Full Moon
мαу тнємє - ƒυℓℓ мσση [ѕυρєямσση]
The biggest supermoon of 2021 reaches its peak on Wednesday, May 26th; the first of the two supermoons of the year. It will coincide with a 15 minutes lunar eclipse in some parts of North America.
The term 'supermoon' was coined by astrologer Richard Nolle in 1970, and it refers to a full moon that occurs when the moon is within 90% of perigee, its closest approach to Earth.
Mostly, a full moon isn't perfectly full. We only see the same side of the moon with part of it in shadow. The only time the moon is a 100% full is when Earth and the sun are perfectly aligned and the alignment produces a lunar eclipse.
And sometimes—once in a blue moon—the moon is full twice a month.
The May full moon will appear the night before and after it peaks. It has many nicknames by different cultures, one of such names being the flower moon.
The full moon dates back to the Native American tribes, it was how they kept track of seasons - by giving distinctive names to each recurring full moon. The May full moon is called the full flower moon because it sprouts one of the earliest widespread flowers of Spring; the herb moss pink.
The lunar eclipse occurs in the early hours of the morning of May 26th and will be visible to stargazers in western North America, western South America, eastern Asia, and Oceania.
When the full moon appears this month, it will be closer to Earth, making it the biggest and brightest full moon of the year. On average, supermoons are about 7% bigger and 15% brighter than a typical full moon. It will appear full for about 3 days, from Monday evening through Thursday Morning.
