MANHATTAN AUTO SALES
new york, new york
9am
"this car really is beautiful." i said to the saleswoman.
she nodded, "oh yes. this is a 2000 mercedes-benz slk-class." the saleswoman replied. "we just got her in yesterday."
"really? you know, i've been wanting a car for awhile and i got mugged not too long ago, so i figured that nows the time to get one." i said as i sat on the drivers seat.
she nodded, "i hear you loud and clear. the streets just aren't safe anymore."
just then, i caught a whiff of something and held my nose.
"isn't the leather interior just wonderful?" the woman said, oblivious to my nose holding.
"it is! it's just, the smell is just a little intense." i told her.
the saleswoman smiled before giving a little nod. "yeah, that happens sometimes when you let a car sit in the lot for awhile. sometimes the scent of leather cleaner gets a little strong." she said, not seeming too fazed by the scent. "that's pretty common, most customers..." she started to say but she was cut off by a sudden gag noise.
i tried to hold it in, but the smell was so strong that it made me nauseous. i quickly brought a hand to my mouth before throwing up all over the passenger floor.
as the saleswoman and i walked away, leaving the workers to clean the car i brought my hand to my forehead. "i am so sorry. it just hit me out of nowhere! it's so weird, smells have been making me nauseous lately."
the woman then stopped in her tracks, "boobs tender? achy back?"
"yeah." i said as i leaned on the wall. "has it been going around?"
"only for centuries. i went through it all when i was carrying my oldest. the truth is, you're never going to fit a child safety seat in the back of that tiny car anyway. the four doors are much roomier." the woman informed me.
my eyes widened, "you think i'm pregnant?" i said a little louder than i should have said.
she chuckled, "the way you've been gagging at smells? nausea? back pain? tender boobs? it seems like a case of the baby blues."
i was a little shocked. "i mean, i've definitely noticed the nausea, and the sudden aversion to smells, but i've never even considered the idea of being pregnant..."
the saleswoman put her hand on my shoulder. "well, you might want to consider investing in a pregnancy test..." she smiled. "in the meantime, have you thought about a four door car?"
i shook my head as i tried to focus on car shopping instead of my new shocking realization. "yeah, i guess you're right. do you have any suggestions?"
she began leading me towards cars that were a bit more family friendly. "well, here at manhattan auto sales..."
MIRANDA'S APARTMENT
new york, new york
12pm
i knocked on miranda's apartment door. miranda answered the door a few seconds later, holding a sleepy brady in her arms. she smiled at me as she opened the door. "hey, come in."
"today, i bought two important things." i told her.
miranda led me into the living room and sat down on the couch, still holding brady.
"really? and what are those two things you bought?" she asked, settling brady on her lap.
"for starters, i got a car." i said as i held up my lexus keys.
she smiled "finally! you've wanted a car of your own for awhile. what else did you get?" she asked curiously.
"well...i also bought a pregnancy test." i told her bluntly.
her eyes widened, and she instantly shifted brady onto the couch. she leaned forward a bit, trying to keep her volume down. "you got a what?"
"your ears aren't deceiving you, you heard right." i said with a nod, "i got a pregnancy test. i was car shopping and the saleswoman and i started talking. she basically pieced everything together for me and i started noticing all the symptoms of being pregnant. so i bought a test, just to make sure."
she sat silently for a moment, trying to process the information i had just told her. "you really think you could be pregnant?" she asked, raising a brow.
"it'd make sense. i mean, holden and i just had sex a few weeks ago." i told her.
she nodded, "yeah, well have you taken the test yet?" she asked.
"i was hoping to take it in the comfort of my best friend." i said as i held it out.
she sighed before taking the test from me. "let's do it then..." she said as she stood from the couch and began walking to the bathroom.
i followed her into the bathroom, my stomach in knots. i was a bit afraid to take the test, afraid of what the results would be.
we both stood in the bathroom, her staring down at the white test in her hand. we were silent for a few moments, we were both apprehensive.
"well, lets just pee on the damn thing and get this over with." she said bluntly.
i breathed in deeply. "you're right. you're absolutely right. i need to just bite the bullet and test it." i said as i began to unbutton my jeans.
miranda turned on the faucet on the sink in order to drown out the sound of me peeing on the test. i placed the test on the counter and waited as we both looked nervously at it, waiting for the test results.
we both stared at it for ages, watching the white stick intently. the wait seemed like ages but really it was only minutes.
finally, words appeared and i exhaled. "i think it's ready..." i muttered.
"do you want me to look first?" she asked.
i nodded, feeling way too nervous to look. "yeah, i can't look yet. just tell me what it says..." i said as i looked down at my socks.
she gently picked up the test, carefully looking at the two pink lines. "well, you're pregnant." she said as she looked back at me.
my breath caught in my throat. hearing it out loud for the first time made it all the more real.
i looked at her, my eyes wide with shock. "it's real...i'm really pregnant?"
she nodded as she walked towards me, holding onto the stick. she pulled me into a tight embrace, sensing that i needed it.
i stood there in her arms as i held her tightly, still trying to process the news.
"congratulations." she said as she pulled back, looking at me with a smile.
i smiled weakly, my emotions all over the place. "i'm excited, but scared shitless. i don't really know what to do now that i'm having a baby. and i have to tell holden..."
she gave a slight pat on my shoulder. "one step at a time. first, tell holden. then, figure out what the hell you're going to do. we'll figure out the rest as we go."
BLEECKER STREET PIZZA
new york, new york
3pm
the five of us sat around a booth eating pizza.
carrie chewed her slice of pizza, looking around at the four of us. "ugh, no offense but this is insanely quiet. can we talk about something new?" she asked, breaking the silence.
miranda eyed me and cleared her throat. charlotte who noticed the eye contact spoke up, "alright you two. spill."
i bit the inside of my cheek, not even making eye contact with the group. i felt like a deer caught in the headlights.
miranda looked at me and raised an eyebrow, silently telling me it was now or never.
i looked at them, my cheeks immediately turning flush with embarrassment. "i'm pregnant." i blurted out.
silence. no one spoke. i took the moment to look at their faces, each of them had different reactions.
carrie's mouth opened upon hearing my news, the words seemingly taking a moment to register. miranda and samantha on the other hand, seemed to process the statement quicker.
charlotte on the other hand, was still a bit confused. "what did you say?" she asked.
i swallowed the bite of pizza in my mouth before repeating myself. my nerves were getting the best of me. "i said, i'm pregnant. like, with a baby. that's growing inside me. because i had sex with holden."
carrie's mouth was still agape, her eyes wide. samantha's eyes were wide as well. "you've got to be shitting me." samantha said bluntly.
"it's weird! holden and i are back together, things are good. serious and slow, but good." i informed them. "and now i have to tell him that i'm having his child."
carrie seemed like she was in a daze. "holden's the father. you two got back together. you're pregnant. oh...my...god." she muttered the words, seemingly trying to mentally process it all. miranda on the other hand stayed calm, a soft smile on her face.
charlotte's eyes immediately turned glassy, a big smile coming over her face. with the emotions getting the best of her, she began to cry. "we're having a baby!" she yelled, clapping her hands together.
miranda smiled as she reached out and placed a hand on charlotte's shoulders, trying to soothe her. i chuckled as i looked at my emotional friend. i mean, it was a lot to process: my pregnancy. "yes, we are." i replied.
samantha was now laughing at charlotte's tearful response. "why are you crying? you're not the one who is pregnant." samantha joked.
charlotte sniffled a few times while wiping the tears from her eyes. "i know, but still. i'm just so excited!" she said, her voice cracking a bit.
i shook my head with a smile. "how do you get so emotional over me being pregnant?" i teased my friend, reaching out to take her hand across the table.
"i can't help it! i am just so excited for you and holden!" charlotte cooed.
"it's the fairy tales she grew up reading." samantha mumbled.
carrie still looked a little dazed, as if she had just been through quite the revelation herself. "wow... wow... wow." she repeated as she finally took a sip of her drink.
miranda held up her coke bottle, "congratulations, jamie."
i gave them a weak smile. "thanks guys, honestly i'm glad you all know now. now all i have to do is tell holden." i said with a sigh.
"which will be a walk in the park!" charlotte assured with a nod.
i laughed at her naiveté. her eternal optimism was admirable. "i'm pretty sure it won't be that easy. yeah, we're back together but having a kid adds a big dynamic to all of this. holden could freak out."
charlotte shrugged. "please, the guy is completely in love with you. that much is clear." she said bluntly. "he won't freak out, i'm sure."
"speaking of being completely in love. i think robert is going to propose." miranda redirected the conversation.
samantha nearly choked on her pizza at that statement. "really?" she asked, her eyebrows raised.
miranda shrugged. "i'm assuming. he's been acting weird lately. and he has been dropping a lot of hints. so, i'm assuming that an engagement is around the corner."
carrie raised an eyebrow. "well, that explains why you two have been going on all of those fancy dates lately...it's to help him build up the confidence to get down on one knee."
"how do you feel?" i asked miranda.
miranda rolled her eyes at carrie, but she had a small smile. she was clearly pleased with the prospect of marrying her boyfriend. "honestly, i think if he proposes...i'll say yes."
a round of 'ooohs' and 'ahhhhs' went around the table, including from me. "that's so great!" charlotte nearly yelled.
"calm down charlotte. i said 'if' he proposes." miranda added, giving charlotte a look. charlotte just smiled and rolled her eyes.
STREETS OF NEW YORK
new york, new york
4:30pm
carrie and i walked down the streets of new york, on our way to our respective homes. "oh my god, is that berger?" i asked carrie as i licked my vanilla ice cream cone.
she stopped in her tracks, "i look like shit. this is not my perfect outfit!" she said.
"you do not look like shit." i assured her, before being yanked across the street.
"but my hair! it's not perfect." she said franticly, taking a few glances at her hair in the window reflection as we walked.
"your hair is fine, carrie. you're over thinking it." i said as we rounded a corner onto a different street.
as we walked further down the block, my eyes widened as i saw two familiar faces. "no way..." i breathed. and sure enough, it was aidan and duncan.
my eyes went from theirs, then to the two baby carriers strapped to their chests. a small gasp escaped my lips. this was so strange. they must have heard us approaching, because they both turned to us.
"well, well, well..." duncan said as he approached me.
he was sporting his signature smirk that used to drive me insane. but now he was carrying a baby in a baby carrier. it was kind of...cute.
"hello duncan..." i said, eyeing the infant.
"can you believe she's mine?" duncan said as he played with his daughter's fingers.
i smiled as i looked down at the beautiful dark-skinned baby, her eyes wide and curious. "she is absolutely adorable, duncan. what's her name?" i asked.
duncan gave me a small smile. "her name is mia." he replied as mia babbled. "my fianceeand i adopted her a few months back."
"your fiancee?" i repeated. i wasn't expecting that. duncan was engaged and a father now. my eyebrows rose in shock.
aidan then chimed in, "and this is the man, tate." he said as he looked down at his own baby. "i call him tater because you know, he looks like one. no hair, big eyes."
i laughed at his description. "aw, tater-tot. he is adorable, aidan. you're so lucky." i said, looking down at the blue-eyed baby. mia babbled and reached out at me from her baby carrier.
"well don't laugh, but i married another furniture designer." aidan said.
"really?" carrie said.
i looked at duncan, "what about you? are you engaged to another pediatrician?"
duncan chuckled as he shook his head. "no actually, she's is a social worker. she works with struggling families. it's how we met...with the whole adoption thing."
"wow," i said.
"jamie! you have to tell them the good news." carrie exclaimed.
i raised my eyebrows at carrie. "what good news?" aidan asked.
carrie placed a hand on my stomach, "she's pregnant."
aidan and duncan's eyes went wide as they looked back and forth between my stomach and my face.
"woah, congratulations are in order then." aidan said, his eyes looking shocked as ever.
"so, who's the lucky guy?" duncan asked, his eyes trained on me.
i chuckled nervously as both men stared at me intently, waiting for a response. i fiddled with a lock of my hair. "well, funny thing. it's holden."
"holden?" duncan repeated, his eyebrows raising. "that's right, i met him a while back..." he recalled.
i nodded, still fiddling with my hair. "yeah, we actually got back together a few months ago and things are going well. the pregnancy wasn't planned but i guess we're handling it." i tried to sum up, my nervousness now really setting in from all the attention on me.
"well cathy and evelyn are inside. wanna meet them?" aidan asked, referring to their wives.
"i really have to run." answered carrie.
i nodded, "maybe another time?"
duncan nodded, his eyes on me. "maybe another time."
"bye you two." i said as i started to walk away.
as we walked in the opposite direction, carrie looked at me. "well, that was interesting."
"settled down and fathers? wow." i muttered.
carrie nodded as i continued to lick my melted ice cream, "yeah, that was a shocker. i definitely did not see that coming."
