Chapter Eight

I walked slowly along the street, my hands shoved deep into my pockets. I stared at the ground as I moved, making sure to go slow as I didn't want any more 'speed incidents'.

I continued walking like this for a while before feeling a buzz in my trouser pocket. I sighed and grabbed my phone, biting my lip as I read the called ID. After a moment I decided to answer it; what was the worst that could happen?

"Hey Leo," I said quietly.

"Where the hell are you?" He yelled in response. "Everyone's going berserk. We're all really worried, especially Big D".

I rubbed the back of my neck, suddenly feeling really bad about what happened between the two of us only an hour ago.

"I-," I sighed, "I just needed to get some fresh air; clear my head a bit".

Leo paused and I could tell that he was nodding in response.

"So, um, how'd the mission go?" I asked, wanting to break the tension.

"Oh, yeah, that. Well, we didn't actually have to worry. Some vigilante sorted it out for us, called himself the Arrow. Never heard of him myself, but apparently he's quite famous in Starling City".

"I think I read an article about him once," I mumbled. "Can't remember what it was about, but the name definitely rings a bell".

"Yeah, well hopefully next time we'll be able to actually complete the mission. I got all dressed up for nothing!"

I shrugged. "Tough luck".

"Glad to know you're so supportive".

I laughed before frowning. "Hey, um Leo?"

"Yeah buddy?"

"Um..."I paused for a moment, wondering how to phrase my question.

"Well? Spit it out".

"I was just wondering if you can hack onto Mr Davenports files about our bionics?"

There was a moment of respite before I could hear shuffling on the other end of the line, and I could tell that Leo was moving down to the lab. There was an opening of closing of doors, a moment where Leo cursed as he banged his foot against something, and a few following seconds of fingers clacking against a keyboard.

"It's password protected," he informed me.

I ran my fingers through my hair as I strained to remember one of the many passwords used by the almighty Davenport. "Um, try DAVENPORT1".

The typing continued and a few words were muttered before I received a response. "OK, I'm in. What d'you want?"

"Can you check out the list of the bionics I have?"

"Um, yeah, sure. Do you mind if I ask why?"

"Just, please do it".

"Right. Superior Intelligence, Molecular Kinesis, Force Field, Heightened Senses--"

"Anything about Super Speed in there?"

"Uh..." He paused. "No, not that I know of".

I sighed.

"Is- is there a problem with that, or...?"

"No. No, um, thanks anyway".

"Right...".

"Well, uh, I'll see you in about half in hour".

"Yeah, bye?"

I bit my lip and shoved my phone back into my pocket, thoughts flying through my head. The only logical explanation for my speed situation has officially been ruled out. I kicked a rock across the pavement and rubbed my knuckles in thought before sighing and shaking my head. I was honestly too tired to think up an exposition.
I was just about to make my way home before I felt a tap on my shoulder.

I spun around, meeting a fairly tall brunette woman with striking brown eyes. I looked her up and down, acknowledging her fairly nice black and baby pink pencil dress. Although I had never seen her before, there was definitely something familiar about the woman.
Behind her stood a man who looked like he was just out of university. For some reason, his shoulder length black hair and nerdy Big Bang Theory shirt also struck me as strangely familiar.

"Can I help you?" I asked, confused as I looked at their relieved faces.

I suddenly felt pain erupt from the side of my face, and my hand instantly shot up to it in shock. I soon realised that the woman had slapped me in the face.

"Caitlin, what the hell did you do that for?" The boy asked, glaring at the woman, Caitlin

Caitlin sighed, wiping a stray tear from her eye. "It's been six months Barry. Six whole months! You never thought to check in with us? Let us know that you were bloody alive!? We thought Doctor Demon had killed you!"

"Yeah, Iris is going to punch the shit outta you when she finds out you're alive," the boy spoke up, laughing slightly.

I gave them a confused look. "Um, sorry but I think you might have mistaken me for someone else".

"Don't give me that crap Barry Allen," Caitlin snapped, giving me a serious look.

"I'm sorry, I honestly have no idea who you are, or who this Barry Allen is".

The boy laughed. "You're joking, right? Is this your attempt of being funny? If it is, then I'm sorry bro, your humour game just isn't strong enough".

I shook my head and shrugged.

"Cisco," Caitlin whispered. "I think he might be telling the truth. I truly think he has no clue who we are".

"That's what I was trying to tell you," I sighed. "My name is Gavin - well, technically it's Chase, but at the moment it's Gavin... It's a complicated story. Anyway, I'm not this Barry guy you're looking for. Sorry".

"It must be amnesia," Caitlin said, completely ignoring what I had said.

"Which would explain why he wouldn't contact us," Cisco supplied.

"Exactly".

"I'm not Barry!" I interrupted them.

Caitlin gave me a sympathetic smile and stepped forward slightly. "What do you call yourself again? Gavin?"

I nodded.

"Listen, Gavin," she continued, "your name is Barry Allen. You're twenty-five years old and you live in Central City. About a year and a half ago you were in a freak accident which caused you to go into a nine month coma which..." she paused for a moment and looked around before lowering her voice to continue. "Which made you the impossible".

"Meaning?" I asked, suddenly very confused.

"You became a superhero, man," Cisco chirped up.

"What?"

Caitlin sighed. "You became the guardian of Central City. You became The Flash".

"The Flash?" I scoffed. "That's not a very good name".

Cisco gasped, utterly offended. "It's a beautiful name, man! Metahumans tremble at the sound of it!"

"Metahumans?"

"People with extraordinary abilities - like you".

"Right". I shook my head. "Listen, you're both super nice, but I think you might've read a bit too many comic books as kids. There's no such thing as a superhero". Unless, of course, you're bionic.

"You're calling us crazy?" Cisco asked, eyebrow raised.

"That's kinda how you're coming across to me, yeah".

"OK," Caitlin said softly, stepping closer to me.  "Just hear me out, please?"

I sighed and nodded.

"Have you recently experienced anything weird? Anything specifically speed related?"

I hesitated, thinking back to less than an hour ago .

"You have, haven't you?" Cisco prompted.

"I, uh... I might've moved faster than usual, yeah".

Cisco and Caitlin looked at each other and grinned.

"It's him," Caitlin said happily. "We've found our Barry Allen".

Cisco grinned. "We've found the Flash".
