Broken Pride

The sun awoke like a baby and began to paint the sky in a rich blue hue. The milky white clouds began to glide across the sky, stopping at every location.

Winds blew around, bringing with them decaying leaves and even plastic bags. As enormous, buzzing bumblebees swarmed up in the air, hunting for tasty honey, the fresh, chilly, and crisp breeze began to whistle like an invisible ghost.

The neighboring trees were brimming with vibrant green leaves, which were busy speaking to one another about their morning intentions. The apples gleamed brighter in the sunlight, and the tomatoes peered out from the shade, delicate as a baby's cheek.

Everything is still brilliant and energetic in the autumn environment, exactly like it is in the spring. The cold didn't disturb them; they'd keep growing until they were ready to leave.

However, it appeared that this had no influence on Kang Hyeri's customary cheerful demeanor. With a perceptible pout, she gazed through the windows, her shoulders down, almost as if she had just hauled the heaviest item she had ever carried.

"Wow, if it isn't a boring day," Hyeri sighed as she slouched down the couch, expressionless.

"You're just upset that Jinsoul is not here to cuddle with you because they're filming," said Hyunjin, giving the younger girl a mocking look before sitting down the floor.

"I'm not saying you're wrong," the panda said as she flipped through the channels on the television. Yeojin, who had been contentedly watching television before, was irritated by Hyeri's interruption.

The bean took a pillow and screamed at it, venting all her anger out, "Can someone please entertain Hyeri? I might throw hands if she keep this up." Yeojin received nothing but a chuckle from the mentioned girl, almost as if mocking her.

The leader then came from the kitchen, giving Yeojin a puzzled look, "You can't possibly throw your hands, that's brutal of you to do to yourself," Haseul shook her head.

With this response, Yeojin tilted her head in confusion as she gave the leader a puzzled look as well, "What?"

"What do you mean what?"

Then the twins then proceeded to confuse each other incessantly. Each of them closed and opened their mouths, but their words remained caught in their throats, preventing them from expressing what they really wanted to say.

"Oh forget it, I might explode if I keep talking," Yeojin dropped her body down the couch, looking like a melted ice cream as she felt defeated.

Hyeri, on the other hand, decided to add fuel to the fire inside the near calm Yeojin by just saying; "Aww, my baby is emotionally growing up. I'm so proud of you." With a teasing motherly smile, the panda gently touched the youngest's bob cut hair.

This was enough for Yeojin to jerk her head in the direction of Hyeri, signaling her to flee while she still have the chance. Her fists were balled up into a fist, and her knuckles were white from the tightness.

Nearly everyone can see smoke flowing from Yeojin's nostrils and ears, like boiling water in a kettle, signaling the humans to put it out or everything will catch fire.

Yeojin enquired, her breath thick and sharp, "Are you making fun of my height again? If that's the case, you'd better lock your bedroom door or I'll kill you while you sleep tonight." Her tone suggests that she is barely able to keep her rage from exploding and breaking Hyeri's bones.

As she nestled close to Yeojin, the panda unintentionally pouted, her joyous grin fading from her face. "Your height is probably the only thing keeping you as LOONA's baby right now; you're maturing, and I'm not sure I'm ready for that."

She admitted, expressing her anguish at the prospect of seeing the youngest grow up. She didn't mean she didn't want Yeojin to grow up to be the fine lady she is, but she was just overwhelmed.

On the other hand, she was ecstatic to watch the said girl grow up right before her eyes. They have met years ago and they grew up along with the older girls, so she knew she'd miss the days when Yeojin looked and acted like the baby she was.

"Yeah because if you're taller than Hyeri, she'll look and seem like the baby instead of you." Breaking the solemn tone with a chuckle, Yerim teased in retaliation for the bean.

As they both chuckled, the ball of sunshine bumped her fist against Yeojin's as a manner of thanking each other for firing back at the panda.

Hyeri sat up, her pout getting worse since Yerim arrived. "I have my pride of being an older sister, don't hurt it," the younger Hye informed, her arms crossed.

"But being the youngest is cool, too—"

"No, it doesn't!" She yelled in disagreement, "I'm the youngest in my family; I don't want to be the youngest in my second family, either," she defended.

Hyeri frowned a little too much for everyone's likings. Despite the fact that some thought it was cute, they couldn't help but smile at the grumpy girl.

Not to mention, what she had just stated had an emotional impact on the girls. Nothing seems more important to Hyeri than hearing her say that they are her family.

"It's fun being the older, you won't have to use honorifics on someone younger than you. It's tiring," she reasoned in which some can't help but agree.

She would have done it years ago if she could. Hyeri became accustomed to using honorifics as a result of her deep respect for the elders, she couldn't help herself!

"It's 2021," Yeojin shrugged, "Nobody in this household uses honorifics." No one knew if she was being reassuring or simply providing information.

Hyeri growled, her voice dripping with dissatisfaction, "I think I'm the only one here that needs to address the older girls with honorifics! You don't even call me eonni anymore."

In less than a minute, she had reverted the crumpled face to the frowning one as quickly as possible. Everyone was perplexed by the way her emotions changed in a matter of seconds, despite the fact that they understood she was simply concentrating on what they were discussing at the time.

Hyeri was unable to regulate her emotions while remaining inside her bounds. She knows when to stop lashing out that might result to unintended consequences.

"That's because everyone enjoys being addressed as eonni. You know how weird they are." The frog sighed and rolled her eyes. She could see the girls glaring at her from the side of her eyes.

Then another teasing smile appeared on Hyeri's face, almost creepily, as if another crazy thought had entered her mind.

"So, how about you? Do you want to be referred to as Yeojin eonni?" That's right, another round of squabbling is about to commence.

The youngest grimaced in mere disgust, scooting away from the older female with a shiver going down her spine. "Ew, that gives me goosebumps."

"Yeojin eonni!" exclaims the older. Hyeri persisted, prompting Yeojin to rise from her seat only to be tackled down again, preventing her from fleeing.

"Stop it!"

"You're my eonni now!"

"Help me!"

"I'll stop once you call me eonni again," the older negotiated, hugging her and hiding her face behind Yeojin's back. "You're the only person in this household capable of doing that!"

Yeojin, on the other hand, shook her head furiously. As much as possible, expressing how much she doesn't want to.

"No! I'm an adult, and I'm going to act like one!" Her lips pull down into a pout, and crosses her arms like Hyeri did before.

"That doesn't change anything, even your age. You're still younger than me and that means you must use honorifics because I said so!" The two youngest then began an intense eye contact challenge, with no one intending to intervene.

Just then Yeojin spoke before her eyes could blink, a trick she does when she's about to lose this game, "Will you date me if I call you eonni again?"

Gowon nudged Hyejoo by the elbow and whispered, "You need to get that kind of confidence, Oli." Despite giving the older but shorter girl an eye roll, she nodded and jotted down notes in her head.

The panda snorted as she look at the girl dead in the eyes, "I have a girlfriend," she deadpanned.

Placing an arm around Hyeri, Yeojin reassured, "Your girlfriend's not even here, you won't have to worry." Shrugging her shoulders as if it was nothing.

This made Hyeri taken aback as she found herself lost of words, "What- Where are you learning this, Im Yeojin?" Hyeri became curious as to where and who had taught her eternal infant such things.

"Somewhere," Yeojin explained as she realized she had been caught red-handed. "You mean Hyunjin," Gowon snorted, facepalming.

The frog lets out a dramatic gasp, her hand covering her open mouth and her eyes wide open in surprise, before returning to her usual demeanor.

"'How to Get a Girlfriend' 101 with Kim Hyunjin!" The girls were caught off surprise when Hyunjin exclaimed. Yeojin flinches owing to the abrupt outrage as Hyeri caressed her back in a calming manner.

"That's silly, Kim Hyunjin," Hyeri shook her head, caressing the youngest's back till she calmed down her tensed heart.

Once she's sure Yeojin can finally catch her breathe, she crosses her arms at Hyunjin as if waiting for the girl's reasonable and acceptable explanation.

"Now that she's grown up, she needs to figure out how to get one for herself."

"I-"

"DATE ME OR LOSE YOUR PRIDE. CHOOSE WISELY, MISS KANG," the shortest pointed her finger towards the older girl as if threatening her.

"Uhm, should I be that demanding, too?" asked Hyejoo silently to Gowon who seemed to be speechless for a bit but then facepalms for the hundredth time.

There was a minute of silence, the others were noticeably waiting for Hyeri's response to the short girl's offer. It was as if it was their chance to hear all their unanswered questions from Hyeri.

"I rather lose my pride."

Everyone deep down knew she was just messing around, a way to annoy the bean even more. They know Hyeri would gladly go out and have a good time with Yeojin, and she wouldn't give it up for anything.

Hyunjin was well aware of the younger Hye's motives. Not wanting to ruin it, she devised a strategy and resolved to act like the girl in order to keep Yeojin from thinking about it too much.

"Ohoh, Im Yeojin just got rejected. Don't worry lentil bean, there are a lot more things you need to learn from O' Great Meowjin."

Hyunjin declared cheerfully, touching her head as though adoring herself. Yeojin, on the other hand, furrowed her brows again. As she stood up, her fists formed once more, ready to chase down the cat who was already running away.

"Lentil bean?! How dare you call me that- Come back here, you coccydynia!"

Then the two chased each other around, tagging Vivi along with them when Hyunjin hid behind the oldest in which Yeojin didn't hesitated to tickle her to get Hyunjin out of her protection.

The other girls couldn't help but laugh at Hyunjin's screams for assistance as Gowon took her phone to record everything.

Meanwhile, Hyejoo's gaze remains fixed on Hyeri, who appeared to be laughing at the two.

"Does that mean I have a chance, Kang Riley?" Hyejoo then suddenly blurted out, immediately catching the younger Hye's attention.

Knowing what she was talking about, Hyeri gave the older a chuckle. "Keep dreaming, Miss Son. You might earn it," she told before marching her way towards their bedroom.

Looking at Hyeri's distant figure, the side of her lips curve up in a slight smile.

Hyejoo is well aware that her remark was sarcastic. But she knew she could make it serious enough for it to be just a mere joke.

"At least I know I have a chance."
