SEATTLE GRACE HOSPITAL
EMERGENCY ROOM
seattle, washington
8am
"the dead baby bike race? they actually named it that?" teagan asked as george tied her trauma gown.
george nodded. "it's a stupid name but every year, the dead baby bar holds this underground bike race."
"do you ever wonder why someone would name a bar something so disgusting?" izzie asked.
"keep your panties on, nancy drew." cristina said with a chuckle.
"anyway, the race is completely illegal and-" george started to ramble.
"and it's crazy! a bunch of bike messengers racing against traffic, trying to beat each other for free shots of tequila." meredith chimed in.
"the things people will do for tequila." teagan said.
"come on, an all out, no holds barred competition sounds like fun!" alex said.
"the race doesn't even have any rules. except eye gouging. no eye gouging." george said making izzie chuckle.
"we're gonna be trapped in the pit band-aiding idiots when we could be up in the o.r." cristina complained.
"what kind of sickos engage in a race that has, its only rule, that you can't rip out the eyeballs of another human being?" george asked.
"men, georgie, men." alex answered.
"i need someone to get up to the o.r. floor, the chief needs a right hand." dr. bailey said causing a raid of hands to be raised. "o'malley, go."
"so the rest of us will be down here? doing what, sutures?" cristina said sounding annoyed.
dr. bailey scoffed, "all of you except for teagan."
teagan's eyes widened as she was singled out by dr. bailey. "why me?" she asked the resident, a bit confused.
"you were requested by dr. cooper. i don't know why so don't ask me why, just go find him on the pediatric floor. the rest of you, let's move." dr. bailey said as teagan took off her trauma gown.
PEDIATRIC FLOOR
seattle, washington
9am
the elevator doors opened and teagan walked out onto the pediatric floor. she looked around, her eyes scanning around for any sign of a familiar face.
she stopped a nurse who was walking down the hallway. "excuse me? can you point me in the direction of dr. cooper?" she asked the nurse.
the nurse pointed down the hallway, "he's in the very first door. in a patient's room." the nurse said.
"thank you." teagan responded before walking down to the door. she stopped in front of the first door before lightly knocking on it.
a moment later, the door opened to reveal dr. cooper. he gave her a once over before stepping to the side. "good, you're here." he said, letting her in the room.
she entered the room before he closed the door behind her. "yeah, it's me." she said, looking around the room and noticing the teenage boy on the bed.
"meet our patient, justin green." he said, his voice cold and calculating. "justin is seventeen and was skateboarding when he hit his abdomen. hard."
"big skateboarder, huh?" teagan asked the boy.
the boy looked up at her before nodding. "very big skateboarder. it's what i do." he said, wincing in pain a bit.
"i'd like you to get a ct scan or an ultrasound, i need to know what i'm dealing with and of course...i want to rule out internal injuries." dr. cooper said.
justin's eyes widened, "internal injuries?" he asked, looking nervous.
"i'm sure you're fine...but just a precaution and i want the scans to make sure you don't have a ruptured appendix, a ruptured liver or a punctured intestine." dr. cooper said.
"sounds...nice..." he murmured before wincing from the pain again.
teagan smiled at the boy before turning to dr. cooper. "consider it done."
"perfect." he said, a hint of a small smirk appearing on his lips before it was gone again. "thanks dr. pierce." he said before walking out.
"so, how long have you been skateboarding?" teagan asked the young boy as she scanned his chart.
justin looked up at her, the pain in his stomach was definitely visible on his face. "i started when i was nine. been doing it ever since then...but it's been my dream to go pro." he said with a weak smile.
"ever surfed?" she asked.
justin chuckled, "yeah. once. i sucked miserably at it. skateboard's are my thing." he said as teagan did a quick exam on his abdomen.
"where i'm from the two go hand and hand. no guy skates and doesn't surf." she informed him as she ordered for a ct scan.
"california?" he guessed.
teagan looked at him and smirked, "correct." she said, standing up.
"always wanted to go there." he said as teagan grabbed his chart. "too bad my parents aren't here right now, or else i'd get you to convince them to take me."
"and they're...where?" she inquired as a nurse came in and left teagan with a wheelchair to head to get the scan done.
he nodded before carefully getting out of bed. "both of them are at work and on top of that, it's a school day meaning my friends can't come until after three." he complained. justin said before sitting down and sighing. "plus it sucks being sick and having a hot girl around to see it."
teagan chuckled as she started to wheel the boy towards the ct scanner. "you're a charmer, i'll give ya that." she said.
"gotta make up for the hospital gown somehow." he joked.
"don't worry, you wear it well." she teased, amused by his attempts to flirt.
"i know you're lying, but as long as my girlfriend doesn't have to see it, we're okay." he said with a smile.
"alright, get comfortable. i'll be in that room in there checking out your scans." she told him.
justin hummed as he settled into the machine before teagan headed into the other room. she pressed some buttons on the computer and started the scan. she began looking through the scans as they came through, scanning through them closely.
suddenly, dr. cooper entered the room. "any sign of internal bleeding?" he asked as he stood next to her, his eyes watching the scan.
"no sir, but i do see what looks to be a benign cyst. right there on his abdomen." she pointed.
dr. cooper looked at the scan and nodded, "probably caused by the impact from the board." he observed. "the scan did turn out good."
"it did." she replied. "what are you thinking?" she asked.
"i'm thinking that because of the dead baby bike race all operating rooms are going to be booked until five." he stated. "meaning i can't get in there to preform a cyst removal." he complained.
"but it's such a minor surgery, surely they'll bump someone to do it. it'll be quick." teagan told him.
"the dead baby bike race takes priority. i've already tried." he said, sounding annoyed. "they said they won't bump someone."
teagan groaned, "ugh. that race...i still don't understand the appeal of it."
he started to speak before his pager went off. "look, can you hang out with him today? take him around the hospital with you, read him a book, do something. he seems to like you and well i've got to go." gavin said.
teagan widened her eyes, "take him around the hospital?" she asked, a bit surprised by the request.
"i'm serious, he likes you. find something to do with him." he said sternly as he started walking out. "i have to go to a consult."
"wait! is this babysitting duty?" she asked the man.
he gave her a look, "you can think of it as whatever you want. as long you keep him distracted and occupied." he said firmly.
"i'm an on call doctor, not a babysitter." she muttered, not quite thrilled with the new task.
"it's either that or you go down to the pit and do sutures." he said as he headed out of the room.
teagan smiled, "justin and i will be best friends."
teagan walked back into the room to see justin sitting up patiently, still awaiting his results.
"did i pass the test?" he asked when he saw her walking in. "am i gonna be a normal guy again or a sick guy?"
teagan chuckled, "you're gonna be fine. you look good, no internal bleeding or organ ruptures or anything like that. but, you do have a small non-malignant cyst on your abdomen that we need to remove. unfortunately we can't get you into an operation room until this evening."
justin's smiled wavered as he heard that last part. "so i'm trapped with a hospital gown until this evening?" he said, sighing.
teagan nodded, "pretty much. but, we've got a whole hospital to explore and a lot of time on our hands...wanna go sight seeing?" she asked.
justin thought it over before sighing. "well...it's better than just sitting here in my gown all day." he agreed.
teagan smiled, "great. let's get you back in that wheelchair, my friend."
LOBBY
seattle, washington
12pm
"george o'malley!" teagan called out as she noticed the intern sitting behind a desk. "meet justin green, justin meet my friend george." she said. "george...what exactly are you doing?"
"well, there's this v.i.p. patient. he likes me. so i'm hiding." george said.
"i don't understand, that's a good thing that he likes you." teagan said with a shrug.
"no, teagan! he likes me likes me." george said.
"so what? go for it." teagan replied.
george looked up slowly with a horrified look on his face, "teagan, you thought i was gay?"
"well, if the tail fits." she shrugged.
"the saying is 'if the shoe fits,'" justin informed his doctor.
"yeah, that." teagan said before noticing alex karev
heading their way, a chart in hand. she couldn't help but internally sigh.
he eyed her, justin, and george as they stood there. "what's going on?" he asked casually.
"we're going." teagan said referring to her and justin as she tried to wheel justin away.
alex smirked as he stopped her by blocking the wheelchair. "where are you going in such a rush?" he asked as teagan tried to push around him.
justin looked up at alex and looked back at teagan as she tried to move away from him. he could sense the awkward tension between them.
"excuse us." she said, looking down.
justin stayed quiet as he watched the two talk as alex continued to block the wheelchair.
"hey, are you trying to run away from me?" he teased as she gave him a look.
"we've got places to be." she replied bluntly, trying to avoid his gaze.
"teagan, look." alex said in a more hushed tone. "we hooked up, yes. but we can...talk about it i guess. i don't want things to be weird or whatever."
justin widened his eyes as he tried to listen into their conversation, watching teagan avoid eye contact with alex.
"yeah...i don't want things to be weird either. so let's not make a big deal out of it." she suggested.
"so you don't regret anything?" alex asked.
teagan's eyes widened in surprised by his question. "i don't regret it at all. it was a good time. that's all." she said honestly.
"it was a good time? or i was a good time?" alex asked with a smirk.
teagan scoffed, "there is a seventeen year old boy in my wheelchair and you have the nerve to ask me that!"
"he's seventeen, basically a man." alex said. "now was i good?"
justin chuckled at their conversation as he sat in the wheelchair. he honestly could get used to having a front row seat to watching teagan's interactions like this.
"yes. you were good. okay, happy now?" she asked alex, rolling her eyes.
"i'm freaking ecstatic, pierce." alex replied. "would you like to do it again sometime?"
justin was honestly enjoying this as he eavesdropped on their flirting. it was much better entertainment than some hospital t.v. show.
"don't tease me, karev." she said, giving him a look.
"i'm not. i want a yes or a no." he teased.
"no. well maybe. well no." she shook her head before rushing off with her patient.
"wait, no! take me back to that guy. i need to take some notes." justin said.
teagan chuckled as she left alex standing at the desk, his smirk still on his lips. as she pushed the wheelchair with justin still in it, she glanced down at him. "are you enjoying my love life, justin?" she asked him, amused by his reaction to her little exchange.
justin looked up at her, "if i said yes would you be offended?" he asked.
teagan shook her head with a smile on her lips as she continued to push him, "not at all. i'd be more offended if you said no."
"why's that?" justin asked.
"because i need someone to gossip to right now and you can't get away so it's gonna have to be you." teagan joked.
OPERATING THEATER
seattle, washington
4:30pm
"are you lost?" justin asked as teagan wheeled him around.
"no, i'm not. i just haven't seen or heard anything." teagan said. "so, we're going to the operating theater where we can watch a real life surgery." she told the boy.
justin perked up a bit, "that's freaking cool!" he said, excited to see some kind of action at the hospital.
"it's pretty neat if i do say so myself. you get to watch up close how we make real life magic happen. surgery magic." teagan explained to him as they walked into the operating theater. "there everyone is!" she exclaimed as she saw george, izzie, cristina, and meredith seated.
"who's your friend?" meredith asked as she looked at the teenager.
"my new best friend. his name's justin. justin, meet my friends meredith, izzie, cristina, and you've met george." teagan introduced, making sure he knew all their names.
justin waved to everyone, "hey."
izzie smiled at justin, "how old are you?" she asked him, examining him closely.
"seventeen." justin said as he glanced at teagan. "so uh, what's going on down there?"
"a harvest surgery." izzie answered.
justin raised an eyebrow, "what's that? harvesting for food?" he asked, still baffled at the term.
"no. organ harvesting. a donor surgery." meredith explained as she looked over to the operating table.
george smiled, "we're gonna get my patient a liver." he announced.
"i hate that guy." cristina said as she looked down at alex in the operating room.
"alex is vermin. that surgery is ours." meredith said.
"you know, teagan slept with that guy." george told the other interns.
teagan immediately slapped his arm, "hello! seventeen year old boy right here, not to mention that is my business." she argued.
"you slept with evil spawn?" cristina asked.
"we were both bored and within fifty feet of each other," teagan replied.
meredith smirked, "yeah, we keep an eye on teagan and alex to make sure they stay at least fifty feet apart at all times."
"you do not!" teagan protested.
"dr. pierce. a word?" a monotone voice said. teagan looked up to see dr. cooper heading outside of the operating theater.
"right behind you." she said before hitting george's arm again. "damn you and your loud mouth. now i'm in trouble."
"i'm sorry!" he whispered as she followed the head doctor, "but your sex life is interesting."
justin smirked at their conversation as he looked down at the operation. "this is pretty cool." he said.
izzie chuckled, "wait 'till the organ comes out."
"dr. cooper, you asked for me." teagan said to the taller man as they stood in the hallway.
dr. cooper looked behind him before turning towards her, "yes. yes i did."
she looked up at him, "am i in trouble for something?"
"you could say that." he simply said with a deadpan expression on his face.
"is it for bringing justin up here to watch a surgery? i knew it could have some problems, but he was so bored!" she guessed. "or is it because of george's inappropriate topics of conversation."
he let out a sigh, "you need to be mindful of what you're talking about and when you're talking about it."
"i'm sorry for what george was saying. he just doesn't seem to know when to shut his mouth and just think for a second." teagan apologized. "it won't happen, trust me."
dr. cooper continued to look at her, "see that it doesn't. you're a good doctor, and a good intern. i've taken a liking to you and i believe some of the other attendings have as well. you have the ability to do great here, but you also have that ability to make yourself look really bad. especially with karev."
teagan rolled her eyes at the mention of alex, "i am completely capable of being professional with karev. we've already moved passed what we did. it was a one time thing."
gavin looked visibly calmed by that news. "good. you can take justin down to get prepped for the o.r." he paused. "his surgery will be taking place in o.r. two in about twenty minutes."
"right, yes, yes." she nodded in acknowledgment before watching him walk away. she turned on her heel and made her way back into the operating theater.
"see that. that's the liver going to my patient." george said as dr. burke removed the liver.
"that's amazing." justin said as he observed.
"i'm sorry to cut this all short, but justin your cyst has got to come out." teagan told the boy who got a sad expression on his face. "this'll be good! all it means is that you'll be one step closer to getting out of that unflattering gown."
justin chuckled as he looked at his blue gown, "i really can't wait to get out of it. i'm starting to think I'm losing a piece of my dignity each moment i'm wearing it."
OPERATING ROOM
seattle, washington
5pm
teagan stood next to justin as he lay on the operating bed, now asleep as the anaesthetic had taken effect.
dr. cooper then walked in, "dr. pierce, have you ever seen a laparoscopic procedure?" he asked.
teagan shook her head, "not up close in person, sir."
dr. cooper nodded. "pay attention then." he commanded as he started to make the first incision.
teagan watched closely as the doctor made the incision and then used the long, slim instrument to move around the abdomen to find the small cyst. justin was still blissfully unconscious as she observed the whole procedure.
"and there it is." dr. cooper said with a small smile. he moved the instrument and grabbed the cyst. he pulled it out, holding it delicately in his fingers.
"who knew skateboarding could cause this?" she said with a chuckle.
"not justin, that's for sure." dr. cooper replied before placing the cyst down to dispose of it.
"i never thought i'd see this up close." teagan said, in awe.
dr. cooper looked down at justin, "the procedure is finished. he should be waking up soon. it's a minor procedure so he'll be discharged tomorrow morning."
"i know he'll be happy to hear that." teagan responded. "he's a good kid, a funny one."
dr cooper raised an eyebrow as he closed up justin, "yeah, i know him. you got to know him while you were on babysitting duty then?"
teagan smiled as she looked down at justin who still remained blissfully asleep, "yes, i did. he's an easy patient. didn't complain once about having to be stuck with me all day on his surgery day."
"hang out with him a little longer. i'd like you to see to it that he wakes up without any problems." he said.
teagan looked at the doctor's request in confusion, "what am i supposed to do? sing him back to life?"
dr. cooper smiled, "just make small conversation. he just had his first surgery. he's probably gonna want to be with someone as he starts waking up."
PEDIATRIC FLOOR
seattle, washington
7:30pm
teagan sat in a chair, flipping a magazine near the corner of the room while justin woke up.
justin slowly opened his eyes before his vision adjusted. he looked around the room before his eyes settled on teagan. he smiled at the sight of her sitting in a chair, "you're still here?"
teagan opened her mouth to speak before a rush of teenagers walked in. "justin, hey!" they all yelled.
justin smiled as he saw his friends. "oh man, i'm so glad to see you guys." he said, still a little drowsy from the anaesthetic.
"are you okay?" one of his friends asked as they moved closer.
"yeah, i'm fine. just a little groggy." justin responded.
"your friend here just got out of surgery, he's a little out of it but he'll be back to normal soon." she told the kids. "in the meantime, try and keep the volume down a bit."
his friends all hushed up as they nodded. "right, right." a boy said.
"you scared us, man." another said. "we thought you were gonna be gone forever."
"psh, come on! it was just a little cyst." justin replied, still a little out of it.
"excuse me, have you seen my dad?" a girl asked teagan.
teagan shook her head, "am i supposed to have seen your dad?"
"my dad's the head of pediatric surgery. his name's dr. gavin cooper." she explained.
teagan raised an eyebrow, "oh you're dr. cooper's daughter? he has a daughter?"
the girl nodded with a smile on her face. "yep. his only kid."
"you're lucky. you have a doctor as a dad!" one of justin's friends exclaimed.
the girl shrugged, "meh, it's both good and bad. all my friends are a bit jealous because he's great but i can't get away with much."
"no pretending you don't feel well to get away with school, huh?" teagan guessed.
the girl shook her head. "oh no. one sniffle and he immediately knows i'm faking."
"i'll go get him now." teagan said before walking out of the patients room, seeing gavin at the nurses station. "dr. cooper! hey, justin woke up and your daughter is here."
"sophie's here?" gavin asked. "well, that makes sense. she's dating justin." he said with a shrug.
teagan's eyes widened in surprise and she stared at him, "wait your kid is dating justin? the kid with the skateboard accident?"
dr. cooper nodded, "for a couple months now. she's always hanging out with him and his friends. hence her being here for him now."
teagan tried not to look shocked as she stared at him with a dumbfounded expression, "i had no idea."
dr. cooper let out a soft chuckle, "well now you know. let me go give her and justin some fatherly talk. you've done more than enough today, pierce. good work." he told her. "you should be off for the day now."
teagan nodded as she looked at him. "okay. i guess i should get some rest too." she said, rubbing her eyes in exhaustion.
"go home and rest. you've earned it." gavin reminded her.
"thanks. thanks, sir." she said with a nod before turning on her heel.
