(t/w: mentions of kidnapping, murder, implied SA)

Dolley Madison Barnes was the younger sister of Bucky Barnes, The Winter Soldier. A master codebreaker, she went to Germany to decrypt messages for the American troops. She was trapped as a crystal at the bottom of the ocean for years. Then she grew older, made friends, and reunited with her brother. At least, that who she was in your universe.

In this one, she was The Winter Soldier.

-

1943

Dolley sat in the troop's camp, scribbling on a piece of paper. It seemed like she was writing completely random letters. One of the soldiers, a man named Josiah Clampett, came up behind her.

"Whatcha got there? Sumthin' from the Germans?" he asked, putting a hand on the girl's shoulder.

Her cheeks flushed. "Uh- no. It's a letter to my friend from back home. Steve."

Josiah gave her a sly grin. "Your boyfriend?"

Dolley's cheeks went redder. She hid her face in her letter. "No...my brother's friend."

The man laughed, a loud sound. Dolley decided that if Santa Claus were real, he would sound like Josiah. A deep belly laugh that made one want to chuckle themselves.

"I'm just pickin', I'm just pickin'," Josiah said, clapping Dolley on the shoulder. She laughed softly as the man walked away. Then she turned back to her letter and continued writing.

Hours passed. It grew dark. Dolley settled down to sleep in a tent she was given.

That night, the Germans attacked.

Dolley woke up to hands grabbing her, pinning her down. She tried to scream, but someone was covering her mouth. She tried to fight, but the men holding her were too strong.

"This must be the girl," one of the men said in a thick German accent.

Another man looked at her, examining her closely. Dolley had never felt more like a doll in her life. "Ja, it is the Barnes girl the boss wanted," he said. "Bind her hands. We don't want her to fight."

The first man grabbed some rope and tied Dolley's hands together. However, she did try to fight. She kicked and tried to scream. But the soldier easily overpowered her. He slung her over his shoulder and carried her out.

The camp was in disarray. Bodies of slaughtered men were everywhere, tents fallen to the ground.

"Somebody, help!" Dolley screamed. She prayed one of the Americans would hear, and save her-

But it was hopeless.

"They're all dead, kleines Mädchen," the second German said. "We snuck up on them. They were all dead before you even woke up."

Dolley felt tears well in her eyes. "What do you want from me?" she asked, her voice a whimper.

"The boss has big plans for you, kleines Mädchen," the man said. "Johann, she doesn't need to ask any more questions."

Without another word, the first soldier hit her in the head, successfully knocking her unconscious.

--

Later, Dolley woke up in the back of an armored vehicle. Her hands were unbound in front of her, a bag over her head. She sat quietly for a moment, listening.

"She is the codebreaker, ja?" one of the soldiers said to another.

"Ja," the other man confirmed. "The one the boss wants."

Dolley froze in fear. Someone wanted her? Who? Hitler?

She didn't know. All she knew was that she was scared. So scared.

She had to get away.

She listened closely. Her captors seemed to be situated on either side of her. She could feel their bodies pressed against hers. No one was across from her.

"Are we almost there?" one of the men asked, leaning towards what Dolley assumed was the front of the vehicle.

This was her chance. She pulled the bag off and leapt for the back of the van.

A soldier swore. He grabbed for her, but she ducked under his arms. She tried to open the door. But it was no use.

One of the men grabbed her by the hair. He hauled her back, twisting her dark curls. "Mädchen," he hissed.

Dolley struggled, kicking and hitting her captors.

"Maybe the boss can use this one for more than her brains," a man said from the front of the truck.

The man holding Dolley's hair held her hands still so his companion could bind them again. "Maybe," he replied.

1949

Dolley Madison Barnes was dead. In her place was the Winter Soldier.

And the Winter Soldier had a mission.

In this house was a little girl. Her name was Elizabeth Mary Maxwell. Known by friends and family as Ellie.

HYDRA wanted her.

So the Winter Soldier would get her.

The Winter Soldier followed the other HYDRA agents into the house. A man and woman were in there.

One of the HYDRA men raised a hand. The Winter Soldier shot both the man and woman.

She'd once known them. They'd been her neighbors. But that didn't matter. All that mattered was the mission.

A little red haired girl came downstairs. She froze at the sight of the men and woman standing over her parents bodies.

She ran.

The Winter Soldier was about to persue. However, one of her men held up a hand to halt her.

"Wait," he said. He wanted to let the girl get a head start.

After a few more moments, he said, "Go."

That was all it took.

The Winter Soldier ran out the back door and into the woods. It didn't take her long to catch up with the girl.

--

Later, 1949

The Winter Soldier stood at attention. She easily ignored the eyes on her. She existed to follow commands. Not to pay attention to people staring at her.

"You idiot!" one of the scientists yelled to another. "You just had to go and sleep with the bitch, didn't you?" As afore mentioned, the Winter Soldier followed orders. No matter what.

The man being yelled at rolled his eyes. "You say that like you don't constantly talk about how much you want to do the same," he said.

"I just talk about it!" the first man shouted. "It's not like I got her pregnant!"

Pregnant? the Winter Soldier thought vaguely. Was she with child?

"It was an accident!" the second man shouted.

"You're an accident!" the first man retorted before storming off.

The next year, the Winter Soldier had a daughter. The child's father named her Eleanor, Ella for short.

1955

Bucky Barnes' sister went missing in 1943. He dedicated his life after the war to finding her. But when he started investigating the stories of the Winter Soldier, HYDRA knew he needed to be eliminated.

So they sent the Winter Soldier and Hush after him.

Bucky stood on a cliff, the woman who'd once been his sister standing across from him.

"Dolley," he breathed.

The Winter Soldier blinked. Why did that name sound so familiar? Why did this man look so familiar? Did she know him? No, she couldn't have.

Then...

She looked into his eyes. Seeing herself in his pupils, she remembered.

She wasn't just a weapon. Not just a killer.

She was Dolley Barnes, little sister of Bucky and Rebecca.

She'd been on love with Steve Rogers her entire childhood.

She helped America, as a codebreaker.

HYDRA had kidnapped her.

But, then again.

She was the Winter Soldier.

She was a killing machine.

She was a weapon, a woman of mass destruction.

She had orders.

She ran towards her brother, pushing him off the cliff. Hush stood beside her, watching.

The Winter Soldier stood and watched her brother fall to his doom.

--

1962

The Winter Soldier's daughter was tired of being part of HYDRA. So one day, she ran off.

Her mother was sent to get her back.

As the woman ran through the woods, in search of her daughter.

Finally, she found her.

There Ella lay, her ankle stuck under a root. Her mother crouched beside her.

The Winter Soldier-- no, Dolley, saw the fear in the girl's eyes. She gently pried her ankle from the root.

Then she waited.

Ella clambered to her feet. She stared at her mother for a moment before bolting.

Dolley watched her go. Once Ella was out of sight, she bashed her own head into a tree. To make it look as if the girl had overpowered her.

Ella had been dosed with Super Soldier serum. It was plausible.

1980

"You are to help retrieve that girl. Catalina," a scientist told the Winter Soldier. She vaguely recognized him as the one who'd slept with her. "Should her mother fight, kill the woman. But we need the girl alive."

The Winter Soldier nodded. Get the girl alive. Kill the mother if she interferes. With that, she ran to the house.

Hannah Porter stood on the front porch, holding a gun. She pointed it at the Winter Soldier, ready to fire.

The soldier beat her to it.

She watched Hannah fall to the ground. Then she started into the house. However, the scientist from before grabbed her shoulder.

"Let Hush retrieve the girl," he said. He pulled her back a little. "You took care of my wife. She was the biggest threat to the mission."

--

Now

Dolley lay awake, jolted out of a nightmare. This happened every night. Every fucking night. She had escaped HYDRA. She'd gotten away from everyone who'd try to hurt her. But she would always be haunted by the memories.

Ellie stood in the doorway of Dolley's room. "I heard you scream," she said.

That was a common occurrence. It was what had gotten the pair kicked out of their last apartment, actually.

Dolley yawned, running a hand through her freshly re-dyed hair. "I'm okay," she said. "Just go back to sleep."

Ellie was silent for a moment before going back to her room.

That was Dolley's cue to flop back. She picked up a small notebook from her nightstand. It was the one Bucky had used to write down the leads he found while looking for her, Steve, Georgie, and Ellie. Dolley now used it to write down the names of people she needed to reconcile with.

Her thumb brushed over the first name. Written with a shaky hand, the ink smudged, a name she looked at every night.

B. Barnes.
