\\Gon (POV)\\
I was running, endless stairs, breathing heavily as I searched for something. For someone.
Finally when I saw the top, someone was standing there. And even thought I've never seen him before, I knew who the person was. He was covered in fog, which of course limited my vision of seeing him. But I really did knew what who he was.
A smile grew in my face as I reached for him, but then suddenly the stair brooks collapsed as I fallen in the mindless fog...
"Aaaah!" I yelped sitting up in a bed.
I breathed in hardly swallowing the air. It was just a dream. Nothing more...
"Gon!" I heard a familiar voice. I lifted my head, as two warm hands embraced me tightly. Pink streaks of hair flown in face as I recognised the familiar smell of sunflowers.
"Annya?" I asked as the girl leaned back. A relieved and sad expressions mixed in her face. Her blue aqua eyes looked at me, as I smiled.
"I'm so glad your ok..." she mumbled, again hugging me.
"Eh? Why wouldn't I be ok?" I asked as she her grip tighten.
Suddenly I've heard I book clap as I looked over Annya's shoulder to see mister Satotz with a book in his hands.
"Oh good! Your awake now," he said. Annya again leaned back as she fallen from the bed and sat on the ground.
"Where am I?" Was the first thing I asked.
"In a waiting room, that is next to the arena, for the final phase," Satotz said putting his book away. "Alrighty then," he then lifted the chair he was sitting in and moved close to me, as Annya also stood up from the ground as sat on the edge of the bed.
"Oh right..." memories flashed before my eyes. "I was in the middle of Hunter Exam!" I said touching my broken arm.
Annya had seen to notice it, as she smiled and pat my leg. "It'll be fine Gon. It's just broken, overall."
"Speaking of it," Satotz interfered. "The break was clean, in fact that limb will be even stronger once it heals."
Annya nodded with reassuring smile. That's right... I fought with Hanzo and he broke my arm.
"In any case, congratulations on your win, Gon," mister Satotz brought out his hand to me. I tensed. But this was...
"Mister Satotz," I started. "I..."
"You can," mister Satotz cut me off. He took my good hand as he put it in his and shook it. "Just as someone who has failed the Hunter Exam, can no longer pass. Someone who has passed the Hunter Exam, can no longer fail. What you make of it entirely up to you."
"Gon," Annya smiled at me. "If you feel like your still not unqualified, I will help you to become qualified. Whatever happens. You can burn the license, or throw it away. But you will always stay Hunter." She rubbed my cheek. "No matter what."
"Yes," Satotz nod. "It's because, Gon you officially did pass the Exam. And no one who passes it, are ever allowed to retake it."
"Not even you," Annya laughed petting my hair as I giggled at her touch.
"Due to the efforts of our predecessors, professional Hunters are treated quite well. As a result, there is no end to applicants seeking a license for the worst intentions," Satotz said taking a black book like thing with Hunter emblem on it. "If it weren't for the likes of them, we would gladly pass every one who applies, without exceptions."
I stared at the black handle as I opened the black like book. Inside was a card with Hunter symbol and a metal verification.
"Most professional Hunters value this card, even above their lives," Satotz said as I watched my card in the box like book. "All the same, it's boring more, than a silly piece of junk. I looked up at mister Satotz.
"What's important, is not the way you become a Hunter. But what you do," he said pointing at my forehead. I glanced at Annya, who was now holding a cute fluffy cat, petting her, while also smiling at him. Proudly.
"What I do, huh..." I mumbled looking back at my card. Satotz picked it up for me as he handed his hand towards me.
"Gon, you must decide for yourself when your ready to use this card."
"I know you will make the right choice," Annya smiled at me as the cat jumped over her and she fallen on the bed. She laughed lightly as I watched her expression. It was different from when I last remembered her smiling. Her smile seemed sadder somehow.
I smiled back and turned to mister Satotz as I took the license from him.
\\Annya (POV)\\
I watched as Gon examined his card as I sheepishly smiled.
"Look! I've also got one!" I said bringing out my card from my clothing. "Now we're twins!" I exclaimed waving my card.
Gon laughed at my response. Then soon again only politely smiled at the card. From his eyes I could tell he's still not ready to accept the fact he was a Hunter. And something made me believe that Hisoka might be the one to blame.
"You know, I've got a lot of help to get this far," he said glancing at me for a split moment. "And I owe a lot of people a bunch of favours! Once I paid everyone back, then I think I'll be ready."
I smiled, as I understood that it was only half true.
"Then, please allow me to honour of congratulating you once again," Satotz said, bringing out his hand for Gon again to shake it.
As Gon took Satotz hand, I ran up to them, one of my hands holding a big juicy cat. I put my hands on theirs also smiling.
"Since I'm also apart of this, I shall shake my hands with you!" I said proudly smiling as Gon laughed. Satotz only chuckled lightly.
"Thank you, mister Satotz, Annya!" Gon smiled brighter. His smile vanished as he seem to have realised something. "Wait, what happened to the other applicants?" He asked.
My smile faded so quickly that you could think it was never there. I looked away from Gon as I sat on the edge of the bed, petting the huge kitty.
"The Exam's still going on, right?" Gon asked glancing at me and Satotz.
Satotz himself narrowed his eyes. "Oh no. The Exam has already ended."
Gon leaned back. "Seriously?"
"Yeah," I sight. "You've been out for almost the entire day, Gon."
His eyes widened in surprise. "The entire day?"
"The others who passed are completing a breath break. Which you will be joining later," Satotz sigh.
"Who ended up failing?" Gon asked. I froze as my looked down trying to control my emotions.
Satotz stared. "It was..."
Memories of blood and those crazy blue eyes flashed through my memory. I remembered the cold touch of a white haired boy, as my breath got intense.
"Killua."
I hid my face in my kneecaps as the big cat ran off. Gon gasped.
"Killua failed?" He asked surprised by the answer. "But why?"
I fully closed my eyes. I couldn't hear what Satotz was saying, as I drifted into my mind...
———
I watched as dark suited men surrounded Gon, ready to carry him out. Meanwhile Hanzo and Chairman Netero had a conversation to if Gon passed or not.
"Whenever he wakes up, he'll probably decline his advancement," Hanzo said.
"He's right. Sounds like something Gon would do," agreed Leorio, next to me and Kurapika.
I sight. "I'm pretty sure your right..."
"Only one person fails this round, right?" Hanzo asked as I watched Gon being carried out. "So if Gon is disqualified, then wouldn't that make the rest of our fights completely meaningless?" He and the Chairman looked at each other in tension.
"You've no need to worry," Netero advanced. "Gon has certainly passed. Nothing he says or does can change it now."
Leorio, Kurapika and me let out deep sights of relief.
"As a matter of fact, he could even throw a fit and kill me where I stand! But we still wouldn't be able to revoke his license," Netero said in his casual tone.
"Yes, I see," Hanzo replied. He then turned and walked away.
"So why?"
I glanced at the voice to see Killua with a frown on his face.
"Why'd you let him win?" Killua asked.
Hanzo stopped in his track glancing at Killua. "What did you say?"
"You didn't have to kill him. With your skills, you could've made him surrender," Killua narrowed his eyes. "Somehow."
I gulped at Killua's presence. He was really in tense. Is he still bad for being lower than me and Gon?
Hanzo along with others stared at the white haired boy until Hanzo fully turned to him. "I expect when I torture someone. My victim will despise me for the rest of their lives. It's more affective and less stressful," Hanzo said his eyes closed. "When your in pain, your eyes show a bit of hostility towards the person responsible. Even with the extensive training and discipline, that sign of rage is difficult to surpass. But Gon's eyes had no such look. Can you believe that? I've just broken his arm, but I could tell, just by looking into his eyes, that he already had forgotten all about it. So I guess you could say, the little guy won me over," Hanzo sight at the end. "If you need a reason why I let him live, there you have it."
I could see that Killua was flustered and confused. I walked over to him, as I touched his shoulder. He stood still.
———
After that the second battle began between me and Hanzo. It was easy to dodge his attacks but I couldn't land a hit on him. So I made up a strategy to steal all of his weapons, while he was distracted. But when I gathered them all, I didn't like it, as I thought of it as a dirty trick, and gave up on the fight.
The next round was made of Kurapika and Hisoka. They fought pretty simultaneous until Hisoka whispered something in Kurapika's ear and declared Kurapika the winner.
Next was me vs Pokkle. I didn't really want to fight him, but I eventually agreed. He tried shooting some arrows at me, one getting to my shoulder. Just on time I realised there was something in the arrows and froze my injury. But my hand was still paralysed. So I did the common trick on him.
"Thank you, for participating in a fight with me," I said politely. "But I had enough examining you, so I loose."
"I think she's taking after you, Satotz..." Menchi mumbled as she heard my attitude.
And that's how Pokkle passed.
Next match was between Hisoka and Bodoro, to which Hisoka won. Bodoro however was beaten up very badly, but refused to give in.
And then Hisoka whispered something into Bodoro's ear as well. If only I had Gon's capability of hearing...
And Bodoro surrendered. Leaving Hisoka to win.
And then... it was a match with me and Killua. I didn't even follow as I got to him. We both stood in arena. As the match started we were both quite, unmoving.
Finally I couldn't take it as I calmly walked over to him. "Are you still mad at me?" I asked. He raised his brows at me.
"Why would I be mad?!"
"I don't want to repeat it so keep in mind," I grabbed him by the shoulder. "That you are not lower than me and Gon."
We both stared at each other for a few seconds before he bursted out laughing lightly.
"Annya, sometimes you really surprise me!" He said stroking my hair. "Thanks. I'm not mad anymore," he said as I stared at him. "Either way Annya, I wasn't tending to keep this composure for long. Maybe they just did some mistake that lowered me to those people. I don't know."
"Ok then," I smiled. "So do you want to fight me? Or..."
"Nah," Killua said bringing his hands in the air. "I don't really wanna fight you. So I just surrender!"
"Hey! But then, what about..." I mumbled.
"Don't worry," he smiled. "I'll pass with the other battle. You'll see."
We stared at each other, before I smiled and we walked out of the ring.
"Hey, what were you two talking 'bout there?" Leorio said as I stood next to him and Kurapika.
"Nothing, really. Just somethings that we needed to share," I said pushing my hands behind my head. Killua was not mad at me anymore. The thought of that really eased me.
After that it was suppose to be Leorio's mach, but he insisted that it was needed for Bodoro to recover from Hisoka's given injuries. So the fight could be both sided.
So then Killua's and Gittarackur's battle was held. Killua had a confident look in his calm face. I guess he thought that he would win.
Killua stepped a closer to his opponent.
It was quite.
Then Gittarackur opened his mouth. "It's been a while, Kill."
I shot my eyebrows. 'Kill?' Does Killua now this man?
Suddenly Gittarackur started trembling as he reached out for those weird yellow things sticking out of his skin. It revealed to be needles. I frowned as Gittarackur took them one by one. Finally as he took them out his light blue hair shot in the air high and started to get longer, and becoming darker. His face also started crumbling as it changed. It almost made me sick.
As the face finally stopped changing, and the black hair was now still floating in the air, the Gittarackur stood calmly in front of Killua. As the white haired-boy's eyes widened. The black hair fallen back. It was pretty long, as it reached the man's waist.
Killua stood there in shock as my face grew with worry. Who is this man? Is he Killua's enemy or a failed to assassinate person? Confused I was.
Killua trembled as he stood in front of Gittarackur. "Big brother!..." Killua said as my eye widened with his. Brother?!
Killua was sweating as he trembled with fear. I've never seen him like this. The whole Hunter Exam... he never got scared. He was always confident and calm, a bully and a friend. I could imagine him as everything but this.
"Hey," said Illumi.
Killua gulped as he tried to calm down a little.
"He's Killua's brother?" Leorio exclaimed.
"They don't look alike... but now I can sense that they share a pretty similar bloodlust," I said clutching my hands nervously.
"It seems that those needles, where to change his appearance," Kurapika mumbled.
Tension grew in the room as the two stared at each other.
"I heard you stabbed mom and Milluki," said Killua's brother. Memory flashed before my eyes. He told me and Gon that.
"Guess so," Killua tried to smile.
"Mom couldn't stop crying," Illumi said tilting his head.
"Well who would blame her?!" Leorio groaned. "Anybody cry if their kid did that!"
"Um, Leorio-" I tried interfering.
"She was just so happy," Illumi explained, as Leorio and Kurapika faced palmed.
"Called it..." I murmured.
"She was delighted to see that her son had finally grown up. But she's concerned about you being out on your own," Illumi said. "And she asked me to go check up on you, when I got the chance. Lucky me, huh?" He said as I tried breathing normally. " I had absolutely no idea, that you wanted to be a Hunter. As for me, I came here to get a license for a job that's coming up."
"I don't..." Killua shuttered. "...actually want to become a Hunter," he said narrowing his blue eyes. "I just felt like taking the Exam."
"I see," Illumi said. "Well that's a relief, in that case I have some advice for you. Your not cut out to be a Hunter." Illumi said as Killua gasped. "You where born for one purpose. To be an assassin."
I felt as my hands began to tremble. I felt so bad for Killua. Is this was how he was raised?
"Your a puppet of darkness, devoid of passion. There is nothing you desire. Nor is there anything you wish for," Illumi said out. "As one who lives in the shadows, the only pleasure your capable of is death. Because, that's how dad and I raised you. What do you imagine that you would accomplish by becoming a Hunter?"
Killua stated. "It's true..." he mounted. "I don't really wanna be a Hunter. But... everyone wants something! Even me."
"You don't."
"Your wrong!" Killua shouted. I stared in surprise. "There is something that I really want!" From his eyes, I could tell, that this something was really important to him.
"Hm..." Illumi mumbled. "Acknowledge me. What is it that you want?"
Killua swept his breath, as he looked down at his feet. He struggled with words.
"What's the matter?" Illumi asked. "There really isn't anything is it?"
"There is!" Killua yelled as I flinched. His voice was angry, or even terrified. "I..." he breathed heavily. "Wanna be... friends with Annya and Gon. I'm, just so sick of killing people! I want to be friends with them. I want to stay with them... just to have fun..."
It felt as if a warm wind blew in my face. I stared at Killua not blinking as he glanced at me as well. Our gazes locked, and I could hear my heartbeat. As I stared at him, everything around us seemed to have disappeared. Now only me and him where standing in a warm room. Butterflies flew in my stomach as my cheeks felt a little hot. I didn't smile because I knew I would look like an idiot. And even though he didn't say anything, I knew what those blue sky eyes said.
"Impossible."
I snapped out as I heard Illumi's voice. Me and Killua both stared at the black haired man.
"You are incapable of friendship. The only thing that you can do, is see whenever you can kill him," Illumi said with an emotionless look on his face. "That is all you where ever though."
"Killua!" I tried to shout, but my voice was low and tired. He couldn't hear my voice.
"These Annya and Gon has such a radiant personalities, that you don't know how to classify them. You don't desire nor hers nor his friendship."
"No..." Killua tried to disagree.
"If you stay with them, one day you'll end up wanting to kill them on day," Illumi said as I couldn't help but glare. "You'll wonder if you can... and you'll want to find out. Because. You are, by nature a murder."
"Killua!"
He flinched as he turned to me again. Our eyes met as I pointed my finger at him. "Your such an idiot!" He face palmed. "You think that after everything we've been through, I don't already consider you my friend?"
His eyes grew.
"Yeah!" Leorio shouted from the back. "I couldn't care less if this guy's your brother, he's a worthless piece of crap! You said you wanted to be friends with Annya and Gon? Well you heard what Annya just said! She and Gon are already your friends, how do you not know that!"
Killua again flinched as if he couldn't believe those words.
"Huh?"
Killua again turned at Illumi.
"Is that true?" He asked. I kept my cool as he stared at me. I felt his dangerous aura. I can understand why Killua's so afraid of him...
"Hell yeah it's true, you stupid!" Leorio yelled.
"Oh no." Illumi said bringing his face to his palm. "That isn't good, she already considers Kill a friend?" He asked again looking at me.
I narrowed my eyes. "Yeah. Me and Gon both do," I said.
Illumi was thinking for a while. "Fine," he said. "Then I'll kill her."
My eyes widened along with everyone else's. Killua shot his terrified face, as Kurapika and Leorio grunted.
"Assassins have no use for friends. They only get in the way," Illumi said as he turned to me and started walking forward.
"Please, wait a second!" Shouted another man with a back suit, as he stood in Illumi's way. "The match is still..." he was cut off by the back haired man's needles stabbing him in the face. The man's face started cracking and he screamed in pain as my sweat dripped on the ground.
"Move out of the way," Illumi ordered as the man stepped away. He again walked towards me, as I faced him.
Then out of sudden Leorio and Kurapika stood in front of me, protecting me. Hanzo joining them.
"Oh what a pain. I need to acquire Hunter's license right now so I can do my job... but if I kill her. I'll fail, and then Killua will pass automatically," Illumi exclaimed. "Oh no... the same thing would happen if I kill Gon or leave the match!" He sight.
"That's right..." I mumbled eyeing him.
"Wait..." Illumi said. "I'll pass the Exam and then kill the both of them!" He exclaimed.
I saw how Killua started to tremble more.
"You bastard..." Leorio mounted.
"If I pass the Exam first, I can kill everyone here and still keep my license. Am I right?"
"Well," Netero mumbled. "Yes according to the rules."
"Did you hear that Kill?" Illumi asked as Killua grumbled. "If you really want to save her and Gon, your going to have to beat me."
Killua and Illumi stared at each other before Illumi started to walk over to Killua.
"Will you fight me to save your friends? You can't do it can you?" He said as I myself started to tremble. "Because deep down, your more worried about whether you can defeat me than anything else. Aren't you?" He asked.
Killua gasped as Illumi stood right in front of him. "And, you already know the answer. 'I'm not strong enough to beat my big brother', said Illumi as he took out his hand. "Remember the lesson I drilled into you? Never go up against a superior opponent."
Killua was about to backaway from Illumi before he could touch Killua's head.
"Don't move."
Killua stopped as he looked into the eyes of his brother. "Move one more inch and I'll assume the fight has begun. The same goes, if our bodies come in contact with each other. The fight starts."
I stared as Illumi held his hand only a few centimetres away from Killua's head.
"There is only one way to stop me," Illumi said. "And you know it. But don't forget. If you decide to fight me, your 'friends' will certainly die."
Killua stood in horror. "Take him out Killua! We'll protect you, Annya and Gon!" Leorio shouted. "He won't kill your friends, or you! We'll do whatever we have to do to stop him! Come on! Let him have it!"
"Leorio..." I mumbled.
Killua trembled as he and Illumi stood. His face was terrified, as it never was. I tried to make a eye contact with him, to somehow help him, but he didn't look at me.
Suddenly he bowed his head to the ground. "You win Illumi. I admit defeat."
My eyes widened as Leorio and Kurapika stumbled.
The two brothers stood still before Illumi smiled and clapped his hands. "Oh, excellent! No need for us to fight then, huh!" He said. Then bowed down and tapped Killua's shoulder letting out a chuckle. "I lied Kill. I was never going to kill Gon. Or that girl of yours," he said, as my cheeks slightly burned. "That was only a test, to see what your made of! And now I know for certain," he said as I trembled. Something in Killua's aura changed. But I couldn't tell what. Illumi then put his hand to Killua's hair and swinged down, their foreheads almost touching. "You are simply not qualified to make friends."
I widened my eyes as I stepped away from Leorio and Kurapika.
"Not that you need any."
Illumi said to Killua as I trembled, holding back from running to him and Killua. "You'll keep doing what you've always done. The job dad and I though you to do. I'll order you to take the Hunter Exam when the time is right. But not now."
I watched as Illumi leaned away and walked out of the arena. Killua following him soon after. I stepped next to him, as I touched his shoulder. "Killua..?" I asked, as he didn't turn to me. I gulped.
"I'm here, Killua."
He flinched as he turned to me. I held him by his shoulder as his expression got back to emotionless again. He turned away from me and shook off my hand.
Another round began as Leorio and Bodoro were to fight. But before something could happen, Killua disappeared from his spot next to me, and appeared behind Bodoro. My eyes grew as I saw his long nails. The nails that cut better than knifes.
"Killua, wait!-" I screamed almost running in the round...
But it was too late. Killua raised his hand and killed Bodoro. I stood still as I couldn't breath.
Bodoro's body fell on the ground as I saw Killua's fingers covered in blood. I reached my mouth. This was too much.
Because Killua failed the Hunter Exam.
———
I sat on the bed, again cuddling the big cat. I pat it's head, as Satotz was finishing the story for Gon.
"The committee disqualified Killua, though that goes without saying," Satotz finished explaining.
Gon looked furious as he grabbed me by the wrist and dragged me out of the room. I gasped at this sudden action.
"G-Gon!" I exclaimed as he stood in the doorway.
"Where is everybody?" He asked turning.
"You should lay down! Your arm is still broken!" I said as he shook his head, cutting me off.
"Please, Annya."
I looked at him, as a familiar feeling washed over me. I looked down and nodded, taking him to everybody else.
