.
"I should go check on her", Max nervously says ready to run to Emma's side.
"Hey, Max, maybe that's not a good idea. Maybe she just needs to be alone right now", Jackie tells Max knowing he trusts her although I can see the jealousy in her eyes. We begin to sell the cupcakes using Hayley's idea but, some people are not donating a lot of money.
"You're not gonna believe this. The Eagles are selling the tiny cupcakes for 20 bucks", Becca says with a smile.
"That's ridiculous", Leo laughs.
"Hey, Emma", I state as I notice her walking up.
"Sorry I'm late", Emma says sadly.
"How's your headache?", I ask her worried about her health.
"Gone"
Just after she says this a lady walks up to us as Hayley begins her pitch.
"Delicious. huh?"
She moans in agreement as she goes to grab money out of her purse.
"I didn't realize I ran out of cash", the lady tells us with a frown.
"It's fine. Enjoy the fair", Hayley tells her with a smile before she carelessly mentions,"What? Who cares? We are almost sold out."
Eventually, the fair ends, we all go back to the stage and wait for my dad to tell us who won.
"Both teams chose unconventional and gutsy marketing strategies to sell their cupcakes for charity. The total amount raised was $150,000! We're gonna be able to send 20 kids to summer camp this year. And as to your own little challenge, the winning team outsold the losing team by merely $34. The winner of the Harvest Fair challenge, the Eagles" my dad says as the Eagles all begin to cheer.
"Unbelievable", Leo says aggravated about our loss.
I give him a small hug saying, "Hey. We tried our best"
My dad continues, "I have one more exciting announcement. Our anonymous donor has a partner. And when I told her about our charity, she agreed to match our $150,000 with another $150,000, which means we can provide 40 STEM scholarships instead of 20"
Hayley whispers in the middle of his speech, "Wait for it. There's a twist."
I laugh because my dad says soon after, "There is only one condition. Of course. Our anonymous donor's partner is also one of the top clothing designers for the fashion industry. And she has challenged our students to put on an impromptu fashion show, right now, featuring the Greenhouse clothing line. If you can pull this off, she will match our donations."
I quickly let go of Leo and rush to the Greenhouse.
Leo and Hayley give me an amused look "Where are you going, Angel"
"I love a good fashion show!", I smile at them, "Now come on. We have to get ready."
I pull them with me to the Greenhouse dressing room before I dress Hayley and Leo up in hard metal rocker clothes and put on heavy black makeup on Hayley. I then follow Sophie to get changed.
"Hey, do you have another cheer uniform?", I ask her with a smile.
"Yeah! Come on, girl!"
We both laugh as I change into an unused cheer uniform. Sophie and I do each others makeup and hair then Sophie ties my hair in a bow. We go out with the rest of the 'models' and wait to be called. I go to sit with Leo and Hayley on the floor as Leo wraps his arm around me.
My dad comes in and notifies us that the show is about to start and we all line up ready to go.
Sophie and I are up next after Leo and Hayley leave but, we stop when we notice Max's slumped figure.
"Hey, what's wrong", Sophie asks Max as we stop to check up on him as I agree, "I know you are about to go on stage!"
"I'm just bummed 'cause I had a great idea for the party theme"
"What was it?", Sophie asks as I was about to answer.
"It doesn't matter. We lost", Max sighs.
"No, really. I'm open to everyone's ideas", Sophie tells him.
"Well, have you ever seen Back to the Future?", Max asks as I give him a small hug as Sophie nods.
Sophie agrees to try her best to convince the Eagles' on board with his idea. We then go to walk down the runway. Sophie and I look at each other before we tell the crowd to move back a bit and perform one backflip, one aerial backflip, and end it with a back tuck. We pose and smile for the camera once we are done as the whole crowd is clapping for us.
"I can't wait to have you in gymnastics", Sophie tells me with a look of awe on her face about my perfect figure during the layout.
"Thanks. You too", I walk to Leo who has a look of pride on his face from my performance.
"You should join the cheer team. I know you are a Raven but you were awesome out there and I am sure Leo would allow his daughter to cheer", Sophie says with a joking smile.
I give her an unsure look as Leo nods his head, "She is right you were awesome out there.
"Sure", I say before we all have to go back on the stage as a group to show off our couture.
I walk with Hayley as we wave at everyone watching us.
