{scarecrow}

The three of them are sleeping, Ana is currently using Dean's shoulder as a pillow. Dean has his arms wrapped around Ana keeping her close. Dean's phone rings but he doesn't wake up. "Dean." Sam says as Dean still doesn't wake up. Sam grabs the phone from the bedside table. "Hello?"

"Sam is that you?" Was the person on the other end of the phone which was the boy's father that Ana definitely doesn't like.

"Dad? Are you hurt?" Sam asks as he sits up in the bed.

"I'm fine."

"We've been looking for you everywhere. We didn't know where you were, if you were okay." Sam says, as Ana moved a little in her sleep, which resulted in Dean moving also. Whenever she moves, he moves. It is the other way around also.

"Sammy, I'm alright. What about you and Dean?"

"We're fine, Dad. Where are you?" Sam asks John, as Dean sits up on the bed, with a grumpy looking Ana because she was using his shoulder as a pillow.

"Sorry, kiddo. I can't tell you that."

"Why? Why not?" Sam asks.

"Is that Dad?" Dean asks.

"Look, I know this is hard for you to understand. You're just going to have to trust me on this."

"You're after it, aren't you? The thing that killed Mom." Sam says.

"Yeah, it's a demon, Sam."

"Dean? What's wrong?" A sleepy Ana asks Dean as he presses a kiss onto her head.

"I don't know baby." Dean whispers to Ana, as Ana lays back on the pillow, as Dean rubs his fingers down the fabric of her shirt that she is wearing.

"A demon? What's he saying?" Dean asks.

"I do. Listen, Sammy, I, uh.... I also know what happened to your girlfriend. I'm so sorry. I would've done anything to protect you from that."

"You know where it is?" Sam asks.

"Yeah, I think I'm finally closing in on it."

"Let us help." Sam says.

"You can't. You can't be any part of it."

"Why not?" Sam asks.

"Give me the phone." Dean says to his brother.

"Listen, Sammy, that's why I'm calling. You and your brother, you got to stop looking for me. Alright, now I need you to write down these names." John says.

"Names? What names, Dad -- talk to me, tell me what's going on." Sam says to his father.

"Look, we don't have time for this. This is bigger than you think, they're everywhere. Even us talking right now, it's not safe."

"No. Alright? No way." Sam says.

"Give me the phone." Dean says.

"I have given you an order, and you do your job. You understand, me? Now take down these names." John says as Dean grabs the phone from Sam.

"Dad, it's me. Where are you?" Dean asks. "Yes, sir.... uh yeah, I got a pen. What are their names?" Dean says.

───※ ·❆· ※───

The three of them are in the Impala. For the time being, Ana has tried to go back to bed, like every time that Dean has to wake her up.

"Alright, so the names Dad gave us, they're all couples?" Sam asks.

"Three different couples. All went missing." Dean says.

"And they're all from different towns? Different states?" Sam says.

"That's right. You got Washington, New York, Colorado. Each couple took a road trip cross-country. None of them arrived at their destination, and none of them were ever heard from again." Dean explains.

"Well, it's a big country Dean. They could've disappeared anywhere." Sam says as he is the one who is driving, and Dean is in the passenger seat.

"Yeah, could've. But each one's route took 'em to the same part of Indiana. Always on the second week of April. One year after another after another." Dean says.

"This is the second week in April." Sam says.

"Yep." Dean says.

"So, Dad is sending us to Indiana to go hunting for something before another couple vanishes?" Sam asks.

"Yahtzee. Can you imagine putting together a pattern like this? All the different obits Dad had to go through. The man's a master." Dean says as Sam is annoyed as he pulls over to the side of the road and turns off the car. "What are you doing?"

"We're not going to Indiana." Sam says to his brother as Dean turns to Sam.

"We're not?" Dean asks his brother.

"No. We're going to California. Dad called from a payphone. Sacramento area code." Sam says, as Dean rolls his eyes a little.

"Sam." Dean says, as Ana sits up knowing that she isn't going to fall asleep with the brothers arguing. She never sleeps well when the brothers are arguing in the first place.

"Dean, if this demon killed Mom and Jess, and Dad's closing in, we've got to be there. We've got to help." Sam says.

"Dad doesn't want our help." Dean says.

"I don't care." Sam says.

"He's given us an order." Dean says.

"I don't care. We don't always have to do what he says." Sam says firmly.

"Sam, Dad is asking us to work jobs, to save lives. It's important." Dean says.

"Alright, I understand, believe me, I understand. But I'm talking one week here, man, to get answers. To get revenge." Sam says.

"Alright, look, I know how you feel." Dean says.

"Do you?" Sam asks as both Ana and Dean are shocked by Sam's tone. "How old were you when Mom died? Four? Jess died six months ago. How the hell would you know how I feel?"

"Dad said it wasn't safe. For any of us. I mean, he obviously knows something that we don't, so if he says to stay away, we stay away." Dean says as Ana knows that this argument is slowly escalating.

"I don't understand the blind faith you have in the man. I mean, it's like you don't even question him." Sam says.

"Yeah, it's called being a good son!" Dean says, as Sam gets out of the car. Dean also gets out of the car and watches Sam unload his stuff from the trunk. Ana uses this time to get to the passenger seat. "You're a selfish bastard, you know that? You just do whatever you want. Don't care what anybody thinks."

"That's what you really think?" Sam asks.

"Yes, it is." Dean says

"Well then this selfish bastard is going to California." Sam says as he puts on his backpack and starts to walk away.

"Come on, you're not serious." Dean says.

"I am serious." Sam says.

"It's the middle of the night! Hey, me and Ana are taking off, and I will leave your ass, you hear me?" Dean says as Sam stops walking and turns around.

"That's what I want you to do." Sam says as the brothers stare at each other, for a few seconds.

"Goodbye, Sam." Dean says as he closes the trunk and gets in the car and drives away. Sam watches him leave, as he then starts walking away.

───※ ·❆· ※───

Dean and Ana had arrived in Burkittsville, Indiana. Dean pulls over to the side of the road and pulls out his cellphone. He selects the name 'Sam mobile' and thinks about calling Sam. He changes his mind and closes his cellphone, he shuts the car and him, and Ana get out of the car.

The couple walked towards what looks like a cafe, where a man was sitting in a wooden chair in front of the cafe. "Let me guess, you're Scotty." Dean says as he points to the sign.

"Yep." The guy named Scotty says.

"Hi, my name's John Bonham, and this is my girlfriend, Ana." Dean says to Scotty.

"Isn't that the drummer for Led Zepplin?" Scotty asks.

Dean looks taken aback that Scotty had caught on. "Wow. Good. Classic rock fan." Dean says as Ana stands beside Dean.

"What can I do for you two?" Scotty asks as Dean takes two pieces of paper out of his pocket. They are two missing person flyers for Holly and Vince Parker.

"I was wondering if, uh, you've seen these people by chance." Dean says as Scotty looks at the flyers.

"Nope. Who are they?"

"Uh, Holly is one of Ana's friends. They went missing about a year ago. They passed through somewhere around here, and she's already asked around Scottsburg and Salem--" Dean says but he gets cut off by Scotty.

"Sorry." Scotty says as he hands Ana the flyers. "We don't get many strangers around here." Scotty says as Dean and Ana nod their heads.

"Scotty, you've got a smile that lights up a room, anybody ever tell you that?" Dean asks as Scotty stares at him strangely, as Dean chuckles. "Never mind. See you around." Dean says as him and Ana, walk away.

───※ ·❆· ※───

Ana and Dean are at a general store in Burkittsville, Indiana. "You're sure they didn't stop for gas or something?" Dean asks, as the girl shakes her head no.

"Nope, don't remember 'em. You said they were friends of yours?" A guy named Harley says.

"That's right." Ana says as Emily comes downstairs carrying some boxes.

"Did the guy have a tattoo?" Wmily asks.

"Yes, he did." Dean says as Emily puts the boxes on the counter and looks at the picture of Vince. "You remember? They were just married."

"You're right. They did stop for gas. Weren't here more than ten minutes." Harley says suddenly remembering.

"You remember anything else?" Ana asks.

"I told 'em how to get back to the interstate. They left town." Harley says.

"Could you point us in that same direction?" Dean asks.

"Sure." Harley says.

───※ ·❆· ※───

Dean and Ana are in the car. Dean is driving by the orchard when they hear a noise coming from the backseat. "What the hell?" Dean says, as Ana leans forward and digs into the bag and pulls out the EMF meters, which is beeping frantically.

The couple is now walking in the orchard and sees a scarecrow on its post. They walk over to it and looks at it for a second. "Dude, you're fugly." Dean says.

"More like creepy." Ana says, as Dean nods his head at what she said.

The scarecrow doesn't move. Dean notices a sickle on in the scarecrow's hand and a design on its arm. Daen takes a ladder from a nearby tree and climbs to the top so that he is eye level with the scarecrow. Ana is right where Dean was standing.

"I will laugh if that thing moves, and you scream." Ana says, as Dean turns to her with a glare, that slowly makes her grin fade away.

Dean turns back to the scarecrow and moves its clothing and recognizes the design from Vince's tattoo. He pulls out Vince's flyer and compares the designs, which are exactly the same. Dean looks at the scarecrow again. "Nice tat."

"Let me guess, it's the same as Vince's?" Ana asks.

"Yahtzee."

───※ ·❆· ※───

Ana and Dean are back at the gas station, Dean pulls up in the impala and gets out, along with Ana. Emily is standing by the gas pump. "You're back." Emily says.

"Never left." Dean says, as Ana sits on the trunk of the impala.

"Still looking for her friends?" Emily asks as Ana nods her head.

"You mind fillin' her up Emily?" Dean says as Emily grabs a pump and starts filling up the gas tank. "So, you grew up here?" Dean asks.

"I came here when I was thirteen. I lost my parents. Car accident. My aunt and uncle took me in." Emily says.

"They're nice people." Ana comments.

"Everybody's nice here." Emily says.

"So, what's, it's the, uh, perfect little town?" Dean asks.

"Well, you know, it's the boonies. But I love it, I mean, the towns around us, people losing their homes, their farms. But here, it's almost like we're blessed." Emily says as Ana raises an eyebrow at what she said.

"Hey, you been out to the orchard?" Dean asks.

"You see that scarecrow?" Ana asks.

"Yeah, it creeps me out." Emily says as Dean laughs.

"Whose is it?" Dean asks.

"I don't know. It's just always been there." Emily says.

Dean nods towards a red van parked by the garage. "That your aunt or uncles?"

"Customer. Had some car troubles." Emily says.

"It's not a couple, is it? A guy and a girl?" Ana asks as Emily nods her head.

"Mhm." Emily says as Dean looks concerned.

───※ ·❆· ※───

Ana and Dean are back at Scotty's cafe. Scotty is serving a couple whose car broke down. Scotty puts two plates in front of them. "We're famous for our apples. So, you got to try this pie."

"Oh, hey Scotty. Can I get two coffees, black?" Dean asks as Scotty walks away to get the coffee. "Oh, and some of that pie too, one apple and cherry. Thanks."

Dean and Ana sit at a table next to the couple Scotty was just serving. "How ya doin?" Dean asks as the couple smiles and waves. "Just passin' through?"

"Road trip." The guy says.

"Hm, Yeah, us too." Dean says as Scotty walks over to the couple refilling their cider.

"I'm sure these people want to eat in peace." Scotty says, as Ana looks around as Dean keeps on talking to the couple. Dean puts a hand on Ana's thigh gently rubbing the fabric of her ripped jeans that she's wearing.

"Just a little friendly conversation." Dean says to Scotty as he walks away. "Oh, and that coffee, too. Thanks." Dean says to Scotty as said Scotty looks agitated. Dean keeps talking to the couple. "So, what brings you to town?" He asks.

"We just stopped for gas, and uh, the guy at the gas station saved our lives." The girl says.

"Is that right?" Dean asks.

"Yeah, one of our brake lines was leaking. We had no idea; he is fixing it for us." The guy says, as Dean and Ana look concerned.

"Nice people." Dean says, as he continues the motion of his hand on Ana's thigh.

"Yeah." The guy says.

"So, how long till you're up and runnin'?" Dean asks.

"Sundown." The guy says.

"Really." Dean says as he thinks for a minute. "To fix a brake line?" The man nods. "I mean, you know, I know a thing or two about cars. I could probably have you two up and running in about an hour. I wouldn't charge you anything."

"You know, thanks a lot, but I think we'd rather have a mechanic do it." The girl says.

"Sure. I know." Dean says as he pauses for a second. "You know, it's just that these roads. They're not real safe at night." Dean says, as the guy and girl exchange a look.

"I'm sorry?" The girl asks.

"I know it sounds strange, but, uh -- you might be in danger." Dean says.

"Look, we're trying to eat, okay?" The man says annoyed.

"Yeah." Dean says as he looks slightly disappointed, as Dean is now holding Ana's hand underneath the table. The couple seems worried and slightly freaked out by Dean. "You know, my brother could give you this puppy dog look, and you'd just buy right into it." Dean says as the bell above the cafe door jingles and someone walks in. Scotty comes out from the back room.

Ana looks up and sees the sheriff, she nudges Dean's side.

"Thanks for coming, Sheriff." Scotty says as Dean and Ana look nervous and frustrated. Scotty whispers something in the sheriff's ear, and they both look at Dean and Ana, as the two of them look away. The sheriff walks towards the two of them.

"I'd like a word please." The sheriff says.

"Come on. We're having a bad day already." Dean says.

"You know what would make it worse?" The sheriff asks as Dean nods his head.

───※ ·❆· ※───

The sheriff's car is following the impala to make sure that the couple leaves the town. When Dean is gone, the sheriff turns around and drives back to the small town.

"Man, and I wanted my coffee."

"I know, and I wanted my pie."

"Can we get pie and coffee, after this?" Ana asks as she is sitting in the passenger seat.

"Of course, baby."

"Yay." Ana cheers like a little kid being told that they can have candy. Dean has a smirk on his face, as he loves when Ana is this happy. He'd do anything to see her this happy, every day. All he has to do is mentioned coffee, pie, and or Harry Potter, and here she is all happy, like a kid. She is his kid, and he loves her. So much.

"How much do you know about pagan gods?" Dean asks, Ana as she turns to him confused for a second.

"Uh, it is called my computer. I guess I know a little. Why? You think we're dealing with a pagan god?"

"I mean, it makes sense, the sacrifices of the couples. I guess."

───※ ·❆· ※───

It is now nighttime, and Dean and Ana are now driving towards the town they were supposed to get out of.

Ana fell asleep, as Dean is letting her sleep, and if he needs anything he can just call Ana. Because unlike Sam, Ana answers her phone. Sometimes.

The couple are almost at the clearing when Dean runs in front of them, and they stop. "Get back to your car." Dean says as the couple looks behind them and sees the scarecrow getting closer. "Go! Go!" Dean says as the couple runs away.

Dean begins running and cocks his gun again and shoots, the scarecrow keeps going. Dean tries one more time to shoot but the scarecrow keeps moving. Dean keeps running. "Go! Go!" Dean yells as Dean and the couple reach the clearing. Dean cocks the gun and looks around, but the scarecrow has disappared.

"What--what the hell was that?" The guy asks.

"Don't ask." Dean says.

───※ ·❆· ※───

"The scarecrow climbed off its cross?" Sam asks from the bus station.

"Yeah, I'm tellin'  ya. Burkittsville, Indiana. Fun town." Dean says sarcastically, as he looks over at Ana who is still asleep in the passenger seat.

"It didn't kill the couple, did it?" Sam asks.

"No. I can't cope without you, you know." Dean says.

"So, something must be animating it. A spirit." Sam says.

"No, it's more than a spirit. It's a god. A pagan God, anyway." Dean says.

"What makes you say that?" Sam asks.

"The annual cycle of its killings? And the fact that the victims are always a man and woman. Like some kind of fertility right. And you should see the locals. The way they treated this couple. Fattenin' 'em up, like a Christmas turkey."

"The last meal. Given to sacrificial victims." Sam says.

"Yeah, me and Annie are thinking a ritual sacrifice to appease some Pagan God." Dean says.

"So, a god possesses a scarecrow." Sam says.

"And the scarecrow takes its sacrifice. And for another year, the crops won't wilt, and disease won't spread." Dean says.

"Do you know which god, you two are dealing with?" Sam asks.

"No, not yet." Dean says.

"Well, you figure out what it is, you can figure out a way to kill it."

"I'm having a date with my trusty sidekick because she is a lore fanatic. Since we are short on sidekicks to do the research." Dean says to his brother.

"You know, if you're hinting you need my help, just ask." Sam says.

"I'm not hinting anything. Actually, uh -- I want you to know...I mean, don't think---"

"Yeah, I'm sorry too." Sam says.

"Sam, you were right. You got to do your own thing. You got to live your own life." Dean says.

"Are you serious?"

"You've always known what you want. And you go after it. You stand up to Dad. And you always have. Hell, I wish I -- anyway. I admire that about you. I'm proud of you, Sammy." Dean says.

"I don't even know what to say." Sam says.

"Say, you'll take care of yourself." Dean says.

"I will." Sam says.

"Call, me or Annie, when you find Dad." Dean says.

"Okay, bye Dean." The brothers then hang up.

───※ ·❆· ※───

Ana and Dean are at a library, as they're doing research about Pagan gods. Trying to figure out which one they're dealing with, so that they can kill it.

"If I know one thing. Indiana isn't known for Pagan worship, that's for sure. It is dryer than shit." Ana says as she is on her computer, and Dean is on a library computer beside her.

"Ain't that the truth."

───※ ·❆· ※───

"I think I got something." Ana says as Dean leans towards Ana. "Vanir was the Norse God of protection and prosperity, keeping the local settlements safe from harm. Some villages-built effigies of the Vanir in their fields. Other villages practiced human sacrifice. One male, and one female. Like the couple that disappeared."

"God, I love you." Dean says to Ana.

"Not the time." Ana says as Dean gives her a pout. "The Vanir's energy is from the sacred tree. I think the way to kill Vanir is to torch the tree." Ana says as she continues to read.

"This is why I love that brain of yours. And your freakish lore hobby."

"Thank you..." Ana says weirdly as Dean kisses the side of her face.

After that Ana and Dean, walk out of the library doors, and back to the Impala, then the sheriff hits the two of them on the head with his rifle. Which knocks the two of them out.

───※ ·❆· ※───

Dean and Ana are trying to open the cellar door, but they both fail. "So, if I am correct and I am just going to assume we are the next to be sacrificed." Ana says to Dean, as he turns to her to give her a 'really' look. "What, I'm not wrong. From the looks of it."

"The tree is in the orchard, right?" Dean asks.

"Probably, not sure. But I'm going to guess that it is in the orchard." Ana says.

Just then the cellar door opens, and the four elders are standing there. "It's time." Stacy says, as Dean and Ana look at each other nervous of what is going to happen.

───※ ·❆· ※───

The elders are now tying Ana and Dean to two trees. "How many people have you killed, sheriff? How much blood is on your hands?" Dean asks.

"We don't kill them." The sheriff says.

"No, but you sure cover up after. I mean, how many cars have you hidden, clothes you have burned?" Dean asks as the sheriff walks away.

"The good of the many out weights the good of the one." Stacy says as the four elders walk away.

"I hope your apple pie is freakin' worth it!" Dean yells, as Ana gives him a look.

'Course, you're holding a grudge on the pie. get over it, we are going to die anyway'

"So, Dean-O. What's the plan?" Ana asks her boyfriend.

"I'm workin' on it."

"Really? How is that working out for you."

"Shut up."

A shadow then moves near the trees. "Oh, god. Please let that be a bunny. Or a friendly dog." Ana says underneath her breath.

"Is that Sam?" Dean asks as Ana opens an eye and looks at Dean, before she looks at the shadow.

"Dean? Ana?" Sam says.

"Oh! Oh, I take everything back I said. I'm so happy to see you. Come on. Get us out of here." Dean says as Sam begins untying Dean and Ana from the tree. "How'd you get here?"

"I, uh--I stole a car." Sam says.

"Well, that's a first." Ana mumbles.

"The scarecrow could come alive any minute." Dean says, as Sam looks around.

"What scarecrow?" Sam questions, as Dean and Ana get up and sees the scarecrow's post is empty.

"Well, shit. This just got awesome." Ana says annoyed. "Just what I needed."

───※ ·❆· ※───

The three of them are running like their lives depend on it. Because it does. They have a killer a scarecrow on their asses and Ana doesn't want to die yet. At least not now. She wants to figure out what she will have for breakfast tomorrow. And when she is going to kill Dean. But running from a scarecrow is slightly more important than food.

"Alright, now this sacred tree you two are talking about---" Sam says.

"It's the source of its power." Ana says.

"So, let's find it and burn it." Sam says.

"Nah, let's burn it in the morning. Let's just shag ass before Leather Face catches up." Dean says as the three of them reach a clearing.

Waiting for the three of them are the elders and some townspeople. "This way." Ana says as they turn around, but they are blocked in all directions. "Please let us go." Ana says to the elders.

"It will be over quickly. I promise." Harley says.

Just then the scarecrow sticks his sickle through Harley's stomach. Stacy is captured by the scarecrow. Ana hides behind Dean, as he has his hand protectively around her keeping her close. Harley and Stacy are dragged away by the scarecrow. The rest of the townspeople run away in fright.

"Come on, let's go." Dean says as the three of them start running again. The three of them hear a noise and they turn around. But the scarecrow and its victims have disappeared. The three of them stay there and look around.

───※ ·❆· ※───

The three of them walk to the sacred tree with gasoline and a lighter. The tree is marked with Vince's tattoo design. Sam goes to the tree and pours the gasoline on it. Dean picks up a long branch and light it.

"Can't wait for this forsaken town to burn." Ana says as she stands beside Dean. Dean throws the branch onto the tree and the three of them watch it go into flames.

───※ ·❆· ※───

The three of them are heading towards the impala. "So, the rest of the townspeople, they'll just get away with it?" Ana asks.

"Well, what'll happen to the town will have to be punishment enough." Dean says as they start walking towards the impala. Dean has an arm around Ana. "So, can I drop you off somewhere?" Dean asks.

"No, I think you two are stuck with me." Sam says as they stop at the car.

"What made you change your mind?" Dean asks.

"I didn't. I still want to find Dad, and you're still a pain in my ass." Sam says as Dean nods. "But Jess and Mom -- they're both gone. Dad is God knows where. You, me and Ana. We're all that we have left. So, if we're going to see this through, we're going to do it together."

"Hold me, Sam. That was beautiful." Dean says as he puts his hand on Sam's shoulder who hits it away. The three of them share a laugh.

"You should be kissing my ass, you were dead meat, dude." Sam says to his brother.

"Yeah, right. I had a plan; I'd have gotten out." Dean says.

"He didn't have a plan." Ana says to Sam, as Dean lightly pinched her side to retaliate.

"Right." Sam says as the brothers smile as they get into the car.

"Can we get food?" Ana asks like a child wanting food.

"Great, now she is hungry." Sam says as Ana leaned forward and whacked Sam up the head. "Hey! That doesn't mean you can hit me."

"Ana be nice." Dean says as Ana crossed her arms over her chest. "Or no food."

"But Dean. I want food." Ana says whiny.

"If you're a good girl, you can get food." Dean says as Ana huffed, which only made her look cute and adorable.

After a couple minutes of silence, Ana decided that was too long for silence. "Can we still get food?"

"We just got done of almost dying, and you're worried about food? Seriously, Ana?" Sam says to the red-haired woman.

"Okay, and? A girl has her priorities. And food is mine. You have a problem with that."

"Annie, your spoiled princess is showing."

"She's your spoiled princess."

"Exactly."
