( a nicholas alexander chavez fic )

NICHOLAS' APARTMENT
los angeles, california
october 5, 2024
sunday
10am

we were currently at nick's apartment, packing my remaining belongings i had left there from my time in los angeles. he allowed me to use one of his suitcases to pack all of the things purchased.

i zipped up the suitcases, finished packing and sat down on it to hold it closed. i heaved a sigh, dreading saying goodbye.

nick was sitting on the couch behind me, i could feel his gaze on me. i could feel his sadness just as mine.

he suddenly spoke up. "let me at least take you to the airport." his tone was firm.

i shook my head, "i have the rental car that i have to drop off anyway. it wouldn't make any sense for you to take me." i said softly.

"don't care, i'm taking you." he said stubbornly.

"but the rental-" i started to say.

"i'll have one of my friends take the rental." he interrupted.

"your friends don't have an id with the name lucky clarke on it, or do they?" i argued.

i turned my head around to look at him, seeing his face. he was sitting there, stubbornly staring back at me, silently telling me that he wasn't budging. i huffed before speaking up.

"are you gonna keep staring at me until i agree?" i asked.

he nodded as if the answer was obvious. "yes." he said with a slight smirk. "i'm staying right here on this couch until you agree to let me take you."

i let out a sigh, his stubbornness and determination to take me to the airport was not letting up. i knew i was not going to change his mind, so i gave in for the sake of not arguing.

"fine." i said, giving up the fight.

he smiled hearing me finally agree. "good." he stood up and walked over to me, standing before me. he leaned down and grabbed the handle of the suitcase i was sitting on. "ready?" he asked before lifting me up to my feet.

"yeah.." i mumbled, not quite ready, despite agreeing.

he pulled up the two suitcases and turned to look at me, noticing my demeanor and expression. "let's get going, luck." he said softly, noticing my reluctance to say goodbye.

i nodded, knowing that the sooner we got to the airport, the sooner i'd be home. he knew i didn't want to go.

i picked up my purse and walked slowly to the front door, nich behind me holding my two suitcases.

we were both silent, both dreading dropping me off at the airport and having to say goodbye.

we both made it down to his jeep and he placed my luggage in the back before opening the passenger door for me, allowing me to take a seat.

he shut the door and walked over to the driver's side before getting in himself and starting the engine.

he connected his phone to the aux which immediately started playing music that he didn't bother to turn off. it was however clear that neither of us were in a very chatty mood. we silently began driving to the airport.

"you'll let me know when you're ever in new york, right?" i said quietly over a the strokes song that played through the jeep speakers.

he hummed in response before he quickly glanced over at me and then back at the road. "of course." he said, his tone soft.

there was a beat of silence before i found the courage to speak up again, my voice breaking as i did so. "i'm gonna miss you." it came out more as a whisper than anything.

i could see his grip on the steering wheel tighten before he spoke up. "i'm gonna miss you too." i could hear the sadness in his voice as he said it.

i took a moment before continuing. "don't be a stranger, nick." i said, trying to lighten the mood slightly, not wanting to dwell on the sadness of goodbye.

he chuckled slightly with a scoff, knowing that i was attempting to lighten the mood of the moment. "i won't, i promise." he said, clearly playing along. he reached over and turned the radio volume down. "and you make sure not to be a stranger either."

"i won't." i said quietly, not taking my eyes off the road, watching the surroundings pass by.

he hummed in response, clearly pleased with my answer. "and make sure to text me when you land, so i know you're safe." he said, a slight order in his tone.

i chuckled slightly, finding his need for me to text him cute. "i will, don't worry. i'll text you as soon as i arrive." i said reassuringly.

he hummed in response as we continued to drive silently. i turned to look at him every few minutes, studying his features, wanting to take in his appearance while i still could. i knew that it would be awhile before i could see him again.

~~

about half an hour later, we had arrived at the lax airport. nicholas pulled over to the designated drop off spot and we both sat still, neither one of us making any attempt to move. we were both dreading our goodbye, the inevitable feeling of sadness upon us.

nick let out a sigh before speaking up. "i guess we should get your bags." he mumbled.

i didn't move to get up, staying still, my eyes glued on his face. he was silently staring back. neither one of us made any move to get up or get out of the jeep.

"lucky.." he mumbled, his tone soft. he was still looking directly at me, studying my face, wanting to commit my face to memory. he slowly reached over and tucked a strand of hair behind my ear, his fingers lingering on my hair.

while he was slowly tucking my hair behind my ear, i slowly reached out and held the hand that he was doing the motion with.

i silently held his hand, gently rubbing his skin with my thumb while my eyes were still locked on his face.

he smiled slightly, silently enjoying the feeling of my hands on his. he didn't pull it back into his lap or remove my grip, he allowed my touch, gently caressing his skin with my thumb.

he continued to observe my face, wanting to commit my image to memory.

"i should've gotten you a cheap ticket so you could walk me to my gate." i said with a small laugh.

he chuckled with a soft smile, loving the sound of my voice trying to joke around. "i wish i could walk you to your gate." he said his tone soft, clearly wishing that he could follow me to the gate, to be close to me for moments longer before i boarded the plane.

i returned his soft smile and hummed in response. i continued caressing his skin with my thumb, not wanting to let go and release his hand. "i wish you could too." i said, my tone equally as soft.

he continued to silently observe my face, taking in our last moments. as soon as the thought of us needing to say goodbye crossed my mind again, i leaned forward, desperate to kiss him one last time.

i placed my free hand on nape of his neck and lightly pulled him towards me before connecting our lips.

he didn't argue or hold back, he allowed me to pull him closer and returned the kiss, letting his lips move against mine. he reached his free hand up to cup my cheeks, not wanting to pull away.

just then a loud bang on the hood of the car interrupted our kiss and made us break apart.

we both turned our heads to look out the windshield to an airport worker who had knocked on the hood of the jeep. he was standing there with a hand on his hip, a look of slight annoyance and exhaustion on his face.

i turned my head back to look at nich, both our lips still wet from the kiss.

"either unload or get out of the way!" the man yelled.

nicholas and i both chuckled after the man's yell. we knew we couldn't stay in the same place forever, even though we wanted to.

"i guess we have to do it now.." i mumbled, turning back to look at the front windshield.

he hummed in response and sighed. he pulled back his hands, bringing one back to his lap and the other to turn off the car. "guess we do have to do it now.." he repeated.

i gave a soft sigh as well, knowing that now was the time to leave.

he unbuckled his seatbelt and i copied. he looked back over at me. "you ready?" he asked, his tone still soft.

"no, but yes." i said as i hopped out of the car.

he chuckled slightly at my response, knowing that i was feeling just as sad as he was about this goodbye.

he got out of the car as well and immediately began unloading the luggage from the back. he handed me my purse before lifting the luggage out of the back and placing it on the ground.

i took my purse and watched him, silently observing his actions. i couldn't help but notice how saddened he was, and i knew he was trying not to show it.

he shut the back of the car after unloading my two suitcases, and turned to face me again.

i then pulled him into a tight hug to which he returned just as tightly. "bye nick...thank you for everything. for letting me stay with you, for putting up with me, for the gifts...for everything." i said into his shoulder.

silently resting his chin on top of my head. he was still attempting to hold back his feelings. he spoke up after a moment, his voice slightly cracking. "no need to thank me, lucky. i'm happy to do all of that for you..i just wish that you lived closer to me.." he admitted.

i squeezed him tighter upon hearing his voice crack and his admission. i was trying my best to keep my own emotions in check, not wanting to make this any harder than it already was.

i buried my face in the crook of his neck, feeling his arms wrapped around me.

he returned my tight squeeze, not wanting to let go. he silently held me close, memorizing how it felt to hold me closely.

he then slowly untangled from the hug and took a small step back, his hands still on my arms. "you should get going.." he said, his tone still soft but slightly sad.

i cleared my throat and looked down as i grabbed a hold of my suitcases. "yes i should," i said as i looked up at him with sad eyes. "goodbye, nicholas. get home safely, okay?"

he nodded in response, returning my sad gaze with the same look. "i will. you get home safely too, okay?" he said, almost pleading.

i hummed in response and returned the nod. i slowly turned around and picked up my suitcases, getting ready to roll away.

just then, a thought came to my mind and i stopped for a moment. i gently set my luggage back down and turned to face nich again.

"nick?" i called out.

he turned to look at me and cocked his head, noticing the look on my face, silently wondering what was on my mind. "yeah?" he answered.

"i actually got you something." i said as i looked through my purse before pulling out a small box.

he looked at the box that i pulled out and was silent as he observed it in confusion, not knowing what could be inside of it. he gently took it from me and looked at it, turning it around in his hand.

"what's this?" he asked, not looking up from the small box.

i looked over only to lock eyes with the same worker who banged on nick's car. "it's a small token of my appreciation, now get home. i don't want you to get yelled at again." i said before kissing his cheek.

he stood there for a moment, holding the small box that i had just placed into his hands. then he felt my lips on his cheek, causing him to turn his head and look back at me with a softened expression. he nodded and gave a silent "thank you" before taking another step back.

"you have to go now," he said as he gently ushered me away, not wanting another worker to come and yell at him again.

i nodded in understanding, reluctantly accepting being pushed away.

i then turned and began walking into the airport with my two heavy suitcases.

he watched me disappear into the bustling airport before looking down at the small box in his hand, now being curious as to what was inside of it.

i forced myself to walk away, avoiding looking back, knowing that doing so would break me and make me run straight into his arms. i made my way through the crowded airport, rolling my two suitcases behind me.

i silently thought of the small gift i had gotten him, a new, david yurman, cross necklace as his other one was visibly old.

i thought about how he would react to it. knowing him, he would be touched by the gift, touched that i thought of him and thought to get him something. i knew him well enough that i knew he would wear it almost every day.

i felt my eyes start to water slightly as i thought of him wearing the new necklace, a reminder of me.

LUCKY, MARLEY AND LUCY'S SHARED APARTMENT
new york, new york
7pm

i approached the front door to the apartment i shared with two of my closest friends. i took a deep breath, preparing myself mentally before opening the front door.

i was greeted with complete silence and darkness. i didn't think the empty apartment was that weird given that it was seven o clock on a sunday. the girls were probably out at a bar right about now.

i let out a sigh and turned on the lights. once i flipped the light switch and turned on the lights, the living room was suddenly filled with a choir of voices shouting "SURPRISE!"

i was in complete shock for a few seconds, blinking rapidly not quite believing the sight in front of me.

it wasn't even just lucy and marley who were in the living room, but also many of my friends were there as well. influencers, models, normal friends...you name it. they were all smiling and waiting for a reaction from me, some holding colorful balloons in their hands.

i continued to blink, still not quite believing that they had all come to the apartment to throw a surprise welcome back party for me.

"welcome back bitch!" lucy exclaimed as she squeezed through the crowd over to me. using the tiara that was placed on her head, she put it on my head. "happy birthday, lucky."

i laughed softly and watched as marley put a sash on me. "you look beautiful." marley added.

i couldn't help but laugh at the sight of lucy's tiara being placed on my head and marley's sash being put around my shoulders.

i shook my head slightly with a chuckle. "i can't believe you guys did this." i said as i looked around the room at my friends who all had wide smiles on their faces. "is this a birthday party or a welcome back party?" i said referring to the mixed decorations.

lucy and marley both looked at each other and smirked slightly before looking back at me with wide grins.

"it's both now," lucy said casually. marley nodded and shrugged, agreeing with lucy's answer.

"we decided to combine your birthday and welcome back into one party, since they coincide with each other." marley explained.

i chuckled and shook my head slightly at my friend's response.

"of course you guys did. where's the alcohol? i need a drink." i said jokingly to which both of my friends pointed towards the kitchen.
