Sydney's POV

For as long as I have been in school Dad has always told me that school is important, especially your last two years of high school and before college. Which of course I'm going to Yale. To be like Dad. I've been talking about going to Yale since I was little. So far, life as a teenager is going good so far. That's until I'm paired with Amelia Wilson. The sister of Annie. Aka my best friend.

Me and Amelia are two polar opposites of personalities. I like following the rules to some degree and Amelia. Well she just doesn't care. I was slowly losing my spot as the smartest person in class to Amelia who is high in nerdiness. Like her father Spencer. Which means competition.

I was in the library with Amelia the girl who I had been disliking for as long as I could remember. It's a pain always seeing Amelia but at least there's Annie to back me up. So that's the another bonus. Okay, the only bonus.

Just like per usual Amelia is making me do all of the work because she just doesn't want to do the essay. I roll my eyes as I'm doing the research part of it, even if I know it. I just don't wanna make it too obvious that I'm smart.

"Getting a head start on the essay?" Amelia asks taking a seat next to me, making me bite my cheek from keeping me out of trouble.

"Never hurts to finish early." I mumble hoping that she would take the hint and leave me alone.

I look over my shoulder and see that of course she didn't leave as she leaned over my shoulder to look at the computer screen. "Hmm?" She says raising her eyebrows up in confusion. I know what Amelia is trying to do, as I am the daughter of a profiler after all. She was trying to sike me out.

"What?" I ask quickly getting annoyed with Amelia.

Amelia shook her head as I tried to keep my composure. "Oh nothing. I just didn't interrupt the essay the way you are."

"At least I'm doing mine. Unlike you." I say as I went back to the research of the essay.

"I guess we'll see who's right in a week."

"Can you just leave me alone." I snapped. "Go work on your own paper elsewhere."

She shrugged and stood up. As she pushed in her chair and walked away I felt something bump into me making me drop the papers that was in my hand and onto the floor. Sick and tired of her, I sprung from my chair and threw a punch at her. She turned around and threw it back.

In a short few minutes the librarian came and separated the two of us. She walked us to the office. I was sent to the nurses office while Amelia was sent to the principal to give her side of the story. Which was most likely likes and making me the bad person. Knowing Amelia that's exactly what she did.

When I turned around to see the disappointed look on Dad's face, I was shocked when I saw Derek. That means that Dad is on a case, or something. I knew that I would get into trouble either way, whether it was Dad or whoever picked me up from school. I grabbed my stuff and said bye to Annie. I'm guessing Derek already signed me out and he started walking out of the building.

I followed closely behind and tried to get him to stop. "I'm sorry." I say to him as we got to the truck. I got in and Derek put my stuff in the back.

"It's fine, it's not me who you need to say that to."

"Is he mad?"

"He doesn't know."

"Oh."

"So, what happened, Syd? You're not the kind to get into trouble."

"I know, it's just I told her to leave me alone and she bumped into me making me drop what I was holding and I didn't mean to clock her. That was my first instinct that I thought of." I tell him as he nods his head as he starts driving and leaving the school. I saw Annie so I rolled down my window, I motioned Derek to stop which he did.

Annie gave me a sad look as she hugged me. "I'm sorry about her, she's stupid."

"Ain't that the truth." I tell her as we break the hug as she gives me a sad look as I see one of Annie's friends, Brooklyn Wendel, she's really nice in a way.

"I'm sorry about what happened. Don't let Amelia get to your head, okay?" Brooklyn says to me as I nod my head.

Annie looked up and I'm guessing that she saw Derek. "Hey." She says him. "Hey." He says back to her. "Need a ride, Annie?" Derek asked her as she nods her head. "Is that okay?" She asks as he nods his head. "Of course." He says as she says bye to Brooklyn who waves to me as I wave her back before me and Annie get into the truck.

Annie and Derek were talking about whatever as I was looking out the window, wanting to tune out everything and or anything really. I didn't even move my gaze from counting the trees that we've passed, which is exactly 349 trees. Shit, that's a lot of trees.

"For the time being you're gonna camp out with me." I heard Derek tell me as I wasn't paying attention. It wasn't until I felt his hand on my shoulder which got my attention. I slowly turned my head to face him. "That and because they're on a case."

I didn't say anything outside of imagining Dad when he finds out what happened. All I know is that he isn't gonna be happy, like when he wasn't happy when he found out that JJ and Emily kept a secret from him, that Emily was alive. That and how he mourned Emily's death for ten weeks.

"Will he be mad?" I ask him as my voice was shaky as just imagining Dad when he finds out, terrifies me. Not once has he been mad at me. But I've seen him plenty mad, 99.9 percent of the time it's at mom, but still.

"Probably, but I'm not promising anything, kiddo." He says to me which didn't help in the slightest, just made me more scared.

"Thanks." I grumbled as I looked back out the window, before we got to a house which looked amazing on the outside but the inside, it needed to be renovated.

After what felt like hours of us being here, but was an easy two hours, Derek's phone ranged. I was too busy drilling holes to really care who it was, I looked up and he was looking at me and then said something into the phone and then. He then went back to drilling holes in the other side me.

All I knew was that we were making a counter but fancy, like Rossi's counter but better. That's all I caught on to it. I glanced at him but he hadn't noticed. I sighed hoping that it wasn't Dad on the other end of the call. Not even twenty minutes later, I took off my headphones, so that I don't blow an eardrum drilling holes. I got up and heard talking outside and I was confused as Derek didn't tell me that he was expecting anyone today. I walked out and my mouth gaped open. It was my Dad.

Shit.

I walked back into the house making it seem like I was still working. I was mixing the colors as I was done sanding the counter I was assigned to do, and from the corner of my eye Dad was walking towards me.

He got in front of me, well the counter and stopped. My eyes gazed up at his matching brown ones. "Syd, we need to talk?" He tells me and the Derek was walking back into the house.

"I'll stop until you get back, okay."

"Okay." I say as I walked to the other side of the counter and then me and Dad walked to the back of the house, we sat on the concrete step. My hands were shaking tremendously, and not in a good way. Is this normal?

I avoided looking at Dad because I don't want to see the disappointment. I could tell that he was angry, but he wouldn't do that to me. He looked calm to the average person, but when your Dad is a profiler it's like you see a different version of that person. It maybe the same person, but you see a different version of that person.

(I know I repeated myself, duck it okay!)

"What happened today?" He asked me as I kicked myself as he was gonna ask that question. Why do parents ask that question? Why?! It's fucking torture.

I knew I wouldn't lie to him. I do that enough when he asks me if I had eaten. That's bad enough. I lie about my scars on my body. I lie about everything basically, at least that's what it feels to me.

After I didn't answer he put his hand on my shoulder making me flinch slightly. Ugh. I hate being a scaredy cat, it's annoying honestly. But what can I say.

"A thing happened." I say to him as I sighed. "It wasn't my fault." I say as I stand up. "Completely." I say correcting my words, knowing that would be the first thing that Dad would say. He got up too, I couldn't bare myself to look at him. I just couldn't. I seriously need to work on my eye contact.

"Okay, let's play a game, okay. Syd. You love games, right?" Derek says sounding a little too eager but I just wanted to go along with it.

"Totally." I grumbled under my breath as I felt Dad thumping my head as we sat on this bench that was uneven to say the least Derek had to put some extra weight on it, so that me and Dad don't start flying everywhere.

That would be fun, and also avoiding this topic. Which I totally want to do. But atlas sadly, I can't.

"Close your eyes, and tell your Dad everything that happened." He says to me as I stuck out my tongue at him making him smile as I tolled my eyes before I closed them. "Keep those peekers closed."

"I was being paired with Amelia, Annie's sister. I told her to leave me alone because she was getting up in my personal bubble and not in a good way like someone is hugging you, but like yeah. She got up to go someplace bumped into me making me drop what I was holding and the next thing I know is that I clocked her in the face. That was my first instinct that I thought of." I say all in one huge breath as Derek is looking at me like I'm speaking in a different language.

I took a deep breath as I tried to relax myself as I had tears in my eyes. "You can open your eyes." I hear Dad say as I felt my breathing hitch as I prepare my fate. "Morgan, give a couple minutes."

"Sure thing." He says as he got up and walked away as I glare at him for leaving. When Derek was gone and out of sight. I looked at Dad just as he looked at me. "I'm disappointed in you, Sydney May. I am." He tells me as I can hear the hurt and disappointment in his voice as I look down, but then look back up.

"I-I-I'm s-s-sorry." I stumble over my words as I can feel his eyes glued on me but in a profiler/interrogation way. I'm used to it. Is it bad that I can feel the disappointment in his eyes.

"You're grounded." He says to me as I nod my head accepting my fate for the next two weeks. Or something. We both don't know how this whole 'grounding' thing works, because it's never happened to me. But he's learning. "I read a parenting book earlier."

"Doesn't surprise me." I say as I bit my cheek as I saw Derek's head poking out from the door. I think he misses me.

"Is this the right shade?"

"That's your question. You scared the shit out of me."

"Chicken." I tell him as I had a grin on my face.

"I am not a chicken."

"Okay, um scaredy chicken."

"That's not a thing."

"Too me it is."
