This will take longer than a few days. A few days, as Mila had assumed in advance, would certainly turn into a week, if not two. If everything went well, otherwise the house thing could drag on for a while.
On the other hand, Mila could leave everything as it was. It had become her house and she could do whatever she wanted with it. Basically, she could let it fall apart and no one could say anything about it.
Little by little, Mila's eyes became heavy; the letters of the individual words on the papers from the insurance companies, all the statements and bills became a mush, and until the phone rang a few hours later, she had not even noticed that she had fallen asleep. With all this going on, no wonder. Especially when more than half of them are incomprehensible. The bills were still okay. They had been paid. A payment slip had been stapled in front of each bill. No debts for now. She could barely keep up with the bills and not at all with the insurance.
It wasn't until Mila woke up and looked around that she realized she had fallen asleep.
"It's bad now," Mila called down the stairs, coming out of her father's study and looking down at the front door, "In a few hours, or tonight if you have to."
"Not even five minutes?" replied a male voice that sounded familiar to Mila, and through it came slowly down the stairs, "Hey, you've got five minutes, haven't you, Mil?"
"Word travels fast that I'm here," Mila snorted, because it was so typical for this small town, "Really Jason, it's not really appropriate right now. Wrong time."
"Will you at least open the door for a minute?" an already almost disappointed Jason was heard, causing Mila to put her hand on the handle, pause and take a moment before opening it, but staying hidden behind it so as not to catch a ray of sunlight, "Hey, I wanted..."
"Come on in. Come on. ", Jason was interrupted by Mila and the last bit into the house, because she took a long time and closed the door right after.
"First not at all, and then as stormy as come....", Jason had hardly turned around when he stood in the dimly lit hallway and saw Mila, the latter fell silent and looked at his old schoolmate stunned, "Shit".
Well, thank you very much. That's exactly the kind of reaction you want when you finally see each other again after years. Shit.
