Chapter Six
I glanced over at the test tube on the desk beside me, before returning my attention to the notes I was writing. Ever since I woke up as Gavin Fowler, Mr Davenport has been putting me hard at work in the lab. He says that "it's more convincing if I'm always down in the lab doing work". Honestly, I think there's another reason why. Either he can't be bothered doing the work himself - which is highly unlikely, as he loves inventing and all that shit - or, he's forgotten that I'm actually not his intern and am actually his son; which would mean that he's forgotten who I really am, or just can't bare to think of me as that anymore.
I think that's what it's like for most people.
The only person who still calls me by my real name, when possible, is Leo - but I seem to be hanging out with him the most, which is probably why.
The only time Mr Davenport talks to me is when he has to, which is usually when Adam or Bree are in the room. Ever since I woke up, it's almost as if the bond between the two of us has snapped; like he can't bare to look at me anymore.
I sighed, rubbing the back of my neck. I slowly stood up and started pacing around the lab, trying to rid myself of the headache that had gradually formed over time.
I stopped walking around when I came to one of my favourite parts of the lab - the Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Spectrometer. I smiled as I thought back to the day when I first discovered it; how Adam teased me for weeks about how it'd be the closest thing I'd ever get to having a girlfriend.
"Hey, Gav!" A cheerful voice came from behind me.
I held back a laugh as I turned to face Adam. I quickly noticed how his hands were situated behind his back, and prepared for the worst.
"You're not busy or anything, right?" He pushed.
"Well, I've kinda got a lot of work that needs to be finished --"
"Great!" He cried, not really listening to what I was saying. He quickly handed me a sheet of paper. "Here's my math homework".
I sighed, reluctantly taking the paper from him and grabbing a pen, leaning against the closest desk to begin answering the questions.
"Forty-five to the power of three? Jesus that's simple," I muttered to myself as I quickly scribbled down the answer.
I continued to answer his paper for a few minutes before realising that Adam was still standing there, watching me with a weird look etched onto his face.
"Um, what's wrong?" I asked him. Adam never stayed to watch me do his homework, he usually just went back upstairs and played on the Xbox until I handed the completed work back to him.
Adam shrugged. "Nothing".
"Then why're you looking at me like that?"
He shrugged again.
I bit my lip and nodded, cautiously retuning my attention to the series of questions I had yet to answer.
After a moment of awkward silence between the two of us, Adam sighed.
"So, you like Bree, huh?"
The question caught me off guard.
"What?"
"Well, she obviously likes you, and I'm pretty sure you like her back, so..."
"Well, yeah. I do like her, but as a friend."
Adam raised an eyebrow. "You sure about that?"
I rolled my eyes and stood up straight. "OK, what makes you so sure that I like her?"
He tried to conceal a smile. "Just the way you look at her".
"Adam! I've been here for less than a week. I don't have a crush on your sister. Besides, that's extremely unprofessional".
He laughed. "Yeah, I've head that excuse before".
"Where!?"
"Every TV show and movie that has ever been made".
"You're seriously basing your accusation off of the laws of fiction?"
"Well, it's obviously true".
I rolled my eyes.
"Well, then," Adam announced with a grin, clapping his hands together for effect. "It's settled. You definitely like Bree".
"What the hell? I don't like your sister! I mean, sure I like her - as a friend, obviously - but I don't love her or anything".
"Mhmm, sure".
"OK, what proof are you going to throw at me now?"
"Your denial about the situation. Denial is always the first clue that you love someone".
"I don't..." I sighed. Adam obviously wasn't going to let this drop. I decided to change to topic. "Shouldn't you be doing homework or something?" I asked, hoping that'd be enough to make him leave.
He laughed. "I like you Gavin. You're funny". He continued chuckling to himself as he retreated back upstairs, finally leaving me alone.
I rolled my eyes again and sighed.
He can't seriously think that I like Bree - that'd be ridiculous. I mean, c'mon! She's my sister. It'd be the most awkward relationship I'd ever have the displeasure of enduring.
I know that Bree's really pretty and smart and talented...
But no!
Anyway, even if I did like her, there's no way that she'd feel the same about me. Why would she ever like me of all people?! It's ridiculous and absolutely impossible.
At least, I think it is...
