Scene Eighteen

Arrogance And Hypocrisy

°♡°

"Good afternoon, team." I greet the team seated in front of me.

"Afternoon, coach!" they greet back in unison.

"I hope you guy guys are prepped up because today's practice is going to be intense," I say, receiving groans and complaints from all twenty of them – nothing new.

"Come on, guys." I sigh, not having the patience to deal with their whining. "I know it's been four weeks since our last game and we came back home with a W, but that doesn't mean we should be relaxing and taking it easy. If y'all don't like this arrangement, you are more than welcome to leave and kiss your chances of getting scholarships goodbye."

The team goes silent.

"Alright," I say, jumping straight into today's business. "We're going start with our usual warmups then I'm going to divide you into three groups. One group will be at the cones perfecting their ball handling, the other will be working on passing and the last group will be at the goalpost practising their shooting. I'll be rotating the groups after every thirty minutes until practice is over. Are we clear?"

"Yes, coach!"

"Alright! Let's get to it!"

Practice goes as planned. We jogged around the field for about twenty minutes and finish off our warmup session with ten minutes of stretching. Afterwards, I grouped my students and assigned them their tasks.

I spent the past hour monitoring their progress with watchful and stern eyes while rotating them to the next task after thirty minutes. I blow my whistle, alerting them that the thirty minutes are up and gesticulate my hands in a rotational motion, telling them to switch.

"Urie!"

I snap my attention towards the direction I hear my name. There, I see Vinny saunter towards my direction.

"Wazzgood, my brutha." He greets me with a brotherly hug. "I hope you're not planning to rip these kids limb to limb."

"Just making sure that they're not falling behind," I tell him. "As their coach, I want them to be at their best and don't want to waste their potential."

"Good, good." He replies nodding. "Hey, can I talk to you for a bit?"

"Can it wait until practice is over? I really need to supervise the team." I say.

"It won't take long. I promise."

I stare at him, hesitation and reluctance lingering in my eyes until I relent with a sigh. "Joshua! I'm leaving you in charge!" I call, catching the attention of the team captain.

"You got it, coach!" he calls back, giving me a thumbs up.

I return the gesture before taking Vinny to the bench where can have our conversation.

"What's up?" I ask the moment we both sit down.

"I've been noticing some passive aggression between you and Feenyx for the past week." He states. "Mind telling me what that's about?"

I clench my jaw, already feeling my mood turn sour as I avert my eyes from his. I do agree that Feenyx and I haven't been on speaking terms as of late after our argument and I've been avoiding her ever since. The only times we ever say a word to each other is either during class or when she asks for anything work-related.

"Well?" Vinny inquires, waiting for my answer.

"Ask her," I reply dismissively.

"I already did." He says.

"Then why ask me?" I glance at him.

"Because I want to hear your side of your story to get the full picture."

I exhale a sigh through my nostrils and press my lips together as I look anywhere but at him. Vinny watches me attentively waiting for me to speak.

"I'm guessing she already told you that I slept with Toni and how she's not thrilled about it."

"Why did you sleep with Toni?" he asks. "After everything you went through."

There's silence.

"Worse of all, she's engaged, Urie." He emphasises.

"Stefan left her." I retort, throwing him a frustrated look.

"Did she tell you or are you assuming?" Vinny arches an eyebrow.

"She implied it," I argue.

"Just because she implied it don't mean she confirmed it, Urie." He argues back. "Toni has always been vague about her fallouts with Stefan. You know this. But here you are just taking her word for it without even questioning it."

"Are you done?" I ask, throwing him an indignant look. "I have a team to coach and I'm not going to sit here listening to you berate me over something that happened in the spur of the moment. I already my fill of it from Feenyx."

Vinny sighs and looks at me seriously. "Listen, I know Feenyx should have phrased her words better but she's not wrong and I know that you know that she's not wrong." Vinny reasons. "You've been in this cycle for two years. You know the start and end of it, so I don't understand why you're putting yourself through it again and again."

"I think this conversation is over. I have work to do." I stand up and leave.

For the greater part of the day until evening, my conversation with Vinny kept replaying in my head despite my efforts of pushing it behind and distracting myself with work to avoid thinking about it.

And while I don't want to admit it, he's not exactly wrong and it's something that I myself have observed over the past two years this cycle has gone on for. Though Toni presents herself as very well-spoken and honest in the way she carries herself, she hasn't always been the type to talk about her problems, her struggles and what she feels. Even if you ask her directly, she'll brush you off easily or passively aggressively tell you to drop it.

"Ey, Yuri."

I'm broken out of my absentminded daze, meeting Feenyx's blank eyes. "You have a visitor." She announces.

"I wasn't expecting anyone," I state.

"Well your girlfriend is already here and I don't think she really cares." She scoffs, rolling hers before muttering something about me getting used to having Toni come over unannounced. "She's in the kitchen waiting for ya. Seems important."

"Did she tell you?"

"Hell if I know. She's your problem. Ask her yourself." She retorts.

"Feenyx," I call, stopping her in her tracks before she leaves. "I know that we're not on good terms but I would really appreciate it if you had some decency and show me some respect."

Her blank gaze lingers on me until she lets out a sarcastic chuckle as if I had just cracked a joke. "Respect? Respect is something you earn – not demand. I'm under no obligation to respect someone who can't even respect himself."

Silence drapes over us like a blanket. The air becomes tense and brittle.

"I'll be in my room." She makes a one-eighty-degree turn and leaves the premise of my room.

Letting out a breath I didn't know I was holding; I stand up from my desk and leave for the kitchen, where I find my guest seated at the kitchen island awaiting my presence.

"Hey," I greet her.

"Hey." She greets back, meeting my gaze.

There's silence.

"You could have called and told me that you're coming over," I say.

"So you can hide your lady roommate?" She asks, venom dripping from her tone.

I swallow the lump in my throat and don't say a word.

"How long has she been living here?" she asks.

I lean back against the cabinet and allow my eyes to wander around the room as I count back how long it had been since Feenyx first appeared in my apartment. "About a month now."

"Why didn't you tell me?"

I gaze at her, confusion lingering in my eyes. "I didn't think it was worth mentioning."

"You mean you didn't think it was worth mentioning after you slept with me." Her response slaps me across the face.

I scoff at the hypocrisy in her statement. "As if you're any different, Toni."

She squints her eyes. "The hell is that supposed to mean?"

"If I remember correctly, you're the one who came me over to your place and initiated the move that led to us having sex."

"Well, you could have – "

"Don't pin this whole thing on me just so you can win an argument." I cut her off firmly. "You knew exactly what you were doing that night."

She looks away and clenches her jaw, no words are said to refute my statement,

"And since we're talking about dishonesty, when have you ever been honest with me about your relationship with Stefan, huh?" I ask. "If anything, the little that I know of it along with my judgement and observations are merely just scraps of the truth."

"It's not your business."

"And whoever decides to live in my apartment isn't yours."

"That's different."

"How?! How is it different?!"

"How am I supposed to feel about seeing another woman live in your apartment a week after you had sex with me?! Obviously, I would feel used and taken advantage of!"

"I guess you now know how I feel seeing you crawl back to that bastard and act like we never slept with each other."

"You're an arrogant asshole!"

"And you're a hypocrite!"

"FUCK YOU!" she screams at the top of her lungs, standing up on her feet.

"FUCK YOU!" my voice booms, causing an echo to travel out of the kitchen.

I can still hear the ringing in my ears due to the shouts and screams as we are panting and looking at each other furiously, standing face to face. I can see the anger twinkle in her cocoa eyes.

Suddenly, the air around us changes and before I know it, we're all over each other, lips locked and smacking aggressively against each other. I'm carrying her to my room where we strip each other naked.
