Chapter 4: School isn't fun.
Cassandra was pacing back and forth with her hand on her chin while Y/n was staring at her anxiously. Ever since she found out about what happened in the park, she's been quiet. Usually, she just does this when she's planning or when she's strategizing. It's worked when you two were in tough situations in the past, so Y/n bit her lip and waited for her response.
"...Were you able to get a good look at him? Did you notice anything distinct about the way he acts?" Cassandra stopped pacing and sat across from you at the kitchen table. She pulls out a notepad and pen and stares at Y/n intently. "Well, I noticed he had blond hair, blue eyes and has a soft spot for that little girl I told you about." Cassandra scribbles this into the notepad. "And you said he looked around our age?" "Yeah." Cassandra scribbled something else into her notepad.
"Hypothetically speaking, If he was around our age, then you might be able to identify him tomorrow when we start at that high school." Y/n sighed. "Cassandra, let's be realistic. There are going to be hundreds of kids there, and a lot of them will have blond hair and blue eyes. Also, why is it so important that we know who he is?" "Y/n, when faced with an obstacle, you've got to learn everything you can about it so its easier to face. I also don't want you to get hurt by this guy." Cassandra looks at you with tired eyes, and Y/n felt a twinge of guilt. Doing the background check was HER job, and it seems she messed it up.
"I'm sorry sis. I shouldn't have moved us to a town with VIGILANTES. Now we're out of cash and we're stuck HERE." She said the last word like its a bad taste on her tongue. Cassandra laughs. "We'll be fine, N/n. We always are, aren't we?" She smiled. Y/n smiled back at the mention of her nickname. She hadn't been called that in a while.
"Yeah, this is going to be fine." Cassandra yawns. "Glad you think so. Tomorrow, I'll see what I can find out about our new underwear-clad friend. Right now I'm tired so I'm turning in for the night." She gives Y/n a small hug and walks to her room. "Night N/n~." "Goodnight."
After she heard Cassandra's door slam shut, Y/n pushed herself off the table and let out a heavy sigh. She walked over to the window and stared out at the dozens of different colored houses opposite to hers. "God, I hope this doesn't go to shit."
*~*~*~*~*
Y/n's eyes blink open tiredly. She looked around and noticed she was in a place she didn't recognize. She sat up, alarmed, but remembered that this was her new room because she moved to a new house.
In a new town.
With VIGILANTES.
She let out a noise that sounds like a dying animal upon remembering yesterdays encounter with the mysterious boy. She looked over at the alarm she set. It was supposed to go off at 7:00, but the clock read 6:43. She shrugged and shut it off. She threw her sheets off her legs and stepped out of bed. She opened up her closet, grabbed her s/f/c shirt and f/c jacket and some black pants. She also decided to wear her old s/f/c hat, just because she was fond of it.
She stepped into the hallway and noticed Cassandra scrolling through her phone. She was wearing her signature blue raincoat with her black leggings, and it looks like she actually brushed her short hair for once, as it somewhat curled neatly at the ends. "Looking to impress someone?" Y/n teased. She rolls her eyes, not looking up from her phone. "Well unlike you, I like to make myself presentable." Cassandra stuffs her phone into her pocket. "Anyway, I made breakfast. Want a bagel?"
After the two girls ate their bagels, they walked out to see that their car was gone. "Wait, where's that car we came here in?" Y/n scrunched her face in confusion."We high jacked that one, remember? I sold it to some shady looking dude after you left." Cassandra states plainly as they made their way down the street. "We're going to have to ride the local bus to school." Y/n sighed in annoyance. "Buses are so lame." "Yeah, I know." Up ahead, Y/n could see an empty-looking bus stop where they would presumably be taking the bus. Y/n and Cassandra stood to the right of the bus stop and waited silently for it to arrive.
Upon looking to her left, Y/n notice four boys walking towards the bus stop. One was wearing a red poofball hat with a brown jacket, and next to him a boy wearing a green ushanka hat with an orange jacket was arguing with some fat guy in a red coat. The boy on the end of the line was wearing an orange parka, but his hood was up so Y/n couldn't see anything below his nose. He seemed generally uninterested in whatever was being debated about, but his interest seemed to perk when his gaze settled on Y/n.
The group of boys stopped at the opposite side of the bus stop and continued their argument without acknowledging the girls standing a few feet away from them.
The parka boy was still watching Y/n keenly, though. She noticed him staring at her, and offered a small wave and smile in his direction. He smiled, (she thought) and waved back. The group of boys finally take notice of Y/n after seeing their friend wave at her. They almost instantly shut up, with the exception of the fat one muttering something about 'jews.' An awkward silence fills the air. Everything is quiet for a moment. Finally, the boy with the green hat spoke up.
"Uh. We don't usually see other people at this bus stop. Are you two new?" He asks. "Yeah." Y/n responds, scratching the back of her head. "We just moved here yesterday. I'm Y/n, and this is Cassandra." She said while pointing to herself and your sister. Cassandra gives a half-wave. "Oh. Well, I'm Kyle. That's Stan, Kenny, and Cartman." Kyle says, motioning to himself and his friends. "Cool, nice to meet you guys then." Cassandra gives a polite nod at the group before the bus finally shows up.
Y/n and Cassandra decide to sit near the back and keep to themselves, despite all the other kids on the bus surprised to see new faces. Y/n just sighed and hoped the bus ride wasn't going to be too long.
*~*~*~*~*
After arriving at the school and getting their daily schedules, Y/n was saddened to see that she and Cassandra weren't in the same homeroom. "It's fine, I'll see you at lunch." Cassandra shrugs it off, and to Y/n's disdain, leaves her to aimlessly look for room 102 amidst a sea of angsty teenagers.
Just as she's about to give up her goose chase and ask for directions, Y/n felt a light tap on her shoulder. She turned her head to see that boy from the bus...Kenny, she thought his name was, smirking at her. "Lost?" He asked in a playful tone. "Sadly, yes." She huffed. "Your names Kenny, right?" He nodded. "And you're Y/n?" She also nods. "I am. Anyways, do you happen to know where I could find room 102? Apparently, it's my homeroom." His grin widened.
"Well luckily for you, that's where I'm heading. You can tag along if you want. It's not too far from here, actually." Y/n breathes a sigh of relief. "Thanks, being late for my first day sounded like a nightmare. So where exactly is it?" He laughs a bit. "You're standing right beside it, sweetheart."
He points into the doorway Y/n is standing beside, and surely enough, the numbers '102' are labeled above on a small rusty plaque. She puts her hand on her forehead and shakes her head slowly. "Oh god, I'm way too tired for this." Kenny smiles and pats her on the shoulder. "See you in there, Y/n." He walks into the room. Y/n takes a shaky breath and follows.
As she enters the classroom, Y/n notices many kids her age gossiping and slumping into their desks unenthusiastically. She couldn't blame them, especially considering it was a Monday. When the teacher notices her, he hastily motions for Y/n to approach his desk. She walks next to where he is seated while he yells for the class to quiet down. Once everyone is silent, he clears his throat. "Alright class, we have a new student joining us today." He lazily flicks his wrist at Y/n. "Go ahead. Introduce yourself."
She straightens her back and looks out at her new classmates, who are staring at her boredly. "Um, Hi. My names Y/n L/n. I'm from H/t, and I like f/s/m, f/v/g, and-" She was abruptly cut off by the teacher. "I didn't ask for your life story, God. Just go sit over there, next to Kenny. Kenny, raise your hand." Kenny, whom Y/n is only now noticing is in the last row, raises his hand up. Y/n heaves her bag onto her shoulder and briskly walk over to him, becoming agitated by the amounts of sneers and snickers she heard from the other students. The teacher yells for them to shut up and begins yapping about how fake Kim Kardashian's ass is. Y/n angrily slumps into the desk, while Kenny watches her with an amused expression on his face.
"Not the first impression you were hoping for?" She snapped her head towards him and gave him a cold glare. "Aw, c'mon Y/n, That's no way to look at your new friend." Y/n's face was still expressionless, but she was quite surprised by him saying that. "Did he just call me his friend..?" She thought to herself. At your old schools, Y/n and Cassandra were often referred to as 'those weird loner girls.' She never really HAD a friend. Y/n softens her cold gaze for a moment. "Wait, I've only just met you today." Her gaze hardens again. "Why would you want to be friends with me?"
Kenny raises his hands in surrender. "Alright, alright. I'll tell you. Yesterday, you helped my sister get her doll back from those asshole sixth graders. I figured being nice would be a good way to repay you." He shrugged his shoulders, and Y/n's eyes widen in surprise. "Wait, YOU'RE Karen's brother?" She scratched her chin in confusion. "You two don't look alike." He scoffs. "Yeah, we get that a lot. Nevertheless, she's still my sister." Y/n stares at him curiously and bites the bottom of her lip.
"So then you know about her, uh... guardian angel, as she calls him?" Y/n was curious to see how Kenny would react to the mention of the vigilante. All he did was sigh and wave his hand dismissively. "Yeah, I know all about that. Everyone in this town knows who he is." Y/n squints at him thoughtfully. "And some dude in spandex running around stalking your sister doesn't worry you at all?" He furrows his eyebrows and opens his mouth to respond, but he is cut off by the shrill ring of an alarm. Y/n flinches in surprise at the sudden loudness. At the front of the class, she sees the teacher sigh. "Looks like we're going to have to cut our lesson short today. That's the fire alarm. Everyone head outside to the schoolyard." The students grumble and gather their things, slowly filing out of the class and into the hallway. Kenny stands up and joins the group, giving a glance in Y/n's direction before heading out the door. She followed him outside and through the hallway, unsure of where the schoolyard was.
Just as she's about to turn around a corner, Y/n felt a tug on the back of her jacket. She turned around and was faced with a closed door. The plaque above it reads: 'Computer Lab.' The door suddenly opens, and none other than Cassandra peeks her head out motions for Y/n to come inside. Y/n swept her gaze over the now empty hallway and slipped into the room.
The computer lab was completely empty and the lights were off, making it appear dark and eerie. All the computers were off as well, except for the one in the corner of the room that Cassandra was sitting at. Y/n cautiously stepped to where she was seated. The blue light from the screen illuminated her face, and you notice that her eyes were wide with shock. "Cassandra, is something wrong..?" She turns her head towards her and points at the screen. "Y/n. This guy that you met yesterday is more than just a vigilante." Y/n's face scrunches in confusion. What did she mean? "Look for yourself." Cassandra motioned to the screen as Y/n steps up to it. On the screen, she sees an image of an old newspaper clipping from a few years ago. The title, printed in large, now faded letters read "MYSTERIOUS NEW HERO TURNS THE TABLES ON CRIME!"
Below, there is a picture of a young boy in a homemade superhero costume posing a little bit too dramatically. Surely enough, this boy looked exactly like the vigilante from the park, only younger. Y/n was at a loss for words. "He's been doing this for a long time..." She went pale. Cassandra gave Y/n a hopeless look. "We're up against a professional. What do we do now?"
Y/n inhaled. She felt the dread building inside of her stomach, but she wasn't about to give up because of her potential opponent. She turned towards her sister and gave her a grim smile. "Don't worry about this guy, Cassandra. He might've been doing this for a while, but we've been doing it LONGER. And I swear, I won't let some ASSWIPE in a cape ruin EVERYTHING WE'VE WORKED FOR-" Y/n was abruptly cut off by the sound of the doorknob jiggling. She swiftly moved to delete the open tab on the computer while Cassandra was stuffing one of her USBs into her coat pocket. The door swung open, and a patrol of hall monitors entered the computer lab. "HEY!" One yelled. The two girls casually spun around to face the gingers.
"Oh hello there, we are just your average students who are doing absolutely nothing wrong at this time," Cassandra said, awkwardly leaning against a tall potted plant. The hall monitors looked confused. Y/n internally cringed. "Uh," A short ginger stepped forward, cleared his throat, "All students are to report to the schoolyard at the sound of the fire alarm. Please move along." Y/n gave an apologetic grin. "Sorry, my sister here was just... printing something for her science class. We'll be leaving now." She grabbed Cassandra's hand and strode towards the door. The gingers formed a line in front of the girls, making them stop.
"Uh uh uh, not so fast," The short ginger chided. "You two broke the rules. That means..." He gave a suddenly malicious grin. "Detention."
