Rain picked up a shrew from the fresh kill pile, which within the past quarter moon had been very full. That was a great thing, considering it hadn't even been a moon since SorrowedSky had the kits. And almost every cat had gone mad trying to see them.
As Rain picked up the pace towards the nursery, one of the older kits in the nursery, Waspkit, tumbled over his paws mewling in excitement. Rain took a pace backward and let out a purr, "could you kits be any clumsier?" He nudged the kit with his paw, who squealed in excitement.
"Let me go!" Waspkit leaped up and lashed his tail playfully "don't make me claw your fur off!!"
Blinking, as if he were surprised, he stepped back "Waspkit, please spare me! I didn't mean to!" He widened his eyes to look as frightened as possible, lowering himself.
Waspkit giggled and then cleared his throat, composing himself as he stepped forward and sniffed at the shrew that Rain had been holding. "And stealing prey!? Why you...!" Waspkit was about to pounce before his sister Sagekit called out to him "you nasty rouge!!" And leaped on him.
Purring, Rain stepped back and watched the two tumble for a few moments before padding into the nursery and dropping the prey at his mates paws. "I brought you prey, how are the kits?" He meowed, two of the kits were sleeping except Vinekit who was suckling greedily.
SorrowedSky stretched before sitting up and mustering a bite of the prey, and then immediately devouring it. "They are wonderful, FogWhisper checked up on them while you were out on border patrol and said all of them are strong! I'm so proud of them."
"As am I." Rain purred watching the kits, before meowing quietly, "if only Winter had been here to see them, he would have loved the three." Rain winced as he remembered his brother who he had to leave behind as kits to be forced to join the clans, and even with the slightest chance that he was, rain knew he probably didn't live.
He shook his head, ignoring the thoughts of his brother as his mate began speaking. "I'm sure winter would have adored them. Oh! And their eyes should be opening soon, FogWhisper informed me of such."
Rain unsheathed his claws in excitement"that's wonderful! They'll be able to see! Then talk! Then walk!" He purred, tail flicking in anticipation as he bent down to bathe the three kits.
SorrowedSky purred, her voice just as anticipated as him. "They will be the best kits in the clan, I promise you that. And you are the best father in the clan!" She purred pressing her nose against his, and he swayed his tail in delight.
"What about CanineClaw?" Rain meowed flicking his ears playfully. "He's a wonderful father, b-" SorrowedSky was interrupted by Sagekit, Waspkit, and Foxkit trodding in.
Foxkit wagged her tail slowly in excitement, "when can the kits play!?"
She squeaked loudly.
"Yeah! When can they?"
"Will they be able to talk soon?"
"When will their eyes open?"
When will we be able to fight with them!?"
"When wi-"
The three questions were interrupted by SorrowedSky, who's voice was stern but kind "soon, don't worry, soon I promise."
Suddenly, Ripplekit padded inside , curling up in his mother's nest. "Oh for starclans sake. You'll forget about these kittypet kits as soon as you become apprentices. I mean come on, your acting like a bunch of elders."
Rain glanced up, and suddenly he saw the black cat, with the red eyes, but this time it morphed into him and immediately he felt a surge of anger. "What did you just say about us? And MY kits? You useless little piece of crowfood I'll rip you to shreds!"
Ripplekit shrank down, ears pinned to his head "y...y...your crazy!!" He hissed, a hint of worry and fear in his tone. Suddenly, Rain saw the cat again, and it morphed from him, into itself again. Rains ears rang and he shifted his claws on the forest floor.
"Rain! What in starclans name is the matter with you!?" He heard SorrowedSky hiss and flick her tail to call him over. He padded over to her slowly, blinking in surprise. "I..-iΒ dont know what happened?? I was just-" he shook his head slowly.
"I think you need some prey, darling. Because that wasn't very kind, go get yourself a piece of prey and when your normal, come back." She snarled, and Rain flinched, she wasn't the type of cat to growl at something that seemed like such a minor inconvenience, so he knew she was serious. "okay, sorry." He murmured before padding towards the pile of fresh kill.
