the angel maker
[season four; episode two]
Third Person's POV
Evelina Rossi grabbed her stuff as she left her apartment, that she would need for the day, then she got into her car and headed to the BAU for her first day. For the past two-three weeks, she did the paperwork that she would need to do to be qualified, like the gun qualification and all that jazz. Which was fairly easy for her, as she did better than she thought of during her gun qualification. Narrowly missed the target but she did it.
When she got out of the elevator as she smiled when she heard her father's voice. Yes, her father. Her father is David Rossi. Hotch turned around, along with Rossi. He smiled at the sight of his daughter.
"Evelina, nice to see you." Evelina immediately recognized who the voice was as it was Aaron Hotchner. Evelina remembers Hotch as he has a soft side for the girl, but he wouldn't admit that. Hotch says giving her a small smile, as she smiled back.
"Rossi, who is this?" A man asked as his hair was a little long, as Evelina looked away as she was staring at the guy. Beside him was a dark skinned man, who gave Evelina a small smile.
"Evelina, this is Dr. Reid. Whatever you do, do not say Agent Reid, he hates it." Rossi said as Evelina tried not to laugh at hearing that.
"Nice to meet you, Dr. Reid." Evelina says as Spencer gave her a small nod, with a smile that nearly made Evelina do a happy dance.
"I'm Derek, see you met Dave, and Hotch. Nice to meet you." Derek says giving Evelina a handshake as she curtly nods back.
"Yeah, I know Dave really well actually. He's my father." Evelina says as Spencer and Derek turned their heads and stared at her with wide eyes.
"What's going on? Who's this lovely lady?" A blonde woman asked as she walked behind Derek.
"This is Evelina....Rossi. Apparently Dave had a daughter." Derek says, as Penelope has the biggest smile on her face, which nearly made Evelina chuckle.
"Oh my Gosh, I'm Penelope Garcia. We're gonna be best friends." Penelope says, as she opened her arms and Evelina hugged the woman.
"Nice to meet you all...for those I hadn't already known..." Evelina says, which earned a couple chuckles and laughs.

Evelina sits in between Spencer and Rossi as JJ presents the case.
"This is Delilah Grennan. She was bludgeoned and raped during the night at her home in Lower Canaan, Ohio." JJ says.
"Lower where?" Emily Prentiss asked.
"Small town 40 miles outside of Cincinnati." Evelina says.
"Staging the body face up with the arms across the chest like that." Spencer says.
"It's a ritual, nice hair by the way." Derek says as he messes with Spencer's hair.
"Thanks." Spencer says as he fixes his hair.
"There's more. Small puncture wounds on her stomach. Note the lack of blood." JJ says.
"They were inflicted postmortem. Where there any other victims?" Evelina asked.
"Kind of." JJ says making Evelina look at her weirdly.
"Kind of, what does that mean?" Evelina asked.
"Victimology and signature match a serial killer from the same town ten years ago. Six victims spanning over 10 months. He called him---" JJ say.
"The Angel Maker. I remember that case." Hotch says.
"But they caught that guy." Spencer says.
"And executed him." Rossi says.
"That's right. He was put to death by lethal injection a year ago yesterday." JJ says.
"Yesterday." Emily says.
"So, we're looking for a copycat." Derek says.
"Honoring the anniversary of his hero's death." Hotch says.
"It says here they found semen at the crime scene. Perhaps locals will get a DNA match when they run it through ViCAP." Spencer says.
"Well, that's where it gets weird. They ran it already, and they got a match too." JJ says.
"Hold on. If they already have a name, why'd they call us?" Evelina asked.
"You've got to be kidding me. The match they got back on the DNA is the Cortland Bryce Ryan, otherwise known as the Angel Maker." Rossi says as Evelina shakes her head at what her dad said.
BAU Jet
"The Angel Maker's victims were beaten with the assailant's bare hands. Delilah Grennan was bludgeoned with a heavy instrument, maybe a hammer." Spencer says, as Evelina nods her head.
"Okay, so this Unsub's a weaker guy or at least someone who perceived himself that way." Hotch says.
"So, he brought along the hammer to make certain his victim wouldn't fight back." Emily says.
"They have parachutes on board, right?" Rossi asked.
"They should. It's standard on all federal air transport." Derek says.
"Maybe we can give one to the elephant in the room, get him out of here." Rossi says.
"That would be the elephant with the dead man's DNA?" Derek says.
"Well, obviously somebody planted the semen on the victim." Hotch says as Evelina gags a little at hearing that.
'TMI, didn't need to know that information' Evelina thought in her head.
"In the victim." Derek says.
"That's the theory." Evelina and Spencer say in unison.
"There's another?" JJ asked as Evelina nods her head.
"Think about it, who shares the exact DNA makeup of another person." Evelina starts as Derek looks at the girl confused.
"Evelina and Spencer, you're not seriously floating around the idea of an evil twin, are you?" Derek asked.
"No, we're not. We're floating the idea of an eviler twin." Spencer says as him and Evelina fist-bumped for their genius minds of figuring that out.
"Traditionally, the concept is a good twin and an evil twin, but in this case, it's evil twin, eviler twin." Evelina says as the team goes silent.
Lower Canaan, Ohio
Once the team gets to Ohio, Evelina goes with Spencer and Hotch to the crime scene.
"Before Cortland Ryan, this town hadn't seen a homicide in over 30 years. He didn't just kill those six women. He killed a way of life, now this thing's got people thinking he's come back." Dobson says.
"They don't really think that, do they?" Evelina asked.
"I guess when you've been scared by something, I mean really scared, that fear is in you forever." Dobson says as Evelina and Spencer share a look.
"Let's stick to the facts. Were there signs of forced entry?" Hotch asked.
"None that we could find. But whoever killed Delilah Grennan opened up every window in this house before he left." Dobson says.
"That was a signature from the previous murders." Evelina points out.
"A detail we never released to the public." Dobson says.
"Then it came out at the trial?" Hotch asked.
"No, sir. Prosecution had Ryan nailed nine ways to Sunday, didn't need it. So, I'm hard-pressed to know how this copycat knew about those windows." Dobson says.
"The man we're looking for is most likely a fan who exhaustively studied the first killings and used them to form his own murder fantasies." Hotch says.
"He knows this case as well, as us, and better maybe, if he had actual contact with Ryan while he was incarcerated." Evelina says.
"We sent one of our agents to Hawkesville Prison to look into it." Hotch says.
"And the semen?" Dobson asked.
"Smuggled out of the prison, kept on ice. Brought out on the anniversary of the execution." Hotch says.
"There's an entire cottage industry based on serial-killer effects, and memorabilia. You can find absolutely anything, if you know the right people." Spencer says.
"The question is, is this a one-time commemoration or is it just the beginning?" Hotch asked.
They got a call from JJ that there had been a letter addressed from the Angel Maker, so they all go back to the station to read the letter.
Evelina reads off the letter that was sent. "I give you a legacy. A breath of life from the Angel Maker himself. Those who prayed to forget me will one day see my face and shrink in fear." Evelina reads
"This is the last thing people need right now." Dobson says.
"Evelina, how's it compare with the original correspondence?" Derek asked the woman.
"They share some compelling characteristics. I'd obviously like to look at it under magnification with a better light." Evelina says.
"Best guess, Evelina." Hotch says.
"I'd say it's authentic." Spencer says looking at the letter.
"How can this letter be authentic if they guy's been dead for a year?" Dobson asked.
"It could be an elaborate forgery." Hotch says.
"Or it could be the genuine article, just written before his death." Derek says.
"Well, mail here isn't that slow." Dobson says.
"And released through an intermediary." Spencer says.
"You mean the copycat. We're going over the prison visitor logs to check who had multiple visits with Ryan. Try to narrow a suspect pool." Derek says as a woman walks into the station and asks for the letter.
They see a crowd of people outside of the prison who believed that Cortland Ryan was alive. To prove that Cortland Ryan was dead, Hotch, Emily and Rossi went to the graveyard to dig up Cortland Ryan's grave.

It's the next day and Hotch told the team that when they dug up Cortland Ryan's grave it was empty. They were told that there might have been some complications with the execution, so they bring it to the doctor that was at the execution.
"Cortland Ryan is dead. There's no two ways about it." Dr. Hagan says.
"We're just trying to be thorough, Dr. Hagen. We heard that there may have been irregularities with the execution." Derek says.
"His heart was stopped. His pupils were non-responsive. I mean, trust me, this is not the first execution I pronounced at." Dr. Hagan says.
"But it was the last." Rossi comments.
"Did something happen that day to prompt your resignation for the Corrections Department?" Evelina asked.
"Everyone dies different. Ryan went hard is all." Dr. Hagen says as Evelina and Derek have the same confused look on their faces.
"What does that mean, doctor?" Derek asked.
"After we cycled the drugs, we realized he was still alive. We weren't prepared for that." Dr. Hagen says.
"How is that possible?" Rossi asked.
"Did the catheter dislodge?" Evelina asked as the doctor looked at the woman.
"Y-Yes, how'd you know that?" Dr. Hagen asked.
"I know things, I read a lot. I assume you re-inserted it and started potassium chloride?" Evelina says.
"Yes. Then, he started shaking, spitting." Dr. Hagen says.
"He was suffocating." Evelina says, as the doctor nods his head.
"The catheter failed again. It took him almost an hour to die, almost as if something were keeping him here. He said this was going to happen, you know." The doctor says as Evelina raised an eyebrow.
"That, what was going to happen?" Derek asked.
"His last words. He said he'd come back." Dr. Hagen says, as Evelina wasn't expecting that plot twist.

There had been another murder, Sid Rutledge. After Emily and Derek got back from the house, the team started briefing the station.
"There have been some strange happenings in this case, but I urge you not to abandon reason in the search of the truth. This is not the wok of a ghost, and it's not the work of a killer come back from the dead. This is the work of somebody who lives right here in Lower Canaan, and this person is a female." Hotch starts.
"Her last victim, Sid Rutledge, he was the Angel Maker's mule. He smuggled items out of Hawkesville Prison, including the semen that was planed at the first crime scene." Derek says as Evelina scrunched her nose a little.
"She killed Rutledge because he knew she was the copycat and also because he was blackmailing her." Spencer says.
'Not wrong, Spence.' Evelina thought in her head.
"We now know that Rutledge was transferred to Hawkesville from a female prison in the wake of allegations that he was using his position to leverage sexual favors from inmates." Evelina says.
"And we think he did the same thing to our Unsub, or Unknown Subject. In exchange for his silence, he wanted sex." Hotch says.
"Because she shot him in the junk, right?" An officer says.
"That, and the fact that he took a PDE-inhibitor shortly before his murder." Spencer says.
"A what?" Dobson says.
"Viagra." Derek says.
"We're looking for a white woman, in her mid-30s, and she's highly intelligent. And she's not just a fan, she's a groupie." Hotch says.
"Now, she's not what you would normally expect." Derek says.
"More often than not, they're attractive, well-educated, successful. Some are even married." Evelina says.
"Generally, they fall into types. Some are 'reformers'. They're on a mission to save or rescue these murderers. Often, this type of groupie's been raised in a repressive, religious environment and, specifically, have been exposed to the ideals of sexual repression and subjugation of women." Spencer says.
"Our Unsub is a different type, one who suffers from hybristophilia. It's a sexual attraction to men who commit violent crimes. They give her a power that she lacks, which stems from low self-esteem and a need for a father figure." Derek explains.
"Well the victims were raped. How do you explain that?" An officer asked.
"She's using an instrument to simulate the sexual assault. This is something she keeps in her rape kit, along with the weapon that she's using the bludgeon her victims." Evelina says.
"This is the list of women who visited and wrote the Angel Maker, while he was in prison. We've started to track these leads, but the list is extensive, so we're gonna need your help." JJ explains as they all split up and talk to women who visited the Angel Maker.

There had been another murder and Evelina is at the station with Spencer as they are reading over letters addressed to someone who the Angel Maker named 'Dove'.
"Here's another one to Dove." Spencer says. "November 2, 2006." He adds.
"Same thing?" Rossi asked.
"Yeah. 'Weather is good here. Out in the garden all day. Birds land on the fence. The moon is full now." Evelina says.
"He got an hour a day in a concrete yard. There was no garden. There were no birds. Death row haiku. I mean, you have to try to write this bad." Rossi says.
"I think he did. He tried very hard to put each word, each letter, in the right order." Evelina says.
"So, it's a code?" Rossi asked.
"A steganographic method that would allow him to write letters that don't appear enciphered. The real message would be hiding in plain sight." Evelina says.
"What do you need to crack it?" Rossi asked his daughter.
"The ability to clone myself and a year's supply of Adderall?" Spencer says, as if he read Evelina's mind.
"I'll put in the coffee." Rossi says, making Evelina smile.
"Make it decaf." Evelina says.
"Already, planned on it." Rossi says as he walks away to make the coffee.

The team came back to the station and Emily figured out the reason behind the puncture wounds. Their Unsub was copying the constellations. Spencer and Evelina had figured out what the Unsub meant to Cortland Ryan.
"They weren't just close...." Spencer says.
"They were in love." Spencer and Evelina say in unison.
"How do you two crack it?" Rossi asked Spencer and his daughter.
"We profiled the author. Cortland Ryan was on death row for several high-ranking members of the Aryan Brotherhood." Evelina says as Spencer nods his head.
"He got the code from the Aryans?" JJ asked.
"Either that or he read a lot of 16-century literature." Evelina says.
"The Aryans like to use a cipher based on a 400 year old code written by Sir Francis Bacon." Spencer says.
"So, it's a binary code." Derek says as Evelina nods his head.
"Yeah, Bacon used a 21 letter alphabet. This one's 24. Each letter is assigned a---" Evelina says.
"Bit string of five binary digits." Spencer and Evelina say in unison.
"This combination yields 32 possible encodings. Normally, you'd use a computer to run all these combinations..." Evelina says before Spencer adds to what she said.
"But it was quicker just to do it longhand until we find the right one." Spencer says.
Emily poked Spencer's cheek, as Evelina smiles a little. "He's so lifelike."
"We don't have a complete record of their correspondence but we were able to make their chronology." Evelina says.
"The woman he calls, 'dove'." Spencer says.
"'My dearest Cortland. Thank you for writing back to me. The day the verdict was read, we shared a silent moment. I knew even there was a force willing us together. Every time, I see you, I feel warmers as if by the sun, and yet I fear if I come too close, I'll be consumed by your fire." Spencer explains as they continue to read the letters.
"What do you think she meant by that last line? 'I will bring a part of you back'." Emily says.
"What if she was talking about his child???" JJ asked.
"Well she does say, 'us'. 'Watch over us from the stars." Spencer says.
"She used the semen samples to plant evidence, not to get pregnant." Rossi says.
"Well, what if she did both?" Hotch asked.
"Well, if she actually had his kid, we might be able to track her through birth records." Emily says as they had been another attack, so Emily goes with Hotch to the scene.

Evelina is at the station with Hotch, Rossi, Derek and Spencer looking over names until Dobson finds a name, Chloe Kelcher. Evelina manages to convince Hotch to let her go with them to search the house. They find it empty, but they did find a baby in the room with a chest that contained Cortland Ryan's body. Then they find out who Chloe's next victim is, they bolt straight to the house. They end up finding the victim and they untie her and sneak her out of the house. Dobson ends up killing Chloe and they find out that she was the last victim.

the case is finally over and they're ready to head home. "Anyone get directions back to the airstrip?" JJ asked.
"The town's only got one road. We'll find it." Derek says as Evelina smiles as she's leaning on the car beside Derek.
"Yeah, Derek doesn't like to follow directions." Evelina jokes as Derek gives her a look.
"You didn't know about that?" Emily asked.
"Yeah, he likes to 'vibe it'." Spencer says.
"Okay, smart ass you drive." Derek says as he tosses the keys to Spencer.

back at quantico
The team got back to Quantico, as they're packing their stuff as they're heading out for the day. Evelina was at her new desk packing up her stuff and putting it into her bag. "So what have you been up too all these years?" Was a voice as it was her father, David Rossi.
She turned to face him, before he saw a picture of her and a little girl. "When did you?"
Evelina looks down at the picture, and then back at him. "I didn't. I um adopted her when she was three. She's the light of my life. " Evelina says.
"What's her story?" Dave asked, her.
"She came from a terrible background, so much like some of the cases of child neglect and abuse I have seen, heard, and sadly dealt with." Evelina says as Dave shakes his head at hearing that.
"How old is she now?" He asked her.
"Five, going to be six in a couple weeks. I fought my life just to adopt her, because everyone said I couldn't do it." Evelina says with a proud smile on her face.
"She's going to have a great mother." He says with a smile on his face.
"Thank you, she's my little angel/demon/tornado." Evelina comments as he chuckles.
"I'm proud of you."
