ABBOTT ELEMENTARY
philadelphia, pennsylvania
8:30am

piper stood at her door with a smile plastered onto her face. like any other day she was in a good mood, she found comfort in seeing the smiling faces of the kids as they walked into her cozy classroom.

she looked at her door which had "room 204, which is berry sweet" written on it and was filled with strawberry's. it was a project that she took on just yesterday, and was extremely proud of the outcome.

parents came and went as she stood by the door welcoming them all. it wasn't until her co-worker, finlee monet walked over.

"finn, hey." she said to the theatre teacher.

"is this yours?" finn asked as he held up a folded paper coffee filter.

"what?" piper was extremely confused. "um, no. i'm not even a big coffee drinker." she admitted. the caffeine in coffee usually made her feel too hot, and she knew that she would just be distracted from her work.

finn looked between the camera and her. the school was going to be filmed for an upcoming documentary on underfunded schools.

"you don't even want to open it...?" he pressed.

"no, i'm sure its just trash." she looked around the hallways, seeing tons of parents coming in and out from dropping their kids off.

finn let out a heavy sigh and tucked the paper in his picked as he looked at a nearby counter, which was near an abundance of kid's artwork. he looked at the camera and shook his head.

"what's with the glares at the camera?" she asked finn, receiving a laugh.

"i just think this whole documentary thing is a joke." he blurted. "it's not going to fix anything. and even though i appreciate them bringing more media to abbott, i doubt that the district is going to do anything to make the school better."

"you have a point. still, it's not like we can change much about that. i guess i'm just trying to stay hopeful and optimistic, you know?" she said, trying to lift finn's mood.

finn walked over to the wall in front of a window that was filled with kid's drawings. "you're really good with the kids."

"thanks, i try my best." she paused and looked at him. "you and me both know these kids deserve a lot more then what we and their families can give them." as soon as she said that the bell rang, and the day had officially begun.

he nodded. "i'll catch ya later." finlee said, knowing he had a class to get to.

"bye finlee!" she called out as she walked into the classroom.

"did you just call mr. monet, 'finlee'?" one of her first graders asked.

"you're crazy, and you're hearing things. i called him mr. monet." she told the student. "now who's ready to make some art?" she asked the class as a whole while she closed the door.

a student's hand shot up.

"yes, alex?" she asked, looking over at the little kid.

"are we making more strawberries?" alex asked.

she let out a light laugh. "no, sadly not. today you guys are going to be making some sculptures with clay. we will be making our sculptures based off of your emotions. remember, not everything you make has to look perfect! the joy is in the journey." she explained. "but first, we're going to take attendance. and who remembers what we do during attendance?" she asked.

"we say: 'here!'" the first graders shouted out. "and when attendance is over, we do our morning affirmation!" a girl added.

after a few minutes, attendance was over and the morning affirmations began.

"today we are going to say, 'i am...' and when i say so, you say that you are something good about yourself. i am confident. i am brave. i am smart. i am kind. i am beautiful. i am worthy. i am loved." she explained.

just then a little boy walked in, "i am late!" he blurted out.

"reese, always good to see you, my friend." piper said to the young boy before turning her attention to the hand he was holding. his dad's.

"sorry he's late. traffic was terrible." the man excused.

she looked at jake palmer as he walked in. since piper had met the father she'd found him attractive, but because he was her student's father the thought of even flirting with him never crossed her mind.

"oh it's fine! these things happen." she told jake as reese quickly put his bag into his cubby.

"well i'd still like to apologize. i'm usually not this late, but i ran into this coffee shop right by the freeway and it was packed with people. then reese was in a rush to get a muffin and we were late." he rambled on.

piper smiled at the mention of the muffins and she let out a little laugh. she held up her hand to wave off his worries. "seriously, don't worry about it. it's all good, jake." she assured him.

jake let a smile take over his face as reese walked towards her.

she crouched down to the boys' level. "you want to get started on your sculpture, reese?" she asked the boy, smiling as she watched him vigorously nodded his head.

reese ran over to the clay station and got to work on making a cat. as the boy sculpted on his cat, piper turned her attention back to jake.

"may i ask why there's french music playing?" he asked the art teacher with a grin on his face.

"oh gosh, yes! it's to show the kids that there's music and art around us all the time. i switch the language depending on the day, today is french." she explained.

"i think your students are lucky to have you." jake complimented.

she glanced at him only to see him smiling. "thanks. i love my job and my students. they're amazing." she replied to the man. "so what else do you do, besides run around after reese?" she asked making sure to keep an eye on her students.

jake thought for a moment, "well, like you, i'm passionate about my job. i actually own my own vineyard, out in napa. i also collect wine and go to auctions and all that good stuff."

her eyes lit up. "that's amazing, i love red wine. napa, huh? you're from california?" she asked.

jake smiled and nodded, "mhm, napa valley born and raised." he said as he leaned against one of the counter tops. "what about you?" he asked.

she turned her head to him, "san diego. i grew up by the beach, and went to college there at san diego state." she smiled widely. "i actually graduated with a major in fine arts and early childhood education." she finished.

he raised his brow in interest, "so you're both an amazing teacher and an amazing artist?" he teased slightly. "that's cool, what other hobbies and talents are you packing?"

"well, i love photography, nature, and music." she blurted out. "honestly, i would've become a photographer if i weren't a teacher." she finished with a laugh. "what about you? do you have any hobbies and talents?" she asked, now walking around the classroom checking each student's artwork.

"well, besides what you already know. i also love camping, kayaking, and just exploring different parts of nature." he stated.

"gotta love the outdoors." she replied.

he nodded, "oh yeah. that's where reese gets it from." he stated as he looked towards the boy who was covered in clay.

she chuckled as she looked at the boy as well. "i'm gonna have to take a picture of that. that clay monster on your shirt is amazing." she teased, making jake laugh. "come on, let's get you cleaned up." she told reese who nodded.

"i'll get out of your hair, i know you have a fort to hold down." jake joked.

piper let out a laugh as she started to walk reese over to the sink. "thanks for saying hi, jake! don't be a stranger." she smiled as she gently helped reese wash his hands in the sink.

TALKING HEAD—
piper marston

"i am piper marston, otherwise known as ms. mars. and i've been teaching all grades here as a music and art teacher at abbott for two years now. i just love seeing the creativity that the students create and seeing that they find a love for art or music!" she introduced during her solo talk in the hallway. "and when they're so proud about their work and share it with their parents. truly the highlight of it all."

"and do you have a favorite parent? one you connect with better than any other?" the cameraman, evan asked her.

piper looked away from the camera and back at it, shaking her head profusely. "no! of course not!" she said with a laugh. "every parent is important for a student's growth. i take a lot of my teaching and ideas for lessons from not only the kids but the parents." she said once she calmed down. "i can assure you that i love all of the parents equally, much like the students."

"mhm." ava said sarcastically as she walked by.

piper narrowed her eyes at ava who rolled hers playfully. "there's no need for snarky remarks, ava." piper said.

ava turned around, "i'm not being snarky. just saying, everyone knows about how you have the hots for reese's dad." she teased.

"not on camera, ava!" piper scolded with a laugh before clearing her throat and turning her attention to the camera. "i should get back in there."

evan who was behind the camera, turned it off as he opened the classroom door for piper. "i'm wondering if we should keep that part in. you know, what ava said." he tempted jokingly.

"i'm wondering if you should keep your job." she retorted teasingly as she sat at her desk.

evan laughed as he shook his head. "okay, okay. i'll take it out." he reassured her. "i swear i was just messing with you."

piper let out a sigh, "i get it, it's all jokes. but, seriously, we can't have the parents think i'm crushing on their sons dad." she said, giving evan a serious look.

"fine, if it will make you happy i'll cut the comment out." he told her, making the young woman smile.

she looked at the students. "how about an icebreaker?" she yelled out causing the students to get excited. "favorite movie, go! starting with jayden."

"finding nemo!" jayden blurted out.

"ok, great! charlie?" she asked the little girl.

"frozen!" charlie said with a giggle.

piper smiled, "perfect!"

"american gangster." serena called out.

"i think we need to make a call to your parents. for the third time about what you're watching at home." piper muttered as she looked at evan.

BREAK ROOM
12:30pm

"i've been in the mood for some tacos, we should get tacos for lunch." piper told finlee as they sat at a table in the break room.

"no, not from the taco shop up the street. the guy keeps calling me white boy." he explained.

piper shook her head, "finn! tell him to knock it off." she said.

jacob walked over and sat next to finlee placing a hand on his shoulder. "i had the same problem. but with the guy at the corner store."

"see, and did you tell him to stop?" piper questioned.

jacob shook his head, "oh absolutely not! there's an entire chapter of white fragility in that." he said as he leaned back in his chair.

"you're kidding, right? think of it as a term of endearment!" said janine as she sat at the table.

"endearment or embarrassment?" finlee retorted.

"okay, fine. no tacos for lunch." piper concluded.

finn shook his head, "you know, i could do tacos. after work."

"yeah?" piper said.

"tacos after work sounds great! who's in?" jacob said.

"i'm in." janine said with a nod.

"wait, you all want to go? because i was hoping-" finlee started to say before being interrupted.

"yeah, why not? a night out on the town with my best buds!" janine said causing finn to give a blank stare to the camera.

"what's with the long face?" piper whispered to him.

finn let out a sigh as he leaned back in his chair, "nothing important." he said quickly.

piper raised her brow as she looked at him, she wanted to press him and find out what was really bothering him but she didn't want to impose.

ROSY'S TACO BAR
philadelphia, pennsylvania
5:30pm

"this is great! just a fun night out with my fun friends." janine announced as she pulled piper into a hug.

"mhm," piper hummed. "it's great."

"sorry i'm late!" called out a voice. everyone was quick to look over where they say a blonde woman walking over. emma, piper's roommate. piper had invited the blonde to join them as she expected the dinner to be boring.

"thank god you made it," piper said as she pulled her friend into a hug.

"i almost fell down a flight of stairs like three times to make it here." emma said, shaking her head.

piper laughed, "well, i'll buy you a drink to make up for it." she assured, giving the blonde a warm smile.

"i'm holding you to that promise." emma said as she sat next to piper, giving her a sly smile.

"i won't go back on it so go nuts with the drinks." piper teased.

emma smiled and shook her head at piper's generosity. "oh, how i love you." she replied as she looked at piper.

"meet my co-workers...finlee, janine, and jacob." piper introduced the blonde to her friends.

"great to meet you!" emma said with a smile as she stuck out her hand for the three people to shake.

"your accent is beautiful!" janine exclaimed.

she laughed as she shook her head, "thank you, i'm originally from france, just moved here a few years ago." she explained.

"and she still knows the language." piper gloated.

emma laughed and shook her head, "so are the guys holding cameras your friends too?"

"oh, them? they're crew members." piper said nonchalantly. "they're filming me...us." she admitted.

"it's for a documentary. show the life of working at an underfunded school." jacob explained before taking a sip from his margarita.

"that's quite cool." she replied with a smile, "the filming thing, not the whole underfunded school thing." she added.

"you're telling me." piper said before downing the rest of her margarita.
