Y/N RIDES DOWN the highway on his motorcycle. His demeanor is crestfallen with a tinge of determination. The intro instrumental of The Sense of Me by Mud Flow kicks up on his stereo as he speeds up.
After exiting the highway and making it to the suburbs of Thousand Oaks, his bike screeched to a stop in front of the large house. He hops off and removes his helmet, holding it in his left hand as he hurries to the front door.
He rings the doorbell and doesn't even wait until he begins to knock loudly. He steps back and rubs his face before knocking again.
"Dad, open the door!" Y/N exclaims.
After waiting a few seconds, the eighteen-year-old gives up and turns around. The porch light goes on as he retreats, wondering what he will do now.
Finally, Mr. L/N steps onto the porch, and Y/N spins around to face him. David calls out.
"Y/N?"
The young man sighs. "I need your help."
His father is concerned. "What's wrong? Are you okay?"
"It's my girlfriend. Hailee. She's—" He pauses. "She's got cancer, okay? And I need your wife to come and see her right now."
"Okay, will you calm down?"
Y/N is impatient and snaps. "Can you help me or not?"
"Son...she doesn't—she doesn't know her case. She doesn't know her history. She'd have to talk to her physician. Evangeline's a cardiologist, she can't—"
Y/N scoffs. He should've figured that they'd be of no help. Of course. He wasted his time. Once again, his father wouldn't be there for him or assist in his needs.
"You know, just forget it. I knew it."
Y/N turns around again to go. David calls out to his son.
"Would you wait? Y/N, wait!"
A brunette appears on the porch in her nightgown. It is David's wife who questions what all the commotion is about.
Y/N hops back onto his motorcycle and straps on his helmet. He revs up and screeches off. David runs his hands along his hair and sighs as Y/N speeds away.
Later, Y/N is making the long trek back home, driving along unhappily. The Sense of Me continues to play during his woeful episode.
Try to try again
To hear yourself again from time to time
He stares at the empty road ahead through his visor, on the verge of tears.

THE YOUNG MAN stands alone in his backyard, holding his basketball as he looks at the hoop ahead of him. He dribbles it and is prepared to shoot but decides not to.
Y/N sighs, letting it fall from his grasp, and the ball rolls away. He stuffs his hands into his pockets and looks down.
Suddenly, Andres approaches. He stands beside Y/N and looks up at the hoop.
"Hey." He greets. "Your mom called me. Talk to me, man."
"About what?" Y/N asks.
"About you." Andres turns to him. "About Hailee."
"What's there to talk about? She's the best person I've ever known."
He turns to look at Andres sadly, then faces forward again. Andres lets out an exhale and shakes his head guiltily.
"I didn't understand."
Andres felt terrible for everything. He regrets being involved in the bullying of Hailee. He wishes he'd go back and have a redo. He is also disappointed in himself that he didn't have his best friend's back when he should've.
Y/N glances at him for a moment. He nods.
"It's okay, man. It's okay."
There is no resentment toward Andres by Y/N. He understands. And if there is anything Hailee taught him..., it is to try and forgive. He wasn't going to stay mad at his best friend.
The two do their signature handshake like before, only now in a gentler way. Y/N rests a hand on Andres's shoulder and turns away, hanging his head.

HAILEE'S FRONT PORCH is covered with bouquets of flowers. The entire town had been showing their support and care for the Steinfelds after the Reverend revealed to everyone his daughter's worsening condition. Hailee had also been taken out of school to be home in peace.
Y/N strolls to Hailee's front porch and sets two more bouquets down. As he retreats, he sees Reverend Henry approaching the sidewalk with a neighbor.
"It's so nice to see you again." He tells her. "You're welcome. Watch yourself."
The woman goes. Reverend Henry turns to Y/N and sees him by the porch display.
"Y/N."
He walks down the steps and approaches the older man.
"I'm not going anywhere," Y/N says. "Please tell Hailee that."
Y/N leaves, all while Reverend Henry considers the young man's words.
Y/N is in his garage fixing something on his motorcycle. He circles the other side and looks up, surprisingly seeing Hailee. He stares at her grimly. The two approach each other slowly, awkwardly.
"I'm—I'm so sorry." She apologizes. "I really should've told you sooner."
"No, I made you do too many things." He immediately replies, thinking all the times they went out somehow kept her from seeking help. "I kept you out—"
"No, no, no." She interrupts. "If anything, you kept me healthy longer."
Hailee looks at him sadly. Y/N looks down for a second, then up at her, trying to work up the nerve to say something. Finally, he does.
"Are you scared?" He asks softly, his lower lip trembling.
"To death." She admits.
Y/N averts his eyes at those two purposeful words. He can't believe that she'd be joking about something like this. Hailee takes a step forward, smiling weakly.
"Lighten up."
He looks at her miserably. "It's not funny."
The two stare at each other. Hailee shuts her eyes and places her forehead against his. She tugs gently at his shirt collar.
Both stay that way for a moment—foreheads touching, eyes closed. She finally breaks away to look up at him. She still holds onto his collar.
"I'm scared of not being with you." She says with tears in her eyes.
Y/N's gaze falls on hers compassionately. Those words hurt him so much and he also couldn't fathom the thought of it. He isn't going to let her be alone through all of this.
He cups her face and replies softly.
"Oh, baby, that'll never happen, okay?"
Hailee nods, and Y/N hugs her tightly. The two embrace, and the boy doesn't want to let her go ever again.
"I'll be here." He promises her. "I'll be here."
That same night, Y/N is at home. He walks downstairs and approaches his mom, who sits on the couch reading.

90 miles outside Chicago...
"Mom?"
She looks up. "Hm?"
"Um... can you do me a favor?" He asks with a nervous smile.
Sometime later, Anna is teaching Y/N how to dance. He falters occasionally, stepping on her foot and stuff. Still, she encourages her son to try again.
Can't stop drivin' I don't know why
Too many questions I need an answer
Two years later you're still on my mind
Y/N keeps trying. Little by little, the young man starts to become more comfortable. Anna grins proudly at the progress he's made.
Whatever happened to Amelia Earhart?
Who holds the stars up in the sky?
Is true love just once in a lifetime?
Did the captain of the Titanic cry?
Y/N keeps dancing with his mother. He takes her hand and spins her around...
Y/N is spinning Hailee now. The two dance together on the balcony of her house. It's honestly the sweetest thing in the world. So much love.
Oh, someday we'll know
If love can move a mountain
Someday we'll know
Why the sky is blue
Someday we'll know
That I was the one for you
Y/N keeps her close and moves with her to the music. Their hands are entwined together, and his face is brushed up against her neck.
He backs away and spins her again before gently pulling her toward him. Her back is against his chest, and his arms are snaked across her stomach. They continue to sway to the music.
Yeah yeah yeah yeah
Someday we'll know why Samson loved Delilah
One day I'll go dancin' on the moon...
The couple sit on a bench in the park. The sun sets, and Hailee is asleep, resting on Y/N's shoulder.
Hailee's sweater is hanging slightly off her shoulder. Y/N gently strokes her arm and notices the sweater, where he places it back and kisses her forehead.
Someday you'll know that I was the one for you...

THE NEXT DAY, Y/N is in the cemetery getting Hailee's telescope from the shed to put in the Camry's trunk. Suddenly, Matthew pulls into the area in his truck.
Y/N looks up as Matthew cuts the ignition and exits his vehicle. He stands up and narrows his eyes, crossing his arms across his chest. Matthew approaches him rather timidly, still a reasonable distance away. Y/N unfolds his arms and places them on his hips.
"So, um...I talked to Andres." Matthew says.
Y/N just nods. There is an awkward pause. Matthew, like Andres, feels guilty about what he did before. He doesn't know exactly how to apologize.
"Need some help with this stuff?" He asks Y/N.
Y/N doesn't need an apology. Matthew's assistance and willingness to do so was all he could ask for. There was no more bad blood between them, and Y/N wouldn't harbor any hate.
"Sure." He replied with a nod.
Y/N grabs the telescope stand and hands it to Matthew. He picks up Hailee's telescope and puts it into the trunk of the Camry.
Hailee sleeps peacefully in her rather colorful room. Outside, the sound of electric sawing can be heard. The noise wakes the girl up, and she opens her eyes, sitting up.
The sawing is quickly replaced with loud hammering. The tired young woman gets out of bed and goes to her window. She sees Y/N down in her yard, making measurements and writing stuff down. Materials for the telescope surround him.
Moments later, Reverend Henry enters her room.
"Hailee, what's that boy doin' in the yard?" He asks.
She turns to her father, suddenly looking very, very sick. Henry looks at her worriedly.
"Hailee, what's the matter?"
Hailee doesn't answer him. Suddenly, she faints, collapsing into her father's arms. Reverend Henry begins to panic.
"Hailee, honey?!"
That night, Y/N sits by Hailee's side in the hospital room, holding her hand. She is fast asleep. He glances at Reverend Henry in the hallway, who is talking to a doctor.
A nurse enters the room, marks something down on her clipboard, picks up a pitcher on a table next to Hailee's bed, and leaves. Y/N watches Hailee resting peacefully, tubes tied up to her. He glances at the beeping monitor, then sighs softly.
Y/N and Hailee are both asleep now. Y/N still holds onto her hand. Hailee moves slightly. Y/N stirs and settles down to observe her quietly.
Y/N sleeps beside Hailee now, on her bed, his arm over her, subtly stroking her arm. He opens his eyes to look up at her.

IT IS THE MORNING. Reverend Henry peers into his daughter's hospital room to find Y/N sitting by Hailee's side. The boy settles back into his chair, his eyes closing. Henry enters the room as Y/N struggles to stay awake, but his eyes keep closing on him. The older man rests a hand on Y/N's shoulder.
"Y/N." He takes his hand away. "Go on home, son."
"I'm not tired." He lies.
"I need just a minute with her."
Y/N takes a moment before he leans forward to kiss Hailee's hand. She awakes and turns to him. He takes her hand.
"I'll be back, okay?" He says gently.
She nods. "Okay."
Y/N gets up and leaves. Hailee shuts her eyes as her father settles into the chair Y/N was in, rubbing his forehead. Hailee looks over at him and frowns.
"Daddy...so serious." She gingerly says.
Reverend Henry shakes his head no and takes her hand. He chuckles.
"Do you remember when you were about, um, five or six, and you said you hated gravity and you wanted to jump off the roof and fly?"
Hailee smiles and laughs. "I was so angry at you for making me come down."
"Honey, if I kept you too close, it's because I wanted to keep you longer."
Hailee frowns again. "Dad."
"You know, when I lost your mother...I was afraid that my heart would never open again." Henry pauses. "Hailee, I couldn't look at you for days...but then..."
There is a beat. Hailee looks at him.
"I love you so much." She says.
Reverend Henry bows his head down, crying quietly. Hailee places a hand on his head, and he places his hand over hers.

Y/N SITS IN a chair on his porch, lost in thought. Suddenly, Krystal approaches. He is surprised to see his ex-girlfriend and springs up from his seat.
"Hi." The girl greets.
"Hey."
She hands him a packet of pictures.
"I wanted to give you these." Krystal says.
The boy takes the packet. Krystal rubs the back of her neck.
"They're pictures from the play."
There is a pause. Her expression soon becomes apologetic.
"I'm sorry about before." She adds. "About...the photoshop. Sending it to..."
"Hey, it doesn't matter." Y/N interjects, already having chosen to forgive her and his other friends.
"Yeah." She replies quietly, then gets sad. "I guess you're with who you should be."
Y/N looks at her confusedly. She continues.
"It's like she chose you."
"Yeah." He smiles. "I don't even know why."
Krystal, near tears, replies. "I do."
Y/N doesn't know how to respond to that. He continues to hold the packet in his hands. Krystal smiles weakly and clears her throat.
"Well..."
She grabs his shoulders and kisses his cheek before hurriedly walking off. Y/N waits a moment before he opens the packet. Then he turns and walks the other way.
Hailee opens her eyes slowly and spots Y/N sitting by the window. He's drumming his fingers against his forehead and reading her copy of To Kill A Mockingbird. Nearby, the boy's Echo device is playing Passionfruit by Drake.
Listen
Seein' you got ritualistic
Cleansin' my soul of addiction for now
'Cause l'm fallin' apart, yeah
She also notices the balloons and flowers decorating the room, to which she smiles and sighs contentedly. She is more happy seeing her boyfriend reading the book.
Y/N looks up, smiling back at her.
"Hey." Y/N shuts the book then goes give to lower the music. He walks over to her. "How you feeling?"
"I'm okay." She replies. "How are you?"
Y/N leans in to kiss her cheek before sitting down on the bed, careful not to sit on her.
"Pretty good." He answers.
"I have something for you."
"You do?"
Hailee nods. "Mmhmm."
The girl reaches behind her to grab a book. She hands it to him. Y/N looks over it dubiously.
"Don't worry. It's not a Bible." She says, smiling. "It was my mother's. It's got quotes from our favorite books, quotes by famous people. Her thoughts."
Y/N leans forward to kiss her fingers. He holds her hand.
"C'mon." She says quietly, to which he smiles.
"Okay. Let's check it out."
Y/N flips to a page. He finds a quote and begins reading.
"What is a friend? It's a single soul dwelling in two bodies. Aristotle."
"Mmm." She points to another passage in the book. "Right here."
"Okay." Y/N looks at the quote. "Find out who you are and do it on purpose."
Hailee looks up at him thoughtfully. Y/N chuckles.
"That's Dolly Parton."
She smiles. "I always thought she was smart."
Y/N smiles as well and turns the pages. He finds another quote.
"A day without laughter is a day wasted. Charles Chaplin." He looks at her. "Oh, I like that one. It really speaks to me."
"I bet." Hailee smirks. "You're a real goofball."
Y/N laughs. He looks back at the book and reads another passage.
"Love is always patient and kind. It is never jealous."
Hailee shuts her eyes. Y/N continues.
"Love is never boastful or conceited."
The girl begins reciting with him since she knew the passage by heart. The two speak in unison.
"It is never rude or selfish. It does not take offense and it is not resentful."
Y/N sighs as Hailee opens her eyes. He shuts the book.
"You know what I figured out today?" Hailee asks him.
"What?"
She sighs and looks to the side.
"Maybe God...has a bigger plan for me than I had for myself. Like, this journey never ends. Like, you were sent to me because I'm sick...to help me through all this."
Y/N begins running his fingers over her cheek. She shuts her eyes and responds to his gentle caress. She then looks up at him.
"You're my angel." She adds with a smile.
He stares down at her lovingly, about to cry. Immediately, the two kiss. When they part, they gaze affectionately at each other.

THE NEXT DAY, Y/N pulls into an empty space in the hospital parking lot. He gets out of the Camry and jogs inside, eager for his usual visit.
Y/N goes to Hailee's room but immediately sees her in a wheelchair being wheeled out of the room by a male nurse. He's confused.
"Hey. What's going on?"
"Y/N, I get to go home," Hailee replies happily. "Please, thank your father for me."
Reverend Henry is exiting her hospital room as the nurse wheels Hailee away. Y/N, still bewildered, turns to the older man.
"What does she mean?" He asks.
"Your father's been trying to reach you." Reverend Henry answers. "He's gonna pay for private home care."
The reverend walks off. Y/N stands for a moment alone...deep in thought.
That evening, Y/N is outside his father's Thousand Oaks home. He knocks gently on the door before circling the porch, his hands in his jeans pockets.
The door opens. David L/N looks at him.
Y/N exhales a shaky breath, his eyes already starting to tear up.
"Thank you." Y/N says rather lowly.
Y/N isn't sure how to express what he is feeling. What his father did meant a lot to the Steinfelds and to him. Y/N thought his uncomplicated thanks wouldn't be enough.
But to David, those two simple words were all he needed. Y/N honestly didn't have to say them...or anything for that matter.
David nods and puts his hand on Y/N's shoulder firmly. Y/N immediately pulls him closer and embraces him tightly, beginning to sob.
"Sorry." The young man finally apologizes.
Y/N is sorry for all the years he tried to push him away. For the entire time he spent trying to hate him. For throwing away all the chances before when David tried to mend their bond. The boy forgave him, and now he hopes his father can do the same.
But for David, there was no wrongdoing of Y/N's to forgive. He has always loved his son and understood his plights. All that matters now...is the moment they are currently sharing.
"That's all right, Y/N," David whispers, holding him tightly. "It's all right."
