i was still asleep when i started to feel a light shake on the shoulder. my eyes slowly fluttered open to see nick standing beside the bed in running clothes. i groaned quietly and closed my eyes again. "five more minutes..." my voice was muffled and tired.

i could feel the bed dip as nick sat down on the edge. i knew he was going to try and get me up. "lucky." he said my name quietly, yet his voice was stern. "i told you the alarm wouldn't wake you up, you're too lazy in the mornings."

i grumbled and buried further under the blankets. "i'm not lazy, i'm comfortable. there's a difference." i said, my voice was still tired, my face still buried in the pillow.

i could sense nick's annoyed expression without even looking at him. i felt him pull lightly at the blankets. "you're lazy. come on and get up, i want to go running." he said, his voice had a hint of irritation on it.

i grumbled and slowly sat up to look at him. "why couldn't we do this in the afternoon? when it's not so goddamn early?" i asked, i was still quite grumpy from being woken up so soon.

nick pulled at my arm in an unsuccessful attempt to get me out of bed. "we can't do it in the afternoon. it gets too hot here in the afternoon and i want to go while the sunrise is still visible." he replied, he seemed quite eager to do an early morning run.

i grumbled again as i slowly sat up fully. i knew there was no arguing with nick when he wanted to do something. "yeah, yeah, okay." i said as i yawned and let myself stretch for a moment. i could see a satisfied expression on nick's face as he saw me finally giving up my morning comfort.

"finally. c'mon, get up, get on some clothes." he said to me, i wasn't sure if he was being impatient or if he was just excited. he stood up and crossed his arms, like he was going to watch and make sure i was actually getting up.

i groaned and reluctantly pushed the blankets off. "you're so impatient." i grumbled, my voice still tired. i got out of the bed and began to change into some running clothes.

~~

i was now dressed now in running clothes and followed nick out of the back door and onto the beach. the air was cool against my skin as the sun slowly started to rise.

nick started stretching for a moment, and i rolled my eyes at his insistence to get up so early. "do we really have to do this right now? it's still so early..." i joked, though i started stretching too.

nick chuckled and shot me an amused look. "yes, we really have to do this early." he replied, a cocky smirk on his face. "and to answer your next question, yes, we're doing this every day that we're here."

i let out another groan of irritation, even though i knew it was coming. there was no stopping nick when he had something in mind. "ugh, why?!" i complained, "you're such an exercise freak."

nick rolled his eyes at my complaining, he knew exactly how much i hated a consistent exercise routine. "i'm not a freak, i'm just trying to get in a good shape." he replied, a hint of annoyance in his voice.

"you're already in good shape." i countered.

nick chuckled at my words. "thanks for the compliment." he said, he paused for a moment to finish stretching. "now hurry up and stretch so we can start the run." he ordered, he looked out at the beach, eager to get started.

a few minutes later, we started the run. i was definitely a bit tired, but i managed to keep pace with nick. the air was pleasantly warm, and the sky was a beautiful combination of soft pinks and oranges. the soft sand under my feet made it somewhat more challenging to run, but the scenery made up for it.

7:30am

back at the airbnb, i let nick get first dibs on the shower while i attempted to cook breakfast, knowing damn well i can't cook.

"eggs..." i said as i pulled out the carton. "can't be too hard." i said as i began to crack them into a measuring cup.

nick chuckled as he watched me attempt to cook breakfast. "you're gonna end up making a big mess in less than 10 minutes." he teased, he didn't have too much faith in my cooking skills either.

"go take your shower! i got this in the bag." i said as i dismissed him with the wave of my hand.

nick chuckled again at my overly confident response. "sure you will." he said, his voice still taunting. he knew damn well i would make a mess.

he walked off towards the bathroom, still laughing to himself as he did.

quickly i facetimed my sister, ramona.

ramona answered the call after a couple of rings, and her face appeared on the screen. she looked well rested, her hair was nicely brushed.

"morning, lucky." she said in a casual tone, a small smile on her face.

ramona sat on what looked to be her bed. her room was neat and tidy, it was obvious that she was much more responsible for cleaning up her space than i was for mine. "teach me how to make eggs." i said.

ramona chuckled faintly as she heard my question. "you don't know how to make eggs?" she asked, her tone was lighthearted and slightly mocking. it was no real revelation that i wasn't very knowledgeable with cooking.

"see i do, i just don't wanna mess it up." i explained.

she laughed again, not surprised by my answer. "lucky, there's no real way to mess up eggs. it's just eggs." she reassured me, she seemed to be very confident in her own cooking knowledge.

i groaned and rolled my eyes as i put a pan on the stove. "easy for you to say. you know how to cook." i said to her, i was growing more anxious about cooking.

ramona continued to coach me on how to cook the eggs. she told me to heat the pan, add some oil, wait a minute or two to crack the eggs and stir them gently. i did exactly as she told me and in a few minutes, i managed to make an okay-looking plate of scrambled eggs.

"see? not so hard." ramona said before leaning into the camera to get a closer view of me, "where even are you? that doesn't look like your kitchen."

"cancún with nick! figured we needed a break." i said with a smile.

"cancún? like mexico?" ramona said, visibly surprised.

i nodded before seeing nick walking over to me. "yep, look i gotta go..." i said to her with a crooked smile.

"wait, lucky!" she called out but i had already hung up.

nick approached me with a towel around his waist. he had just gotten out of the shower. "who were you talking to?" he asked as he walked towards the kitchen.

i set down my phone. "my sister. i facetimed because i needed help making breakfast."

nick chuckled. "i thought you said you could handle breakfast." he teased.

i rolled my eyes slightly out of playful sarcasm. "i could, but ramona also has some tips." i replied before nodding to his towel. "why are you in just a towel?"

nick laughed faintly. "i was getting dressed but then i heard you giggling in here. who knows what you'd be up to?" he replied, his tone was playful. he leaned his hip against the counter casually.

i grumbled and rolled my eyes again. "i'm perfectly capable of being trusted alone by myself you know." i said in a mocking tone. i then smirked and looked at him pointedly. "don't act like you didn't just want to have the chance to show off your shirtless self to me."

nick chuckled again, he had no arguments against my point. "oh come on, like you don't love the view." his voice was lighthearted and cocky as he teased me with a sly smirk.

i rolled my eyes and smiled sarcastically. "of course i *totally* love the view." i replied as i leaned on the counter too. "that's why i'm definitely not wishing you put on a shirt."

he let out a laugh and spoke, "i'm gonna go get dressed, i don't want the food to get cold." nick said before walking away.

~~

a minute later, nick returned, no longer in a towel. we both began to eat the scrambled eggs, and i looked at him. "what are we doing today?" i asked, i was curious to know whether or not he had another plan that included exercise.

nick swallowed a bite of his food before answering. "do you know how to surf?" he replied, he looked quite eager as he said that.

i furrowed my eyebrows and shook my head, i didn't know how to surf. "uh, no...but! i can paddleboard." i said with a wide smile.

nick chuckled again, his amused expression was always on his face as he talked to me. "you think you can paddleboard, but in reality you're gonna end up falling off and landing on your ass in two minutes."

i rolled my eyes. "oh shut up, i learned how to paddleboard in camp when i was like seventeen." i countered.

"and now you're twenty four. have you even touched a board since then?" he asked.

i thought for a moment and i realized that he brought up a good point. "well, no...but how bad at paddleboarding can I really be? it's like, standing up and paddling in the water." i said, clearly underestimating how much balance it took.

"alright well today you're gonna learn how to surf. i'm gonna make that my mission." he said before taking a bite of his eggs.

i rolled my eyes again, i had never even tried surfing before so i was very doubtful that i'd figure it out in a single day. "how are you so sure i'm going to be able to learn it? i could be really bad..." i argued.

nick let out another laugh, his overconfidence was unwavering. "trust me, you're gonna be fine." he said, he seemed very positive that i was going to catch on quickly. "you're a fast learner, you'll pick up the trick to it in no time."

THE BEACH
cancún, mexico
2pm

a couple hours later, we arrived at a secluded stretch of beach, and it seemed like a perfect spot for me to attempt to learn how to surf. the beach was mostly empty, as the area was a bit less populated.

nick set down a small bag with two boards. "alright, first lesson: the basics." he said confidently, as if he was a professional surfing teacher.

i looked at him with a doubtful expression. "and what exactly are the basics?" i asked, i had never been an athletic person in my life. i had a feeling that i would make a fool of myself.

nick smiled, his eyes were full of confidence. "the first thing is learning your stance. you should stand on your board up straight, with your feet slightly apart." he replied, he stood on one of the boards and demonstrated it.

i watched him intently and nodded slightly, mentally taking notes. "alright, i think i can do that." i said, still quite unsure about my own skills. i stepped onto the second board and tried to mimic his stance, but ended up wobbling a little.

nick chuckled as he saw my balance waver for a moment. "you're doing pretty good so far. now you're gonna take turns paddling out with your arms."

"i feel like a kid." i said as i followed his instructions, "like you know those kids who you'll see on vacation. they're up at the crack ass of dawn on the sand learning to surf with their instructor."

nick laughed yet again, his amusement at my words was obvious. "yeah well, you're basically acting like one." he teased, his tone was lighthearted. "i mean look at you, you're barely holding that board up while standing."

~~

a couple minutes later, we had both paddled out into the water, and i was still struggling to keep my balance. nick looked like a natural while i was still a hot mess.

i was wobbling as i tried to maintain my balance. "this isn't as easy as it looked." i said, my tone was a combination of frustration and slight embarrassment.

nick chuckled as he watched me, his face looked slightly amused. "don't worry yourself so much. you're doing pretty good." he reassured me, his words were encouraging.

~~

a couple hours later, the sun was starting to lower on the horizon as we continued to try and make progress. i was finally starting to get the hang of it, and my balance was improving slightly.

after a little more practice, i managed to catch a wave. i then paddled my board over to where nick was sitting. excitement was clearly written on my face.

"i did it!" i yelled out.

nick's expression turned from amusement to excitement, he looked pleased by my progress. "you did. congratulations, you're now an expert surfer." he teased, his smile was wide.

i rolled my eyes but a wide smile crept onto my face. "yeah, let's not get ahead of ourselves here. i'm now at the bare minimum of being an okay-ish surfer." i said as i made my way to the shore.

nick laughed as he followed me to shore. "alright fine, you're an okay-ish new surfer." he said in a lighthearted tone.

as we approached the beach, i took a seat on the sand, letting out a sigh of exhaustion. "i gotta admit, that was actually somewhat fun."

he smiled and sat next to me, "i gotta admit i'm extremely proud of you." he said before kissing me softly.

i smiled faintly against his lips, feeling a wave of accomplishment wash over me. "well what can i say, i have a great teacher." i said, my words a little snarky. i looked out to the ocean, watching the sun begin to set. "the view isn't so bad either."

nick smiled at my snarky comment, he then followed my gaze to the setting sun. "you're right about that. absolutely perfect timing too." he said before wrapping an arm around my shoulders.

"you wanna go swim?" i asked.

nick smiled again and nodded. "sure. the water's nice at this time." he said before standing up.

i laughed faintly. "you know, i never got tired of that view. you shirtless will always be a great view." i said, my voice was teasing.

nick laughed as he heard my words, his face turned into a smirk. "like what you see, huh?" he teased, his voice flirty.
he didn't need me to answer, he could tell that i loved the view.

"oh shut up, you're so full of yourself." i said i followed suit and stood up. i was acting like i was disgusted, but i was secretly loving his confidence.

we both walked into the water, and we spent a couple minutes simply swimming, enjoying the feel of the water against our skin. the sun continued to set as the sky slowly turned into a beautiful orange.

after a while, nick turned towards me and moved to stand directly in front of me. he placed his hands on my hips, pulling me closer. his body was only a few inches from mine.

my heart began to beat faster as nick moved closer, his eyes were fixated on mine. our bodies were almost touching and his hands still lingered on my hips. i placed my hands on his chest, feeling his muscles beneath my fingertips.

as silence enveloped us, nick closed the gap between our bodies, his chest against mine. he wrapped his arms around my waist and pulled me in closer, loping us into a kiss.

i parted my lips slightly, letting him deepen the kiss. my body was now firmly pressed against his, the water lapping softly at our skins. nick's hands were on my hips, his touch was gentle but firm.

i was completely in the moment, my body pressed against nick's, our lips locked together. i could taste the salt from the water on his skin, and i felt his tongue in my mouth. suddenly, a large wave crashed into us without warning.

we both broke apart from the kiss, slightly gasping in surprise as the huge wave drenched us. the water splashed over our bodies, covering us head to toe.

nicholas looked at me and let out a loud chuckle, i looked at him and shook my head whilst laughing myself.

there was now a thin layer of salt water covering us as we laughed. i looked up at nick and shook my head. "it's like nature telling us to stop making out." i joked.

"it's because i'm starving but i uh didn't wanna tell you." he said.

"what? c'mon.. let's get some food." i said as i pulled him out of the water. "i wanna put the boards on the deck though." i said as i walked over to our surfboards, the deck was only a few feet away.

nick followed me as i walked back up to shore. our bodies dripping water and our skin was now covered in a layer of salt. i managed to drag both surfboards onto the deck before sitting down next to them.

i sat down and stretched out, the sky was now a deep shade of orange as the sun lowered. nick took a seat next to me, and i leaned into his side slightly.

i then looked down the shore at other homes, one in particular stood out to me. it had fairy lights and loud voices came from it, people were clearly outside.

"i wonder what they're up to." i said as i stood up.

nick looked over in the direction i was looking. he squinted his eyes and shrugged his shoulders slightly. the lights from the house were visible from our spot, and the sound of people's laughter was drifting towards us.

he sat up and looked at me. "who knows. why, wanting to join a party?" he teased, he knew i loved a good party.

"free food is free food." i said as i ran off the deck jokingly.

nick stood up and chuckled as i began to jog in the direction of the house. in his mind he already knew what i was going to do, he was used to my antics.

i walked up to the house and the laughter was getting much louder as i got closer. nick was still laughing softly behind me. the house was in full view now.

the moment i could see the people, a smile crept onto my face. almost all of the guests had swimwear on, most of them were couples or small friend groups. they were all scattered across the back of the patio and the inside.

"c'mon." i said to nick as i walked in.

nick chuckled again as i began to walk onto the patio. it was packed with people, laughing and drinking, enjoying each other's company. they either didn't notice us or chose to ignore us.

the party was obviously much fancier than a typical pool party, the food and drinks looked much better and the atmosphere was overall fancier. i scanned the area intently, looking for the food table. once i located it, i smirked.

i then tugged on nick's arm and walked straight to the food table. there were several different types of finger foods lined across the table and it all looked too good to pass up.

the table was out in the open and it seemed like no one was paying much attention to the food, they were more focused on themselves.

"alright let's see what we got here." i said as i looked at the food. there were several options of what looked incredibly fancy finger food.

i started plating things while nick mirrored my movements, i then eyed a drink table. there were shot filled glasses on them.

"ouuu la la." i said as i downed three, before looking at nicholas.

he let out a sigh before taking two for himself. "alright let's get out of here." he said.

we were seconds away from walking out of the deck door when i heard: "lucky cheyenne clarke? what on earth are you doing here?"

"mom?" i muttered, recognizing the voice before looking back.

standing behind us was my mother, leighann. her eyes were wide as she looked at me. i felt my body tense up at the sight of her.

"hi, mom..." i managed to say, my voice was tense and quiet.

leighann's eyes widened even more upon hearing my voice. "what in the hell are you doing here?" she asked, her tone was sharp and demanding.

i could feel nick tensing up slightly next to me as my mother scolded me. "we're here in mexico on vacation and then i heard you were here too! so grandma told me where to find you!" i lied, but i knew she'd probably believe it.

leighann's eyebrows furrowed as she heard my explanation. she crossed her arms over her chest, and her expression changed to one of disbelief. "she told you where to find me?" she repeated, her tone was still sharp. "inside, now. both of you."

nick and i shared a look. we both knew even at the age of twenty four, we were in trouble, but neither of us dared to argue with my mother. i let out a slight sigh before reluctantly following her to somewhere more private.

~~

both wrapped in towels, nick and i listened as my mom went on and on, both of us slightly feeling the effects of the shots. "i mean, i'm not even mad...it's just. lucky, i wish you would've told me you even went on vacation! after the media basically ripped you to shreds i've been worried about you." she said.

i felt a pang of guilt in my chest as i listened to her words. she had a point, i should have told her. i should have let her know that i was alright. i fidgeted with my fingers in my lap as i tried to come up with something to say.

"i'm sorry, but it is good to see you." i said softly.

my mother's expression softened a bit as she saw me fiddling with my fingers. "you better be." she said, her tone was slightly stricter, but not as much as before. she then looked at nick and frowned slightly. "and i can't even get mad at you two right now." she added. it was clear that she wasn't pleased in the slightest.

i knew exactly what she was referring to. me and nick were slightly buzzed from the shots we took before the scolding, and we both looked like a mess in our towels.

nick's cheeks were slightly flushed and he had a relaxed expression on his face. he looked like he was seconds away from collapsing onto the bed and passing out.

"eat, please. and get some rest." my mom said referring to the plates in front of us before walking out.

both of us sat there in a slightly awkward silence for a moment before nick groaned. "jesus christ, i feel like we're sixteen." he said before resting his head back against a pillow.

"that's my mom for you. didn't i tell you back in los angeles that she's overprotective?" i said to him.

"yes but-" he started.

"you didn't believe me! chances are she's probably getting the guest rooms ready for us." i said as i started to eat.

nick chuckled faintly as he listened to my words. it was true. my mom was extremely overprotective. she treated me like i was a child most of the time.

he sat up and began to eat as well.
"she is going to force us to stay though." he said.

"one hundred percent." i added.
