ch. 45
"KING tomura, please reconsider! princess nanako is not fit to be the queen!!", one of tomura's advisors said.
tomura was annoyed. he's been telling them for 5 minutes straight that he will not accept anyone else but nanako.
"why not marry one of our daughters then princess nanako? she could be one of your consorts", another one stated.
nanako entered just in time. if the advisors continued any further, dabi wasn't sure he'd be able to keep tomura calm any longer.
"w-what're you doing here?! it's been tradition that the queen is the only woman allowed in a king's court!", one of the advisors reprimanded.
"she's my fiancé, thus, the future queen. I allowed her to be here", tomura said.
"advisor daizō, are you telling me to share what's mine?", nanako said as she entered through the side door. everyone's attention was on the young princess. despite not approving her, they could definitely agree that she was a beauty.
"my apologies princess nanako, however king tomura needs someone that can serve him by his side", daizō said. "and not someone who's so...", he hesitated.
"so what? advisor daizō? rambunctious? bratty? unworthy of your king?!", nanako questioned.
advisor daizō immediately bowed. "n-no! that's not what I meant princess. please, forgive me if I came off that way!! it's just..."
"it's just that perhaps king tomura could use someone who's more calm, to stand beside him. we're not objecting you two's marriage. it's just that perhaps king tomura could marry another woman first", another advisor said.
"I told you, I'm not—". tomura was cut off by nanako's stare.
turning her attention back to the advisors, nana spoke again.
"advisor nobuyoshi, tell me, what is it that you think I lack?", nanako questioned.
"femininity". a short answer was given.
"oh? and why's that?", nana asked, not surprised by the answer.
"princess nanako, if I may ask", advisor daizō said.
"go on". tomura just sat back and enjoyed the show. nanako was about to destroy them and he'd be lying if he said he wasn't going to enjoy it.
"might I dare ask, can you cook?", daizō questioned.
"why would I need to when both our kingdoms are full of people who are willing to serve us?", nana responded.
"then can you dance?", advisor nobuyoshi asked.
"I can dance with a sword. although usually it's called dueling", nanako joked, making dabi snort and tomura smirk.
the advisors started whispering amongst themselves. "then can you raise a proper child?", another advisor asked.
"well we wouldn't know since we aren't married yet, are we?", nanako sassed back.
dabi straight up started laughing while tomura tried to hold in his smile. the rest of the advisors started gritting their teeth at being disrespected.
"tell me, advisors. if you could sum up your ideal queen for your king, what would it be?", nanako asked.
the advisors started talking. many words were thrown around. such as beautiful, smart, kind, motherly, and many more. after a while of discussing, they finally came to a conclusion.
"well?"
"we have come to the agreement of the word outstanding", advisor nobuyoshi said.
"and you all said yalls daughters would be the perfect queen, am I right?"
"of course! my daughter has been taking lessons since—"
"MY daughter has also been taking lessons since she was young! she's the perfect—"
"alright, shut up about your daughters and let nanako talk!", tomura said.
they complied and immediately stopped talking.
"now, since you guys are so persistent about your daughters being better than me. how about we have a little competition then?", nanako proposed.
"nana, you don't have to—"
"my dear king tomura, of course I have to prove myself to them. how else would I be allowed to stand by your side as the one and only queen?", nanako said, smiling. her emerald eyes glimmered, daringly entrancing.
tomura sighed, sitting back once again. dabi whispered, "are you really going to let nanako do this?"
"she's too stubborn. plus, I don't see why not", tomura replied. dabi nodded.
"then what do you suggest, princess nanako?", advisor daizō asked.
"a dancing competition. how about it?", nanako asked. "the theme would be outstanding".
daizō and nobuyoshi agreed. "who will be the judges? we don't want biased opinions", they said.
"how about the previous king, all for one?"
gasps were heard all around the court. everyone knew that all for one was a brutal man. and to have him judge such a silly competition, they suddenly weren't so certain anymore.
"fine!", daizō said. "two days from now, we'll have the competition outside on the courtyard".
"deal!", nanako said as she shook on it with daizō.
"are you not worried about nanako? didn't she just say she can't dance? and not to mention, your father is brutally honest", dabi whispered to tomura.
tomura clenched his fists. "believe in her, she knows what she's doing. plus, just look into her eyes. they tell you that she's confident that she'll win".
nana returned to tomura's side. standing beside him, nanako smiled. she placed her hand on top of tomura's, making him more relaxed.
"sire, may we get on with actual business now?", an advisor asked.
"sure. dabi, go get nanako a chair to sit next to me", tomura commanded.
dabi was about to leave before someone stopped him.
"sire! please reconsider. princess nanako isn't a queen, and since the beginning of history, only queens are allowed to stay by the king's side during court time", the advisor said.
"advisor shūsaku, are you trying to—"
nanako stopped tomura by squeezing his hand, making him take a deep breath in then out. giving him a smile, she spoke.
"advisor shūsaku, you're right. I'm not a queen, so I can't sit beside him".
"great! thank you for understa—"
"since I'm not a queen, I'll just sit on his lap. then I'm not beside him anymore, right?", nanako asked, putting on her best smile.
nanako did what she said and sat on tomura's lap, making everyone stunned.
"y-you...y-you...YOU!"
tomura started smiling while nanako wrapped her arms around tomura's neck.
"enough! like she said, she's not sitting beside me, so let's get this meeting started", tomura announced.
the rest of the advisors thought they were going to have a heart attack from how inappropriate the princess was being. however, nonetheless, they began discussing the kingdom's matters.
the rest of the meeting was spent with tomura trying his best to focus on the issues at hand. it was very hard for him to not want to just cuddle and smother nanako in kisses.
nanako listened in here and there. she kept note of what the advisors were saying and what tomura responded with.
she was getting excited by the challenge that's to come, in two days. her eyes were beaming with confidence.
a sly grin slowly made its way onto her face.
