the angel maker
Third Person's POV
One hour ago
Audrey was doing her morning routine that she always does as she doesn't have a job yet. Well she has but no one called her yet. She doesn't want to get her hopes up she was making her breakfast which consisted of what she had left in her refrigerator, as it was random, but random's good.
Just after she got done eating her breakfast, her phone rang and she immediately grabbed it and without looking she answered it, she put it to her ear as she ate the last bite of her scrambled eggs and bacon.
"Is this Audrey King?" A male voice asked as Audrey said a muffled yes as an answer. "This is Aaron Hotchner, from the BAU, regarding your position at the BAU." He says as Audrey nearly spit out her food as she got all giddy.
"Yes, hate to jump to conclusions but um, did I get the position?" She asked as she moved her plate a little.
"As a matter of fact you did, actually. Are you free today?" He asked.
"Yeah, I'm free today. I mean I was just gonna watch cheesy romance movies. But what do you have for me?"
Audrey walks into the BAU office as she looks around as she walks towards her desk, that has her name on it. She sets her stuff down, not knowing what she would be needing today, and she hears people talking as she walks towards the circle room, where everyone else was. When she walks into the room, everyone stops talking and looks at her.
"Hi, um I'm new. My name is Audrey King." Audrey says giving everyone a small smile.
"Nice to see you Audrey." Hotch says which made the woman smile back at her, as in her defense she does find him hot, but she definitely wouldn't admit it. He's her boss, but does she care? No.
"How do you know Hotch?" Was a voice that made Audrey turn and look at, it was a woman whose name was Maya. How Audrey knows her is about the Miguel Hart case a couple years ago.
"He um was friends with my grandfather, Pedro. Actually back in the day, my grandfather trained Hotch, actually." Audrey says as Hotch nods his head confirming.
"No, way. That's so cool." Said a blonde who looked about a year ish younger than her. "I'm Jennifer, but you call me JJ, and this is Doctor Spencer Reid. Whatever you do, do not call him Agent."
"What she said, hi." Spencer says as he gave Audrey a little wave which made Audrey wave back to him.
"Let's talk later, we have a case." Said Hotch as the team nods their heads before taking seats at the round table.
"Sadly the fun comes to an end." Maya joked as she sat beside Derek Morgan as JJ presents the case. Audrey sits between Spencer and Aaron.
"This is Delilah Grennan. She was bludgeoned and raped during the night at her home in Lower Canaan, Ohio." JJ says.
"Lower where?" Emily questioned.
"Small town 40 miles outside of Cincinnati." Audrey blurts out as Maya nods her head.
"Staging the body face up with the arms across the chest like that." Spencer says.
"It's a ritual." Derek says.
"There's more. Small puncture wounds on her stomach. Note the lack of blood." JJ says, as Maya scrunches her nose at hearing that.
"They were inflicted postmortem. Where there any other victims?" Maya asked.
"Kind of." JJ says, making Maya look at her weirdly, with a raised eyebrow.
"Kind of, what does that mean?" Maya asked.
"Victimology and signature match a serial killer from the same town ten years ago Six victims spanning over 10 months. He called him--" JJ says before she was interrupted by both Hotch and Audrey.
"The Angel Maker." Audrey says, as Hotch nods his head.
"I remember that case." Hotch adds.
"They also executed him." David Rossi says.
"That's right. He was put to death by lethal injection a year ago yesterday." JJ says.
"Yesterday." Emily says.
"So we're looking for a copycat?" Maya questioned.
"Honoring the anniversary of his hero's death." Hotch says.
"It says here they found semen at the crime scene. Perhaps locals will get a DNA match when they run it through ViCAP." Spencer says.
"Well, that's where it gets weird. They ran it already, and they got a match too." JJ says as this caught Audrey's attention.
"They did, that fast?" She questioned as JJ nods her head.
"Hold on, if they already have a name. Why did they call us?" Maya asked.
"You've got to be kidding me. The match they got back on the DNA is the Cortland Bryce Ryan otherwise known as the Angel Maker." Rossi says as both Maya and Audrey's jaw dropped in shock.
"What?" The two woman said in unison.
"We will talk more on the jet." Aaron says which startled Audrey as she didn't see it coming.
As the team was heading to the jet and going over the case. Audrey sits next to Hotch and Maya of course sits next to Derek.
"The Angel Maker's victims were beaten with the assailant's bare hands. Delilah Grennan was bludgeoned with a heavy instrument, maybe a hammer." Spencer says as Audrey nods her head.
"Okay, so this Unsub's a weaker guy or at least someone who perceived himself that way." Hotch says.
"So, he brought along the hammer to make certain his victim wouldn't fight back." Maya says.
"They have parachutes on board, right?" Rossi asked.
"They should It's standard on all federal air transport." Derek says.
"Maybe we can give one to the elephant in the room, get him out of here." Rossi says, as Audrey nods her head agreeing with Dave.
"That would be the elephant with the dead man's DNA." Maya says.
"Well, obviously somebody planted the semen on the victim." Hotch says as both Audrey and Maya gagged a little at hearing that.
"In the victim." Derek says.
"That's the theory." Audrey says as Spencer nods his head.
"There's another?" Maya asked as Audrey nods her head.
"Think about it, who shares the same DNA makeup of another person." Audrey starts as Derek and Hotch look at the woman confused.
"Audrey, you're not seriously floating around the idea of an evil twin, are you?" Derek asked.
"No, she's not. She's floating the idea of an eviler twin." Spencer pipes up as Audrey smiled at Spencer.
"Traditionally, the concept is a good twin and an evil twin, but in this case, it's evil twin, eviler twin." Audrey says as the team goes silent.
"Since when did you become a genius?" Derek asked as Maya nudged him, making him give her a side-eyed look.
"I read a lot." Audrey says which of course got Spencer's attention.
"Like what?" He asked her as she grinned.
"Anything really, if it's in English." Audrey says as Spencer nods his head.
"I don't really read in English that much." He admits.
"He's weird." Derek says as Maya nudged him again. "Will you stop it?"
"Nope." Maya says as Derek shakes his head.
Lower Canaan, Ohio
Once the team gets to Ohio, Audrey goes with Spencer and Hotch to the crime scene.
"Before Cortland Ryan, this town hadn't seen a homicide in over 30 years. He didn't just kill those six woman. He killed a way of life, now this thing's got people thinking he's come back." Sheriff Merrill Dobson says.
"They don't really think that, do they?" Audrey asked.
"I guess when you've been scared by something. I mean really scared is in you forever." Sheriff Merrill Dobson says as Maya and Spencer share a look.
"Let's stick to the facts. Were there any signs of forced entry?" Hotch asked.
"None that we could find. But whoever killed Delilah Grennan opened up every window in this house before he left." Sheriff Merrill Dobson says.
"That was a signature from the previous murders." Audrey points out as Maya nods her head.
"A detail we never released to the public." Dobson says.
"Then it came out at the trial?" Hotch asked.
"No, sir. Prosecution had Ryan nailed nine ways to Sunday, didn't need do. So, I'm hard-pressed to know how this copycat knew about those windows." Dobson says.
"The man we're looking for is most likely a fan who exhaustively studied the first killings and used them to form his own murder fantasies." Hotch says.
"He knows this case as well, as us, and better maybe, if he had actual contact with Ryan while he was incarcerated." Audrey says.
"We sent one of our agents to Hawkesville Prison to look into it." Hotch says.
"And the semen?" Sheriff Merrill Dobson asked.
"Smuggled out of the prison, kept on ice. Brought out on the anniversary of the execution." Hotch replied.
"There's an entire cottage industry based on serial-killer effects, and memorabilia. You can find absolutely anything, if you know the right people." Spencer says.
"The question is, is this a one-time commemoration or is it just the beginning?" Hotch asked.
They get a call from JJ that there had been a letter addressed from the Angel Maker, so they all go back to the station to read the letter.
Audrey reads off the letter that was sent. "I give you legacy. A breath from the Angel Maker himself. Those who prayed to forget me will one day see my face and shrink in fear." Audrey reads.
"This is the last thing people need right now." Sherriff Merrill Dobson comments.
"Audrey, how's it compare with the original correspondence?" Derek asked the woman.
"They share some compelling characteristics. I'd obviously like to look at it under magnification with a better light." Audrey says.
"Best guess, Audrey." Hotch says.
"I'd say it's authentic." Audrey says looking back at the letter.
"How can this letter be authentic, if the guy's been dead for a year?" Sherriff Dobson asked.
"It could be an elaborate forgery." Hotch suggests.
"Or it could be the genuine article, just written before his death." Derek suggests.
"Well, mail here isn't that slow." Sherriff Dobson says.
"And released through an intermediary." Spencer says.
"You mean the copycat. We're going over the prison visitor logs to check who had multiple visits with Ryan. Try to narrow a suspect pool." Derek says as a woman walks into the station and asks for the letter.
They see a crowd of people outside of the prison who believed Cortland Ryan was alive. To prove that Cortland Ryan was dead, Hotch, Audrey and Rossi went to the graveyard to dig up Cortland Ryan's grave.
time skip
It's the next day and Hotch told the team that when they dug up Cortland Ryan's grave it was empty. They were told that there might have been some complications with the execution, so they bring it to the doctor that was at the execution.
"Cortland Ryan is dead. There's no two ways about it." Dr. Hagen says.
"We're just trying to be thorough, Dr. Hagen. We heard that there may have been irregularities with the execution." Maya says.
"His heart stopped. His pupils were non-responsive. I mean, trust me, this is not the first execution I pronounced at." Dr. Hagen says.
"But it was the last." Audrey comments.
"Did something happen that day to prompt your resignation for the Corrections Department?" Maya asked.
"Everyone dies different. Ryan went hard is all." Dr. Hagen says as Maya and Derek have the same confused look on their faces.
"What does that mean, doctor?" Derek asked as Maya nods her head.
"After we cycled the drugs, we realized that he was still alive. We weren't prepared for that." Dr. Hagen says.
"How is that possible?" Rossi asked.
"Did the catheter dislodge?" Audrey asked.
"Y-yes, how'd you know that?" Dr. Hagen asked.
"She reads a lot." Hotch says glancing at Audrey before looking back at the doctor.
"I assume you re-inserted it and started potassium chloride?" Audrey asked.
"Yesh, then he started shaking, spitting." Dr. Hagen says.
"He was suffocating." Audrey says, as the doctor nods his head.
"The catheter failed again, it took him almost an hour to die, almost as if something were keeping him here. He said this was going to happen, you know." The doctor says as Audrey raised an eyebrow.
"That, what was going to happen?" Derek asked.
"His last words. He said he'd come back." Dr. Hagen says, as no one was expecting to hear that.

There had been another murder, this time, Sid Rutledge. After Emily and Derek got back from the house, the team started briefing at the station.
"There had been some strange happenings, in this case, but I urge you not to abandon reason in the search of the truth." Audrey starts.
"This is not the work of a ghost, and it's not the work of a killer who came back from the dead. This is the work of somebody who lives right here in Lower Canaan, and this person is a female." Hotch says.
"Her last victim, Sid Rutledge, he was the Angel Maker's mule. He smuggled items out of Hawkesville Prison, including the semen that was planted at the first crime scene." Derek says as Maya scrunched her nose a little.
"She killed Rutledge because he knew she was the copycat and also because he was blackmailing her." Spencer says.
"We now know that Rutledge was transferred to Hawkesville from a female prison in the wake of allegations that he was using his position to leverage sexual favors from inmates." Audrey says/
"And we think he did the same to our Unsub or Unknown Subject. In exchange for his silence, he wanted sex." Hotch says.
"Because she shot him in the junk, right?" An officer says.
"That, and the fact that he took a PDE-inhibitor shortly before his murder." Spencer says.
"A what?" Sheriff Merrill Dobson asked.
"Viagra." Derek asked as Audrey wouldn't have known that either.
"We're looking for a white woman, in her mid-30s, and she's highly intelligent, and she's not just a fan, she's a groupie." Hotch says.
"Now, she's not what you would normally expect." Maya says.
"More often than not, they're attractive, well-educated, successful. Some are even married." Audrey says.
"Generally, they fall into types. Some are 'reformers'. They're on a mission to save or rescue these murders." Maya starts, beating Spencer to it, but he did payback.
"Often, this type of groupie's been raised in a repressive, religious environment and, specifically, have been exposed to the ideals of sexual repression and subjugation of women." Spencer finished.
"Our Unsub, is a different type, one who suffers from hybristophilia. It's a sexual attraction to men who commit violent crimes. They give her a power that she lacks, which stems from low self-esteem, and a need for a father figure." Audrey says.
"Well the victims were raped. How do you explain that?" An officer asked.
"She's using an instrument to stimulate the sexual assault. This is something that she keeps in her version of a rape kit, along with the weapon that she's using to bludgeon her victims." Maya says.
"This is the list of women who visited and wrote the Angel Maker, while he as in prison. We've started to track these leads, but the list is extensive, so we're gonna need your help." JJ explains as the team splits up and talk to women who visited the Angel Maker.
time skip
There had been yet another murder and Maya is at the station with Spencer as they are reading over letters addressed to someone who the Angel Maker named 'Dove'.
"Here's another one to Dove." Spencer says. "November 2, 2006." He adds.
"Same thing?" Rossi asked.
"Yeah. 'Weather is good here. Out in the garden all day. Birds land on the fence. The moon is full now." Maya reads.
"He got an hour a day in a concrete yard. There was no garden. There were no birds. Death row haiku. I mean, you have to try to write this bad." Rossi says.
"I think he did. He tried very hard to put each word, each letter, in the right order." Maya says.
"So, it's a code?" Rossi asked as Maya nods her head.
"A steganographic method that would allow him to write letters that don't appear enciphered. The real message would be hiding in plain sight." Maya says.
"What do you need to crack it?" Rossi asked, the girlfriend of Derek.
"The ability to clone myself and a year's supply of Adderall?" Spencer says.
"I'll put in the coffee." Rossi says, making Maya smile.
"Make it decaf." Maya says.
"Already planned on it." Rossi says as he walks away to make the coffee.
time skip
The team came back to the station and Emily figured out the reason behind the puncture wounds. Their Unsub was copying the constellations. Spencer and Maya had figured out what the Unsub meant to Cortland Ryan.
"They weren't just close..." Maya says.
"They were in love." Spencer and Maya say in unison.
"How did you two crack it?" Derek asked.
"We profiled the author. Cortland Ryan was on death row for several high-ranking members of the Argan Brotherhood." Maya says as Spencer nods his head at his best friend.
"He got the code from the Aryans?" JJ asked the two.
"Either that or he read a lot of 16-century literature." Maya says.
"The Aryans like to use a cipher based on a 400 year old code written by Sir Francis Bacon." Spencer says.
"So, it's a binary code." Derek says as Maya nods her head.
"Yeah, Bacon used a 21 word alphabet. This one's 24. Each letter is assigned a bit string of five binary digits." Maya says.
"This combination yields 32 possible encodings. Normally you'd use a computer to run all these combinations..." Maya says before Spencer adds to what she said.
"But it was quicker just to do it longhand until we find the right one." Spencer says.
Emily poked Spencer's cheek as Maya grinned. "He's so lifelike."
"We don't have a complete record of their correspondence but we were able to make their chronology." Maya says.
"The woman he calls, 'dove.'" Spencer says.
"My dearest Cortland. Thank you for writing back to me. The day the verdict was read, we shared a silent moment. I knew even there was a force willing us together. Every time, I see you. I feel warmer as if by the sun and yet I fear if I come too close, I'll be consumed by your fire." Maya reads as they continue to read the letters.
"What do you think she meant by that last line? 'I will bring a part of you back?" Emily asked.
"What if she was talking about his child?" JJ asked.
"Well she does say, 'us'. 'Watch over us from the stars." Spencer says.
"She used the semen samples to plant evidence, not to get pregnant." Rossi says.
"Well, what if she did both?" Hotch asked.
"Well, if she actually had his kid, we might be able to track her through birth records." Emily says as they had another attack, so Audrey goes with Hotch to the scene.
time skip
Audrey is at the station with Hotch, Rossi, Maya, Derek and Spencer looking over names until Dobson finds a name, Chloe Kelcher. Audrey manages to convince Hotch to let her go with them to search the house. They find it empty but they did find a baby in the room with a chest that contained Cortland Ryan's body. Then they find out who Chloe's next victim is, and they bolt straight to the house. They end up finding the victim and they untie her and sneak her out of the house. Audrey ends up killing Chloe, and they find out that she was the last victim.
time skip
The case is finally over and they're ready to head home. "Anyone get directions back to the airstrip?" JJ asked.
"The town's only got one road. We'll find it." Derek says as him and Maya are leaning on the car.
"Yeah, Derek doesn't like to follow directions." Maya teases as Derek gives her a look.
"You didn't know about that?" Emily asked.
"Yeah, he likes to 'vibe it'." Spencer says.
"Okay, miss smart ass, you drive." Derek says as he tosses the keys to Maya who catches them successfully.
time skip
The team got back to Quantico, as they're packing their stuff as they're heading out for the day. Two people come through the elevator followed by everyone's favorite blonde woman. "I found these two stragglers in the elevator." Penelope announces which got Maya and Derek's attention as they turn their heads and see Tyler and Genesis.
"What are you two doing here?" Derek asked.
"I didn't go anywhere today, remember. Uncle Ricky dropped us off." Genesis says clutching her stuffed bunny.
"Oh, right." Maya says as she got her bag ready.
"Then Aunty Penewope, met us at the elevator." Genesis says still using her nickname for Penelope. No one wants to correct her when she says it, so it stuck. Like how Genesis calls Maya, My-My. Which is still cute in Maya's eyes.
"Well, I am so glad you two are here."
"Hey, Tyler." A voice says as it was Spencer who of course had a huge bag full of books.
"Oh, God." Maya says, as Spencer flashes her a smile before turning back to Tyler.
"What is that?" The teenager asked.
"Knowing, Pretty Boy. I'm guessing a huge bag of books." Derek says.
"Are they in English?" Maya asked.
"Who are these?" A voice says as Maya nearly jumped at hearing Audrey's voice.
"This is Tyler, the oldest and the little one is an adorable girl named Genesis. These are Maya and Derek's newly adopted kiddos." Penelope says as Audrey nods her head with a small smile.
"Oh cool. When did you adopt them?" Audrey asked.
"About little over two months ago." Derek says.
"That's nice." Audrey says as she headed in the direction of the elevator. "Have a great night."
"You, too!" Genesis so graciously yelled which made Maya give her a look.
"I think the whole building heard you." Maya says to the little girl.
"That was the main idea." Genesis says as Maya shook her head a little.
"No way, I got the German version of Harry Potter." Tyler says as he was looking through the bag of books that Spencer so graciously got him.
"Not all of them are in English." Spencer says as Maya and Derek shook their heads.
"Of course not." Maya sarcastically adds.
"Ty, you don't know German. How are you gonna read a German book?" Derek adds into the conversation which is a lot interesting.
"Oh that reminds me. I also got him this too." Spencer says as he pulls something out of his satchel.
"German for beginners?" Maya says reading the cover of the book.
"Yup, I also got him one for Spanish, French and Portuguese." Spencer says.
"Why?" Derek and Maya both asked in unison.
"You never know when he will need to learn languages. So I got him prepared." Spencer says as Tyler nods his head as Penelope had already disappeared with Genesis.
"Great, and now Penelope kidnapped my daughter. Let's just hope she won't suffocate her with love." Maya says as that's also when Derek takes notice of the absence of Penelope and Genesis.
"Not gonna be easy trying to pry a six year old, from her best friend." Derek says which made Maya have a huge grin.
"Which brings me to have you go get her."
"Wait, why me?"
"Because you're the father."
"What are you gonna do?"
"Watch you get attacked by a six year old."
"That is cruel."
"I know."
