Hurt
Up on the hill across the blue lake
That's where I had my first heart break
I still remember how it all changed
My father said
Don't you worry, don't you worry child
~Don't You Worry Child ~ Swedish House Mafia~
...December 14, 2016...
Sitting in my room, I suddenly get a call on my communicator. The one Catwoman gave me. I answer it with an annoyed face.
"What do you want?"
"You're coming with me to steal a cat statue at Gotham Museum tonight. Meet you there in 30 minutes. See ya!"
She hangs up and I growl annoyed. Storm lifts her head and looks up at me.
I grin. "Wanna come?"
~Obviously.~
"Then let's get ready." I set aside what I was doing and transform into my Jester Quinn suit. We head downstairs to find momma in the kitchen.
"I was just about to call you down to dinner," she says, wiping her hands off on a towel. She tosses the towel in a heap on the counter.
"Aunty Selina wants me to go help her steal a cat statue in 30 minutes," I tell her. "Can I go?" Say no.
Say yes.
"Yes, but eat your dinner before you go," she says.
"Cool," I nod, internally groaning.
~~~
I meet up with Catwoman on the roof of the museum.
"You're here early, kitten." She slinks out from the shadows. "I see you brought Storm too."
"Don't want you running off to tell Batsy my secret," I scoff, crossing my arms. "She wanted to get out and have some fun."
She chuckles. "Do your little electric thing and cut off all the security alarms. You know the drill."
"Yeah, yeah," I wave off, entering the building and taking care of just that. I reappear on the roof when I finish. "Done."
She cuts a hole in the glass with her claws and I vibrate it so it shatters into a million tiny dust pieces to not make the crashing sound. Catwoman pats me on the head before jumping inside with Storm and me right behind. We make our way through the museum in search of the cat statue. After a few minutes of searching, we make it to the statue and she carefully cuts another hole in the glass then pulls out the cat.
"Come to momma, gorgeous..."
"Up to the same catnapping schemes, huh?" a young voice calls out.
Two light thuds are dropped to the floor behind us. We turn to see Robin and Batman. Storm growls.
Catwoman turns to me. "I thought you cut off all the alarms?"
"I did. They must of had their own alarm," I say, glaring at the Dynamic Duo.
"Correct," Robin grins. "We knew you'd come for the cat. Didn't think you'd bring Jester Quinn though."
"My parents aren't doing anything fun tonight, figured I'd go out with Aunt Catty," I joke.
"I told you not to call me that!" Catwoman complains.
"You're a crazy cat lady what do you expect me to call you?" I ask. "Anyway, Storm help Catty take down Batsy, yeah?"
The two lunge at him while Robin makes his way to me.
"You associate with all the villains?" he questions.
"Most of them," I reply, getting into a fighting stance. "How are those ribs feeling?"
"Healed no thanks to you," he scoffs, pullling out his eskrima sticks.
I smirk. "You really think you'll get close enough to me to actually get a hit on me with those things?"
"I guess we'll find out!" he says, leaping toward me.
I stick out a hand and throw him back with a blast of electricity. "Not even close." I form some eskrima sticks of my own made of electricity. "How about I let you get close? Hope you have protection from electric shocks."
He gets up with a groan. "Don't worry... we have rubber laced in our suits now because of you."
"Aw, how sweet."
He twirls his sticks around in his hands before heading towards me again. Our sticks clash and I send electricity down his.
He smirks. "These are coated in rubber too."
"Nice touch. It won't save you from this though." I knee him in the stomach.
He keels back some but still holds his position, so I do it again this time making him drop his guard and sucker punching him in the face. He huffs, glaring at me. I taunt him, making a come at me motion with my hand. Catwoman and Storm have moved a little ways away from us while fighting Batman.
Robin slinks into the shadows. His little cackles echo around the room. "Catch me if you can."
"Oh, you know how much I like to play games," I reply, lighting up the room with my power. I find him after a few seconds. "Found you, little bird." I shoot a beam behind me at him that he skillfully dodges.
I continue to hurl bolts at him from afar until one skims his side, making him lose his footing for a second before regaining it. I leap up to his level and kick his side. He catches my leg and twists it, spinning me around. Then he throws me back to the ground. I land with a hard thud on my back.
"That felt good," Robin smirks.
"Not for me," I groan.
He jumps down, planning to land on my chest. I somersault backwards to dodge. He lands and I swipe his legs from underneath him. He lands on his back with a thud.
"Okay, that didn't feel good..."
"Felt pretty good to me," I mimic, charging up a ball of power. "Say nighty night, little bird."
He throws down a smoke bomb before I can hit him. My feet are swiped from under me. I backflip to land normally only to get kicked to the side. My arms turn into electricity and light up the whole smoke cloud, making it easier to see his shadow. I dispel the smoke around us.
He manages to get close and punch my stomach.
"Kitten, time to go!" Catwoman calls out.
"Ta-ta, little birdy," I wave goodbye as I head out.
He tries to stop me and grabs a hold of my hat. I turn to him in annoyance as a strand of my green hair falls into my face. His eyes widen and he drops his grip on my hat. I give him a spinning kick while he's distracted and rush away behind Catwoman. Storm jumps off Batman and follows.
"Good job tonight, kitten," Catwoman compliments. "Couldn't of done it without you."
I adjust my hat to normal, stuffing my hair back into it. "Robin saw my hair color."
"That's too bad," she replies. She holds up the cat statue, admiring it. "Well, I'm going to go put this beauty in a nice spot at home. Meet me at my place December 30th. I'll see you then, kitten." She tucks the statue away and leaps off the building with a wave.
I sigh, heading home with Storm.
...December 15, 2010...
I enter the first class of the day, plopping myself in my seat beside Richy. "Hi, Richy!"
He ignores me, enthralling himself on his phone.
I tilt my head to the side confused.
"Morning, Dawn," Chad greets.
"Uh, hey, Chad," I wave off, concern lacing my features. "Richy? You okay?" He doesn't answer. I wave my hand in front of his face. "Hellooo?" He turns his back to me. "Richy?"
~~~
Lunch time rolls around. Richy has been ignoring me all day. I sit in my normal spot and Artemis comes to sit with me. Richy enters the cafeteria and goes to sit at Barbara's table with her friends.
Artemis notices this and looks back to me. "What's going on with him?"
"I don't know. He won't talk to me for some reason," I admit. "Did I do something wrong?"
"I don't think so," Artemis responds.
Our other friends come to sit with us, noticing the missing Wayne.
"Why's he sitting over there?" Bette asks.
"We don't know," Artemis answers.
~~~
The last class of the day. Science. Richy continues to ignore me.
"Richy? Did I do something wrong?" I try to ask again only to receive silence.
"Dick?!" Artemis huffs out.
"What?" he answers her.
My eyes widen.
"Why are you ignoring, Dawn?" she asks.
"Dawn? I don't know a Dawn," he huffs.
I make a small hurt gasp, turning away my downcast expression.
...December 17, 2010...
It's Friday and for the past couple days, Richy has been ignoring me. Halfway through the class, Richy leaves to the bathroom. A few minutes pass before I ask to go as well, surprised the teacher let me. Must know that the two of us are having problems. I head towards the bathrooms, leaning on the wall opposite of the boy's bathroom for Richy. A few minutes pass before the door opens and he comes out. He spots me and tries to go in the other direction.
"I don't think so. Not so fast," I say, moving towards him and trapping him between me and the wall. "We need to talk. I'm tired of you ignoring me." He doesn't look me in the eyes. His head stays turned to the side, eyeing the floor. "Why are you doing this? It... hurts. I don't like not knowing what I possibly did wrong. What did I do?"
"You lied to me." He turns to look me in the eyes with a harsh glare.
"Lied to you? About what?" I ask.
"Who your father is."
"Who my father is?"
"That your father's the Joker."
My eyes widen. "And how'd you come to that assumption?"
"Because you're Jester Quinn."
"And why would you think that?"
"Jester Quinn has green hair just like you."
"So you're just going to assume that every green haired girl in Gotham is Jester Quinn?" I huff. "Besides, how would you even know she has green hair?"
"I'm not assuming anything! Selina Kyle is your 'aunt' and I'm sure you know exactly what she does in her past time at night!" I remain quiet. "You and her robbed a museum the other night!"
Smart boy.
"How do you even know things like this?" I huff. He remains silent, turning his head to the side again. "No. No way." I fakingly widen my eyes in shock.
"You figure it out?" he asks annoyed.
"You're Robin, aren't you? That'd... make so much sense..." I mutter. I gasp, suddenly remembering our rooftop conversation. "Wait! Then that means the girl you have a crush on is me!"
"Not anymore," he scoffs.
"Richy, I'm not Jester Quinn," I tell him.
More lies.
"I don't believe you," he scowls. "Now, move so I can get back to class."
"No!" I huff. "I can't live like this. I don't want you to hate me. Friends shouldn't fight like this."
"You should've thought of that before you became a villain," he scoffs, forcefully removing my arm out of the way.
I grab his wrist. "Richy..."
He yanks his hand out of my grasp. "Don't call me that and don't talk to me." He walks down the hall. "And we're not friends." He disappears around the corner.
I'm frozen, feeling as I was just shattered into a million pieces. I punch the wall, creating a hole which starts to drop little crumbles as I move my hand out. I move to lean on the wall.
Before I know it I'm running home with a few tears going down my cheeks.
