Perfect.
That was perfect.
At least for Nelson. Neither Castle nor Devon understood what was perfect about it. To the lawyer, on the other hand, it was incomprehensible that neither of them wanted to understand what it meant. A friend in Wilson Fisk's camp.
As soon as Nelson said that, Devon had to laugh out loud, and even the silent and rather unemotional Frank Castle had to press his lips together to keep from joining in.
Pure nonsense. Knowing someone didn't mean they were on your side, or that they were going to change. Everyone had a reason for what he or she did. A lot of things, most things, don't happen without a reason. When John was with Fisk, it wasn't without a reason. And at the very least, they would suddenly change their attitudes, views, or ambitions and be convinced otherwise. Changing sides doesn't happen through conversation. Anyone could come along and people from the past wouldn't change that.
"Carnage," Devon muttered after she had cleared things up with John and went back to leafing through the many files and newspaper articles on the table.
"No," the dark-haired man flatly refused, raising a warning finger when the woman looked at him, "No way."
"What's Carnage?" asked Foggy, looking back and forth between Frank and Devon, "Covert Operation...."
"Kasady," Castle clarified immediately, "Cletus. Kasady. It's not an operation. They are Carnage."
"A symbiote. There's a symbiote in him," the lawyer was enlightened by Devon, the question mark on his face growing larger, "the so-called 'monster' in Frisco. The carnage in the harbor with the seventy-six corpses... .... what was left of it, rather. The individual parts, that was Carnage.... and Kasady...., but much more Carnage. Kind of like Venom here in New York, only red and.... bloodier...."
"I'll join him," Nelson pointed at Frank without having to think about it, "No. Nobody wants Kasady on the loose again. No way."
It would be over. Without exception. Faster than anyone could see. Once and for all. No going back. No more negotiations, no more releases. No one could help Fisk. The dead could not be helped. Sometimes you have to do what you have to do. What is necessary. For example, when the necessary requires a necessary evil. Kasady and Carnage were the necessary evil.
Not an option for Castle and Nelson. It was a step too far for them. Murder and working with criminals was fine, but letting a mass murderer do the dirty work was too much. Of course.
Besides, they had so many options.
"Oh, how did I miss this?" a happy smile appeared on Devon's face as she rummaged through the collection of newspaper clippings and handed the folder to Frank unbidden before he could ask, causing Foggy to join him to take a look.
"Why Stark? He's dead," Foggy inquired, glancing from the second report to Devon, but Frank was already turning the page and pressing it to his chest, because that should have made the question moot, "I know who Toomes is. Invented some good stuff.... oh.... OH!.... No."
"Yes, we do," and this time there was no argument and the two men couldn't convince Devon, "and Aldrich possibly. Any help we can get, no matter how small, is a step in the right direction. Getting rid of Fisk. I'm not worried about Toomes. As for Aldrich, on the other hand...."
"Must have been a dream date," how funny Castle could get, which earned him a dirty look from Devon and that very expression made him smile, "Come on. This was definitely not a meeting. Tell that to someone else."
Jealous?
