020; THE FRIEND ZONE IS THE NEW WAR ZONE

! BAD GIRLS ! BAD GIRLS !

( a sex and the city fic )

STREETS OF NEW YORK
new york, new york
7:15pm

if you're single, there is one thing you should always take with you when you go out on a saturday night. your friends.

as i walked quickly alongside the girls, carrie spoke up. "why are we walking so fast?"

"yeah, are we in that much of a hurry for an engagement party?" samantha said from next to me.

"don't you guys want to go?" said charlotte.

miranda scoffed, "well, you see...i did until i saw this invitation." she said as she held up the invitation that read 'two souls, one thought.'

"talk about a corny invite." i said.

"it's not like danny, it's too sappy." carrie pointed out.

"my guess is that it was the bride to be's idea." samantha said with a shrug.

"ah here's one! two souls, one pushy fiancé!" miranda said with a smile.

"it's a cute gesture to express how they feel about each other!" charlotte said.

carrie dismissed her with the wave of her hand, "if two people have only one thought between them something is very wrong."

"i for one remember when danny had more than one thought and they all involved going up my ass." samantha said.

"you had sex with danny?" miranda said, completely surprised.

"he's cute, straight and we've known him for ten years...except jamie's whose never met him." samantha said as she winked at me.

"hey! she's my plus one." carrie said as she grabbed a hold of my hand.

"haven't we all had sex with him?" samantha asked.

"i almost did that one lonely night." carrie said.

"we kissed once." said charlotte.

miranda spoke, "i showed him one boob in the coat room of some party."

"why not them both?" i asked, confused as to why she only showed one.

"well, i don't know." she said with a shrug.

the four us erupted into laughter, we continued walking until we found the right building. "here it is." charlotte said, looking up at it before looking over at us, "remember, be on your best behavior."

as i walked over to the happy couple alongside miranda and carrie, danny looked over. "hey look who it is! ladies, meet my other half, hailey." he introduced.

"congratulations!" the three of us said simultaneously.

"hailey this is carrie and charlotte." he said confidently, he had butchered miranda's name. he then looked at me. "i dont think we've met."

"no, i'm jamie. carrie's plus one...and that's actually miranda not charlotte." i said.

"oh right! duh, sorry miranda. i'm just a little overwhelmed." danny said apologetically.

"couldn't remember my name?" miranda said as we walked away.

"should've shown him both of your boobs." carrie said, causing us all to laugh.

somehow miranda, carrie and i got pulled into a group where the bride to be was talking about how she met danny. "the minute we met it was perfect. i knew we were meant to be together. i could stop looking, i had found him." the woman went on and on.

"congratulations!" me, miranda, and carrie said.

"what about you guys? seeing anyone special?" the woman asked us three.

"i'm not dating anyone." carrie said simply.

i smiled and tilted my head to the side, "i have a date lined up with someone actually, so we'll see how it goes."

miranda then answered. "actually, no. but i am seeing a whole bunch of unspecial guys. that's one of the requirements to date me. are you special?" she then shook her head, "sorry move along. but if you have any unspecial friends, could you give them my number?"

the group erupted into laughter as they viewed miranda as a stand up comedian.

"i'm serious! do any of you have a completely unremarkable friend or maybe a house plant i could go to dinner with on saturday night?" miranda went on and on.

"she's hilarious." the woman said to me and carrie.

"that's why we keep her around." i said as i rubbed miranda's arm.

the three of us called it a night and walked out of the building. "what the hell was that in there? i felt like your little comedy routine should have had a two-drink minimum." carrie said to miranda.

"we were standing in a group of married or engaged women." miranda pointed out. "just trying to avoid the pity party."

"and here i thought it was a cocktail party." carrie said before i spoke up.

"ladies, it's getting late and i have an eight am class tomorrow. i'll see you guys later?" i said.

"class? tomorrow's sunday." miranda said.

"it's a seminar that emmett invited me to." i said as i hailed a cab.

"seminar? are you sleeping with him?" carrie said with raised eyebrows.

"no, i'm not sleeping with him." i said, looking over at carrie. "it's about teaching and he thought it would be beneficial for me."

"oh!" both of them exclaimed at the same time.

"see, not all men are completely worthless." carrie teased.

miranda chuckled, "just most of them."

NEW YORK UNIVERSITY CAMPUS
new york, new york
7:50am

i pushed open the main doors to the building, clutching my purse as i did so. i looked around the hall and noticed other adults already filling up the seats.

i spotted emmett seated in the middle of the lecture hall as i made my way over to him. "hey." i said loudly as i stood next to him.

he looked over his shoulder at me and smiled. "hey! right on time as usual jamie."

"hey, you're the one who set the time." i said with a chuckle. "coffee?"

he held up a starbucks cup. "thought you might not have had time to get your coffee this morning. figured i'd get you a caramel macchiato."

"how do you know my coffee order?" i asked as i sat down next to him.

he chuckled a bit, "please. i have an eidetic memory."

"oh yeah, you always have been good at remembering things." i said, raising my eyebrows.

"you act as if you were surprised. i remember everything." he said, smiling playfully at me.

"well thank you, emmett." i said as i lined up all four of my pencils at the top of the desk.

just then, the professor walked over looking extremely serious. "notebooks out, people. i don't like to horse around."

quickly i pulled out my notebook, but accidentally pushed my pencils. i gasped and looked below us, seeing the pencils were out of reach in this seminar.

then emmett handed me his pen, his only pen. "what about you?" i whispered.

he shrugged, "i won't need it, i can listen."

i smiled and was about to protest, but the professor cleared his throat. "save the chatter for after class, thanks."

i quietly thanked emmett as i started taking notes as the professor began his seminar.

after the two-hour seminar the professor had finished. i packed up my notebooks and smiled at emmett. "that wasn't too bad!"

"yeah, it was much more interesting than most seminars i've been to." he said as he stood up from his chair.

"i believe this belongs to you." i said as i handed him his pen back.

he chuckled, "that's okay, you can keep it."

i smiled as i put the pen back into my bag. "you sure?"

"yeah, what's mine is yours." he said with a wink.

"you want to grab a bite to eat?" i asked him as we started walking towards the exit.

"yeah, i didn't have time to eat breakfast this morning so i'm a little hungry." emmett said as we walked into the hallway.

"well, you're just like me then. i forgot to eat breakfast today too." i said as i adjusted my bag on my shoulder.

we went over to a diner not far away from the university and decided to split a plate of waffles. we spent an hour talking over a variety of different topics, the conversation flowing as naturally as it used to when we were in college together.

we split a taxi back to my house, we sat in the backseat together. "i forgot how much i enjoy your company." i said with a laugh.

"oh yeah, what makes you say that?" emmett asked as he chuckled.

"it's just...it's nice to be around a guy who's nice and easy to talk to in a long time." i said with a smile as i looked over at him.

he nodded, "it's good that we rekindled our friendship. i never knew how much i miss having you as a friend."

"a friend?" i replied, slightly in disbelief by the blatant friendzoning.

he chuckled some and smiled, "yeah..a friend. is that surprising?"

"uh huh. because here i thought we had a connection." i said, playing with the hem of my cardigan.

"you thought we had a connection?" he asked, almost surprised that i felt that way.

i turned my upper body to look at him, "yeah, i thought there was a connection. i guess not."

"i mean there was a connection, but just a friendship connection." he said, avoiding my eyes.

the taxi pulled up to my brownstone, coming to a stop. i looked over at emmett before unbuckling my seatbelt. "that will be $10.50."

"i got it." emmett said as he pulled his wallet out of his back pocket and handed cash to the driver.

i gave him a small smile before getting out and grabbing my bag. "thanks, again, for the pen."

he smiled back, "anytime."

i shut the door and watched as the taxi drove off. i walked up the steps to my brownstone, taking my keys out of my bag and sticking them into the lock.

CAFE CAFE
new york, new york
11am

"his friend? he called you his fucking friend?" miranda said in disbelief after i shared with the group what happened.

"i got friendzoned." i said with a sigh.

carrie shook her heard, "that my friend...i call a war zone, not a friend zone."

i took a sip of my coffee, "he made it very clear he saw me as nothing more than a friend."

"maybe he has his eyes on someone else." samantha suggested.

i looked at charlotte who had been extremely quiet, only sipping away. "what's on your mind?" i asked her.

she looked up and placed her coffee down on the table. "sorry, i was just thinking." charlotte replied apologetically.

miranda's eyes went down to charlotte's fingers where a diamond ring was placed on her ring finger. "charlotte! what is that blinding me?"

"oh!" charlotte exclaimed as she realized all of us were looking at her hand.

"is...is that an engagement ring?" i asked carefully. "did dakota propose?!" i asked with a big smile.

she blushed, her whole face lighting up as she nodded and smiled. "he hasn't proposed to me, but i found it in his things and... i just had to try it out." she said giddily.

"you stole your boyfriend's engagement ring?" carrie blurted out.

charlotte nodded enthusiastically, a giddy smile on her lips. "i did. i couldn't help it!"

"i can't believe you actually stole his ring." i said with a chuckle. "when do you think he's going to propose?"

charlotte smiled again and started twisting the ring around her finger. "soon is my hope. i would like a spring wedding and then maybe children soon after that."

"well honey, you haven't been together for that long." carrie pointed out. "how long has it been?"

"five months." charlotte said quietly, still playing with the ring.

carrie choked on her coffee, "five months?! and you're already dreaming about planning a wedding?"

"that's charlotte though. she's still living in fairy tale world." samantha said with a laugh.

charlotte playfully smacked samantha's arm, "oh shush. i have traditional values."

miranda chuckled and took a sip of her coffee, "traditional values, or just the dreams of a little girl who wants prince charming?"

"look- dakota and i experienced love at first sight. as soon as we saw each other-" she paused and looked around, "right here actually, we both knew...so i'm very hopeful that he'll pop the question soon." she said, clearly believing her words. even i believed them after hearing the way dakota speaks about her.

samantha rolled her eyes, "love at first sight? are you still reading those romance novels?"

charlotte blushed and glanced down at her ring again. "oh shut up samantha. and i don't read them anymore, i just have a healthy and positive outlook on love. you should try it sometime."

"healthy and positive...or delusional?" carrie asked with a smirk as she took a swig of her iced coffee.

i chuckled to myself as charlotte scowled at carrie. "i am not delusional thank you very much. i have found the man i am going to marry and have a long beautiful life with."

"yeah you have!" i sided.

"thank you jamie. at least someone agrees with me." charlotte said with a huff as she looked at carrie and samantha.

samantha raised her hands in defense, "listen i hope for your sake it works out. my heart just can't help but be skeptical of these things."

"that's because you're jaded, and haven't given love a chance." charlotte said, folding her arms across her chest.

just then jemma walked in with a smile on her face. "what a surprise." i said to my niece as she approached the table.

jemma leaned forward and threw her arms around me, rocking me side to side. "remember how much you love me?" she said.

i laughed as i wrapped my arms around her, hugging her. "of course i do." i said as i pulled away. "how could i forget?"

jemma pulled away from me and reached her hand up to push her hair out of her eyes. "can i ask you something?"

"sure. what's up?" i said, leaning back in my seat.

"can i have a friend over tomorrow night at your place?" she asked me, looking at me with her big puppy dog eyes.

i narrowed my eyes. "who is this friend of yours?" i asked carefully.

jemma rolled her eyes, "oh my god. you really are like a mom." she said. "his name is luca. and he's really cool, i promise. i met him at this nyu tour the other day. please!"

"why not at your place? maybe i'm going crazy but i remember you, me and your dad going apartment shopping." i said jokingly.

jemma groaned like the typical teenage girl who didn't understand why things couldn't go her way. "ugh, please aunt jamie?"

"you should let her!" charlotte quipped as she winked at jemma.

i looked over at charlotte, giving her a knowing look. samantha smirked, "come on jamie, let her have a cute boy over."

"fine, fine. but i'll be there, maybe i'll be upstairs and leave you two to it...but i'll be there." i said.

"oh my gosh... THANK YOU THANK YOU!" jemma exclaimed as she wrapped her arms around my neck again. "you're the best aunt ever!"

"i'm also your only aunt." i pointed out.

"yes, but still the best." she said as she squeezed me tight.

"well then." i said as she pulled away. "i guess i'll get to meet this cute boy of yours."

"oh my gosh!" jemma said excitedly. "he's the cutest guy ever!"

charlotte chuckled, "you sound like a little sixth grader with a crush."

jemma waved her hand to dismiss charlotte's comment. "i've gotta run, but good seeing you guys!" she said as she walked towards the door before speaking again, "cute ring by the way." she said to charlotte as she winked.

charlotte gasped and hid her ring.

"oh to be a young girl with a crush..." miranda said with a sigh.

"oh i remember the good old days of having crushes." carrie said with a smirk.

"my first kiss sneezed on me right after we kissed." miranda said as she held up her coffee before taking a long sip.

"ick!" charlotte yelped.

"my first highschool love was jeremy, he even wrote in my yearbook that he would always love me." carrie said with a smile.

"and where is this jeremy now?" samantha asked.

carrie shrugged, "last i heard he was married and in denver."

"my highschool lover was holden. he was the school golden boy, cute, smart, hockey player..." i described.

"a ten all across the board." samantha said.

"mhm," i hummed.

"and what happened? why aren't you married to holden?" charlotte asked.

i laughed, "well...let's just say he had a different girl every day of the week."

miranda widened her eyes, "oh my god. he cheated on you?!"

i shook my head. "no! no! he'd never, we weren't ever serious...i was just the girl."

"oh!" charlotte exclaimed knowingly. "the girl who he goes to when he's lonely."

"yes that's exactly it." i said, "he'd always come to me when he had a rough break up or was lonely at night...but there wasn't anything weird going on. we'd honestly just talk."

"so what? you were the 'friend girl?'" samantha said.

"god, why am i always getting friend zoned." i said as i cupped my face.

"wait...hold up. are you saying you two never..." carrie started and trailed off.

"oh no, we kissed many times." i said with a sly smile. "i just never let him get further than that."

carrie rolled her eyes, "oh so you teased him. now it makes sense why he was so wrapped around your finger."

"maybe i did tease him a little." i said smugly. "but he didn't complain about it."

samantha shook her head, "you could've had that boy begging on his knees for you."

"and i did." i said, sipping my coffee. "he'd do anything i asked of him." i then got up, "now, if you'd excuse me...i now have to clean my place for a date that's being held there tomorrow."

"have fun cleaning!" charlotte called out as i stood from my chair.

"make sure everything is extra spotless!" carrie added, "young guys notice EVERYTHING."

i nodded, "and if anyone would like to hangout with me while those two lovebirds are in my living room. let me know."

"of course, i'll stop by!" samantha said with a smile.

"me too." miranda said.

"i'd never turn down an invitation to hangout." charlotte said as she fiddled with the ring.

i turned to look at carrie, "you in?" i asked.

carrie smiled, "of course i'm in."
