I don't care where she's from. A cute girl is a cute girl.

AMYBELLA LOOKED BACK ONE LAST time, at the sweet little house where she had grown up.
She admired the brown roof with the little chimney. The small stable next to it. The white curtains, now drawn closed. But there really was not much to admire about it because all life had been sucked out of it.
It looked so empty, so lonely and desolate. Her heart ached as she saw it getting smaller in the distance and hear eyes slowly filled with tears. She felt a harsh pull on her arm.

"Don't look back, it's bad luck." Her mother scolded her and Amybella turned back around and looked forward at the black horses that were pulling the carriage they were sitting in. Her mother took her on the journey to begin a new life. They were leaving their home and past behind and her mother was trying to forget about all of it while Amybella tried to hold onto it with all her might for the past months.

Bad luck had already befallen them. She thought.

The girl looked at her mother. Her expression was stern and stubbornly forward. Her hairstyle didn't include the two wavy strands that were normally always hanging down, framing her face. Instead, all of her hair was tied back into a bun, strictly. The warmth and the friendly smile she had worn for years had worn out and died with her husband.
The time they had spent traveling both by carriage and by ship across the eternal sea was more than two weeks before they finally arrived in Avonlea.

Amybella got out of the carriage and breathed the fresh air into her lungs. Then she went to the back of the trailers and opened them so take out Abraxas. He was her black stallion, a noble horse.

Other families could not afford to take a horse with them. Other families would not do such a thing, her mother had said several times. But Amybella had begged her and wouldn't stop pleading her mother to take Abraxas with them. The girl threatened to lock herself into her room and let her mother go to Canada alone if she wouldn't allow her to take her stallion on the journey.

"Everything will be different from now on, my friend," the girl whispered, burying her nose in the horse's black body.

She then picked up her suitcases with her dearest belongings and walked up the stairs. She stopped once more in front of a door and took a deep breath. Then she opened it and looked around the room that was to be her bedroom from now on.
It was not really large, had a small window so that a lot of light came in.
The wallpaper was a sparse dull white and a narrow bed stood at the far end of the room. Amybella walked towards it and dropped onto it. She took in the smell and closed her eyes for a moment.

Then she stood up again and walked towards the window. From there, if she leaned close enough to the glass, she had a view of the paddock where Abraxas, her stallion, was standing, plucking the grass from the snow.

Amybella packed her clothes into the narrow wardrobe, she had available. Then she unpacked the rest of her things and arranged them in her room.
She heard footsteps coming up the stairs and her mother coming in. The young woman looked around, nodded and ran out again.

"Dinner's in an hour!" she called, and heard her go down the stairs. A new start, she had said. From England to Canada, it cost her a fortune. But a fresh start was worth it.
People would talk.
A woman and a child moving from England to Avonlea.

Amybella sighed, knowing nothing here would be easy for her. She decided to take a look around the area. She ran out to the paddock and Abraxas lifted his head curiously. Amybella quickly put the saddle and halter on him, then mounted up and rode out into the wide landscapes. Their surroundings were quiet and peaceful. The blonde girl pulled her coat tighter and cursed at the autumn cold that really was serious in Canada. She didn't like the cold seasons. Fall and winter looked beautiful, but they were bitterly cold and wet.

Amybella rode into a forest that was almost reminiscent of a fairy tale. The buds glistened from the small crystals that were frozen to them and in some places a little sunlight fell on them, making them sparkle. She gave Abraxas a gentle squeeze on the thigh and he ran off happily. Unlike her, he seemed to enjoy the fresh air and slowly picked up speed.

However, as quickly as she could hardly notice, something, or rather someone, darted out from behind a tree and Abraxas was startled. Because the girl had been sitting relaxed and loose in the saddle beforehand, she had not expected this and lost her balance. Abraxas made a startled hop to the side and she had landed off his back in a little pile of leaves.

"Oh crap! Sorry." A face appeared above her. A boy with raven-black curls and cheeks, red from the cold that were hid in a scarf looked down at her. He was wearing a carded jacket and just above his brown eyes Amybella recognized little drops of water from the humidity, that reflected the sun light, sticking in his hair that hung down in his face. He held out his hand to her, which was protected from the cold in a brown glove. Amybella ignored it and scrambled to her feet.

"You scared him!" She walked towards Abraxas. Then she looked at her clothes, which were now wet and a bit muddy, the girl immediately started to freeze.

"Are you new here? You don't seem familiar with the weather in Avonlea." She heard his voice behind her. She looked at his pale face as he scanned her clothes.

"Well obviously I hadn't planned to end up on the ground!" she said quietly, wondering if he had even heard what she said.

"I'm Gilbert." The boy said and held out his hand again. Amybella took it and held it for a moment.

Gilbert Blythe. Little did she know how he and this new place, called Avonlea would change the girl's life forever.
