There was one thing Mila had to do now. Absolutely had to do.
After closing the front door, Mila put her bunch of keys on the small cupboard in the hallway and let her bag slide from her shoulder to the floor. Then she went to the first room, the kitchen, and closed the blinds, which might not be completely translucent anymore, but as she knew her father, he didn't care as long as it was half dark, and there was no need to buy new ones. In a few hours, she would be able to see well enough to realize how well they were still intact.
It took less than ten minutes for all the windows in the house to be closed, and Mila didn't have to worry about forgetting the time and going up in smoke and dust.
Less than half an hour later, the doorbell rang, causing Mila to raise her head in surprise and furrow her brow, for she had no idea who it could be. For the sole reason that no one knew she was coming to town. Always when she was least needed. Sorting through documents and looking through boxes on the mail floor.
"Yes?" Mila asked disinterestedly after she had opened the door and two police officers were standing in front of her, "Can I help you?"
"The neighbors called and told us that there was an unknown car in the driveway and that someone was in the house, although that shouldn't be the case as the owner died a few days ago," the man replied, looking briefly at his colleague who had stopped in her tracks, "May I ask who you are and see your ID?"
"The deceased's daughter," Mila replied curtly, glancing from the policeman in front of her to the woman and back again, "A burglar would hardly open the door. Check the license plate and you'll have my ID. Have a nice rest of the night."
With that, Mila took a step back and closed the door without waiting for an answer from the officer. That was what she called boredom. What great neighbors they were, with nothing better to do than wait for something to happen. One would have to believe or think that some people just stand curiously in front of the window during the day so as not to miss anything in case something happens, and not at night. So it was that the neighborhood was already being watched at night.
