07: Rain

CHAPTER SEVEN

❝Rain❞

Unfortunate is my middle name.

I feel like the world hates me so much, it has to punish me on a daily basis.

It was Monday, July 1st, the first day of summer camp, and yes, I decided to actually go. I figured I haven't done much in my summer (or my life, in general), so might as well try something else new.

I decided to do my hair on a half-up half-down space buns, with red strong ribbons keeping them in place. I wore cotton shorts, and the camp shirt, which was a sparkling shade black quartz. It had the camp's logo imprinted on the center—a Bouvardia flower in light pink violet colors.

Just like the name of the camp: Camp Bouvardia.

It's really pretty. I thought.

I'm an aesthete, meaning I have a special appreciation for art and beauty. Pastel colors are especially aesthetically pleasing to my eyes. I also like cute things, and I was embarrassed of showing my aesthetics to the public eye at first. However, Pink helped me to overcome that ridiculous embarrassment.

I discovered a shortcut to the camp, and it was close just on foot, so I decided to walk towards there.

The sun shone brightly down Earth and all things below it. The sky was so clear, and all the clouds were fluffy-looking and floated in ease; not a day you'd expect rain.

It didn't seem too long when I came out from my house, though that could be because I never really pay attention to the time, when I felt a raindrop kiss the skin of my nose. I glanced up at the sky, holding my hand out, and could see specks of raindrops making their way to the ground.

I silently cursed. I didn't bring an umbrella. I looked up and could see the skies getting darker by the minute.

Summer Lie #7: I brought an umbrella, mom. Thanks. Bye.

Hopefully, it won't rain too hard. I thought, picking up my pace.

At the same time that thought crossed my mind, the sky made a thundering sound which immediately followed by a lightning.

Then the rain dropped.

Hard. Like my grades.

I stopped on my tracks and focused on nothing in particular, so long as it was a part of the heavens. I could feel my heliotrope eyes practically bulging out of their sockets, dark in shade. My teeth grinded in annoyance.

Screw you, Zeus.

The mass of liquid continued pouring on me as I ran, seeking for shelter. There were literally houses everywhere, but I don't want to bother talking to people—people I don't know, mind you.

Finally, I spotted a bus stop shelter just around the corner. I ran as fast as I could, not wanting to get anymore wet, though that was pointless by that point since I was practically soaking head to toe.

I perched my butt on the wooden bench, threw my sling bag on the side, and let out a breath that I didn't realize I've been holding.

Silence.

Rain continued trickling against the window of the shelter. There was no sign of people where I was. The sound of every drop was as clear as my shrouded mind.

I sighed and glanced at my wet bag. I snatched it and rummaged through the damp papers, which were all for the camp, until my fingers touched my phone. I took it out and stared at the sight of my reflection on the screen.

Once again, I, Adelaide Summer, am a mess.

07:50 AM. The time read. I threw it back inside my bag.

Great. Camp starts in ten minutes, and I am a saggy, drooping, trashy mess.

I contemplated whether I should make a quick run for it to the camp and not just care about the rain. However, another part of me didn't want to; I was drying up too.

I slammed my face on my hands and let out a frustrated groan.

"Ade?" A familiar voice spoke.

My head shot up, making my wet hair slap my face.

Cole laughed, closing his umbrella as he sat beside me. "What are you doing here?"

"What does it look like I'm doing?" I muttered, taking my bag from the seat so he could have space.

"Like you've been going out for a happy walk, then got caught in the rain," He grinned, his icy blue eyes twinkling in amusement. He had a black parka over a black shirt and blue ripped jeans.

I sighed. "I was heading somewhere, and then yeah, Zeus decides to curse me," I shot daggers at the sky. At the exact moment, it made a rumbling sound.

He clicked his tongue. "I'll share you my umbrella."

"Thank you. I've been waiting for you to say that."

He smiled again, revealing his left dimple. "Honest as always."

Cole held a hand out and helped me up. I slung my sling bag around me as he opened his umbrella. He held the umbrella over the both of us. We then started heading towards our destinations.

"By the way," Cole brushed his blonde locks. "Where exactly were you going to go?"

"To this camp—"

"Hold up. Camp Bouvardia?" He glanced at me, a surprised expression plastered on his face.

A smile tugged on my lips at his funny look. "In fact, yes."

"Cool. We might be cabin-mates," He said, grinning.

I snorted. "Tell that to the manager."

He just continued grinning then focused his eyes on the road.

This dude smiles a lot, it's contagious. That's one of the things I liked about Cole. He was a very cool person and easy to get along. I can see why Pink really likes him.

We talked a little about what we did over the summer and what we've been doing. I sure didn't have much to tell but he did, and it involved many sports and outdoor activities.

Not too long, we finally reached the entrance of the camp. I stared in awestruck at the make-over it has been given, possibly for a welcome to new and old campers.

A huge colorful banner hung on the front entrance. 'Welcome to Camp Bouvardia' it said.

As Cole and I entered the building, a lady around her 30's and dressed the same shirt as us, came up and handed a two to three paged paper. She smiled. "Welcome! Look for your names on the list and you'll see the cabin you're assigned to. We will later be gathering once you've settled in your cabins."

Cole was quicker to react than I was in these types of situations. "Thank you. We appreciate your help."

We both looked through the list of names and found out we were both in the same cabin.

Cabin C.

"C for cool," He chuckled.

I gave him a light punch on the shouler. "Whatever. Let's find our cabin."
