When The Past Calls

✦✧✦

I'm building this house, on the moon
Like a lost, astronaut
Lookin' at you, like a star
From a place, the world forgot
And there's nothing, that I can do
Except bury my love for you

The brightness of the sun, will give me just enough
To bury my love, in the Moondust
I long to hear your voice, but still I make the choice
To bury my love, in the moondust

Court of Ravenia; 1003 A.D.

Aurelia shifted and tossed in her bed as her eyes stayed scrunched shut. Her face was morphed into one of sheer agony as low whimpers left her lips.

She clutched her bed covers in her fists as terrifying images ran behind her eyelids creating a painful swirl of emotions inside her subconscious.

When the horror behind her eyes got too much for the Ravena, a loud shriek escaped her throat as she sat up straight.

Her sweat covered her body in a glimmering sheath as her breaths came out raggedly.

Her chest ached in pain and it became more difficult for her to breathe. She felt her throat become constricted and her hands started to shiver violently with panic.

She tried to pour some water for herself but the pitcher suddenly seemed too heavy for her wrists as it dropped on the floor with a loud clanking.

Aurelia groaned when that clank was followed by Adonis' cries making it evident that her restlessness had woken up the infant.

With her legs wobbling and her mind still clogged with the images from the nightmare she just had, she made her way to her son's crib.

She almost shrieked at herself when she saw her crying. Warm tears stung her eyes as she tried her best to calm him down but she just couldn't gather her bearing.

"Oh, God!" She cried out throwing her head back as she tried to control her anxious mind while slowly caressing Adonis' face because she felt like her hands were shaking too much for her to pick him up.

However, her crying while trying to console Adonis was probably not the best approach.

The door to her room slammed open as Niklaus entered with a baffled expression on his face.

The state of his hair made it evident that he had been woken up from his slumber by the raven haired queen's shriek.

"Reina, what happened?" He asked immediately when he saw her state. Worry struck him hard as Aurelia turned to him and he saw her face streaked with tears. He could swear that he saw pain in her eyes that was enough to break anyone.

"Oh, Nik, oh, thank God you're here!" Aurelia breathed as she dashed to the Original who immediately placed his hands on top of her arms.

"Reina, what is it? Did someone try to attack you again?" Niklaus questioned with worry.

She just shook her head furiously as she tried to form words.

"P-please take care of Adonis right now. I'll explain everything later." She requested as she walked over and sat on the edge of the bed with her head in her hands.

Niklaus looked at her with pure concern. He had never seen her in such a vulnerable and volatile state. Whatever was troubling her mind, was enough to scare her so much that it was almost impossible for her to even breathe.

He did as she asked and immediately picked up Adonis in his arms, rocking him back and forth as he cooed lowly to put him back to sleep.

"It is alright, my little king. Go back to sleep." He whispered shifting on his feet as he placed his hand on the back of his head.

Aurelia watched the Original put her son back to sleep and felt slight relief. However, even then, her anxiety did not recede.

Her mind was clogged with memories she would rather forget and because of that, her body was refusing to function even moderately.

The blood rushing through her veins sped up and her body started to heat. Her magic tingled on the tips of her fingers as her anger caused her eyes to flare up.

She grunted and clutched the roots of her hair in frustration and Niklaus' fear for her grew wilder.

"I'm taking Adonis to Rebekah." He muttered, leaving no room for question as he sped to his sister and returned soon to help the Ravena.

"Reina, Reina, look at me." He urged as he kneeled in front of her and cupped her cheeks.

"I'm fine, I'm okay..." She croaked out.

Niklaus exhaled, "no, you are not. Look at me, Reina."

This time, the queen raised her head and finally her flaming eyes stared into his deep blue ones.

Niklaus let out a gasp when he found profound darkness and utter fear in those orbs. An emotion he had never seen on her face.

"Nik, please, please just go!" She begged, her sobs coming out much more harshly this time.

Niklaus instantly took her hands in his and shook his head. "I am not leaving you, not now, Reina." He drawled.

Aurelia just gulped and tried to cover her face again but he stopped her. He kept her hands in his and placed his finger underneath her chin.

"If you are worried about someone coming to kill you again, Reina, I-"

"I DON'T CARE ABOUT THAT!" She yelled freeing her hands as she roughly wiped at her eyes. "There are things far more horrifying than death, Nik." She mumbled in a heavy voice.

Nik looked at her questioningly before coming to sit beside her and making her look at him.

He took her hand and gave it a soft squeeze before stroking away the moisture on her cheeks.

"And I will protect you from all those." He vowed.

She looked at him with tear filled eyes. "You weren't there, Nik. You weren't here when they came." She whispered looking away.

He furrowed his brows and something in his heart told him that this was not going to be an ordinary revelation.

"Who are you talking about, sweetheart?" He asked softly. His grip tightened on her hand.

Aurelia took a deep breath and looked down at their entwined hands.

"It was five years ago. I had just inherited the throne and the kingdom was still mourning the loss of her queen. I was the first ever woman to rule without a man by my side; some nobles did not like that."

Her voice came out in quivering stutters as her emotions gripped her heart in a gut-wrenching manner.

Niklaus' fear increased with every word that came out of her mouth.

"And some rather violent factions of the kingdom stood up against me. They said I was ruining the patriarchy. Neighboring kingdoms took it as a sign to hit Ravenia when they believed it was weak.

"Someone in the palace betrayed me and let the invaders in. It was an ambush. A ploy to prove that I was unfit to rule. My enemies believed that if they could rob the royal treasure, they would prove to everyone that a woman should not be sitting on the throne." She informed.

Her expressions turned sour and tears welled up in her eyes again. She looked away from the soul-searching gaze that Niklaus was looking at her with.

"I got word of it in time. I caught them red-handed." She added. "However, the only mistake I made was not waiting for Rozarro to bring the guards. It was a wrong decision." She spoke bitterly.

"Why didn't you take Rozarro?" Niklaus asked. She just shook her head.

"I do not know what took Rozarro so long that day. All I knew was that I had to stop the robbers." She continued.

"But, sadly for me, the robbers weren't ordinary men. They were three professionally hired killers. Much stronger and powerful than me."

"You did not have your powers back then?" Niklaus questioned in confusion.

Aurelia shook her head. "I did. But I had no control. I could have burned the whole palace down." She whispered.

She then sucked in a sharp breath, "I tried to fight them. I did everything that I could before..." She suddenly stopped talking and her body shivered.

She stood up and walked away from him. Her gaze was set outside on the crescent moon.

"They got the upper hand." She breathed. "They violated me. I almost died if it wasn't for Adonis' birth mom and my best friend rushing in to save me."

"Reina, I..." Niklaus had no idea what to say. His heart was filled with anger when he thought of anyone touching her the wrong way. And what she had just revealed was much more than that.

"I was a scared little girl with powers she couldn't control and responsibilities she couldn't handle." She said in a steel voice.

"Adonis' mother dressed me up that night. She told me that to the world I was someone who could never get hurt. That I had to show them that it was wrong to ever think that they could do anything to Ravenia. And that is what I did. No one raised a finger against the kingdom again. Ever again."

"But, Reina, what about you?" Niklaus asked in a terrified voice. He had never been so angry or afraid at the same time before.

She turned back to look at him with a sharp stare. "I am a queen, Nik. I cannot be weak. I couldn't be weak. Not again. Not after that."

Her voice was steel-like but he could see how much that memory broke her still. How much she wanted to kill her culprits over and over again. How much she wanted to hear the screams of those who violated her in the worsst ways possible.

How she wanted to watch them burn again and again and again.

What he could also see was how afraid she was. She was not afraid of dying. No.

She was afraid of reliving what her nightmare had been about.

"Wait, so you two are telling me that you have no idea where my brother is?" Elijah uttered out looking at Aurelia and Adonis with a dumbfounded expression.

Adonis shook her head. "We haven't known where he was since New Orleans."

Elijah raised an eyebrow and looked at Aurelia who avoided his gaze. Adonis could see something was up but didn't comment on it.

"So, that is what you both are waiting for? To find him?" The Original asked.

"Yeah, they just told you, dumbass!" Katherine snapped flipping the page of the magazine in her hands harshly.

Elijah looked at her pointedly. "What is the point of her?" He asked Aurelia in annoyance.

Katherine slammed the magazine on the table. "For your kind information, I was the one who found out about this charade first."

The Mikaelson scoffed. "Yeah, tell that to Rebekah, darling. I'm sure her answer will differ from yours." He muttered.

Aurelia and Adonis exchanged bored expressions seeing them getting riled up again.

"Elijah, I will snap your neck, do not test me!" Katherine spat.

He reciprocated the same death glare that she was sending his way. "Well, I'd say, try it!" He retorted.

"Alright, enough!" Aurelia yelled at them. "I have seen you guys go at each other's throats for two complete days! Stop it." She scolded them.

"Either that, or go fuck each other so we can get rid of the sexual tension in this room." Adonis added earning a smack on the head from Elijah.

"Bring Caroline in here and then we'll talk about sexual tension." Katherine mumbled with a smirk as she sipped on her wine glass.

Adonis gaped at her. "There is no sexual tension between me and Care!" He shrieked.

"Oh, so it's 'Care' now?" Aurelia asked raising an eyebrow.

Adonis sputtered looking at the three with a look of disbelief before he groaned and walked out of the room.

"Whipped!" Elijah mumbled making Aurelia laugh. He smirked when he caught Katherine smiling.

Before anyone could say anything further, someone knocked down the front door.

Aurelia exchanged baffled looks with the two as they stood up and made their way to the entrance.

Damon and Stefan stood leaning against each side of the doorway with smug expressions as the actual door laid on the ground with it's hinges separated.

"Oh, look, Katerina, it's your tiny little puppies." Elijah announced with a sarcastic smile which made the Petrova glare at him.

Aurelia ignored the two as she crossed her arms on her chest and glared at the Salvatores.

"You owe me a new door." She muttered.

Damon scoffed. "You owe us an explanation."

Aurelia gave him an amused look. "Honey, I don't owe you anything." She said with a tight lipped smile.

"Tell us what you all lunatics want and we won't kill you." Stefan growled.

"Oh boy, he overestimates himself a lot, doesn't he?" Elijah asked Katherine who looked like she could be anywhere but in that situation.

She scratched her head and leaned against the wall casually. "A sordid habit." She replied.

Stefan chuckled sarcastically. "Katherine, you think you can hide behind this witch-"

"Darling?" Elijah interrupted, "this witch can kick your ass all the way to the moon and back. Don't test her." He said grinning and placing his hands around Aurelia's shoulders.

The Ravena just looked at the two Salvatores with a blank expression. "What the hell do you two want?" She questioned.

Damon and Stefan exchanged glances. "Answers. Explanations. Reasons why your freak-show of a son would kidnap Elena?" Damon questioned.

"Oh, God." Katherine mumbled.

"He did not just say that." Elijah muttered looking at the two with an unreadable expression.

"What did you just say?" Aurelia hissed.

Damon and Stefan looked dumbfounded before they dropped to their knees in pain. They grunted and yelled as Aurelia raised a finger and both of their faces were marked with a slash into their fist as blood oozed out.

"Never disrespect anyone I care about again, Damon. Or you will die in the worst possible ways." She threatened before releasing them.

Elijah smirked and patted Lia's back but raised his hands in surrender when she glared at him. He smiled sheepishly at her.

"What do you want with Elena?" Stefan growled.

Katherine groaned. "Oh, yes, it is always about Elena!"

"At least someone knows how to love truthfully." Elijah jabbed. Katherine shot him a glare and he shrugged.

Aurelia rolled her eyes at their banter. "You morons will know about what we want when we want you all to know." She snapped.

"But-"

Aurelia flicked her wrist and placed the broken door back in it's place, interrupting Stefan as she turned around and walked back inside.

"That was impressive." Elijah smirked.

Katherine rolled her eyes and followed behind the Ravena.

"So, what now?" She questioned the two.

Aurelia shook her head. "I am fucking exhausted. I am going to bed."

Elijah looked at her with confusion. "But it's five in the evening!"

Aurelia was already climbing the stairs in a drowsy state. "I don't care!" She muttered before disappearing upstairs.

Katherine jumped when she heard Aurelia's door slam shut.

Elijah huffed and walked over to the bar counter to pour himself a scotch. Katherine too looked away because of the awkwardness.

Elijah cleared his throat after gulping down the drink from the bottle.

"I had to say," he spoke up, "Celeste was a short fling, at the least."

Katherine rolled her eyes. "I don't need an explanation."

Elijah narrowed his eyes at her. "But you're still going to get it." He snapped. "Celeste was only a distraction from the fact that I had to watch Stefan Salvatore kiss you like a horny teenager on crack."

Katherine stormed over to him. "Excuse me! You know that was nothing." She spat.

"It didn't seem like nothing, Katherine."

"Elijah, I am sorry, okay? But I came back to you and then I saw Celeste and I got mad."

"Yes, I quite remember you almost tearing her hair from her skull." Elijah shuddered at the memory.

Katherine shrugged swiping the bottle from him and taking a swig from it.

"Well, feel happy that I didn't rip her head off."

Elijah shook his head. "Niklaus killed her a few weeks after you left."

That made Katherine cough. "He did?"

He nodded. "Yes, him and Adonis thought that I was getting way too invested in her."

The Petrova laughed throwing her head back. "Oh, boy, that is so hilarious. Why did I not know about this?"

"Because I told everyone not to tell you. Didn't want your ego getting larger." He smirked.

Katherine looked at him in disbelief and smacked his shoulder. "You are meaner in this century." She said before going to walk away but he stopped her by taking her hand.

He pulled her back to himself and bent his head to her ear. "Come on, Katerina. Let's not pretend that you haven't been thinking of me like I have been thinking of you." He whispered.

Katherine sucked in a sharp breath before turning around with a smirk. "When did I ever say that I didn't think of you?" She whispered circling his neck.

"You did?" He asked, seeming genuinely surprised.

Katherine shook her head with a grin on her lips. "Shut up and kiss me." She whispered placing her lips on his.

Aurelia laid on her bed looking up at the roof of her room with a frown on her face.

She missed her husband.

She needed him and it had been so long since she last saw him.

Rolling onto her side, she picked up her phone and opened it to check any messages from her Original.

Unknown
I hope you had a
good day, sweetheart.

Unknown
Text me soon. I miss you.

A smile graced her lips seeing the message as she plopped on her elbows to reply to him.

Hi, I miss you too.

Her phone instantly chimed with a message from him.

Unknown
Now that you're here,
let me tell you, I had a
marvelous day.

Oh? Who did you kill?

Unknown
How are you so sure
that I killed someone?

Aurelia scoffed and rolled her eyes as she typed back.

Darling? Really?

Unknown
Okay, fine, I got to finally
kill the ungrateful son of
a bitch who was sending out
insider information about
the firm.

I knew it!

Who was it, though?

Unknown
Jordan.

What? I kinda liked the guy.

Unknown
Well, then it is perfect
that I killed him.

Aurelia chuckled seeing the text. She was about to type something when it hit her that it might just be time to tell him of their whereabouts.

If they couldn't find him. He would surely come looking for them.

Nik, I had to tell
you something.

Unknown
What is it, love?
Did that guy from that
night try to flirt with you?
Because I'll kill him.

She rolled her eyes.

Honey? I'm trying to be
serious here.

Unknown
Oh, I am pretty serious,
darling.

We're in Mystic Falls.

Unknown
WHAT?

Uknown
What the hell are you
doing there?

Aurelia took in a deep breath to prepare herself for the next piece of information.

We found a human
doppelganger in Mystic
Falls. You can break your
curse now.
