JAMIE'S BROWNSTONE HOME
new york, new york
5:30pm
after a long work's day i found myself sitting on the steps of my brownstone just watching as the world moved in front of me. i was eating a sandwich in my own little world.
i was so far in my mind that i almost didn't hear the sound of footsteps walking towards me.
"jamie?" i then heard a very familiar male voice say.
i looked back to see my brother, dakota. "yeah, it's me.."
"how are you doing?" he asked as he looked over at me.
"i'm doing great!" i said truthfully. "how are you doing, big brother? did you finalize the divorce while i was in montauk?"
"the paperwork is being finalized, yes." he said as he watched a pigeon fly across the street, "i honestly couldn't care less. it's been a long time coming."
i nodded. "that's amazing news dakota! how'd you get her to agree?"
dakota shrugged, "i'm a persuasive guy, what can i say?" he then leaned back against the steps and looked over at me, studying me. "so, are you dating that doctor officially now?" he asked curiously.
"we've been seeing each other, but we're not labeling anything...everything has been smooth sailing though." i informed him.
"hmm..." he murmured. "he seems like a nice, well put-together man. a stark contrast from your ex." he said, a small hint towards my ex, who had a knack for cheating.
"i really don't want to talk about nathan." i said with the roll of my eyes. "so how long are you and jemma staying at my place? i know you wanna move out here so maybe we can take you house hunting."
"we'll be out of your hair by the weekend." he said. "i've just been going to interviews here in new york, so if i go back to connecticut i won't be able to continue that."
we then stopped for a few minutes as a few other people walked by, some saying greetings.
"you look happy." he then added, his eyes looking over my face.
i blushed slightly at his comment and pushed him gently. "shut up." i said with a laugh. "i am happy."
dakota chuckled, "yeah...you look it. this is different than how you were with nathan."
i nodded. "alright we're taking you house hunting tomorrow, okay?" i said to him.
"yeah yeah, we'll go look at some places...." he said, a small yawn escaping from his mouth. "ugh, i'm exhausted."
"you know where your room is." i said as i got up from the stairs, headed for the front door.
FUSION
new york, new york
8pm
later that night, i met with the girls for a late dinner at one of carrie's friend, adeena's new restaurant, fusion. fusion was restaurant which their specialty was a mingling of trendy food with soul food.
we sat at a booth and drank our drinks as we all ate the same meal, poached salmon with okra. i was eating my meal peacefully when charlotte explained how her date was a terrible kisser.
we were halfway into our meal when charlotte made a horrified facial expression, "i had the absolute worst date, i'm still scarred by it." she said.
samantha placed her drink down, "what on earth happened?" she asked.
"when he kissed me goodnight...he like-" she covered her face with her hands. "he licked my face!"
"ew!" the girls and i all said at the same time.
"how do you think i felt? his tongue actually licked my teeth." charlotte said.
samantha shook her head, "i don't get it. did he wanna fuck you or floss you?"
"i have never shuddered harder in my life..." charlotte said, shaking her head in disgust. "it was honestly a nightmare." she said as she took a bite of her food.
i gagged slightly, "bad kissers are the worst."
"the worst. when it comes to the worst, they're at the top." carrie said.
"he has these sweet little lips, i thought he would be a good kisser." charlotte said.
"see, that's the scary thing! you can never tell, they look totally normal." i chimed in.
"until their pointy tongue is darting in and out of you." miranda said whilst doing a motion with her hand.
the girls and i all groaned in disgust, "stop! stop!" i screeched. "i have to live for the rest of the day with that mental image!!"
"i'd say get that thing out of my mouth, put it in a can and take its lazy ass home." samantha said.
"you'd dump a guy because of a bad kiss?" charlotte asked, seemingly shocked.
"you have to." samantha and i said at the same time.
"maybe we can work on it! practice makes perfect." charlotte said with a hopeful look in her eyes.
"no, no, no. dump him. a bad kissed is non-negotiable." samantha urged.
i nodded in agreement, "a bad kisser is one thing i will not have."
"agreed!" carrie said. "once a bad kisser, always a bad kisser."
just then a woman in a chef's apron walked over. adeena williams, carrie's friend. she was carrie's newspaper's former food editor along with the chef and proud owner of this very restaraunt.
"so, poached salmon with okra." the woman said.
we all exclaimed as we said our little remarks on how wonderful it was.
"trust me, this time next year, okra will be the new edamame." adeena said.
then another man walked over, "hey sis, we're leaving. you wanna come say goodbye?" he said to adeena.
"everybody, this is my successful brother who brings me tons of that juicy music industry business." she introduced us as we all said our little hellos. "okay listen. i gotta go but i'm sending over dessert." she said.
"no!" carrie pleaded.
"pecan and praline pie!" adeena said as she and her brother walked away.
"yes!" carrie pleaded as the lady walked off with the wave of her hand.
"ugh, can we all be her?" i said before taking a drink of my wine.
we all chuckled at the remark.
"i think she's my hero, the amount of confidence she has walking around as a successful chef just makes me want to quit my job and become a chef." i said.
charlotte shook her head, "i'm still stuck on her brother. the amount of money he has has to be illegal."
"speaking of brother's, i have to take mine apartment hunting...does anyone know of a good real estate agent?" i asked the group.
samantha smiled and looked at me, "actually i do."
i looked at her curiously, "oh really?"
"yeah! he's great and very easy on the eyes...i can set something up for you and your brother to meet him tomorrow?" she said.
the girls all smirked and nodded, all silently saying yes.
i sighed before smiling, "you know i'm not worried about how he looks...i'm content with duncan."
samantha raised her eyebrows, "i can have you meet him for coffee or at his office to go over the wants and needs or not. your choice." she said, slightly annoyed that i dodged it.
i rolled my eyes, "fine, i'll meet him at his office. i'm sure he'll be nice."
"i know he will....he's super professional." samantha assured me. "you're gonna wanna meet him here." she said as she wrote down an address on a napkin. "and he'll be expecting you and your brother."
"are you sure it'll be okay this late in advance?" i asked.
she nodded. "after i hooked up with him, he owes me something." she said as she handed me the napkin.
CARRIE'S APARTMENT
new york, new york
1pm
the next day, i was at carrie's place as the school i worked at had early dismissal at 12. we had her coffee cup filled with fresh coffee and a coffee table full of fresh fashion magazines ready to rest and look
through them when there was a knock on the door.
carrie groaned and walked to the door, only to see her friend, stanford. "have you seen the new york times style section?" he asked.
"you know i can't handle hard news before five," she said as she walked back to the living room space where i still was. "stanford, meet jamie. jamie, meet stanford." she introduced.
"hello stanford." i said as i waved at him.
stanford walked over to me and gave me a small wave. he was a almost bald man with a small glasses.
"hi, it's good to meet you too." he said warmly. "there's a beautiful man downtown selling beautiful furniture, we're going." stanford said looking between carrie and i as carrie lit her cigarette.
"stanford, i got a whole afternoon planned with australian vogue. i'm not just gonna drop everything to go downtown and see some cute guy." carrie said as she sat down next to me.
stanford then held out the newspaper with the man's photo for us to see. "he's straight."
"i'll get my purse!" carrie said.
FURNITURE STORE
new york, new york
2pm
"all these people with nothing better to do than ogle some lowly craftsman? pathetic." carrie said.
"i can respect it." i said honestly as we walked through.
"what, you like tradesmen?" stanford asked as we looked around at the crowd of people staring at a man sanding a desk in the corner.
"well, i perfer doctors." i stated.
"you better." i heard a voice say, a texan accent i knew all too well.
i turned around to see duncan and immediately wrapped my arms around him in a hug, though it may have been more forcefully as i accidentally bumped him into a table.
he chuckled and wrapped his arms around me. "woah, slow down. you act like you haven't seen me in ages." he said before pressing a kiss on the top of my head.
"it's been like two days, i missed you!" i pouted as i pulled away and took a step back to look at him. "what are you doing here?" i asked.
"i was looking for some new furniture for my place, so i stopped to see how it was going here. and lo and behold....i find my girl fawning over a tradesman." he said, a smirk on his face.
"fawning over a tradesman? a pediatrician is more like it." i said.
"well i'll have you know that i know the owner pretty well. so he'd tell me if you even tried anything." he said jokingly.
i rolled my eyes playful and slapped him on the shoulder, "ha-ha you're hilarious." i said.
just then i looked over to see stanford flirting with another guy while carrie's leg was being humped by a dog.
"thank god rufus doesn't do that." duncan said as i walked over to carrie, removing the dog from her leg.
then a man come over in an all denim outfit as he playfully moved the dog. "hey pete!"
"you should get him a chew toy or something." i said as i felt duncan's presence behind me.
the man chuckled and shook his head, "he chewed right through all his other toys. i have to find one that's stronger." the dark haired man said.
i looked up at duncan who was just looking at the man. "carrie, jamie this is aidan shaw. the owner of this place." duncan introduced us.
"it's good to meet you." i said as i extended my hand to him and he shook it firmly.
"it's good to meet you too." he said as he looked at me for a moment.
before i could say anything, carrie spoke up, "carrie? more like humiliated." she said referring to her name.
"it's my fault. i shouldn't let him run loose in the store." aidan said as his gaze was trained on carrie.
i watched as the two had a stare off, it was obvious they liked each other. "duncan? let's look for your furniture, yeah?" i said.
duncan and i walked away from the pair and started looking around. the crowd of people had thinned out significantly, but it was still quite a few people around.
i was looking at some drawers when i felt duncan's arms wrap around me from behind. "i like you in yellow." he said against my neck.
i bit down on my bottom lip slightly at the chills that shot through my body as he spoke against my neck.
"do you now?" i asked him, my voice sounding breathier than normal.
he hummed against my neck. "i do." he said, his lips now trailing my jawline.
i closed my eyes and leaned my head back against his shoulder. "this could count as public indecency." i muttered breathlessly as his lips continued to my neck.
duncan planted a kiss on my neck before pulling back slightly. his arms still around my waist. "alright, alright allllright i'm done." he muttered against my skin.
after a decent amount of time spent walking around the furniture store searching for the 'perfect' pieces for duncan's apartment, we had decided on a few things to look at and he put a down payment on.
i looked around for carrie and stanford who i couldn't find, then aidan walked over. "man, that carrie great." he said to duncan.
duncan chuckled in agreement, "you like her, huh?" he said.
aidan shrugged, "who wouldn't like her?" he said. "she sweet, funny, cute..."
"hey, where'd she go?" i asked him.
"oh she said she had to meet up with her friends for lunch." aidan said as he pet his dog.
"oh shoot!" i said as i looked at a nearby clock, "i'm late...i gotta go meet with them then do house hunting with my brother." i said as i turned to duncan. "see you soon?"
duncan smiled and pulled me against his chest, "of course." he said before leaning down and kissing my forehead. "stay safe, babe." he said against my skin.
CAFETERIA
chelsea, manhattan, new york
3:15pm
i sat down at the table where charlotte, miranda, samantha and carrie were already seated. "sorry i'm late...duncan was at the furniture store and- why didn't you tell me you left?" i said looking at carrie.
carrie sipped some of her water and shrugged as she placed the glass back down, "i had to go talk with aidan." she said with a dreamy look in her eyes. but she quickly shook her head to clear her thoughts. "how was the shopping?" she asked me.
i sat down beside her and took a drink of my tea. "it was good. duncan's new furniture will be in next week." i said.
miranda chuckled, "did he find someone to break it in for him?" she teased.
i rolled my eyes but blushed slightly, "no he didn't."
charlotte looked at me, "any funny stories?" she asked.
"only the story that comes from how you got that on your chin." i said looking at her black and blue chin.
"don't make fun of me. my chin hurts." she replied.
"no seriously, what happened there?" carrie said.
"remember brad? the bad kisser! i'm never seeing him again..." she said.
"wait so he did that to your chin?" miranda questioned.
then i looked up and saw jemma and dakota walking over towards the table. i told them to meet me here so we could walk over to the real estate agent's office.
"he practically raped my chin!" charlotte exclaimed, causing some attention from others eating nearby and even from dakota and jemma who stood by the table.
"okay, calm down." carrie said, trying to keep charlotte quiet.
as dakota and jemma walked over, i could hear charlotte still talking about her experience. she clearly hadn't noticed she was drawing attention. "he was all teeth and i swear i saw some tongue! he-"
"charlotte, shut up." samantha suddenly said, cutting her off.
she shook her head. "no! i will not shut up, you guys didn't have to get your face sucked!" she said before noticing dakota's tall stature in front of her. she quickly silenced herself and brought her hand to her chin, hiding the bruise. "sorry," she said quietly.
dakota was looking at her with a raised eyebrow, but his face was otherwise expressionless. it was hard to know what he was thinking, but he was either annoyed by charlotte's comment or trying to not laugh.
"ladies this is my brother, dakota...and his daughter, jemma. and guys this is miranda, samantha, carrie and charlotte." i introduced them.
everyone greeted dakota and jemma, one more shy than others.
dakota greeted the girls as well, "nice to meet everyone." he said as he nodded his head.
he hadn't even looked at me yet. probably because he's more focused on charlotte at the moment.
everyone sat down and got comfortable as dakota took a seat beside me. i reached over and pinched his side.
he quickly looked at me before looking at charlotte, "so i didn't know kissing was this rough nowadays." he said in a dry sarcastic tone.
"it isn't!" charlotte responded almost instantly, a look of annoyance crossing her face.
the rest of the table was watching the interaction with slight amusement.
dakota chuckled and shook his head. "just messing with you." he said.
charlotte's face reddened and she tried to save face. "oh..."
"excuse his very dry and sarcastic humor. he's been like this since he was a kid." i said.
dakota's face was still neutral, but he shook his head at me. "no, let her figure it out so i get free entertainment."
"alright mr. comedian you ready to go?" i said as i got up.
dakota nodded and looked at jemma who was sitting across from him, "come on kiddo." he said.
charlotte's face had softened a bit when she realized that dakota was messing with her, but she still looked slightly embarrassed.
charlotte watched as dakota and the rest of us headed towards the exit, she could only catch his retreating back. "bye." she said quietly, hoping that he didn't hear her.
dakota was still walking out without even looking back, "see ya." he said casually.
as i walked down the street with jemma and dakota to the real estate office, dakota looked at me with a smirk. i rolled my eyes, knowing that smirk all too well. "what now?" i said.
"nothing." he said innocently.
"liar." i said with a chuckle. i had known him long enough to know what he was thinking.
he put his hands up in mock surrender. "alright i'll tell you. you have a friend who clearly likes me." he said.
i stopped walking and looked at him, "who?"
"that charlotte girl. she was staring at me the entire time." he said, a smirk on his face.
"she was embarrassed because you made a fool out of her." i said.
dakota shrugged as we continued walking. "did i really make a fool out of her?" he asked. i rolled my eyes at him and we were quiet for a moment before he spoke again. "she was cute though."
i looked at him with a raised eyebrow. "oh yeah? you like her?" i mused.
he chuckled and shook his head, "i didn't say that. just said she was cute."
"yeah, but you like her." i teased.
EAST REALTY COMPANY
new york, new york
4:15pm
the real estate office was spacious and modern with high ceilings. large bright windows gave plenty of natural light and allowed you to see outside into the city.
as we headed over to the front desk, the woman behind it looked up at us. "hi, how can i help you?" she asked.
i smiled and said, "hi. i have an appointment for 4:30, it was set by samantha jones...i'm jamie boyd." i said.
"ah yes, miss boyd." the woman said as she typed at her computer. "we're just setting up a few things and your realtor will be right out." she said.
we thanked her and sat down, looking around the office. i heard dakota let out a whistle. "these places are expensive." he muttered.
"you're acting like you don't have the money." i muttered back.
he chuckled and shrugged, "just because i have it doesn't mean it's not expensive." he said.
just then, a blonde woman wearing a simple business dress, a smile on her face approached us. she stopped in front of us and extended her hand to me first. "hi, i'm julie." she said.
i reached out and shook her hand as dakota got up and she greeted him and jemma too.
"i'm not your real estate agent, but he's in a meeting and asked me to get some simple information about what you're looking for." julie said as she led us to an office space.
julie sat down at the desk in the office space and ushered us into the chairs across from her. we sat down as she started typing on the computer.
"so, what are you looking for in a place?" she asked.
i looked at dakota to answer, it was going to be his home after all. "i need two bedrooms, preferably in a nice area." he said.
julie nodded and typed on the computer. "anything else? pets? smoking?" she asked.
"nope, i don't have any pets and no smoking." he said.
"alright, what's your budget?" she asked.
dakota shrugged, "money's not really an issue. though i can't imagine it would get too expensive since it's just a two bedroom." he said.
julie tapped a few keys on the keyboard and looked up at us. "okay, how long are you wanting the lease to last?"
"um, probably a year." dakota responded.
julie nodded and typed a few more things on the computer before looking back up at dakota, "are you going to need furniture?" she asked.
"yeah," he said. "just some basics like a couch, beds, dining table, stuff like that."
julie nodded again as she wrote a few more things down before saying, "i'll have the real estate agent start looking at some options and he'll call you when he's found a few to show you."
we thanked julie and said goodbye before walking out of the office with a few pieces of paper with the information we had given her.
"that went smoothly." i said, folding up the pieces of paper.
dakota nodded as we walked out of the real estate office. "yeah, shouldn't take long."
jemma looked up at the sky, noticing just how long we had been in the office. "it's getting late. i'm hungry." she groaned.
i chuckled and checked the time on my watch. it was getting late.
dakota looked down at her. "alright, how about a pizza?" he said.
