SEATTLE GRACE HOSPITAL
THE LOCKER ROOM
seattle, washington
8am
teagan was just finishing up changing into her scrubs, her top undone and bra visible when she noticed someone's gaze on her. she looked up and spotted the tan intern staring shamelessly.
she quickly covered herself up with her scrub top before saying, "take a picture, it'll last longer." she said sarcastically.
the intern, alex karev, looked unbothered by her sassy comment. "no thanks. i'm still upset about that stunt you pulled with my patient yesterday." he responded dryly.
she raised an eyebrow, "you should be upset with yourself. letting that poor boy walk away with a misdiagnosis of pneumonia. your misdiagnosis."
alex, unphased by her words, just looked her up and down. "oh please, i can't be expected to know everything." he responded sarcastically.
"well you can be expected to know how to read a damn chart." she shot back.
alex smirked at her before responding. "listen, i thought it was pneumonia. that kid didn't fit the criteria for PE. he had a minor cough, a low grade fever and a headache." he said as if what he was saying was an absolutely excuse.
"oh, i didn't realize a fever of 103 was the new low!" teagan retorted, being extremely sarcastic.
alex, stepped up to her and looked down at her. "yeah, well forgive me for being a little distracted with other things." he said as his eyes glanced down at her chest before bringing them back up to her face.
teagan immediately scoffed, "yeah i doubt an ego like yours is ever distracted." she retorted, her eyes flickering for a moment but not being missed by alex.
before alex could say anything back, bailey walked into the locker room and cleared her throat. "george you're running the code team, meredith take the trauma pager, teagan deliver the weekend labs to the patients, cristina work on pre-op patient, and izzie you're on sutures." she said to the interns.
"dr. bailey, i was hoping to assist you in the o.r. today. maybe do a minor procedure. i think that i'm ready." meredith said as she held out a mocha latte. "mocha latte?"
"if she gets to cut, i want to cut too!" cristina exclaimed.
"yeah me too!" izzie added.
"i also would like to cut." teagan said with a nod.
george chimed in, "i wouldn't mind cutting today."
"stop talking." bailey shushed. "every intern wants to perform their first surgery. that's not your job. do you know what your job is? to make your resident happy. and do i look happy? no. why? because my interns are whiny! but do you know what will make me look happy? having a code team staffed, having the trauma pages answered, having the weekend labs delivered, having pre-op patients prepared, and having someone down in the pit, doing the sutures." she ranted before grabbing the mocha latte. "no one holds a scalpel until i'm so happy, i'm mary freaking poppins!"
the interns grumbled amongst themselves with disappointed looks on their faces before getting back to work.
teagan rolled her eyes as she heard bailey make her way out of the room. "mary poppins my ass." she mumbled to herself before leaving to get the weekend charts.
NURSES STATION
seattle, washington
12pm
while organizing the many labs on the center of the nurses station's desk, george went on and on in teagan's ear. "do you know what the code team does? saves lives. i shock a heart, and someone lives to see another day. that's upbeat! it's a glass half full-" he went on before she interrupted him.
"george, i love you, i do. but if you don't stop talking about yourself for two minutes i will scream." she threatened as she continued to focus on the charts in front of her.
"i don't like you." the boy muttered as he began to toy around with his pager.
"i don't like you either." she shot back to him before sighing, "these are gonna take me all day to get through."
"then get started." a voice said from behind her, bailey.
teagan jumped at the sudden voice behind her, whipping her around to face an unamused bailey. "yes ma'am, i wasn't complaining-" she tried to explain herself but bailey didn't seem to care.
"intern was reassigned, he's mine now. i'm having him shadow you for the day, you show him how i do things." she informed teagan before walking away leaving a frustrated teagan and a smug alex.
teagan groaned, knowing the last thing she wanted was to deal with alex. she turned to look at him, seeing a cocky smirk on his face. he was definitely enjoying this.
"if it isn't my best friend in the whole wide world." she said sarcastically.
alex smirked back at her as he leaned against a desk, watching her. "well, when you say it like that... it just warms my heart." alex retorted with sarcasm.
she began to walk down the hall to the first room where they'd explain a patients lab work to the patient. "just sit back while i do the talking. don't need you screwing this up too." she told him.
he just scoffed and followed after her, shoving his hands in his white coat pockets. "i'm offended, you think i can't do good bedside manner?" he teased her.
"no, i don't." she shot back before opening the door. "is there a ronald livingston in here?"
a man, probably late 40s, sitting up in the bed looked up and nodded, "yeah that's me."
teagan gave him a smile before heading over. "i'm teagan, and i'm an intern here." she said. alex stood behind her like an awkward shadow. "so according to your labs you have a disorder called multinucleate cell angiohistiocytoma. it's not a cancer sarcoma, in fact it's very rare but minor!" she informed him. "you'll be discharged today, okay?"
"i don't need a surgery?" the man confirmed.
"no need for a surgery, no." she replied.
he smiled, "i'm not gonna die? you mean to tell me that i'm fine?"
teagan chuckled and nodded, "you'll make it through this one. no need to worry." she reassured him.
the mans wife, who had been sitting by his bedside, stood up in tears before walking up to teagan and throwing herself around her. "thank you so much!" she said as she began to cry. she pulled back and planted a kiss on teagan's cheek, causing alex to smirk at the sight of it.
teagan awkwardly patted the woman on the back, taken by surprise by this reaction. while she didn't mind it, it felt a little strange.
once the woman finally let her go, she looked over and saw alex with an amused look on his face. "what?" she asked him.
"just, so sweet. the whole ordeal." he said sarcastically.
"like candy." she spat.
he chuckled as he began to follow her back into the hall, "it was like a scene straight out of a movie. just minus the fireworks and the soundtrack." he joked.
teagan just rolled her eyes and took a seat on the empty gurney. "oh shut up. and this is already taking forever."
alex took a seat next to her, "don't people get sick anymore?" he said referring to how the job was to send people away.
"how are we supposed to get any o.r. time if everyone's gonna just live happily ever after?" teagan said as she sat criss cross apple sauce.
alex chuckled again at her comment as he leaned back against the gurney, making himself comfortable. he looked over at her for a moment, seeing her all wrapped up in her little gurney position. "your bedside manner is good." he spoke after a few beats of silence.
teagan looked at him, a little wary. "yeah?" she asked him as if he would start joking.
alex nodded as he looked at her. "well, you managed to comfort a man, reassure his wife, and break the news to them very sweetly." he said. "for a minute i forgot you were capable of being pleasant." he teased.
she said jokingly before playfully smacking his shoulder. "i'm perfectly capable of being nice, you're just really annoying." she smirked before handing him ten files. "you do ten, i'll do ten. it'll speed this up."
"no hugging." alex ruled.
she rolled her eyes at his comment as she shuffled through the charts. "i think i just wanted to avoid having an emotional person throwing their body weight at me."
"really? you seem like one to enjoy hugs." he said, raising an eyebrow.
she gave him a look. "yeah, i can be clingy. but there's a difference. i don't exactly enjoy a random crying woman embracing me in an uncomfortable hug." she said matter-of-factly.
"oh, i bet you'd prefer a man embracing you, huh?" he teased again.
"i'll see you when your ten patients are up." she told the intern before walking away.
LOBBY
seattle, washington
3:45pm
"hey you two!" teagan said to meredith and cristina who were seated in the lobby. "what are you guys doing?"
"oh, just hanging with my penis." meredith said as she held up the cooler.
"oh right, from the rape case." teagan said as she took a peek in the cooler. "ouch!" she said before closing it.
"i kissed derek." meredith blurted.
"you kissed derek." cristina repeated.
"in the elevator." meredith added.
teagan raised her eyebrows, "you kissed mcdreamy in the elevator?"
"i was having a bad day." meredith excused her actions.
"i'm having a bad day, maybe i should makeout with someone." teagan said as she pondered who.
"how about that pediatric surgeon you were working with yesterday? dr. cooper?" meredith suggested.
"he's so stoic, it's weirdly hot." teagan said.
"mccold." cristina said before shaking her head. "i don't like that. how about, mcstone."
teagan nodded in confirmation, "mcstone with a stone cold look on his face."
meredith laughed, "mcdreamy and mcstone."
then teagan's pager went off, "shoot, alex is paging me 9-1-1...i've gotta go." she said before running off.
GURNEY SPOT
seattle, washington
4:15pm
she ran all the way down the empty hallway where she saw alex laying on a gurney with a bag of lays chips. "you paged me 9-1-1 so i can see you looking lonely?" she asked the intern.
"i don't look lonely, i am lonely. big difference." alex quipped before putting another chip in his mouth. "and my head hurts."
teagan rolled her eyes before taking a seat on the edge of the gurney, looking at him. "maybe it's a tumor." she guessed.
"you wish i had a tumor." he teased.
"you're right, i wish you had a tumor. that way we'd both be in the o.r. for a surgery!" she told the man who only chuckled. "can i have a chip?"
he sighed dramatically before holding out the open bag to her. "you drive a hard bargain. take it." he muttered, watching as she reached in and grabbed a chip.
"you're not just lonely, you're bored." teagan observed as she shoved the chip into her mouth.
"entertain me." he replied.
she raised an eyebrow at him, "entertain you? i'm not a clown."
he rolled his eyes at her snarky remark, "i never said you were. but i'm bored, and you're here now so, entertain me." he said as he shoved another chip in his mouth.
"you're so demanding." she mumbled as she leaned her head against the bed frame and looked up at the ceiling.
he chuckled as he continued to eat his chips. "you're so feisty." he retorted back.
she looked back at him from leaning her head back. "guess it balances out. you're demanding, i'm feisty."
"a dangerous combo." alex replied, looking at her.
teagan met his gaze and their eyes locked, looking at each other intently for a few beats.
"it sure is." she spoke quietly, keeping her eyes on his.
they stared at each other for a few more beats, teagan watching alex's eyes as they flicked down to her lips. suddenly, the tension got to be too much.
without thinking, their mouths collided in a hungry kiss as she leaned forward to kiss him. he sat up, gripping the waist of her scrubs, kissing her back just as hungry. it was messy and uncoordinated, yet both of them couldn't get enough.
she pushed him back down onto the gurney, causing a few chips to go flying off of his lap. she climbed up and straddled his lap, her lips still on his, trying to get as close as possible to him.
he groaned as he felt her weight on him, his hands roaming up her waist to her back, bunching up the fabric of her scrub top.
"you know, on the code team i don't feel like i'm helping-" george interrupted causing teagan to jump off of alex's lap. "oh my god..." he muttered.
teagan shot a glare at george, trying to compose herself before she spoke up. "maybe you could forget you saw that."she asked of george as she tried to fix her hair and smooth down her top.
alex just looked up at the other intern, completely unbothered as he grabbed the bag of chips that had fallen onto the floor and popped a new chip in his mouth.
"for the record, i'm never gonna forget that i just saw you on top of each other." george said, pointing at them both.
"why are you even here? i thought you were on code duty." alex asked the intern, unphased by what he just witnessed.
george shrugged before looking at teagan, "i wanted a break."
"ive been suturing all day. my hands are numb." said izzie, completely oblivious to everything as she walked in and took a seat on the gurney.
"at least you're helping people." george said, though he was unable to pull his eyes away from teagan and alex who were seated next to each other.
"at least you get to practice freaking medicine." alex quipped.
"i had to send my chinese lady away." izzie said referring to her patient who spoke no english.
cristina who walked in, rolled her eyes. "oh poor izzie, sending away patients. boo-hoo!"
"so the police say they can't send the crime scene guy down for hours. so i have to spend the night with the penis." meredith said as she sat on the gurney whilst holding her cooler. "alex, don't make any jokes."
he shook his head, "it was too easy."
george who flopped on the gurney next announced, "who here feels like they have no idea what they're doing?"
they all agreed collectively, all groaning.
"i mean, are we supposed to be learning something? because i don't feel like i'm learning anything." george said.
teagan chimed in, "i feel like i'm back in kindergarten, finger painting and taking naps."
"minus the taking naps part." izzie said.
"and the having fun part." alex added.
"surgery is fun!" cristina chimed in.
teagan nodded, "obviously surgery is fun when you actually make it through the o.r. doors."
"i hate being an intern." alex admitted.
"it's like there's a wall. the attendings and residents are over there being surgeons while we're over here being..." cristina started to say.
"suturing, code running, lab delivering, post-up prepping penis minders." meredith finished off as dr. bailey walked in. as soon as she shot the interns a glare, they all got up and made their run for it.
PATIENT ROOM
seattle, washington
6pm
"so, you'll be able to go home today." teagan informed her and alex's last patient of the day.
the woman's husband then got up and walked over to teagan, "thank you so much. so so much." he said, holding his arms out for a hug.
teagan, a bit taken by surprise, glanced over at alex who was standing nearby to see a devilish smirk on his face. she didn't want a random man hugging her, so she pushed alex into the path of the man.
alex stumbled forward as the man wrapped his arms around him, holding him in a tight hug. teagan then bit her lip, holding back a laugh as she watched alex getting hugged by the man.
he shot her a very annoyed look, silently telling her to 'get me out of this.'
she chuckled as the man finally pulled away and alex stumbled back to her side. "good one." he grumbled under his breath to her.
"safe travels back home, folks." she told the couple.
"thank you again!" the man said as the two interns left the room.
"nice one..." alex repeated once he was out of earshot. "pushing me into the hug."
"well, i didn't want a random man hugging me." teagan explained with an innocent shrug.
"but you didn't mind setting me up for it?" he said, giving her a look.
"you'll get over it..." she teased as she patted his back.
alex then paused, "i wish that o'malley didn't stop what we were doing downstairs."
"at least he'll forever be scarred by the memory of seeing us almost going at it." she said.
alex chuckled, "yeah, there's that at least."
"but we do have a whole night..." teagan trailed, biting her lip.
his eyes dilated. "that we do." he smirked as he got what she was hinting at.
"we could always....pick up where we left off?" she asked.
"i'm all for it if you are." alex said before looking over at the clock. "meet me in the on-call room right up the hall in ten."
she smirked, "i'll see you in ten."
LOCKER ROOM
seattle, washington
8am
"i need a drink, a man, or a massage." cristina complained.
"why not a drunken massage by a man?" teagan inquired as she slipped off her shirt, revealing her bra.
"good thinking." she said before noticing something on teagan's neck. "is that a hickey?" she asked.
teagan smirked before turning towards george, "what's wrong with you?" she asked the boy.
"i lost five patients on the code team today." he admitted. "i feel like the angel of death."
"george, 95% of all code patients can't be revived." cristina told him.
"that is true, and most of them are seriously dead before you even get there." teagan chimed in as she placed her regular shirt on.
"what?" george exclaimed. "why didn't you guys tell me that when i was going on and on about how great it was gonna be?"
"because i'm cristina and you're george." cristina said before walking out.
george shook his head and turned to teagan, "what's your excuse?"
teagan shrugged, "i just like to watch you suffer." she teased.
george's face fell, "hey!"
"but seriously, it's not your fault. if these people are going to die, they're going to die. no amount of cpr will bring them back." teagan explained, patting george on the back.
housekeeping notes !
alex and teagan...do we love? do we hate?
i would like to explain that the time frame's aren't always super clear- yes they're supposed to be working 48 hour shifts but that might not always be clear with the time frames that i provide.
