~District three~

When I reach the sight of the scream, I see two tributes sitting together on the forest floor.

One of them, a female, is screaming while crimson blood pours out of her stomach. The other is holding a bloody knife.

I tense, freezing in place. Aegis almost runs into me and turns to ask me what's happening, but then sees the two people and mirrors me, freezing like he just fell into ice-cold water.

I look at the one holding the knife. He has short black hair and a murderous, insane glint in his eye. I don't want to get any closer to him.

The girl lying on the ground has tan skin, red hair and freckles. Tears drip from her face to the ground, mixing with the soil. Her hands are gripped tight over the wound in her stomach, seemingly trying to stop it bleeding.

It's not working. Blood drips from her mouth, onto the ground, and she takes one last wheezing breath before looking up at me and Aegis and collapsing onto the ground.

Her cannon sounds. And the emptiness it leaves behind is heartbreaking.

I take a step back, carefully.

"Who are you?" I ask the boy. He smiles in the same way that Oceania did, a creepy smile that suggests he's completely psychotic.

He doesn't answer. The girl's hovercraft lowers down next to him, brushing his arm. He ignores it.

Another moment passes.

"Byte." His voice sounds normal, at least. But still, I raise my eyebrows. Is this boy totally insane? Does he want to bite us?

"That's my name. Byte. District three. And I'm going to win." He stands up, wiping his dagger on the edge of his sleeve. His clothes are stained red with the blood of the innocent girl.

I look at his face, and see a tear slip down his cheek. His expression doesn't change, but when I look into his eyes he looks panicked.

My gaze drifts down to the berries next to him. Aegis's eyes follow, and his stomach rumbles.

"Can I have one?" He asks. Byte nods, his smile growing wider. Aegis grabs one and before I can warn him it must be a trap, he swallows it.

Aegis looks towards me with a smile on his face. A creepy smile. An insane smile.

"Try one, Amethyst. They're really good." I stumble back. That doesn't sound like Aegis. He would never say that.

This isn't him.

I lift my ax, unwilling but prepared to attack.

But Byte makes the first move.

He snarls and leaps towards me, brandishing his wickedly-sharp knife. I break out into a run, not wanting to look behind me. But I hear two sets of footsteps following me.

Something grabs my foot, and I trip. My face collides with the muddy ground, getting the wet dirt in my mouth. I sit up, spitting it out, and Aegis leaps onto me, pinning me to the ground.

I find that he got a knife from Byte's campsite.

He wields it well, holding the tip at my throat. I don't know how and where he learned to use one, I thought he was horrible at it.

I'm afraid to breathe. Aegis's dagger cuts a thin line of blood in my neck.

I feel around for anything, anything in reach that I could use. And I find my ax, laying next to me on the ground. I must've dropped it when I tripped.

I grip the handle with my hand and close my eyes tightly, not wanting to watch.

Then I swing the ax up. There's a thunk as it makes contact, and Aegis weakens, loosening his grip. I push him off me and try not to look at my dying friend.

His cannon goes off. I almost sob. He's gone and there's nothing I can do about it.

I face Byte, who looks even more murderous than Aegis. He found more knives somewhere, and is brandishing them in both hands. I know that with one flick of his hands, I'd be dead.

My breath is coming in gasps. I throw my ax, my last resort. Byte dodges and the blade lodges itself deep into a nearby tree.

I consider diving past him and retrieving my ax, but surely he'd swing. And then I'd die.

So I rush towards him, grabbing one of his knives out of his hand. He growls like a bear and slashes with his other blade.

Blood drips from my hand. I grit my teeth and swipe my blade across his face. He ignores my move, despite the fact that he's bleeding hard and probably can't even see.

I lunge forward before he can move, stabbing my dagger deep into his skull. It works. He falls towards me, and I pull out my knife, stepping backwards.

(haha right here was 777 words :3)

His cannon goes off. I wonder what the careers are thinking right now, hearing the three cannons.

Probably glad the other tributes are killing each other off. And probably hoping I'm dead.

I take another step backwards, trying to take in the bodies. But I can't.

I turn and run. I run far, far away, until I simply can't run anymore.
